Suzuki Jimny Sierra Off-road Quick Review

  • The Suzuki Jimny Sierra is the most affordable serious off-roader you can buy. Let’s just put this out there - this isn’t a car that we’d want to drive on a day-to-day basis… unless our commute consisted of a rugged track littered with rocks, boulders and all other sorts of slippery crud.
    In essence, it’s a little four-cylinder truck with a proper 4WD system, including low-range, and during our off-road test near Lithgow, NSW, the Jimny felt right at home.
    Part of its excellent off-road ability comes down to its very short wheelbase and its 34 degree approach and 46 degree departure angles. That means you can descend and ascend tracks that would see other larger trucksters searching for an alternative.
    This is a car with a specialist pedigree, and if you need a budget off-road vehicle you should check it out because there’s daylight between it and the next most-affordable off-roader on the market.

    well I've owned one for the past seven year's and it's been ultra reliable and extremely cheap to run doing about 38mpg, and it's only had one set of budget tyres that drastically improved the ride quality and only one set of front brake pads an oil change and four new spark plugs in that time, and if you live in a wet climate like me here in Britain get the chassis and bodywork wax oiled then it will never go rusty and last forever. that's what I did !

      +b57ecv wtf did you just say one oil change in 7 years

    • @b57ecv
      @b57ecv 8 ปีที่แล้ว

      When I bought it, it had just had a full service oil filter and everything else, so at about three and a half years in (fifteen thousand miles) I gave it a full service myself and that lasted to the time I passed it onto my son seven year's from my purchase date, he changed the oil filter spark plugs brake pads and brake shoe's, and it's still running Beutiful, the oil I use and he used the same was castrol 15w40 and the engine doesn't burn a drop, there a brilliant little 4+4.

      b57ecv i still find it amazing you waited 7 years to change the oil of your car when its something you do at least once a year and every 20000km's at most. I personally change the oil every 10000km's for naturally aspirated engines or 5000km's for turbo charged engines they dont cost more than 100 dollars so what's the point of putting it off. Are you saying you didnt drive it much hence why you never changed it ?

    • @b57ecv
      @b57ecv 8 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Whyunounderstand I did a total of thirty thousand miles. One oil change in the middle at fifteen thousand miles, so basically it got changed every fifteen thousand miles.

    I respectfully disagree with "this isn’t a car that we’d want to drive on a day-to-day basis" drive this to work everday and partying at night got some A/T tyers on it ladies dig the jimny.

      Yeah I bought the Jimny as a daily driver I can take to the beach or down 4x4 tracks on the weekends. Brilliant little car around town. I kept the stock tyres as they do fine for 4x4 tracks and sand while handling great on the street. I find it a bloody comfortable ride on the road. Don't know why some people feel it's a let down in this department.

      The old Sierra yes, twin cam Jimny, no. As good as a Corolla or Yaris, no, but pretty good if there's no huge hills.

      I test drove one today and included a bit of 'around town' driving - loved it! This model is short and super easy to park in a crowded parking lot too.

    The Maruti Jypsy is based on the Jimney, which is sold in India. These are used by the Indian Army and they are made like guns. They are used in the treacherous Himalayas where the temperature are below freezing point and in Rajasthan where the temperature goes upto 50 Degree Centigrade. They are damn reliable and very light.
    This is one of the best off roaders out there. It is affordable too!

    Why on off road test does no one ever mention solid front axle or IFS? Pretty much one of the most important comparison points of a 4WD and one of the main reasons the Jimny is such a little weapon. Live front axle is a very rare thing these days. One of the last remaining real 4WD's. Put some muddies and a bit of lift on a Sierra and you got one of the most capable off road vehicles hands down.

    I enjoy driving mine on a day to day basis... although I must say that it's not keeping up with the morning rush uphill on the expressway and only very polite backseat passengers don't moan. Tiny, easy to park and with some accessories I've got a little beast that makes the boys turn their heads when passing. I can even sleep in it!

    Why would you want to do a quick review of this car when it is obviously the best by far in it's segment at doing what it is supposed to do. Oh, I get it. You can't throw it round corners and have 'fun' with it.

    Like all small Suzuki 4x4, great off road.
    However, it's the most evil thing I've ever driven on a paved road.
    Try a wet road for real thrills - frights. The short wheelbase and kneel under front end make for some scary non handling moments.

    • @dune7824
      @dune7824 7 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      A driving school can take care of these issues you're having with non-handling moments. I've never had an issue keeping up with traffic or wet roads in the Jimny

    When i said that i am going to have a Jimny, one said are you selfish? meaning that I do not like others riding my vehicle because of the limited passenger a jimny or any of its kind can accommodate. So i can not therefore have some relatives riding with me when I go attending activity in another province where the relatives will also attend. They may ask for a lift but I can not have them due to limited space; and i can not say to them to buy their own vehicle, when they are asking to be accommodated. When mulling to have a Jimney, I consider what i saw is the perennial problem of looking for a a space enough for other vehicles which are bulky. The Mitsu Adventure and the toyo revo have a slim/trim sides but still longer. the Jimny has a slim sides and short, so 3m by 3m or 3m by 2m space, along side other vehicles, is enough to park it. I have me and my wife, both small guys and my girl for the back seat; and I do not drive fast- 60 to 80 kmph only even on express way. I think this is good consideration for the Jimney.

    Hear these cars are super reliable and good at what they do... but didn't these vehicles used to have a bad rap when it comes to stability and rolling over at one point?

    • @tomauer28
      @tomauer28 7 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Yes, and Suzuki took them to the courts and won in the end - but the image damage was done.. for the USA alone that is lol

    • @tristanloveday5240
      @tristanloveday5240 6 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      The lack of stability usually comes down to people putting ridiculous suspension and body lifts on them, vastly raising the center of gravity. They don't need a huge amount of lift or flex to be capable since the majority of the time driving one you straddle ruts and unless you're running 33's, you'd diff out in ruts created by the bigger 4x4's.

      Cheap 4x4, bought by rich parents for idiot kids, great combo. Owned Zooks for 35 years, never looked like rolling one.
