  • After being gone for 5 years, I finally returned to my hometown of Royal Oak, MI! I grew up here, but haven't lived in Royal Oak since 1999. I've been living in Europe now and working as a mathematician for 7 years and have been able to get to Texas on work trips. But, I haven't been home in five years or seen my father in just as long. I'm not trying to edit this video tightly, but just wanted to show everyone exactly where I grew up and give a few stories about what it was like here. It's not some exotic Soviet market or anything like that, but it's where I'm from. And after being away for so long, a lot of stuff seems much more exotic than it used to...

    Thank you for sharing! I went to Lockman from 1970-1977. Been in California for 42 years. Royal Oak was a fantastic place to grow up!

      I'm glad you appreciate it! I guess it was merged with Keller Junior High and then later torn down or something? I think there aren't as many kids around as there used to be, so it's a totally different place now. When were you last in town? Also, love the cat in your profile pic!

    My cousins went to Bishop Foley. Small world. My family originated from Poland with great grandparents. Not sure how I landed on your channel, but I think I will subscribe.

      I'm glad you appreciated it, Jeffrey! I'm shocked even how much it has changed since I lived there. I still expect to hear the same music on the same radio stations and stuff like this. Do you think you will be in the area again sometime? I hadn't been around in 5 years and it was really worth seeing the place again.

    Thank you so much for sharing! I live right by Lockman Park. Yes, there was a substation fire that caused us to lose power for days and eventually were on generators for a month. Craziness!

      Small world! Yeah, that's pretty crazy. I'm always hearing from my parents that the power is out again 😭.

    My hometown, too. Gardenia & I-75 since I was six, right on the boarder with Madison Heights. Is that Lockman Park at 6:40? I went to Lockman YEARS ago. They tore it down about 20 years ago when they enhanced Keller. Born in '86. My Family home is an eight minute walk from there, maybe less. I bet we know each other or you've at least heard of me. Seems like more people know me or of me than I know people.

      It IS Lockman Park! And it's possible we know each other or have a mutual friend. I was born in '81, so I guess I started at Lockman in 87? I only was there for a few years and then went to Saint Vincent Ferrer in Madison Heights and Bishop Foley for high school. So, we might have just missed each other by a year?

    Your right it's not family oriented anymore. The night life is loud and fulfilling people, walking around the downtown area looks like a lot of homeless people. Some of the houses the lawns are weedy house to close but it's a old city.

      Uh, what are you talking about, all the homeless? You sound like a country troll trying to make up something about a place you don't know because it's a city in the north. It became less family oriented in the 90's because in that decade, it started to be the case that more or less only high income people could move into Royal Oak, so there were fewer young families. This trend continues.

      @@burtlewand5915 al lot of those people that go there to the bars and restaurants don't even live there. I had an aunt who lived there in the 70's it was not that great. It started to get a little more popular In the 80's for shopping.

    • @burtlewand5915

      @@bobs1356 I didn't even talk about downtown or who goes there. My point is that there are fewer child rearing families here, so consequently the feel of the city changed. Anyone who is still in SE Michigan knows Royal Oak is basically the center of nightlife for Metro Detroit. It is noteworthy though that the schools are good, just used less.

    I miss the old Royal Oak vibe. The R.O. sadly went from cool to Trendy and Uptight since 2010. The homeless people get harrassed in downtown main, the Resturants gotten ridiculous with their prices and dress code requirements. It's not poor friendly. RO used to be my favorite area to hang out before it went Snooty like Birmingham

    • @billsaftermath5477
      @billsaftermath5477  ปีที่แล้ว

      Yeah, that's what I heard. I don't remember some things as clearly from when I was a kid in the 80s (other than riding around on my bike with other kids). But, I guess the downtown was more represented by things like Noir Leather and wasn't more Birmingham like?

    • @bobs1356
      @bobs1356 ปีที่แล้ว

      Those snooty people are fakes that live in an apartment with 2 other roommates. Most of them don't even have job they live on government assistance.

      Shirley here. I hung out in some of the night spots about 10 yrs ago. The guys acted like they had money and most of them didn't have 2 nickels to rub together.

    i lived on Connecticut. went to Lockman in 60's. My years at Lockman were hit and miss. Worst was 6th grade teacher. his 1st year teaching and he really wanted to be popular. I was the best athlete in the class and he was always trying to get the best of me to impress the 12 yr old girls. Pretty pathetic.

      My experience was totally different, but was quite bad as well. Ended up leaving in 5th grade and was much happier. Did you go to Keller?

    • @autumn1231

      @@billsaftermath5477 yes I went to Keller. I'm sure you're learning so much living in Europe. I spent many years in Brazil and did all my "growing up" there. Enjoy your experiences.
