- This week @DesignerHomeTours we spend a perfect autumn day with Workshop APD principal Matt Berman at his historic Brownstone in Brooklyn, New York. Matt discusses the seven-year renovation process he and his husband embarked on with their then-infant son. The perfect blend of historic craftsmanship with modern updates, this episode is a great example of interior design ideas and how to blend design periods and different color schemes. The architect discusses when to replace versus trying to find originals to update elements of a historic home. He shares tiled bathroom ideas and kitchen design ideas and also addresses a common question “what should I put on my open shelving units?” This home is full of vintage furniture (including mid-century modern designs) and a bold art collection that gives everyone ideas of how to decorate with art. Anyone looking for renovation ideas or preservation ideas will walk away with inspiration for their next home design project.

I love the architecture of these brownstones and I am glad he kept most of the original elements. The paint choices, especially in the front of the houses were.....interesting. But othet than that thanks for showing your home!!

Such a beautiful home with great style and pieces. Yet it feels homely and inviting not sterile. I feel people live and love in this home and its not all uptight at all. I would be very happy if this was my own home

As soon as you walked into the house, I could tell that there wasn’t a women living there, but you kept saying “we”, so I had to keep to watching because at that point I was trying to think of what type of women would design that way. Makes sense that you share the home with your husband. Lovely space.

I usually hate seeing wood molding being painted but I get it. The finish was just too dark and it looks very light and fresh now. All in all this home is just my thing. So perfect.
Hi Sophia, the woodwork is actually not painted. It’s a light grey-wash stain that allows the wood grain to show through.

Hi Zara, it’s not painted. It was stripped and stained. The wood grain still shows through.
Brownstones have always been my favs of NYC and this is a beautifully designed one. That said, I think they could have done just a bit better striking balance between modern & historic charm instead of so heavy on the modern, but it's stunning. Also, the front landscape and curb appeal is underwhelming compared to interior.
Please tell me where to find the plaid chair and ottoman in the living room.

your home is beautiful and your presentation is wonderful as well... I would have loved to see at least pictures of your husband and son.. since they are a big part of the beauty of this home.

Is there such thing as too perfect?! For me, this is beautiful but too controlled. I like interiors that feel more spontaneous, with some quirks and a sense of history that reflects the owners' personalities - not just beautiful things arranged in a very beautiful way.

There are a lot of great things in this house, but for me, its all about the urinal in the shower. Aren't the most ingenious ideas the most obvious. I'm about to hook that up. Yes, it will be a gratuitous expense. But now that I've seen it, I can not live the rest of my life without it.

Seems like no one is able to do classic interiors anymore. The furnishings look like thrift store backed up and unloaded in the interior. The grand style of the late Victorian/early Edwardina era is obliterated by boring Architectural digest modernist interiors, waiting for the day when people create inteiors deserving of these grand homes style. So far the Loeb House may be the only one, I wish peopel would get the memo on what style really is.
Not impressed. I do not like modernized historic homes. There are tons of options for incorporating modern art and furnishings. The historic exterior should blend with the interior. Find or build real estate that fits your design style.
