I have been in love with this band's lore ever since the Demon days album. Back then, if you went to the gorillaz website, the whole thing was a mini game where you got to explore the original Kong studios, and boy did they go hard on the detail with that. Its so nice to see the depth that they've gone to for this band's story. All the little details in the music videos that seem like just odd design choices at first, but there's actually explained reasons for them. Like the floating island! I knew the whole story with Jimmy Manson, but I never knew that they actually explained that the island could float because it was gutted and filled with helium. I truly believe no other band has ever been so purely creative through so many different mediums at once.
I was super into Gorillaz when i was in high school. I had their Rise of the Ogre book, all their cds, the limited editiom converse, even got to see them in concert during their Plastic Beach tour and was following with every new music video release and new lore hint they dropped. But eventually I kinda fell off the wagon keeping up with them so once Humanz came out i got the album but never evem listened to it. I just stayed up until 3:30am watching this 😂 the ending made me feel bittersweet. Like a big part of my adolescent years finally closed its chapter and crossed over into my adulthood. Its making me weirdly sentimental 😂 thank you for the in depth video! I can't wait to see where they go next.
I remember the Plastic Beach tour, and that Camden show. My friends and I went to that show because we had such a love for the Gorillaz and didn’t want to miss it. It still stands as one of the best shows I’ve ever seen. I remember they announced that Mos Def would not be able to make it due to flight issues, and mid way through the show, he came out as they started to play sweepstakes.

here's a theory: i think that murdoc has always been worshiping pazuzu, which is why we see the statue in old official art. but if we look at the last cult symbol we can see that the deity of the cult is also pazuzu. now in egyptian mythology pazuzu is a protection demon, which is what i think is the reason most of the band stopped aging. BUT i have a reason as to why noodle ages regularly, for most of the band members i think that they made a deal with murdoc to join the band, but with noodle she was just delivered by fed ex. what I'm saying is that she never made the deal, she just joined so Gorillaz so pazuzu's effect never took place on her. and now that the cult has disbanded i think that the rest of the Gorillaz will start aging correctly.
I only know the band because my mum heard the iPod ad with feel good inc and she got the single, and that's how I found them and ive been obsessed for 5+ years! Love the lore sm thank you for this, ive always had a bit of an issue getting it all together.

Honestly, I'm touched. There is so much love and soul in all of this, so much great work, so much incredible inspiration and message. I know that no matter what era someone lived in, there was always something they valued so much. Living in that era and having Gorillaz around is so comforting and uplifting. It's a shame they didn't have enough budget to film the Plastic Beach videos in their entirety, but it turned out the way it did and I was very happy that it was appreciated so much after all these years. The band is moving forward and this idea definitely suits them! Thanks for an amazing guide to the story!
I have been a semi-fan of Gorillaz when I first heard the song Dare (it was on Just Dance lmfaooo) And I started listening to their songs But I never knew any of the lore, now I do. Now I am a mega fan
First started listening to Gorillaz in 2005 when my then-SO gave me a Demon Days CD for my birthday-- as a teen I was still developing my music taste and I loved it, as it didn't sound like anything else that was on the radio or other albums which have not aged as well. Never knew any lore though, although I always liked Noodle's whole aesthetic and the idea of an animated band. This is so cool.
I love how Damon Albarn is one of the real creators of Gorillaz, but is a different person in the lore. I have known this for a while but I just wanted to say it here

Hi, I'm watching the video and enjoying the story, but I'm slightly confused. In what format was this lore delivered? Like where did the guy who made this video learn this info? Is it all in the songs and music videos if I just watch and listen to them all in order or is this from some kind of promotional material or accompanying book or something?
It’s all over the place 😂 For phases 1 and 2 there’s a book, rise of the ogre. Phase 3 there’s different booklets/Murdoc’s pirate radio show/videos, etc. Phase 5 even introduced talking to Murdoc directly through Facebook and phase 7 had podcasts, TikTok’s, so much to keep up with lol
Books mostly, Gorillaz back then had some very in detail side material that nowadays is out of print but that has survived thanks to archiving The first half for example all comes from the book Rise of the Ogre, including the illustrations you see
I wish there was an animated moviestarting at their lives leading upvto the band and everything that happened in and between the first two albums. I loved those albums as a child. I'm not as big a fan from plastic beach forward (still some great songs scattered in them) but nothing beats the feeling of those first two ❤️

Honestly, I'm touched. There is so much love and soul in all of this, so much great work, so much incredible inspiration and message. I know that no matter what era someone lived in, there was always something they valued so much. Living in that era and having Gorillaz around is so comforting and uplifting.
It's a shame they didn't have enough budget to film the Plastic Beach videos in their entirety, but it turned out the way it did and I was very happy that it was appreciated so much after all these years. The band is moving forward and this idea definitely suits them!

First started listening to Gorillaz in 2005 when my then-SO gave me a Demon Days CD for my birthday-- as a teen I was still developing my music taste and I loved it, as it didn't sound like anything else that was on the radio or other albums which have not aged as well. Never knew any lore though, although I always liked Noodle's whole aesthetic and the idea of an animated band. This is so cool.
I didn't like plastic beach at first but years later it became one of my favorites behind demon days

Like where did the guy who made this video learn this info?
Is it all in the songs and music videos if I just watch and listen to them all in order or is this from some kind of promotional material or accompanying book or something?

For phases 1 and 2 there’s a book, rise of the ogre. Phase 3 there’s different booklets/Murdoc’s pirate radio show/videos, etc. Phase 5 even introduced talking to Murdoc directly through Facebook and phase 7 had podcasts, TikTok’s, so much to keep up with lol
Books mostly, Gorillaz back then had some very in detail side material that nowadays is out of print but that has survived thanks to archiving
The first half for example all comes from the book Rise of the Ogre, including the illustrations you see
I wish there was an animated moviestarting at their lives leading upvto the band and everything that happened in and between the first two albums.
I loved those albums as a child.
I'm not as big a fan from plastic beach forward (still some great songs scattered in them) but nothing beats the feeling of those first two ❤️
