It is estimated that 90% of global trade is carried by ship, but little is known about the lives of the thousands of people who work in shipping and at sea. Now new research suggests that the rate of suicide is increasing among seafarers. In 2009 Amaha Senu left his home in Ethiopia to become a merchant seafarer, attracted by the financial opportunities. Soon he began to regret his decision and considered taking his own life. This film shows the pressures faced by people working at sea, an industry that employs more than 1.5 million people globally. as a seafarer myself , I too work from 9-10 months at sea but the outside world can never knew your stress level and sacrifices everyone outside just think its just like a fairytale life.

As a seafarer myself, I can attest to the fact that working in the shipping industry is not merely a job; it is a way of life!
It takes a special kind of individual to function in what is basically a small isolated community for weeks or months at a time. You have to know what you signed up for, or you will in for a rude awakening and not all are able to keep going after realizing this.

I sailed for ten years at sea. Don’t worry. It is a though job sometimes. And yes a ship can be a claustrophobic environment, but it is also very gratifying! The ship itself is a very interesting technological thing. And you get to see the world. Furthermore sometimes the other crew members are just assholes, but I also still have good friendships with comrades from back then. By far most of the other seafarers I met are a bit rude, but good people. One advice, if you ever get homesick. Keep in mind that the voyage will be over soon. It might take a few months, but eventually you will go home.
