First things first "Wildcard, b*tches!" I didn’t like season 16 I only could watch the first 4 so far. Every episode just seemed forced like the writers were out of ideas and just didn’t care. I will still end up watching all of them here soon just because the show always meant a lot to me.
I genuinely believe them rewatching the earlier seasons for the podcast whilst writing this season has had a huge effect on how they have written the show.

The premises are still very much Always Sunny brand, but the way their characters act and interact aren't quite the same. Kaitlin is very much playing "the girl" of the group and not the Dee we know today.
Lmao right there with you. One of the most memorable scenes this season for me Danny breaking into the closet and room is some of the hardest I've laughed. His reaction is absoultely hilarious. "Charlie what the fuck.. "we're pissing in cans Charlie.." 😂

Man I actually found the last episode w/ Dennis to be the best episode in years. The reveal of all the characters in the doctor's office at the end had me absolutely rolling.
Same, it was just so relatable. I agree the jokes were predictable but it's a rare case where that makes them even funnier because Dennis was pretty much always thinking exactly what I'd be thinking in that situation.
The last episode definitely seemed directly inspired by a story Glenn told on one of the podcast episodes, where he had a car get stuck in a parking garage. I think my enjoyment of that original story, plus the fact that I identified a little too much with his over the top rage over things like not being able to get ahold of a human on the phone, made me enjoy the episode despite of some of its problems. I just love Dennis as a character too much to not love an episode that is mostly about him.
Dennis takes a mental health day was definitely my favourite episode of the season, it was all about the suspense and slow build up of tension, you spend the entire episode waiting for Dennis to snap and kill somebody, you know he is a psycho, you see him getting more unhinged with each scene, you are just waiting for the series to confirm this guy is actually a serial killer and that is where the enjoyment came from. It was a mix of comedy and thriller that I have never seen before, really cool stuff that could only work in sunny with Dennis and this building mythos of him being a serial killer over so many seasons. After the conclusion it had me feeling like the character Dennis was living a day in Glenn Howerton's life kinda like a weird matrix thing, I actually think Dennis is the golden god of the Sunny universe now
It being a 2 room apartment with a bathroom while they have been pissing in cans & sharing a fold out couch bed... was a gag 17 years in the making of always having those doors there but nothing being done with them.
@@Caelinus I pray for an episode similar to the frank episode but with the mcpoyles, and their scheme intertwines with the gang but the gang is in the background through the episode and we just see the mcpoyles in their own in the wild drinking warm milk.
The last two eps are the only ones I didn't love, but the majority of the season is hilarious. 13 and 14 are the weakest ones in my opinion, not for lack of trying and there was some fun stuff and some good episodes, just felt like they wanted to change things up unnecessarily when frankly no one was bored with the show's usual format. The Gang Escapes, Time's Up for the Gang, and The Gang Gets New Wheels were all instant classics for me though.
The characters were also less one-dimensional. They’d been writing the gang as a caricature of themselves for several seasons. Bringing back a lot of supporting characters gave them room to breathe and bounce their insane energies off of. Best season in years!
For me the episode that crystallized into art was Dennis's attempted day off. The whole episode I just kept looking over at my wife and saying "Am I crazy for kinda being on Dennis's side here?" so when at the end it suddenly leaps into the surreal with him plunging his hand into the CEO's chest and consuming the ruby he pulls out of it I started laughing so hard I began sobbing uncontrollably for almost an hour. It was simultaneously so cathartic and such a wonderful punchline to a shaggy dog story that I don't know if they can top it.
He pulls out a diamond! Like how the gang called him trying to turn the coal into diamonds by using pressure cooker. He reached in and pulled out the heart of the man who caused him all sorts of stress and turns his heart into diamond using the metaphorical pressure he was under, as well as his literal high blood pressure.
I also like how at the end you realize the whole time he's trying to find the source of his anger that's why he doesn't lose his mind at the retail workers for the most part and says "it's not you it's the system" and in reality he's searching for an embodiment of the system to use to get his anger out and lower his blood pressure to prove he is the Golden God

Podcast has made me appreciate Charlie as a creative much more because judging by conversations they’ve had on the podcast I think you can see he’s had a firmer hand on this season than usual.
Funny how ppl either strongly dislike or love Dennis takes a Mental Health Day. I really liked it, after Frank vs Russia it was my second favourite episode this season. I agree that S16 was solid, however I also think there were some good episodes in the last couple seasons. The fandom is quite harsh on the show not being the same it was 15!! years ago but I’m just glad they kept it going for so long. But tbh, I kinda wish they would wrap it up next season. Not bc I don’t enjoy Sunny anymore, but I want the whole cast to be there for the finale. I feel kinda bad writing this, but Danny is quite old and while he is thankfully still fit and healthy, we don’t know what the future holds, especially if they’re gonna start producing the next season in like two years or so. It would be nice to have one more season, maybe like 12 episodes long, with recurring characters like Pondy, Artemis and the lawyer….. and then it just sort of ends.
the show has actualy been renewed up to season 18, which i honestly think is MORE than enough i really dont want the last season to be lukewarm and underwhelming, tbh s16 wasnt my favourite, but im so glad it was miles better than s15

Agreed. Like I guess the focuses of the jokes were kind of "broad' in that they weren't endemic to Sunny itself, but I don't think it would have worked anywhere near as well with different characters, so it still counts as Sunny-style comedy imo. 😊
They’ve been doing so many experimental episodes the past few seasons, and for as fun as many of those film pastiches and homages were this season felt like a return to form and felt like a breath of fresh air as a result
I dont think I've seen a show go so long and maintain such a consistent quality. Shows that go this long always have a dark ages period but I don't think It's Always Sunny has had a wholly bad season.
Absolutely! Considering they started in Season 3 when the show really took off and then left after Season 12, which imo is when the writing started going downhill. They were clearly a significant key to the magic of the show in its peak and having them back is proving that. Hope they stay on for future seasons!

I kinda liked clean shaven Mac, I always thought after Rob buffed up it was silly to see this big buff bearded dumb guy get bullied around, but now that he’s clean shaven this last season it brought back that dopey silly look that Mac was missing and offset how ripped he is now

Imagine if the final season of It’s Always Sunny had the gang unwittingly change for the better along with unintentionally fixing all the lives they ruined, culminating in them being confused at being thanked in the finale.
Listening to the podcast might've had the opposite effect on me. Dennis' day off would've been great if I hadn't already heard Glenn tell this exact story on the pod. I've also noticed their over reliance on the "move past it!" line. They also mention loving in it on the pod but because of that i'm hyper aware of how often they use it in this season alone. Still a fun
The scene of Frank winning the chess match while the device goes into full throttle with the triumphant music playing in the background is amazing, probably my favourite moment of the season
I was pleasantly surprised with this season. The Chuckie Cheese episode, the Bowling episode were definitely my favorites. I love the McPoyle bros and can't get enough of them. They've been missing for too long. It's good to see the supporting characters back again this season. I agree the season was WAY too short. But I'm grateful for what we got.
My group of friends and I thought the two-episode premiere was kind of middling/forgettable, so imagine our surprise when pretty much every episode after those two hit. Kinda feels like they were out to prove themselves after that Disney cash infusion. We've been a little tepid with the "new" Sunny so we're thrilled to see them back in their groove!
I cant believe the show is almost going on 20 years. Im a few months older than the first season and I cant believe a sitcom from that long ago is still running. Hope it makes it to season 20
The last episode was my favorite. The social satire was on point, a little bit of group crazies sprinkled in, and the ending was divine. Frankly, much like the cruise episodes to end season 11, this felt like a good series finale.
Dennis creating a entire scenario where his day just goes completely wrong and ends with him ripping a man's heart out to deal with stress during a dentist appointment was a solid episode. It was such a peak Sunny joke, it was like hyperbole of the old Always Sunny gags, taking it to 200% and still making funny jabs at today's society. I also think the bowling episode was Dennis at his best, shattering his entire hand on a Test Your Strength machine and holding in that pure anguish because it makes him look like less of a man was another great one
I thought the Risk E. Rat's episode was perfect IASIP. I had a hard time getting into the show and finding it funny, but I think that one perfectly encapsulates the characters and the show's tone in a way I wish I would have been able to see earlier on in the show. It's one I'd feel most confident in showing to someone else to give an idea of what the show is in a way that isn't too jarring as I felt the first couple of seasons could be.
@@Faron837 Strong claim. I can think of many bad ones, and many more forgettable ones. Too many episodes have relied on shock humour for me and as I've watched so much edgy comedy, it's hard to shock me, making the humour fall flat (to be fair, I started watching last year so I'm judging decade old episodes off of modern retrospective). This season felt a lot more balanced in that regard.
@@mroctober3583 Depends on the particular episode, but there are many that are to me personally, yes. I was also only talking about this particular season as I think it was mostly highs. Some of the more recent seasons prior to this one have been very hit and miss also.
My least favourite episode this season was the Malcolm/Breaking Bad one. It just didn't land for me. And Tsuma (the name of their in-universe Tesla) is Japanese for wife.... not sure if that has any other meaning but found that interesting
Loved a lot of recent Sunny, that Ireland finale had me bawling, but the criticisms are fair. The podcast has done immeasurable good for the quality of the writing lately, and it's no longer in the trap that South Park has fallen into of having to be a "social commentary" show instead of a show about real people.
I loved this video even if I personally think Dennis Takes A Mental Health Day is one of my new favorite Sunny episodes overall. Complete agree that this season was full of nonstop hits even if some weren't quite as phenomenal. Felt like a return to classic Sunny in the best way
Also, talking about the Sunny podcast, I remember when they went over "Charlie has cancer" and talked about his sister's being there, the guys said that they had honestly forgot that Charlie had sisters. Then in 16 when they go to his sister's house, Mac says that he forgot that Charlie even had sisters. I would really not be surprised if that joke was inspired in part thanks to them rewatching the show due to the podcast.
I honestly think the only bad overall seasons are s13 and s15, but even those have some gems. The fact they've manage to keep this show going for so long and still manage to get a laugh out of me is impressive in its own right.
The scene in the final episode when Dennis got a new phone was so perfect. I work for Vodafone and the amount of times customers get better deals if they're new rather than existing loyal customers is insane. Dennis' anger was so justified it was hilarious

Very interesting that we had virtually the same views on the season as a whole but our views on which episodes were the best and weakest of the season were almost all opposites
I wasn't really feeling this season until the back end episodes. The bowling one and malcolm in the middle one were great. And the finale with Dennis was spot on.
Dennis Takes a Mental Health Day was my favorite episode of the season by far. The writing was incredible- the reveal at the end was so goddamn cool. I loved the beauty of the cinematography and simple special effects at the end with Dennis and the TSUMA guy on the beach. But most of all, Glenn’s performance was fucking outstanding. I so badly need to learn the monologue he gives when talking to Daisy on the phone. I’ve said so many times before, when people give Glenn the opportunity to go full Juilliard, the results are absolutely insane. Also, I absolutely loved the fact that the episode was inspired by Glenn’s own story about his stranded Tesla. It really felt like a gift to the hardcore fans who have watched the podcast and can recognize the storyline and be like, “Hey! They did the thing!”
Im old as dirt, and i remember Sunny being on TV but i never really gave it much of a chance. Well this summer i have, and wow it so refreshing how non-PC the show is, they are all terrible people and its hilarious. Just finished Season 2, working my way up there.
Episode 8 was a Glenn episode 100%. Just like the whole last season was Charlie Day's idea (btw the others werent keen on, and i agree). It was about his experience with his Tesla getting stuck in a garage and his boba hatred. Unhinged Dennis is fun imo.
You didn't cover The Gang Gets Cursed! Probably my favorite episode of the entire season. Just stellar writing all around and a great performance from David Hornsby as Cricket. Still, great video, I loved this season too. Cheers!
Dennis takes a Metal health day was probably my favourite episode of always sunny. Instant classic with one of Glenn Howerton's greatest performances, as well as some lovely rips on modern day life.
This season was indeed fantastic, and entirely too short. Really starting to feel like tv seasons are getting shorter every year. Still blows my mind how high the quality is 16 seasons in. No other show brings me to the brink of struggling to breathe from laughing so hard. Really all of FX as a TV brand is still going strong. Rez Dogs, WWDItS, The Old Man, the new Justified, even stuff like Class of 09 which wasn't a favorite was still pretty interesting and entertaining. Maybe it's my bias against HBO's rapid zazlav plummet to shit, but feels like FX is one of the "old" standards I can still rely on.
I like to watch them the first time when they come out, then come back later after the rest of the series and revisit them, makes them feel like classics
100% agree with everything you said except for the last ep. The Dennis Mental day ep is one of my favorites of any IASIP eps and I've seen them all. Almost felt like a Curb ep which is one of my all time favorite shows as well.
It was an improvement over 15, but thats about as far I would go. It frequently felt like they’d forgotten how to write jokes, and the whole thing felt overproduced more like a standard sitcom (with some fucking awful camera work - looking at you bowling episode)

Agreed. Like I guess the focuses of the jokes were kind of "broad' in that they weren't endemic to Sunny itself, but I don't think it would have worked anywhere near as well with different characters, so it still counts as Sunny-style comedy imo. 😊
They’ve been doing so many experimental episodes the past few seasons, and for as fun as many of those film pastiches and homages were this season felt like a return to form and felt like a breath of fresh air as a result

I dont think I've seen a show go so long and maintain such a consistent quality. Shows that go this long always have a dark ages period but I don't think It's Always Sunny has had a wholly bad season.

I think having writers Marter and Rosel back this season probably played a big roll in it feeling like older seasons
Absolutely! Considering they started in Season 3 when the show really took off and then left after Season 12, which imo is when the writing started going downhill. They were clearly a significant key to the magic of the show in its peak and having them back is proving that. Hope they stay on for future seasons!
Rosell came back in s15 (as well as Glenn returning to full time writing) which explains why that season was a step in the right direction.

Dennis takes a mental health day was honestly my favorite episode just because of the way Dennis reacts to everything. Was definitely laughing the most at that episode.
My only two complaints with season 16:
1. I agree, the season is too short
And 2. Mac needs to get his beard back. Seeing Rob’s chin upsets me
that's because with a beard he is Mac, without the beard he is Rob
Rob looks much more handsome with facial hair. It always bugs me when Mac is clean shaven.
They all look like they've had plastic surgery and the camera quality is too good. Also the show just got shit in general.
I kinda liked clean shaven Mac, I always thought after Rob buffed up it was silly to see this big buff bearded dumb guy get bullied around, but now that he’s clean shaven this last season it brought back that dopey silly look that Mac was missing and offset how ripped he is now
I did struggle with the Bryan Cranston episode as I've never really been a fan of shoehorning in celebritied playing themselves.

Megan has been a blessing to the podcast and writer/director for the show. She is such an underrated gem that elevates the gang.
I was surprised when they did acknowledge Charlie's sisters again after all this time. That's some early seasons deep lore. The Frank vs Russia was definitely the highlight of this season.

Imagine if the final season of It’s Always Sunny had the gang unwittingly change for the better along with unintentionally fixing all the lives they ruined, culminating in them being confused at being thanked in the finale.

Listening to the podcast might've had the opposite effect on me. Dennis' day off would've been great if I hadn't already heard Glenn tell this exact story on the pod. I've also noticed their over reliance on the "move past it!" line. They also mention loving in it on the pod but because of that i'm hyper aware of how often they use it in this season alone. Still a fun
The bowling ball episode was GOLD. Dennis throwing the punch then revealing to mac that hes broken every single bone in his hand was hilarious 😂
The scene of Frank winning the chess match while the device goes into full throttle with the triumphant music playing in the background is amazing, probably my favourite moment of the season

I was pleasantly surprised with this season. The Chuckie Cheese episode, the Bowling episode were definitely my favorites. I love the McPoyle bros and can't get enough of them. They've been missing for too long. It's good to see the supporting characters back again this season. I agree the season was WAY too short. But I'm grateful for what we got.
Don't understand how blowing up a kids venue is funny at all and I love dark humour. The show sucks now.
My group of friends and I thought the two-episode premiere was kind of middling/forgettable, so imagine our surprise when pretty much every episode after those two hit. Kinda feels like they were out to prove themselves after that Disney cash infusion. We've been a little tepid with the "new" Sunny so we're thrilled to see them back in their groove!
I cant believe the show is almost going on 20 years. Im a few months older than the first season and I cant believe a sitcom from that long ago is still running. Hope it makes it to season 20
The last episode was my favorite. The social satire was on point, a little bit of group crazies sprinkled in, and the ending was divine. Frankly, much like the cruise episodes to end season 11, this felt like a good series finale.

They made the same joke for 30 minutes. It was maybe entertaining for an average American citizen.

Dennis creating a entire scenario where his day just goes completely wrong and ends with him ripping a man's heart out to deal with stress during a dentist appointment was a solid episode. It was such a peak Sunny joke, it was like hyperbole of the old Always Sunny gags, taking it to 200% and still making funny jabs at today's society. I also think the bowling episode was Dennis at his best, shattering his entire hand on a Test Your Strength machine and holding in that pure anguish because it makes him look like less of a man was another great one
I thought the Risk E. Rat's episode was perfect IASIP. I had a hard time getting into the show and finding it funny, but I think that one perfectly encapsulates the characters and the show's tone in a way I wish I would have been able to see earlier on in the show. It's one I'd feel most confident in showing to someone else to give an idea of what the show is in a way that isn't too jarring as I felt the first couple of seasons could be.
Risk e rats is one of the worst episodes of the show for me. Just wasn’t very funny at all. Rest of the season was pretty good overall
@@Faron837 Strong claim. I can think of many bad ones, and many more forgettable ones. Too many episodes have relied on shock humour for me and as I've watched so much edgy comedy, it's hard to shock me, making the humour fall flat (to be fair, I started watching last year so I'm judging decade old episodes off of modern retrospective). This season felt a lot more balanced in that regard.

My least favourite episode this season was the Malcolm/Breaking Bad one. It just didn't land for me.

Loved a lot of recent Sunny, that Ireland finale had me bawling, but the criticisms are fair. The podcast has done immeasurable good for the quality of the writing lately, and it's no longer in the trap that South Park has fallen into of having to be a "social commentary" show instead of a show about real people.
I loved this video even if I personally think Dennis Takes A Mental Health Day is one of my new favorite Sunny episodes overall. Complete agree that this season was full of nonstop hits even if some weren't quite as phenomenal. Felt like a return to classic Sunny in the best way
Also, talking about the Sunny podcast, I remember when they went over "Charlie has cancer" and talked about his sister's being there, the guys said that they had honestly forgot that Charlie had sisters. Then in 16 when they go to his sister's house, Mac says that he forgot that Charlie even had sisters. I would really not be surprised if that joke was inspired in part thanks to them rewatching the show due to the podcast.
I honestly think the only bad overall seasons are s13 and s15, but even those have some gems. The fact they've manage to keep this show going for so long and still manage to get a laugh out of me is impressive in its own right.
As someone who hasn't listened to the podcast, I loved the final episode. Also, my new favourite quote is "I summon the very fact that I am a man!"

The scene in the final episode when Dennis got a new phone was so perfect. I work for Vodafone and the amount of times customers get better deals if they're new rather than existing loyal customers is insane. Dennis' anger was so justified it was hilarious

I wasn't really feeling this season until the back end episodes. The bowling one and malcolm in the middle one were great. And the finale with Dennis was spot on.

Dennis Takes a Mental Health Day was my favorite episode of the season by far. The writing was incredible- the reveal at the end was so goddamn cool. I loved the beauty of the cinematography and simple special effects at the end with Dennis and the TSUMA guy on the beach. But most of all, Glenn’s performance was fucking outstanding. I so badly need to learn the monologue he gives when talking to Daisy on the phone. I’ve said so many times before, when people give Glenn the opportunity to go full Juilliard, the results are absolutely insane.
Also, I absolutely loved the fact that the episode was inspired by Glenn’s own story about his stranded Tesla. It really felt like a gift to the hardcore fans who have watched the podcast and can recognize the storyline and be like, “Hey! They did the thing!”
Im old as dirt, and i remember Sunny being on TV but i never really gave it much of a chance. Well this summer i have, and wow it so refreshing how non-PC the show is, they are all terrible people and its hilarious. Just finished Season 2, working my way up there.
S3, 4 and 5 are amazing
rob mcelhenney gets woke after season 11 and the show starts dropping off hard. He gets rich and starts hanging out with Hollywood celebrities.
seasons 6-11 are absolute peak, especially seasons 7 and 9
Episode 8 was a Glenn episode 100%. Just like the whole last season was Charlie Day's idea (btw the others werent keen on, and i agree). It was about his experience with his Tesla getting stuck in a garage and his boba hatred. Unhinged Dennis is fun imo.

This season was indeed fantastic, and entirely too short. Really starting to feel like tv seasons are getting shorter every year. Still blows my mind how high the quality is 16 seasons in. No other show brings me to the brink of struggling to breathe from laughing so hard.
Really all of FX as a TV brand is still going strong. Rez Dogs, WWDItS, The Old Man, the new Justified, even stuff like Class of 09 which wasn't a favorite was still pretty interesting and entertaining. Maybe it's my bias against HBO's rapid zazlav plummet to shit, but feels like FX is one of the "old" standards I can still rely on.

100% agree with everything you said except for the last ep. The Dennis Mental day ep is one of my favorites of any IASIP eps and I've seen them all. Almost felt like a Curb ep which is one of my all time favorite shows as well.
It was an improvement over 15, but thats about as far I would go. It frequently felt like they’d forgotten how to write jokes, and the whole thing felt overproduced more like a standard sitcom (with some fucking awful camera work - looking at you bowling episode)
The overproduction making a standard sitcom thing I can 100% agree with. Charlie’s apartment and the bar look so blankly clean that it makes me uncomfortable. Aren’t they all supposed to be living in squalor?
