One image shows a frame of 2d's leg and foot and wavy purple text, going across. the text is just the lyrics "do you look like me". the image looks like it's from a comic panel. before this there were rumours of a gorillaz comic series floating around. so the image posted inspired speculation among fans.
I think the messy lore adds up to Gorillaz charm, it feels like following real people, they can exaggerate, make up, misremember or even forget things, they have multiple accounts of some events and we can never be completely sure, unlike a series who needs to make sense for the fictional story to work here it feels right. Even if it isn't completely intended it mimicks the real deal unlike following something like Josie and the Pussycats. From the artstyle, to the music, to their story, Gorillaz appeal is having that chaotic energy.
Gorillaz was about anti-consumerism to begin with, yes, but in order to keep themselves in existence they need to do a ton of brand deals since they’re completely independent now. Turns out having all those collaborators, needing all the music videos to be animated, and securing massive venues for giant live shows is really hard to fund on the music alone. No one would be able to interview Murdoc in-universe if he was the only one left alive, after all.
