Should Neck Guards be Mandatory for all Hockey players?

As someone who has had a wrist cut open by a skate that is far more dull than ones they would use in hockey, they would need a strong material to be able to stop a forceful skate. I've never been cut by anything as smoothly as I have that skate, and it took 5 minutes before I even realized I was cut and it was the blood that alerted me. I do think something needs to be done to prevent accidents like this, but it will not be easy to stop a skate.
They have developed neck guards that can stop a forceful blade at high speeds. They specifically use nylon and most popularly Kevlar that is very tough to break through. Kevlar is like chain-mill armor but shrunken down to a grain of rice. You may have also seen Kevlar in those knife protection glove videos.

no we dont adults can choose u cant control the world your entitled to think u have a say
i played in the game when the high schooler died. it was a scrimmage game just before our regular season in late 1975. there was a paramedic there, but the kid was gone at center ice. his last name was dragone. my teammate was rushing the puck and dragone stepped up to hit him at center ice and they both went down, getting tangled up. my friend stood up but accidentally hit his neck. there was no question of intent like this recent death. all we could do was watch in disbelief.

That was a vicious, and deliberate hit. Legs don't fly that way, unless you make them.
I was born in 2003, I’ve worn a neck guard for every single hockey game I’ve ever played in. I will never EVER decide to remove it unless it is restricting my ability to breath; then I’ll need a bigger neck guard. Just last year I was playing in Coquitlam and I got cross checked in the throat, if I didn’t have my neck guard I don’t think I would have been able to play for a while. It seems so stupid to me that professionals don’t wear them at all, when I first saw the Malarchuck incident in Buffalo from a highlight reel, it made me even more confused as to why players wouldn’t wear neck guards. The most likely way that would happen is if you were on the ice and a skate brushes your throat as you lay there or you get stepped on or kicked in a scrum. Please wear neck guards.
I have to disagree with you. I started playing in 98 and neck guards were not made mandatory until my senior year of high school. My travel team never made us wear them but I knew of other teams in my league that did make there players wear them. They are the most annoying and uncomfortable thing I have ever had to use in ice hockey
Are you just grandstanding, or… looking for attention?
As a goalie for most of my career. Wear a neck guard. Just a puck will feel like a full force punch to the neck. Do not risk it.
Why would I do that? That’s an experience I’ve had (getting cross checked in the neck) and I find neck guards very useful; they do their job and protect my neck from sticks pucks and skates - you don’t have to wear them yes… unless your local league had them as mandatory- but I highly recommend you use them. They have been improved since they were first introduced and before then a neck guard was a turtle neck sweater with a pad in it.

That was a routine play and shouldn't have been even a remote possibility of something lime that occurring. That is not a reasonable possible risk to suggest hockey players take.

Bro I play hockey, and I’m scared and sad because he was my fav player😮😢🙏 and the blood on the ice was insane
Neck guards in thin layers of kevlar do wonders it protects againgst all slash wounds and whit a bit of plastic it protects against crush injuries too.
I only really pay attention to extreme sports where deaths are fairly common. I’ve been an adrenaline junkie since I was a little kid. It always just seems strange to me when people want to overhaul a whole league because of one death. I’m used to the thought process of “damn, another one, rip, things will continue as normal”. I’ve had that thought about people I personally knew. But I guess it’s all just perspective
You would think after 2 players prior to this have had their neck sliced open by a skate that they would mandate neck guards
Yes the prior two were both goalies but the position shouldn’t matter
In my opinion, this death was very avoidable and very tragic
Goalies wear them. They are not meant to save your liife from a skate blade though. Never were, never will be. Karate kicks are what kill people.
F your neck guard. I've played my whole life and that's a stupid idea. Want my solution, don't let some absolute goon idiot go around the league kicking people in the face like their Jean Claude van daM. Why do some people's immediate thoughts when something bad happens always go to more control and power over everyone doing things the right way instead of looking at the person who is actually to blame.
Yes, exactly my thoughts
Well said!
@@cryptocat7442 thank you both I feel like I'm insane for thinking the most logical thing
@@Young71blood Sadly, common sense isn’t common anymore. 😟
People have been hit unintentionally in the neck with skates. As you know , this isn’t the first instance.
I play a Pepsi league and I've never worn a neck guard
Plekanec famously wore a turtleneck not a neck guard
neck guards should not become mandatory. The amount of times this has happened is not enough to constitute it.
While it incredibly rare, when it does happen, it's always some brutal and traumatizing moment. I'll vividly remember Zednik the rest of my life, and he luckily narrowly escaped with his life.
If a neck guard can make sure we never see this again, then I'm all for it.
@earboysport why cant we just decide if we want to wear them or not?
@@earboysport cogliano had is neck broke last year from a legal check in the playoffs. Should we get rid of hitting too because something bad could happen?
@@earboysportWhat about no letting a guy in the league, who jump kicks another player? What about sending a moron like that to jail? Or is his skin color too inconvenient for you?
Once is more than enough.
Yes, they should have been mandatory since that one incident were the goalie was cut in the throat. Before I moved to where I am now we had to wear Nick protesters or we would be penalized for like 10 minutes. Now where I live now the don’t care about it they only care about the mouth guards.
just went to a hockey game tonight and they had a speaking on him. what a great life gone too soon.
I played w one for so long that my neck used to feel cold without it lol
I will wear a neck guard, when the guy who literally jump kicked someone, with skates on his feet, is held accountable! When people who can’t even skate, want to mandate neck guards, so they don’t have to face that fact.
NO ONE JUMPED KICKED ANYONE.
@@ferst262 did you not see the incident 💀 I believe it was an accident
@@Benkett you believe, yet it was. Unless you can even give me a reason for a person to kill another in a minor professional league, in a regular season game, in a sport where you can just punch it out, in a game that was irrelevant, against a player he didn’t even have beef with,… why would he ever choose to KILL SOMEONE, like, it wouldn’t even make sense. And it was clearly an accident, you want it to be something else cause of your disturbed mind, nothing else
I don’t know if he tripped, but I don’t care anymore, because the video makes me sick
Sorry, I accidentally said no accident, I meant to say an accident
Here’s what I’d do:
Neck guards mandatory for all NEW players, if you played without one before the rule was made, you don’t have to
Similar to the helmet rule, and the visor rule
This makes me think of the Hextall situation and how this should’ve been addressed right then and there
I wore one when I was playing goalie in beer league hockey. Malarchuk and Zegras factored into that decision.
