It was the same year as this programme, which I remember watching. It taught me a lesson in life. If you can't do the time, dont do the crime.
A good thing too I'd say: the army must surely help develop a wide range of skills and characteristics, which would be essential for interacting with prisoners. Probably why ex-military folks make good teachers.

Aye the screws were utter scumbags them days. All ex military, no brains, narrow minded, black or white thinking. Being military all they knew to do was follow the rules no matter what, do what the ranking officer says even to the detriment, it's no way to manage hundreds of diverse cons. To them all the cons were dirt and their attitude was my way or no way, zero compromise or listening to prisoners complaints. Obviously this approach resulted in high discontent, violence and riots, with a high rate of reoffending. Luckily they are much better these days, they come from all walks of life and all have different styles and viewpoints. Having female screws made a big difference too, it's important to have a motherly/feminine presence.

£8-11k a year. Doesn't sound a lot, does it? However, my parents bought a lovely big, victorian 4 bedroom house in the early '80s for around £17k. In 2021 the average house would be 10+ times the annual salary of a prison officer. We've all be screwed by the system, not just prisoners.

Alot of prisoners are insidious, undisciplined, rebellious and aggressive. This in turn makes the staff retaliate. Aggression breeds aggression. Some of the prisoners play the ‘victim card’. They initiate aggression and blame the staff for aggravated behaviour.

These old screws were propper,, when you look at the shower of shit we have now locking up our criminals thay aint worth a penny,,ive seen for my self the new breed of screws and trust thsy would never walk a mile in these old screws shoes,,, for one theres no respect for them, thay are so easily manipulated, and you can see the fear in there eyes,, some of them are ok,, but most of em come from the new training regimes,,you need people skills to gain the trust of prisoners,the new breed are like little children in there mind set,, petty and want to make a name for there selves,, old screws from back has far had the 60s to the late nineties were good old tuff but fair,wot you saw you got from them, thay earned their respect, and thay would give you respected iff you earned it,,
Screws would earn, on avearge, in 1980, 8 grand a year. That's about 36 grand a year nowdays, in 2024. That is'nt bad is it?

@@mistofoles ABH a drunken fight in my 20's...got 4 months spent 5 weeks in strangeways then was moved to kirkham for the rest of my sentence...never been back.

Compared to Michigan, USA prisons the HMP facilities are summer camps. I bet they even get kids cartoons like CoCoMelon, Dora the Korean Chick, Doc McStuffins and SpongeBob (Expletive)Pants in their cells nowadays (we all know what SpongeBob does to Patrick and Squidward off camera).
