+Manutdbl2015 Just glad he didn't type "retarded" ha ha.
+Manutdbl2015 side note, not sidetone haha
really enjoyed kyle on the council today. i hope he returns soon
Me too
Don't you mean... 'Kyle-O'
BWAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHA!
(I'm so sorry)
+bachkwt If you wanna hear him talk Star Wars listen to the RebelForce Radio podcast. He often guests on that.
+bachkwt Me too. I have quite the crush on him now! ;-)
+Darth Robin RFR fan here!!
This is interesting, watching Jedi Council as a fan! -KH
Heh
Did you take the wrap for Marks dues to Kanjuklub?
Please make Kyle a permanent member of the show, he is very insightful!
I Love You Dude!! HAPPY NEW YEAR!!!
+schmoesknow Lets speculate as fans LOL
What if Kylo is on a secret mission from luke, who told him no matter what you must Destroy Snoke. NOTE: When kylo sits infront of vader's helmet he tells him. "i felt it again, the calling from the light. Show me again the power of the Darkside. I will foefill what you started." So the Light Keeps Calling to him saying (what are you doing your good) and he reminds vader to show him the power of the darkside so he doesn't forget the EVIL. AND Finish what he started. WHich is starting to turn on the darkside by beginning to kill the emperor.
SO is Kylo a Double Agent??
I suspect Kyle Newman doesn't absolutely despise the Prequels, burn him!!!
Seriously though it was refreshing to see a guest on the council that didn't take every opportunity to bore us with how much they hate every single aspect of the prequels.
He really knows his stuff and i hope to see him on again in the future. Great episode.
Completely agree, and I like the prequels
+Stevo C I totally agree. I think he's the best guest Jedi Council has had since I started watching. I hope he's on again.
+Stevo C That thing though he said about someone who doesn't like the prequels, special-ed. or episode 7 is not a fan of Star Wars was stupid.
+Dan Hilmart Well i don't necessarily agree with him on that one. People can like what they want and still consider themselves a fan of parts of Star Wars as far as i'm concerned.
+Stevo C I may personally disagree with Kyle's views on the Prequels, but he definitely brought the best insight with speculation and reflection on the films in an episode of Jedi Council to date. His point about Rey having some sort of connection to the Skywalkers being a much stronger route thematically in resonance with the rest of the films was spot-on. I definitely hope to hear from him again on this show.
Kyle is a fantastic guest. Hope to see him back soon!
+Julius kovacs please bring him back
+Dinos Go Rawr completely agree. He adds a whole new perspective on the show. Would love to see him added to the show more regularly.
+Dinos Go Rawr Fucking A!
+Julius kovacs Yes finally someone there who defends the prequel, lol and you notice they didnt have a reply either. I've notice when you put the originals in a corner they just say it didnt feel like star wars in all reality they just want the same rehash story retold. Thats why they hate the prequels because it was different creative, this force awakens is used and rehashed and they love it.
Twist what facts? People who like it grade it at 9/10, so the criticism isn't really criticisms is it? To me going into the movies watching all the old ones which disney knew and wanting selling the dvd's at above market price someone had to say people gonna want something new! Something different. But no this is nothing more than a big orgy for the originals, no mythology like the prequels those fans are ass out of luck! Guess we werent loud enough no this is a slap in the face to the director and creator, I find it so funny when fans say the prequels doesn't "feel" like a star wars. Never knew they was talking about a complete reboot.
Kyle is probably the best guest JC has ever had. Calm, collected, extremely articulate and a very knowledgeable fan.
I listen to the Jedi Counsel every episode, but I've never commented. I just want to say that Kyle Newman was a standout. His knowledge, thoughts, and incites regarding the Star Wars universe had real depth and I loved his presentation/conversation style. You have to get him on the show more often!
I just noticed something about Rey's Saber fighting style....anyone else see this? She does the same move of using the saber as a 'spear', and not just once: it's a go-to move for her. It's the same thing Palpatine did when he fought Wendu, and he's the only one that ever used that stabbing style with the exception of Luke when he was enraged and beat Vader down in Jedi. Further, Rey also uses a two hand overhead 'chop' move like it's an axe. I think Anakin used this one once or twice, but I might be wrong. For sure, she's doing the Palpatine saber stab though. Makes me wonder.
Kyle Newman's analysis is awesome. He should become a regular. He is more knowledgable than the other panellists and his arguments and perceptions are spot on.
eurosensazion My comments were about his analysis of TFA and how he cleverly ties that into the overall story of the SWU.
He is also spot on about the Skywalkers being the heart of it, however I think they could easily move beyond them with the Anthology films. The SWU is large enough to tell the story of other (main) characters. Asohka Tano was awesome in TCW.
I dislike the prequels and although we should just accept them and move on (as Kyle does) I feel the same way as John about them. Despite it's many flaws this film has reminded us just how good Star Wars can be when you have a good team at the helm.
Lucas dropped the ball with Star Wars big time and to make things worse he's never admitted his mistakes or apologised for them.
+TheShreester Why would he admit failure when he doesn't believe he failed? What failure are you talking about? Your disappointment that he didn't make movies to your expectations? Why would he apologise, about what and to who? Whiny butthurt, fanboys? Come on, get over yourself. If you don't like the prequels then too bad, they are what they are. You paid your money, you got a fair exchange but you didn't like it. Bad luck, don't come back for more.
Jack Ripper Lucas made unecessary changes to the OT decades after the films were released. He also attempted (unsuccessfully) to remove from circulation the original versions of these films, despite their obvious cultural significance and impact.
He could've instead just released the new versions into circulation, along with the old, but instead felt "he knew best" and didn't want anyone watching the older versions because they didn't live up to his own expectations. He didn't understand their importance to fans or appreciate their quality as movies.
He carried this same arrogance over into the PT, where his over enthusiasm with using CGI to turn his vision into reality caused him to overlook the inherent limitations of this technology (which was still in it's infancy) while underestimating the importance of a character focused story driven by actors acting off of each other (rather than green/blue screens).
In the fall of Darth Vader, Lucas had a potentially awesome story to tell with almost guaranteed box office returns given the success of the OT. For the first time, he was able to make his films exactly how he wanted, relying on a dedicated fanbase who he could be sure would pay to see them.
However, his execution of this story was poor. His representation of the convoluted politics of the Galactic Republic was boring. His depiction of the romance between Padme and Anakin was unconvincing. His portrayal of Anakin's fall from grace was disappointing and rushed.
As for not coming back for more, I didn't. I don't regret paying to see each of the prequels on the big screen but that doesn't change the fact they were mediocre films (at best) that remain unpopular with many fans.
However, I enjoyed watching TFA and will be seeing the new films in the cinema.
+eurosensazion b-b-b-but the PT ruined my childhood
TheShreester Lucas made the films HE wanted to make and he has every right to edit them and change them until he is satisfied with the result. "He knew best"?!! Of course he knew best, he created them, funded them and produced them. Lucas was making the films for himself not for fans and to suggest he was arrogant just smacks of arrogance on your part. Exactly what input did you have in the creation of Star Wars? I can safely answer for you: Zero! You may think buying a ticket, the books, merchandise etc, etc, entitles you to some say in all this but it doesn't. The only arrogance I see is from know nothing, 'know all fans' that think they somehow have the authority to tell Lucas that they know better than he does, as if they have some sort of ownership of Star Wars. Guess what? This may come as a bit of a shock and a reality check but you don't. Never have and never will. You may rate the PT in whatever manner you wish, big deal, that's an opinion and only an opinion, and you may share that opinion with some 'fans', not all, not most, just some.
I have a theory about the Kylo Ren and Han Solo moment.
Kylo Ren had said he was conflicted, he knew what he had to do but didn't know of he had the strength. I believe when Han and Ren both held the sabre, I think Han pointed the sabre at himself. Han killed himself so his son wouldn't have to. Leaving hope for him in films to come!
"You don't like the prequels or you don't like the special editions. You don't like Star Wars." Finally someone gets it! You don't have to like the prequels, true. But respected. I love this guy!!
+T.O. Media Studio Yea, it was really refreshing to hear the guest say this! This is how I treat the prequels but I've never heard anybody on this show (or Movie Talk) state this :)
I get what he was saying but it's not that simple, that's like saying if in 10 years they make 7 more Harry Potter movies and I hate them, then that then means that I'm now not a Harry Potter fan, which would be completely false as I love Harry Potter, same goes for everyone who grew up with the OT and disliked the prequels, or just doesn't like them (like me) and still loves it to buy the merch and it be a big part of my life.
+T.O. Media Studio Kyle Newman sold me on that alone. It just got better & better with him throughout the show from there. He's the best guest Jedi Council has ever had. I really hope they have him on again!! I couldn't agree with what he said there more!
+T.O. Media Studio And we didn't hear one word from John whining about the prequels.
+TheJennyWalaShow John didn't dare whine about the prequels. Kyle would destroy him because Kyle fucking gets it.
Kyle Newman was such a great addition. Knew his canon, the history, added a lot to the conversation. I would love to see him return.
Kyle is a great guest. Would love to see some level headed guest like him on heroes.
I like that Kyle doesn't just blindly disregards the prequel lore. He embraces it and makes it sound all compelling.
Joey B. I reckon Rey is a palpatine
"I'm a prequel-character - BOOM!" LMAO! Dear God, how I LOVE your guys & this show! I missed Kristian & his added passion to all your wonderful discussions but you sure compensated his absence with the perfect guest! Please, invite Kyle more times if he can & wants to appear because he added another depth & also intelligent level to all of this. Not that you guys are not always intelligent in your SW fandom & how you express it but he just added something, an insight & also chemistry that made this one of the best Jedi Councils to date! Thank you!
I could listen to Kyle talk about Star Wars all day. Excellent guest! His interpretation of a new way of the Jedi via Luke and the idea of love and attachment being allies of the force is something I've been expecting and anticipating since the idea of a new trilogy came into being.
I was kind of hoping that the Jedi Council would be live
+Dasaun McClinton I thought they did say it would have been
+Dasaun McClinton Sometime during the week, JC must have decided to do one last-last Jedi Council because Kristian Harloff said the previous episode of Jedi Council would be the last one of 2015. But I'm thrilled they changed their mind and did ONE more!
Please get Kyle Newman back on Jedi Council more! A refreshing voice and it's good to hear someone who isn't constantly criticizing the prequels, but respects and appreciates them and the elements in them. He's right as well, the force ghosts have got to appear in the sequel trilogy! Anakin is the most important of them as well, as it's his family who is central to this trilogy. But I would love to see Obi Wan and Yoda again. Happy New Year fellow Star Wars fans!
Can Kyle-o Newman be a permanent host on the show? He's like a font of wisdom. Even if I disagree with some of his opinions, I understand and enjoy his reasoning.
Thank God for Kyle Newman. What a breath of fresh air on Jedi Council. He talks sense and doesn't bullshit on about nothing AND is an actual true fan of Star Wars! He's articulate, reasoned, considered and actually thinks through his comments before talking. Unlike the others, who on previous shows, invent scenarios based on their hatred for Lucas and the PT and go off on wild rants that are totally figments of their own minds. He's not a hater, he might not like parts of the PT or parts of the other episodes, but he appreciates the story and accepts it. He doesn't whine about things, he says this is why i don't like this or that, no complaining about Lucas, no complaining about the PT, he just moves on. The quote of the show was when he said: "If you don't like the prequels and you don't like the special editions and you don't like episode 7 then get out of here, you don't like Star Wars". Stony silence from Campea! Brilliant! Please, please, please can we have Kyle back on more often or better still; just him and forget about the other turkeys. Considering his views are worlds apart from Campea, Harloff and crew it's obvious why he makes so few appearances but after putting Campea in his place, I doubt we'll see him again.
This Newman guy is really good. Bring him back to the Council one day. The force is strong with this one.
HUGE SPOILER ALERT: Rey is the daughter of Leia Skywalker and Obi Van´s son (not yet introduced). Leia had a second husband after Han Solo. J.J. said she was not a Skywalker, she is a Kenobi. So Ben Solo is her older half brother. Th question was never who was the father but who is her MOTHER. Sorry guys thats it!
Kyle should be on every episode
I don't agree with him on everything, but he's very well spoken and intelligent and knows his Star Wars shit
Brilliant guest and so refreshing to have a composed, intelligent fan giving an in depth point of view rather than the loud, sometimes arrogant emotional response from the usual set up.
+Craig Hicks to me, the reason it works so well is because you have Ryan's quiet intelligence to play off of John's passion and emotion that plays off of Mark's humor. It's just a great combination (still would've preferred to have Kristian on as well because, duh, he's Kristian motherfuckin' Harloff)
+marnat61 yeah. I have no idea why I said "Ryan"???
+sinister kiid I agree, I would like to see him with Schnepp, who can be sometimes narrow minded with his opinion.
Rewatched this again. I must say Kyle Newman is the best guest I have seen on this show. I would love to see him and Kristian Harloff do Jedi Council together discussing Star Wars in general, Star Wars Episode 8 and Rogue One! This guy knows his stuff and has great enthusiasm
1:12:00 "you don't have to like the movies, respect the story" my thoughts exactly.
I love everything Kyle said. Here is a guy who seems to understand the star wars universe on a deeper and more symbolic level. Its nice to finally listen to someone who does not hate the prequels, and like myself was able immersive himself in the story which Lukas trie,d and in many ways succeeded in telling, from start to finish.
Can Kyle Newman be on the Council more often, he's very informative, very great to listen to? I need a conversation between Kristian and Newman, that'd be interesting and nerdy af. Please.
+joshyday98 Kyle, Mark and Kristian would make for a great Council ... Campea could be a guest from time to time, I guess. But sadly, Kyle is the guest and Campea has to stay.
Bring back Kyle Newman more often. This guy is great. His passion is great, and along with the rest of you...just absolutely love the long thought out answers and questions. Good times.
From what I've gathered R2-D2 only woke up because BB-8 came up to him and let him know that the missing piece was in his possession. Then R2 began compiling the data on the jedi temples that he had in his archives to create the map. At the end of the movie he went to full power mode and provided the rest of the map.
I agree with this. However, it is not very clear when watching the film. Seems like they could have made it a bit more obvious. There seen to be multiple reasons why people think R2 just woke up all of a sudden. In this video alone, you get three of them. Kyle was about to talk about the one you outlined here (which I think is the correct one) when he says, "BB-8 was knocking on R2's front door." Then somehow we get to Mark talking about R2 gets activated because Rey shows up on the planet and I believe Campea mentions something about Luke remotely activating R2 from afar. So yeah, five seconds of more explanation could have saved all this speculation on the matter.
+Mark Rodriguez I agree 100%. JJ has said as much.
+Mark Rodriguez Yes, JJ confirmed this. R2 had the files from the first Death Star, where they had an incomplete map from the first Death Star.
I thought he woke up because Rey was around and she's strong with the force. He went into low power mode when Luke left so when Rey appears he's awoken.
+MirandaH96 Here's the article... www.ew.com/article/2015/12/20/jj-abrams-answers-burning-question-about-r2-d2-star-wars-force-awakens
It's just my opinion, but the trilogies have always been about the Skywalkers. If Kylo can not be redeemed, they need someone to carry on the line. If they are going to have nobody Jedi, do it in stand alone films.
Kyle Newman needs to appear on ''Jed Council'' a lot often, he gives such a fresh air comparing to these narrow minded Prequel haters and comes up with really valid theories and good explanations, we need more like him!...
(My thumb up only for Kyle Newman!)
+Ravek And that's what any self-proclaimed Star Wars fan should and would do.
I love this Kyle Newman individual. THANK YOU for being the first person to echo a view shared by many about why most of this stuff doesn't qualify as spoilers for Star Wars. This was a great discussion overall though guys. Nice episode!
I know why John doesn't like the Kanja club scene. He is just jealous of Ellis getting a role in a Star Wars film. Come on John be happy for your friend.
Tell that to kanjiklub
The biggest problem with that scene is like they mentioned, it took place in the middle of a forest in the middle of nowhere. Like ... What?!
yeah I really like the mark Ellis cameo
Lol
You think Mark 2D2 will make a cameo appearances in future films
Kyle was an awesome guest. Very knowledgeable, insightful and charismatic. He'd be a great host. Great episode all around, good job guys!
this guy is really really smart, and seems to know his shit..great guest guys
Kyle Newman is one of the better guests you've had on the show. A real fan, very informative and thoughtful with comments and speculation.
Snoke: Rey, you have NO family.
(dun dun dun DUN...DUN DUN...DUN DUNDUNNNNNNN)
Rey: Noooooooooooooooooo!
+MaffmanJones Ok I have this crazy idea Kylo Ren has gone to the dark side when his genesis is from the light side. Rey's genesis is from the dark side but she fights for the light side. Imagine that a child of the dark side fighting the child of the light side except they chose opposite sides of the force from which they are born from.
I have to make a play for force birth the reason why that idea was so despised because of MIDICHLORIANS, if they never mentioned that word and used better ways to explain at how Anakin was from the force then that would have been a cool idea, yeah he is like Space Jesus so what this is Scify FANTASY.
I actually found the mythology of the force being able to create life and stop death very fascinating. It is like the forbidden arts that the Jedi never speak of and it was something that the Sith tried to master. It was Anakin's obsession with life and death because of his own creation that eventually corrupted him to turn to the dark side. Yoda even says it in the originals before dying himself that it is nature of life to become one with the force and no one should mess with that otherwise the dark side will consume you. It is like creating Horcruxes in Harry Potter, death is natural, to wanting to stop death is like selling your soul to the devil.
I loved Kyle's enthusiasm for innovation that is in the Prequels, that is Star Wars man it is supposed to create new ideas whether it works or not is another thing but without innovation I don't see how it can survive. Rey being some dark clone of a sith lord would be ground breaking in terms of Star Wars mythology and the theme of you have the power to choose your destiny despite your creator.
God I hope they dob't go that route and give us an ironic play on "I'm your father".
Just don't do it. I understand it's probably tempting but sometimes you need to just let it go.
+Mirthula Govindaraj I thought it would be cool if she was the daughter of Palpatine. That would have to make her older then Kylo, but maybe she just looks young.
But the Idea that she's luke's daughter seems ridiculous, first of all it's just way too obvious. It wasn't obvious at all that Kylo would be Han's son. I saw it posted as a spoiler and didn't even believe it as it seemed so ridiculous. Making her Luke's daughter would just be boring.
+takanara7 It didn't surprise me that Kylo was his son, but I knew the story from the EU when his son Jacen fell to the Darkside.
It makes perfect sense that she's Luke's daughter, and would provide many dramatic opportunities as they get to know each other.
An explanation is also easy for why she's on Jakku; either he thought she was dead, or Rey's mother fell to the Darkside, Luke had to kill her, then couldn't face Rey.
+takanara7 actually to me that is the only logical explanation for her beating a confirmed skywalker untrained plus kylo knows her so theres that
I've been watching since day one of Jedi Council and will continually be watching&listen to podcast. Other than Kristian not being in this episode/ video, this has been my favorite one. Kyle Newman is a breath of fresh air! He talks about everything I wanted to hear and the way he talk about it. Hope to see more of him on this show!
1:12:00 - "You have to look at Star Wars as a Six Film Saga. You don't have to like the movies, respect the story..."
1:13:10- "And if you don't like the prequels & you don't like the special editions & you don't like Episode 7, then get outta here......you don't like Star Wars." - Couldn't have said it better!!
First off, I very much like Kyle. The dude is intelligent and analytical. He clearly does not allow his emotions to influence his viewpoints/ judgements. Rather, he looks at the series in its totality. Good job. I'd actually would like to see him on the Council(maybe as a permanent member).
His comments on Luke in the beginning are so spot on. Going by the movies(Despite me loving the EU), if there was one thing I loved about Luke Skywalker(favorite movie character), was his unwillingness to give up. His willpower was something that was very admirable. Case in point, Empire Strikes Back, where he nearly commits suicide after knowing who his father is; the fact he decided to live on, despite that stunning revelation, showcases a great character.
But on top of that Return of the Jedi, Luke's willingness to save his father, even after practically everyone who is close to him has stated that is impossible, again showcases why I love this character. So it is these facts that I really want Luke to NOT be like Yoda and refuse to train Rey. I understand why he'd be hesitant, given Kylo(SPOILERS), his own nephew, destroyed the New Jedi Order; but for Luke to just shy away betrays his whole character.
Heck, I'd love to see him training other Force Sensitives so as to make an underground Jedi Order. One where the First Order and Ren cannot find. Overall, great podcast, as always.
Great episode! I hope Kyle can come back more often- he has my favorite opinions on Star Wars :)
kyle just articulated so succinctly all the different theories i've been mulling over and thought of on my own just shooting ideas back and forth with friends. only difference is that he gives a few more really good reasons for why each one could work. really enjoyed his commentary guys!
She's the granddaughter of that girl who crashed on Endor and fought the Witch king of Angryman... uhhhhhh
+RyanRyzzo Cindel? Her brother was called Mace lol
Paul Kendrick
*GASP*
Cindel and Mace!
+RyanRyzzo SOME EWOK ADVENTURES REP, AWW YEAH :') wow, what a blast to the past...
Call me crazy Ezra trained Ben Skywalker (Kylo Ren), Ezra trained by Maul who told ezra call me old Master. Episode 8 Ezra and Kylo are the founders of the Knights of Ren, Rey is Ezra's kid, Snoke is sitting in that thorne of his that's the same tempel where Ezra met Maul (call me old master) Snoke is Maul?
Really enjoyed having Kyle here. Very knowledgable and articulate. Great guest.
"You don't have to like the movies respect the story" Quote of the Week!
Can Kyle Newman be a regular on this show? I love listening to him talk. He has so much love and passion for the entire Star Wars universe.
I have one question in regards to Vader's helmet. Anyone else catch the part when Kylo Ren takes off his helmet to talk to Rey and he puts it down into what looks like a bunch of ashes? I get the feeling those are Vader's ashes...
+Jason Miller They mention this at 38:00
+Jason Miller wouldn't it be inappropriate to do so?
***** for the grandson and admirer
+the tourist Star wars characters don't have a totally different set of morals than people in real life. There is literally no reason it would be respectful to drop his helmet in Vader's ashes, and they wouldn't do something like that without explaining it. Vader was also cremated, like people on earth. Stop acting like everything in Star Wars is alien for the sake of being alien. Han is a smuggler, Luke is farm boy, etc. Star Wars is Earth mythology in space, not totally relative.
Whoa, please have Kyle back. This dude knows Star Wars and his excitement is awesome. Best episode of Jedi council ever.
Really liked this guest this week!
Poor Mark. Virtually ignored the whole time whilst John and Kyle looked into each others eyes and griped a lot.
Great show guys. Kyle Newman should definitely come back.
+Jean but first bring Adi back!
keep this guy on Jedi Council FROM NOW ON. he's great to listen to.
Guess if I was on the show then I would already know what my Star Wars name would be.
kylo Ren?
+Ren Davis Warwick Ren?
PrettysureItsInfectd Thank you.
Paul Kendrick Lol. Interesting thing is that my full name is Renwick Davis.
Ren Davis Ha ha, that's an awesome name, mate!
I loved Kyle! He needs to come back more! He is finally someone who represents me as a Star Wars fan. I know the prequels aren't good films, but I like them as the Star Wars stories they tell. And that for me is what a true fan does, not for instance what Campea does and focuses on the negative just because he's a butthurt fanboy.
Kyle Newman keeps it real about Star Wars
Kyle is an awesome guest, love listening to him talk about his views and insight onto the film and universe. Very entertaining, hope he comes back soon!
IMO, legacy, heritage and *inheritance* are the main themes that are going to play out here. *That's* why the Skywalker lightsaber went to her. The fight between Kylo and Rey - having these themes - mirrors many historical struggles between cousins over a family inheritance/legacy: from Matilda vs Stephen, to the entire War of the Roses. And that only works if Rey's claim on that heritage, legacy and inheritance is equal to or greater than Kylo Ren's. And that is through a blood-tie. Her being Luke's daughter would make her claim to the Skywalker legacy *greater* than Kylo's . . . and reinforce Han Solo telling Ben that Snoke is just using him for his power and will throw him out once he's done. Why would he throw Ben - who has Skywalker blood - out? For someone who's Skywalker blood-claim was even stronger. IMO, that's Rey.
How dare you come here and give a well thought-out and considered perspective with past literary examples to back up your claims.
This is the place you come to say, "Rey is Palatine's clone. I think it was in a book. LOLZ!"
By the way, I think you are 100% correct
Not only that but i also read the novelization and like Kyle said Kylo suspected who she was when he entered her mind and then knew when the lightsabe came to her and not him
+Gilmartin Pares ...and that would explain why she was dumped on a barren planet into the hands of Unkar Plutt (most likely by Kylo Ren) to live the rest of her life as an anonymous scavenger. Out of sight, never knowing who she is.
Jack Ripper i have seen the movie 4 times and if you think aboit it the first time the officer talks to kylo about " a girl" kylo is like "WHAT GIRL??!!!!"
Gilmartin Pares As in "WHAT GIRL? What are you talking about? I don't know no girl!" or "What Girl?!! Not that girl I dropped off on Jakku 20 years ago to get her out of the way so I could claim the rights to the Skywalker fortune? Oh shit, she's still alive!"
Great episode! Hope Kyle is a returning guest for 2016. Well spoken and great insight.
A colleague pointed out to me today: "If they've got spaceships, why didn't they drop her off at the top of the island?"
+Paul Kendrick oh my god! lol
Then she would not get to have a dramatic walk to the top.
+Paul Kendrick Then we miss the epic ass shot at the beginning of her climb. :)
There's no room at the top for the Falcon to land, it's skinny at the top hence no room
Because we need more John Williams music as she climbs...
I gotta go straight to saying LOVED THE GUEST - Kyle Newman. Some hole saga love and respect from that dude! Refreshing to see in Jedi Council. LOOOVED IT since the others seem always bashing but they kinda kept their cool on this episode. Should be more like this at other times.
John didn't defend his not luke's daughter theory very much. She is obviously luke's daughter.
He made a whole video about it on his channel john campea
+slicer141 lol yeah cause he knows he's outnumbered by smarter people on real shows.
+Ab G Esquire By that logic, English accent = Palpatine
Unless they're trying to get you to think that only to surprise u
+Ab G Esquire Because Obi-Wan gave the lightsaber to Luke and a great portion of the vision is about the history of this saber. Obi-Wan spoke that exact line to Luke when he first tapped into the Force to deflect the shots from the training drone with the blast shield on the helmet in front of his eyes. They probably rerecorded it because the tone of Alec Guinness' line didn't fit as well with the vision.
Kyle is so freaking insightful, I could listen to him talk starwars all day . Very very interesting
I'm just gonna lay this out there because it looks like everyone else is too afraid to. If Finn was white then everyone would think that he's Rey's sole mate. The reason why people are assuming the friend zone is because all the Skywalkers generally look alike all the way from Shimi Skywalker to Rey and Ben. Let's just say If Finn got with Rey then I don't think the new line of Skywalkers would resemble their grandparents anymore lol.
I apologize if I've offended anyone. It was certainly not intentional.
+peterthesneakybastar Didn't once cross my mind that him being black had anything to do with it. This kind of thing only really crosses peoples mind who do think about difference in race/colour. Something you may want to think about yourself.
+Phoenix0nFire88 Well if you want to keep an open mind you should think about everything. I don't think most people directly thought about this I believe when they considered the two to have a future together there's a good chance race dwelled up in their sub conscience making them want to feel like it wasn't going to happen. This wasn't because they are against different race marriage. It's because, like I said before, it would destroy the general trend of things meaning the Skywalkers from then on would lose their iconic look. This is because blacks have the dominant gene in skin color and certain facial structures.
+itsdastuff lol wtf is a yank?
+itsdastuff he has a point... For some reason no one thinks they are going to be together unlike when they said Luke and Leia
Kyle is an amazing guest. His views don't follow the general views of fans. He hasn't let theories or anything change how he sees the views.
*They say Rey's the Awakening, but it's likely to be Finn*
At the beginning of The Force Awakens, after Ben had captured Poe and was marching back to the ship, he came to an abrupt stop, and in a frenzy of rushing Stormtroopers he stared right at Finn. Sensing something. And sometime after Snoke mentions the Awakening that he and Ben have felt. This is almost immediately after the Jakku/Finn incident. Before we meet Rey, and before she knows anything about the Force.
That's not bad
+Bart Allen I tend to believe Finn MAY have the Force somewhere in him as well. I think that "sub-conscience" that lead him to not be able to kill, not be able to be a Trooper....that very well could have been the Force guiding him, drawing him away. I also tend to believe there may be more between Ren and Finn than we are led to believe. There is Maz Kanata's assessment of him, which could be take literally (someone who wants to run) or on multiple levels. I think the way he senses certain things (he immediately looks to the sky when he hears the screams) was either just...lazy writing...or dumb luck...but as Obi-Wan says, there's no such thing as luck....or The Force.
Now, my guess is if he is Force sensitive, it is very, very early on in its rumbling. But, I do think it's there.
+melynn44 Well Maz recognised Finn instantly, but regarding Rey simply asked Han, "Who's that girl?".
Also there's the suggestion that Finn heard the screams of Hosnian Prime before it exploded (which he clearly did looking back), similar to how Obi-Wan heard the screams of those on Alderaan.
*It's one of the reasons why I personally believe Finn's a descendant of Obi-Wan's; especially as J.J was looking for a black/mixed race actress for the role of a potential descendant of Ben's prior to shooting; look into that ~*
Did you watch the movie?
He stared at Finn because he could sense his conflict of wanting to get out of there, not because he's force sensitive. If Finn was the person the force awakened in it would be clear, but it's 100% Rey that much is obvious. They wouldn't throw a double red herring making it look like Finn then saying "oh no it's Rey" and then saying "actually it is Finn see we got you!" No chance.
Bring this Kyle Newman guy back as much as possible this guy shares a lot of the same sentiments as I do, the prequels overall might not be the best thing but there are some amazing things in there that should be used
They really need to help folks understand that Rogue One is not Episode 8. I have already seen a magazine article that refers to it as the TFA's sequel. They also referred to the rebels as the bad guys.
Wow! I sure hope when you say magazine, you're referring to some online click-bait crap and not an actual journalistic printed magazine that has to be fact checked and approved by an editor. That would be scary.
It is a 100% real mag which a lot of people read. I thought it was pretty damn sad that they did not do a better job checking the author's facts before publishing the short article.
+patricia hidalgo moyeda I wouldnt really worry about it at this point. Most people dont even know the movie exists and there isnt even a trailer out for it yet.
You guys are so above and beyond anyone talking Star Wars right now (on TH-cam) besides Mr Sunday Movies.
Rey is a Kenobi(granddaughter). Or at least I hope.
Please bring this guy back! Best guest you've ever had.
i believe that the scene of luke and r2d2 by the fire is a funeral pyre for mara jade and he ran away because ben solo and snoke and the knights of ren killed mara jade skywalker and rey sky walkers mother and he mind wiped her because the pain and the feeling of revenge would've sent her down the path to the dark side or at least a gray jedi which he didn't want for his own daughter, i believe that he wanted to go out on his own so he could fight to the death and not worry about his daughter dying, or being turned to the dark side and him being so scared and surprised when he sees her in the ending is because now all the sky walkers are in one place and could either be wiped out by the knights of ren and snoke and that his daughter is powerful and important enough piece in the puzzle created by the force that they need to be brought together.
I love this Kyle Newman, he's so eloquent and has just made me think of TFA in ways I hadn't before. He needs to come back!
Did any one noticed that Rey strikes with light sabre in a same way Palpatine does? She is doing this forward puncture strike at least 2 times during the fight, or I'm just imagine things?
+Przemyslaw Miernik I don't know about the Palpatine style but yea, I saw how Rey fights like she's using a poker. I'm sure her style was meant to represent her lack of formal training but that she's a natural with The Force and that it's just super strong IN her and that the Light is very strong IN her. I can hardly wait for Rogue One and then, Episode VIII - omg!
Yes like a stab move
I saw this but I just figured it's because her melee weapon of choice has always been a staff. She's clearly on the defensive before her "awakening" and I just thought she was trying to keep Kylo at bay in the same manner she would with her staff. Even after her awakening when she goes on the offensive, there are moments she wields the lightsaber like bo staff with some two handed twirling. I foresee a double bladed saber in Rey's future.
+Przemyslaw Miernik Nope you didn't imagine it. I felt that vibe too. Rey did the Palpatine forward thrust like twice during that fight
+Rob Preston I agree. Jedi council have hinted at this from the poster. I would love to see a Bastila type yellow double bladed saber but it will probably be blue or green.
Kyle Newman is the best guest on this show so far. Love his directorial and fanboy view on things.
A few questions here... 1st- Do you feel Mark Hamill will be able to recapture his role as Luke Skywalker? We haven't seen Luke since he was a young man, and now he's in a mentor role.. Mark Hamill hasn't been in Luke Character for 30 years, are you concerned? I am! 2nd- Will Fin be more machine than man in episode 8? He took a serious saber blow to the back/spine, and Star Wars movies love to give characters machine hands, and suits when injured... 3rd- Why do you think Lea never learned the ways of the force? Luke spoke to Lea about having the same power, in Return of the Jedi... Or maybe Lea does know more about the force than we know?? What do you guys think?
Lastly- Do you think it's a mistake to have Rian Johnson directing Episode 8, and not JJ Abrams?
I didn't like JJ directing so I think it's all good.
You make good points, now I'm thinking
Mark Hamill is an amazing actor. There's a reason he has a massive IMDB page and there's a reason not all of it is voice work. Not to discredit voice work. I think voice acting is just as incredible as real acting. But Mark Hamill can do it all. I think he'll definitely be able to recapture the Luke Skywalker we had in Return of the Jedi.
Listen Mark hammil has been acting those whole years its like riding a bike, second yeah finn will probably more machine than man or have something and third HELL YEAH IM EXCITED FOR RIAN JOHNSON AND NOT ABRAMS you are talking about the guy that directed and wrote looper people confuse him with the guy that made godzilla that was gareth Edwards who started doing rogue 1 and not Ep. 8
+Dano smith 1) I have zero doubts about Mark getting back in his role. I have more doubts about Carrie Fisher reprising hers, especially if the story demands for her to have larger role. She was one of my only (little) gripes about the film. I kinda felt they already altered the plot to let her stay in the base. Since it doesn't make sense for her character to not join Han to try and save their son. 2) I am hoping Finn will have some cool new design, but I hope they won't make him too much machine. He would remind me too much of Cyborg.3) I don't think it's a mistake to use a new directer for episode 8, but Ryan Johnson hasn't made that many films yet. We'll just have to see what he does with it, but I am confident he'll do great!
Great guest. Kyle Newman was very informative and knowledgeable about all things Star Wars
Rey is 19 years old in the film and has been on Jakku since she was 10...If her mind was wiped by the force, does that mean she was trained ( if the rumours are true) at a young age of 10?
Look at the younglings in the prequels. I'd say most of them were around 10 years old. So it makes sense.
Most apprentices were taken as infants and toddlers before the fall of the Republic. In episode one, they comment that Anakin is too old to begin training. So yeah, starting training around then should surprise no one.
How do you know her age
MirandaH96 force awakens visual dictionary.
+Leo Anakin was around 8 or 10 years old in TPM and Yoda considered him too old to be trained... from a certain point of view, I guess, since Luke is much older in ANH and seems pretty quick to learn the ways of the force.
Awesome to see Kyle back. I have been waiting for you to bring him back since the first episode. Brilliant guest!
Kyle O'Ren - The Irish Knight
Need to add that this was a really great episode by Kyle Newman. He should be on more often. He adds a lot to the show.
Kyle is a great guest, knows his stuff and has some great ideas. Hope to see him more in future Jedi Counsels!
John Campea seems so blindly apposed to Rey being Luke's daughter, like he simply doesn't want that. It's made so clear and just makes her character cooler, what's the big deal?
I completely agree, he hasn't shared any reasoning yet why that wouldn't be the case.
+Ravek Possibly. But she could be from another lineage of jedi or Sith. A Kenobi or a Palpatine relative-[ie Grandaughter] would be interesting. How about luke as the father and a Kenobi as the mother- that would be kinda cool, but my favorite is a powerful ancient blood line of none other than Revan and Bastila Shan with Rey building her own double bladed light saber similar to the one Bastila used. I know Revan and Bastila are no longer canon but they can cherry pick characters from the EU. Probably won't happen but that would be my personal choice if I was doing the movie.
I really like the guest you had on this show. He seems to really know his stuff and I appreciate that he read the novel and was able to throw in some of that flavor into the conversation since there were a few things that were illuminated a little more.
I'm new to the Star Wars stuff. I have only seen TFA. What's Rogue One about? I'm kinda lost with that. This is also only my second Jedi Council.
+Bebo18 Rogue One will be a sort of stand-alone, spin-off film about a group of rebels who infiltrate the Empire to steal the plans to the first Death Star. It will be set (timeline-wise) right before episode IV.
Rogue One is the first Star Wars anthology film. The first spin off movie in the new Era of Star Wars. It will be set right before the original Star Wars Star Wars Episode IV A New Hope during the opening crawl of A New Hope it says
It is a period of civil war. Rebel spaceships, striking from a hidden base, have won their first victory against the evil Galactic Empire.
During the battle, Rebel spies managed to steal secret plans to the Empire's ultimate weapon, the DEATH STAR, an armored space station with enough power to destroy an entire planet.
Rogue One will be detailing that battle and story of how the Rebel Alliance stole the plans to the Death Star
+Cory Weston thank you
+Traci Monk thank you
+Bebo18 Your mission needs to be to watch at least the OT
Kyle is a fantastic guest please have him again, learned a lot.
Some thoughts that Rey maybe a Solo.
1. Twins run in the Skywalker family.
2. Rey's blaster & holster in the last scene is worn like her fathers.
3. When Rey was talking about never seeing a planet so green it appears to me that Han's reaction was one of feeling some guilt.
4. Rey &Leia's hug was not a "strangers" hug, movie making a point.
6. Rey placed into hiding by Han & Leia after Snoke gets a hold of Ben. Have too keep her "safely anonymous."
8. Han wants to "hire" her to keep her close until the time is right to tell her that he is her father.
9. Rey is great with flying & fixing the Falcon, just like Han
10. The movie focuses on Solo side of the family tree and how they deal with the burden of being part of the "chosen one" lineage.
kylo Ren will have a double sided lightsaber like darth maul, but one side will be blue and the other side will be red😮
I actually believe ren will be redeemed and become a force user of the light side, and the dark.
No, that was VERY early concept art
Great to see Kyle here, everything he had to say was incredibly insightful, stuff I hadn't really considered when thinking about opportunities to tie into the larger story of the prequels. Very creative, you should have him on more often, would also love to see him work on the franchise given how much emphasis he puts on the long term story arc.
I may be dumb, but does anyone else see a resemblance from THE SON from The Clone Wars to Snoke?
Yea, I watched CW S3:E15-17 for the first time yesterday and I was wondering same thing. Kyle just mentioned the Celestials and Mortis, The Ones!
+Beejo - I see a resemblance of The Son to the Grand Inquisitor from sw rebels. The shape of his head and the color of his skin is similar to Snoke.
Eddie the Animal
Yea - just minus any "make up" Snoke's face is damaged and twisted with scars - no make up or face paint.
Yeah, but they won't make any big reveal anything to do with the TV shows, because not enough people know them well.
Nope they both dont have hairs and there similarity ends.
Happy New Year, Jedi Council! I really enjoyed Kyle Newman's knowledgeable and articulated opinions on this episode, what a great guest. Have him back on soon!
Kyle Newman is the anti Max Landis.
Okay. Kyle Newman has my respect and my attention. Very informed, concise, well-spoken and clear. Looking forward to more reviews from you, sir.
My problem with the new SW is how they deal with the new new death star. It is exactly the same in the new hope........
+Jesse Hanowell but why do they have the "weak point" for the rebels to exploit again just like the Death Star? JJ could easily come up other ways to blow it up.
+Jesse Hanowell How about not being them not being so lazy when writing it and just not having yet another super weapon at all that is easily blown up if you take one fighter and shoot it in the right place. Is that so hard?
I mean come on, with the resources and material that would have went into making that thing, they could have made thousands of Star Destroyers and reconquered the galaxy in a few months.
10-20-30 Star Destroyers could destroy a plant with orbital bombardment. It was a stupid decision to have another death star in this movie. It was included only because they copied the rest of episode 4 almost scene for scene so they must have thought why not.
+Stevo C the film had a similar plot to a new hope but is still very different from it but hey blindly go the bandwagon hate train.
+Manny Gober ''blindly go the bandwagon hate train''
Hate bandwagon? Haha i loved the movie. But i'm not a rabid fanboy who needs to blindly defend something that is stupid. And there is plenty stupid in this movie. Starkiller base being the giant planet sized elephant in the room.
Lets be honest they changed characters and scenarios around. But if you watch Episode 4 and then 7 (second viewing) shortly after like i did with a critical eye. You will see that virtually every major plot point scene is similar to a New Hope. The opening ten minutes alone is pretty much identical to Ep. 4.
Despite it being a great movie, i think they crossed the line from homage to virtual remake with this one. Heres hoping we get a bit more originality in the next two.
+Stevo C Spot on.
This is an EXCELLENT Jedi Council!! I really enjoyed Kyle's comments! Bring him back and keep up the great work!!
does shes have a boyfriend? a cute boyfriend?
+Malik Tarrant comedy break lol
I read this in Finn's voice lol
Well not till she meets Poe
+Will Deus It's true, if you've read the book it sets up the Poe/Rey romance on a silver platter.
wow, amazing watching this a year later...this is a great discussion, great points by Kyle Newman on Rey being Luke's daughter
i like kyle but he butts in way too much
Agreed, has a lot on his mind. I think he forgets he's on camera which is fine, makes for a more in-depth discussion. But he has to ease up a little. He does know his stuff. Not sure if he does commentary on Star Wars but he should.
i agree he knows his stuff he just butts in a lot and barley looks at mark just at john
+Niall Gavagan Yeah! What was up with him ignoring Mark? Lol. It really annoyed me.
+the tourist how did he blow it this is a bunch of guys talking Star Wars he not giving a speech if there was so much pressure on that some one could "blow it" then they would lose there personality and lose what makes it enjoyable for people to watch these guys
I love this Kyle Newman guy. Only 20 some minutes in and I think this may be the best guest they've had. I love how he just thinks over everything so deeply. I'm not sure how I feel about the Luke's daughter thing, but I think just based on how she looks, it would make sense.
Best jedi counsel i've seen so far!!! Very refreshing to hear someone refer to the prequels without hating them.
What Is amazing about this show is that I can build my own thoughts about where they are going then they have a guest like this who can make me rethink things, awesome year guys can't wait for more episodes
The thing that resonates the most with me is John saying that the FORCE is trying to lead Rey to Luke. It's not about the lightsaber. That is a weapon, a tool, just as they described R2 earlier; it can not be force sensitive. However, the Force itself is calling out to Rey, leading her into situations and places where she will find people or items that will guide her towards Luke who will instruct and guide her further.
Rey being Luke's daughter would be an obvious movie trope. I can't help but look back and wonder what the big fan discussions and theories were after it was announced that the were making Empire.
Those fans, newly introduced to a brand new universe in a time where they didn't have 30 years of thought out, plotted, commercial cinema to draw on and build opinions from had no chance in hell of knowing what we know.
Back then, who would have imagined that Yoda, the wisest and strongest Jedi Master would be a short green muppet? Who would have guessed that Vader was Lukes father (Spoilers).
It is easy to look at this new movie and grumble about how much it resembles A New Hope, but does it matter? You either enjoyed this movie or you didn't.
In 2015 every one of us has seen every variation on a theme that you could imagine. View with new eyes and just let the story unfold as if you hadn't been force fed the plot for most of your life.
So yeah... Is Rey Lukes daughter? I personally hope not because there is no reason in a world without marketing departments that she would have to be in order for the story to unfold in an amazing and surprising way. But if she is, SO WHAT? Just weave a great tale around it and create a new legend that way!
Whoever Rey is, The Force is calling and she is gonna answer that call with a whole lotta kick ass.
Kyle knows his onions. Great watch. Also in the nationalisation, when Rey is left on Jakku, that person who leaves her, calls her 'Sweetheart'.I know only one person who uses that term and he's a Solo.
