I was a Marine Engineer during my time at sea and even all those years ago we were expected to hold a certificate one above the position filled. While steam ships were still in the fleet chief engineers were expected to hold both motor and steam certificates.

Same here. Deck cadet last 2015. Graduated 2017, went onboard as Junior 3rd officer last 2018. And now a full fledged 3rd officer finally. Now about to finish my first contract as 3/O. Lot of new experiences. Super blessed to have this opportunity being only 23yrs old. Nice vlog chief! Drone footage was awesome!

I don't know why I cried at the last part of this video. I used to go onboard Chief as a Deck Cadet. I've been on 3 contracts. Yet I decided to stop for a while to think if seafaring is really for me. After watching this video, I found my answer. Thank you Chief!! Have a wonderful career 🙂

Your right on all of that Chief. Two things I will never forget, getting my 3rd Mate rating and later my Unlimited Masters License. The bridge crews of 35 years ago were a lot different than today and frankly not as soft on the newbies. When I showed up the Captain asked who I was and I told him your new 3rd Mate. He never looked at me and told me to go measure the draft. Off I went with my pen and writing pad I did that 6 times, on the 7th time down the Chief Mate stopped me and asked point blank why the hell I was going and coming so damn much. I told him why. He started laughing so hard he bit his cigar into and told me that was his job and not mine. Furious I climbed back to the bridge to give the Captain a piece of my mind, for the first time that day he looked me in the eye and said, "Kid, it's your job to know your responsibilities, your watch starts at 0100." And that was that. Looking back I get the humor of it. You wanted to get angry and sometimes I did, but you learned from it.

    Nicely done, salamat po!
When I was a Naval officer in the 70s - 80s, we'd laugh at how ratty the merchant ships were, and how it seemed no one was on watch. Several times if we hadn't changed course we'd have collided with a merchant most likely on "autopilot," at least that's what it seemed like.
Nowadays, the merchant fleet has so many beautiful ships, such as the ones you show. And the level of professionalism appears higher than what I experienced in the military. Not a lot, but some.
Thanks for this reminder of sea life and a look inside what the merchant marine is like in modern times.

No matter how high you become in an Organisation, there was once a day when you knew nothing and everything you know today you had to learn. Good Leaders always remember that fact and allow for it.
I was once a Senior Officer in an Organisation (2nd in Command) and I judge My Performance not by what I did successfully, but by what the Officers I trained did successfully, after I had departed.

Chief, this is a fantastic VLOG . I'm sure that your job is challenging, and yet you produce this interesting, informative, and very slick TH-cam channel in your spare time!
I really admire smart, competent people who can do this kind of thing. I'm just a landlubber but the world of shipping is fascinating to me. The young man, J.R., who has advanced to Third Mate, is an inspiration.
Thanks so much for this insight into the world of big freakin' ships and the guys who make them work.

Outstanding leadership video regardless of which career you want to pursue.
When I was in the USN, we used the term "newby" or "noob" too. Those just joining the fleet fresh out of basic or A-school were referred to as "boots", short for boot camp. I never hung around officer country but I knew enough that ensigns, though we were required to salute them were the gophers (go fer this go fer that) of the officer ranks.
