    The way I always understood the show was that Frank, Dennis, and Dee are sociopaths, Mac would be a good person if he weren't constantly trying to impress the wrong people (mostly Dennis), and Charlie is just too stupid to realize that his friends are abusing him for their own benefit.

    • @kellynolen498
      @kellynolen498 2 ปีที่แล้ว +12

      I don't abused people tend to find themselves in the same situation with different people my mom thrice divorced and later a mean boss that yelled at her and kept making selfish decisions
      she worked at a charity animal rescue so she was stuck there if she left it would be at the cost of animals lives
      ps her boss did shit like decide arbitrarily if mom didn't get some pregnant dog a home/place outside the shelter
      it would be fixed that day ie dog abortion
      point is at a certain point it's just random chance for someone to gain a human connection that can help you escape the cycle

      Charlie relentlessly stalks a woman, cuts the brakes on a van containing all his friends and appears to become dangerously close to killing a "leprechaun." I think we only see him as innocent by comparison to the total depravity and antisocial-ness of the others. it does seem like a lot of unresolved trauma and maybe brain damage drives his character but even if those aren't his fault, that doesn't make him an innocent bystander. I do think he's the only character who could be considered "good" in any way but it's very warped and not at all consistent.

    Has anyone heard of Sartre's "No Exit"? It's a play that the phrase "Hell is other people" stemmed from. A group of people found themselves in a miysterious room they couldn't leave. They formed relationships amongst themselves, most of them toxic. Eventually the door out of the room opens, but the people are too absorbed in their toxic relationships to leave. The twist is these people are in hell, and their punishment is eachother. That's what Always Sunny is. It's a hell loop that the characters are unwilling to or incapable of escape.

    • @deannal.newton9772
      @deannal.newton9772 ปีที่แล้ว +5

      It can also be the story of the show, The Good Place, where 4 people died and think they're in "The Good Place" but in fact they are in "The Bad Place" the entire time. The only difference is that the characters in The Good Place are actually aware of it unlike the gang from It's Always Sunny In Pennsyvania.

      @@deannal.newton9772 actually, funnily enough, Sartre's Huis Clos/No Exit was a big inspiration for The Good place! Both TGP+ IASIP are such great portrayals of "Hell is other people" but IASIP for sure has a more pessimistic take on it- but that's what makes it so much fun to watch

    The gang is in the same position as the characters in Jean-Paul Sarte's play No Exit. They make each other miserable, but they are all dependent on each other. In the case of the play they were in hell and torturing each other, but they could leave if they wanted, but they were all so determined to be petty and cruel to each other, or needed something from the others, that they couldn't bring themselves to go.

    • @arifaristiana2525

      I sometimes wonder if the gang are either consciously or subconsciously taking from No Exit, but I understand that as Americans, they can't explicitly say that without alienating the not-insignificant portion of their audience who view it as aspirational.

    I think the reunion 2 parter really shows why they're together by seeing the environment they came together in. Dennis thinks he's popular and the group let's him seem that way by comparison, Mac gets to latch onto his perception of Dennis as popular, Charlie gets a sense of normalcy with people that accept him and Dee doesn't feel lonely, despite how much better off she'd be if she tried to find anyone else. Then Frank gets to do whatever he wants, even go into a highschool reunion despite being 30 year solder than everyone.

    I always thought that Dennis is the root of all evil in the gang. He is the worst with all of them; hates his sisters, belittles his best friend Mac, snaps constantly at his father like an elitist and always thinks that Charlie is beneath him. The episode when Dennis left, the gang was starting to heal, it's just Mac's wounds where to big and they all relapsed. But yeah I believe the gang is bad because of the golden god :P

    • @tomoakley760
      @tomoakley760 3 ปีที่แล้ว +110

      Well, he's only the de facto leader because the gang is complicit in recognising him as such. Whenever one or more of the gang peel away from Dennis on a separate scheme, then their own toxic bids for power and control take precedence over everything else. Charlie straight up was gonna cut open an irishman to find "hidden treasure". Even Dennis only goes as far as the *implication* of violence, but Dee Charlie Frank and Mac all have legit histories of violence. But yes, Dennis does have the perception of control over the Gang, but ultimately its all just smoke and mirrors. Because the moment his authority is undermined (when it becomes convenient to the gang's scheming to do so), they can become totally depraved and narcissistic without even being under Dennis's spell.

    • @LoganBluth
      @LoganBluth 3 ปีที่แล้ว +66

      @@tomoakley760 "Dennis only goes as far as the implication of violence" *_that we know about._* Remember, this is a man who at all times carries around in a secret compartment in his car: Duct tape, zip ties, rope, camera, and rubber gloves, which he refers to as his "tools" and calls upon when extremely angry at being rejected by a woman. I have seen every Sunny episode at least 5 times over, and I can honestly say that I do not think Dennis hates Dee. I have seen too many instances of him actually showing he cares for her, more than the others, to think otherwise. I think the bigger thing about Mac’s coming out dance scene is that he never finds the answer from escaping the toxic friendships but from doing something that synthesizes his self serving behavior, inspired by his trauma’s, with his want for acceptance. I think this is important as often the relationship we build are a reflection of the traumas, or the recognition/misrecognition, that we’re applied to us when we finally came out of the void into consciousnesses, we can’t really recognize ourselves without the ideas of whoever raised us. This means that this term toxicity is never one sided, even in the case of things like domestic abuse(not in the law obviously, all though a discussion about social systems pushing people to act in such a way is an interesting discussion in its own right) because in some way the reason these people saw each other as worthy of love, even if it ended up one sided, was inherent in the way they already saw each other as they were recognized. In a sense the victim was taught to be subservient so what else would they be until something made it necessary for them to change. I mean domestic abuse survivors often first steps in recovery are essentially lessons in assertiveness. This reflects in Mac because he has to realize that the relationship he will build that leads to his recognition must come from synthesizing his past traumas with his new identity, in a sense he can only overcome his toxic relationship and behaviors if he is able to become self aware of his own striving for recognition. I think in Hegelian terminology this is referred to as being with oneself in the whole, growth does not come from dissecting and taking what’s seemingly useful, it comes from interacting in a way that allows one to become cognizant of why they believe the things they do. Mac will not escape his toxic relationships simply by leaving them behind just like Descartes will never escape his methodical doubt, he needs to become self aware of why they happen for him, which requires his continuing struggle with them until a synthesis is realized

      I'm firmly in the camp that "cancel culture", is NOT a thing. And that's not what this is. It's just a major corporation trying to cover it's ass in a dumb, uninformed way. Which, that's not exactly a new phenom.

    I may be alone in this, but how I’ve thought of this show lately is that instead of being the protagonists and the “good guys,” the gang is actually the antagonists or the traditional “bad guys.” The way they’re always plotting and scheming something, doing anything they can to get what they want without regard for how they might impact anyone else, making the lives of the people around them worse, how quickly they change allegiances so they can always come out on top, etc. The other random characters they interact with in Philly are merely the victims of their antics.
    And like most great complicated “villains”, they aren’t just evil for no good reason. They all have pretty fucked up pasts/parents (Charlie’s absentee father and promiscuous mother, Mac’s apathetic and unloving parents, Dennis and Dee’s father issues and a mother who’s petty and a terrible role model, Frank being a victim of his wife’s infidelity and finding out his life is a lie in raising two kids that weren’t really his).
    On one hand, you realize these characters are messed up and not someone you would ever rely on, while also understanding why they are like this and you think, well if I had the kind of parents/childhoods/relationships that they’ve had, would I have turned out any better than them?

    Slight nit-pick for the argument at the end: At the end of the episode Hero or Hate Crime? The gang all except Frank being true to his sexuality (even if it meant he did the crappy thing of being motivated by money but quickly changing his entire demeanour - from overwrought toxic masculinity and anger to calm and happy acceptance. Upon exiting the scene, Charlie, Dee, and Dennis all express happiness that he's no longer hiding his identity, though you could argue that since Mac doesn't hear it he, therefore, does not get the acceptance. This was also an entire episode discussing hate speech. I think that's why Frank's acceptance in Mac Finds his Pride (a most beautifully put together dance routine) makes it all the more powerful when you remember that the pretext for the Hero or Hate Crime plot was Frank's horrific use of the homophobic hate slur - the f-word - he goes from committing a hate crime to helping Mac and coming to a point of understanding - finding empathy. It’s not trying to rehabilitate these awful people for the harm, racism, and bigotry and all over awfulness they cause and perpetuate. Nor is it humanising them. The jokes are still at their expense. Perhaps they desire to avoid it, to shun these moments that make us human, to embrace their flaws, to find growth and change because of this toxic, narcissistic, co-dependency, that whilst there are bonding and perhaps loving moments, they fall back on each other because of their inability to grow fully as people - thus staying true to this anti-sitcom ethos.

    This also helped me understand Clerks a bit better too. I always wondered why Dante never ditched Randall once and for all and I realized this is it. Dante could just blame his own shitiness on Randall instead of making a lasting change. Randall knows he's a terrible person and revels in it so it's easy to do that. He even called this out at the end of Clerks I and to some extent Clerks II.

    I think Mac and Charlie have the potential to be good people on their own but I think the fact that the gang hangs around Dennis is what makes them continue to be bad people. As the therapy episode explains, Dennis has a profile on all the members in the group and also manipulates a of them. He depends on Dee and ik its a gross theory but I think Dennis is also somewhat attracted to Dee as he almost loses it when he thinks Dee is getting famous for her comedy and would no longer need to rely on Dennis which even though Dennis also hates the idea of her being g better than him, he literally says he's in love with her. Dennis manipulates Dee so that he can depend on her and she when in need would depend on him making Dennis feel in control. Dennis also manipulates Mac's body dysmorphia issues and the times where Mac has tried to be a genuinely good friend Dennis like buying Dennis a gift, he makes sure he switches the shirts so Mac buys him exactly what he wants, which Mac is kinda sad bc he then doesn't really get the satisfaction of doing a good thing.
    Dennis pretty much does whatever he can to make the group dependent on him either intentionally or unintentionally. There's examples of him doing many things like that to the gang that makes them into even worse people. The therapy episode and the episode where Dennis leaves just goes to show how much Dennis has a hold on the group. The writers always had in mind Dennis is a sociopath, I believe Rob or Glenn stated they do already have an ending planned out just in case the show has to end or for whatever reason they ever decide to end the show. Which everytime I watch Always Sunny, my guess would be if the show were to end I think the show would end with the group leaving Dennis and possibly the show directly revealing Dennis is also a serial killer.

  • @Delta_Aves

    The more I've watched the show, I've realized Always Sunny is pretty much the anti-Friends. Both shows are about a group of adults (two of which are siblings) and their complicated lives the big city, their relationships with their families, other people, and with each other. However, Friends is a lukewarm, friendly, colorful show that depicts some of the hardships of life, family and love, and everyone learns to overcome their flaws and become better people by the end, whereas Alway Sunny is an irreverent, crazy, and mean-spirited show that showcases the sheer ugliness of the real world and the characters' flaws and personalities only get worse as time goes on.

    Former (is he?) Mafia capo Michael Franzese often says "you are who you hang with" saying the group of friends you associate with influence the sort of person you are. However, at the same time, it doesn't seem to acknowledge that so are they. If you are who you are because of them, then they are who they are because of you. So, if you are being dragged down by your friends, then getting a "new crew" might just mean you would start dragging them down rather than being raised up.
    Maybe we all just have the friends we deserve.

      Michael Franzese used to hang out with mobsters, thieves, psychopaths and killers because that's what he himself chose to be involved in. He now associates with church congregations and self-help groups. Change comes from within and we are capable of choosing who influences us. I used to do every drug I could get my hands on until something happened to me to change my perspective for the better. Now the people I choose to spend my time with support me instead of drag me down with them.

    Ultimately the crippling flaw that brings these people back together into their misery is that they are fundamentally not complete people with self-contained identities. So long as they are with each other, they are stuck in a crab-pot of incompletion. Any one of them with the audacity to try and change is seen as a threat by the others - if they can change and become more complete, it reminds them they are not. Every one of them is dragging each other down constantly. But the moment each of them step outside of this group, they see the gap between self-completion and their current state, and flee back to the crab-pot. They will never get better in there, and will only widen the gap between their complete selves and their shells - but at least in the crap-pot you only have other terrible people to compare yourself to.
