  • Dartmoor was my favorite prison to go to. This was a place I thrived

I was in there for 36 months. around 1981. 6 months in Exeter then Dartmoor. I remember going to a quarry and breaking big boulders into pieces. We worked in pairs and were given pneumatic drills to make holes and steel wedges that we banged into the holes to split these massive boulders. Eventually, once the rocks were of a certain size they would go into a big grinding machine. The small stones were used in making roads. This was around 1981. I also worked on the farm doing an assortment of things. I do remember the winter was cold but I made some great friends there. I was 23 at the time and it was the last prison i was ever in.

Same goes for your dad , I'd get a job , keep busy , cause of Covid lot of jail's giving extra £5 on canteen for phones . Dartmoor classed as working jail , so they like you to work. Lots to do down the moor , used to have farm . Yeah overall usual missing his family , cause it's easy nowadays ,you got a phone in yet cell now , but a letter now and again is nice , personal touch for your dad aswell . My stepfather served five years there in the early 70s. I wish I'd asked him more about it - although he wasn't generally one for reminiscing about his time inside - he did tell me about one particular screw who would say 'my cat told me' whenever anyone asked how he found out about some piece of skullduggery or the other. When someone finally 'delt' with the cat and everyone was told that they should give up the culprit, some wag said aloud, 'ask your cat!'

Regarding phones. Hopefully no one reading this will ever end up going inside, but just in case....There are now mobile phones available that are really tiny! About 4cm, by 1.5cm. No internet, but they do phone calls, text messages, and they've got a built in FM radio. Looks like a mini Nokia 3330 and they cost about 30 quid. I've just spent the last 2 weeks in a drugs rehab unit, and phones were banned except for a couple of hours in the evening, but it was easy to smuggle one of these little ones in without having to resort to the 'prison pocket'!

A couple of people I know did time in Dartmoor prison.
Because they used to send prisoners there from Cardiff prison.
And I know someone who was transferred to Dartmoor prison from parc prison in Bridgend.
I heard that you got to be serving 18 months or over to do your time in Dartmoor prison.
Getting back to when you said that you heard it's closing soon they was going to close it this year.
But it's going to remain open for the foreseeable future.
And I read a while back that David Norris is in Dartmoor prison.
The one who murdered Stephen Lawrence in London in 1993.
And David Norris got slashed in Dartmoor prison.
Well he's been attacked in prison a few times and the other bloke Gary Dobbs.
They was in belmarsh on remand then they was in Wakefield and gartree.
And they got attacked in them prisons aswell
