  • The current Suzuki Jimny has been with us for almost 20 years, but is it still worth buying? I tested it this week to find out.

    people like the jimny because its a real 4x4, with reduction gears, and SOLID FRONT AXLE, give it a lift and some mud tyres and you will go everywhere! head to head with bigger 4x4 like a defender, if you want a city fake 4wd get a tucson or a rav4, the jimny has been for 20 years on the market because it works great for what it has been made for, simple and reliable, the jimny its one of the few real 4x4 survivors

    Jimmy is a cracking car , still going since 1998 , lets see a Dacia duster last that long , there owners are all ready complaining about rust , the jimmy was built to be basic and rugged

    Its far easier to get in the back if you get in the passenger side. Suzuki didn't design the drivers side as the entry point to the rear seats. The passenger seat has a lever that tips and slides the seat in one action, and a foot pedal release for passengers once they are in the back. The drivers seat is meant to put into your driving position and left. This makes sense as the passenger seat will always be kerb side, thus safer for rear seat passengers to enter and exit...

    Its a fair review for the subjects covered. Most owners are happy that they own one of the most reliable cars ever made with very cheap overall running costs. Extremely robust and trustworthy. Easy to fix or upgrade yourself or if not the Suzuki dealerships are very good in comparison to others. Owners don't want an SUV, haven't got more than two people to go in the car, don't need built in extras and don't care what everyone else thinks is the best new car. They enjoy its character, adaptability and the fun it is to drive on and off road. Ironically, yes it's mostly unchanged for years but guess what, there's no other car like it on the road..unlike all the others which are boringly similar. I've owned many different cars but the Jimny is the only non-sports-car I look back at after I lock it up for the day.

    Pretty fair assessment of Jimny's on road ability but somewhat missing the point of why they are so popular with their owners. The reason Suzuki hasn't changed the Jimny format a great deal since 1998 is that it works. There's something very endearing about this little car. In an era of blandly styled, interchangeable supermarket trollies, the Jimny is breath of fresh air, in standing out from the crowd and being a versatile, compact and individual choice.

    • @CarObsession
      @CarObsession  7 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Paul Davison Hi Paul, I see what you mean, but the car will also be used on the road as well as off it, so I feel that aspect needs to be covered as well. Thanks for watching 😃

      Thanks for you reply. It does have a fidgety on road ride and I appreciate that it may not be everybody's cup of tea. Live axles front and rear are very telling when it comes to road handling and ride quality (these are absolutely essential for good off road wheel articulation). It's quite easy to improve on road manners by the fitment of an after market steering damper. If I were to conduct a side by side review of the Jimny, it's partner would be a land rover defender. It would come out about the same or just below the defender off road and a whole lot better on road. Thanks again.

    I'm looking at replacing my 3 door off-roader, a '97 3.1 Turbo Diesel Bighorn, and this little car appeals to me. The new generation is about to come out and as I try to compare the two, I must admit, I am inclined to purchase the more basic utilitarian current model over the more complex and techy yet boxy newer one. One thing I find weird about your review (and all the others that I've watched), when you try to go into the back seats, why do you always enter from the driver side? As an owner of a 3 door off-roader, I have never entered through the driver side to go to the back seats. I'm not bashing, but would like to offer a tip when reviewing 2 or 3 door automobiles, enter through the passenger side. The driver is normally the last person to step out so if there are passengers, they always exit through the passenger side. In the Jimny, the passenger side seat is designed to fold AND move further forward with just one pull from the lever and it goes back to its original position after too. That being said, your review is what the general public would look into, so It's good and understandable. Thank you!

    • @CarObsession
      @CarObsession  6 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Hello Ben, thanks for watching. Sorry for the late reply, there appears to be a problem with new comment notifications. In regards to the driver's side thing, it's a funny thing, and one that I cannot really explain. I suppose it's because when people are filming around, they are instinctively on the driver's side as they face camera, and therefore it seems like the natural thing to enter from that side. That was a learning experience for me though, as I now go in from the passenger side when I review three-door cars. Evidence of that are the videos I shot with the new Vauxhall Corsa.

  • @CarObsession
    @CarObsession  6 ปีที่แล้ว +4

    PLEASE READ: I would like to state that this is an all-around review of the car, so if you're expecting the whole video to consist of me waxing lyrical about how good the Jimny is off-road, then you will not find it here. This is an overall evaluation of the car, so please bear that in mind when leaving comments.
    Frankly I am sick of getting flack for what I feel is an honest and fair review of this car. Furthermore, I filmed a separate video with the Jimny in which I took it off-road, so it's not as if I didn't bother to take the car off the blacktop. Video can be found here: th-cam.com/video/5Ac8Oi9iq4k/w-d-xo.html if you would like to watch it.
    I welcome criticism, as long as it is constructive, so calling me an "idiot", a "nitwit" or a "stupid brit" is just plain rude and disrespectful. This is not a high school classroom, so let's have a bit of respect. A lot of work goes in to making my videos so if you haven't got something constructive to say, then simply don't bother.
    It's also worth noting that the major car publications will offer similar reports, so it's not as if I'm being unfair. A simple google search will bring less-than-glowing reviews from the likes of WhatCar?, Auto Express, CarBuyer and The Telegraph.
    Thank you for reading this, this is not a comment I would normally put, but I feel I need to say something on this occasion. I understand there will always be others that will not agree with what I have to say, and that CAN make for a healthy discussion, but if you're here just to leave a shitty comment and move on then I rather you wouldn't.
    Rant over.
    Aaron.

    I want to get a jimny, is it worth to buy it? I've seen bad reviews of it and I would like to use it on the motorway too but I'm not bothered about being fast, I'm 5" small and im not bothered about the space, I know its a 4x4, i also wanna drive it around the city or around my town, is it worth to get? If not are there any good alternative?

    • @CarObsession
      @CarObsession  3 ปีที่แล้ว

      Hello Alex, thank you for watching, and for commenting. Are you talking about this generation Jimny, or the new one? If you're talking about this generation, then I wouldn't bother if you're planning to use it for driving about town and motorways (it doesn't react too well to crosswinds!). What about an 4x4 Ignis? Ok, that still won't be great on the motorway, but it'd be better suited for the kind of driving you'd be looking to do.

    I have driven in the older version quite a bit as my uncle had one for work for years. We described it as kind of a "stool" for it's stiff and wobbly feeling suspension on the road. It's pretty good off road even with street tires. It is functional and much cheaper than a big SUV though. All comes down to what you want to do with it and how much do you have to spend.

    • @CarObsession
      @CarObsession  7 ปีที่แล้ว

      Hello Richard, thanks for watching, and thanks for commenting. I grew up in south London (and still live here), therefore I had something called 'th fronting' which is quite common for accents of the London area. However, last year I was made aware of this, and this set out to remedy this. Therefore, it you watch my more recent videos, you should hopefully see (well, hear) that this issue has been resolved. Yes, I still revert to a v or an f on the odd occasion, but no-one is perfect 👍.

    • @thecarsguy6716
      @thecarsguy6716 7 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      OK Timo, theres a few reasons why this is an unfair comment. The reviewer correctly called the Jimny out on its roadgoing ability which is poor, he also pointed out a few things that are likely to annoy on a daily basis (lack of boot space, rear passenger access etc), these are points that real world buyers need to know. The Jimny is never going to drive well due to its dynamics and design (ladder chassis & slab sided etc) being from another time. Yes, it is very good off road but as with most cars of this type, it will spend most of its time on tarmac where the Jimny simply does not shine as the reviewer has confirmed. Car reviewers drive a lot of cars, hence they have usually driven similar cars so can make a judgment on how they compare which is the whole point of a review........

    Not a very good review at all.

    It does what it says on the tin and that's all you need.

    • @CarObsession
      @CarObsession  6 ปีที่แล้ว

      I would argue that's an unfair statement, particularly as not EVERYTHING was negative. As mentioned, this car is fantastic off-road, and I even filmed a separate video dedicated to off-road usage which I bet you haven't watched. As I've said to the others, this is an all-round car review, where all aspects of the car are assessed.
      Other car publications have exactly the same thing and you'll find they have come to a similar conclusion, I.E. it's fantastic off-road but it struggles in all other departments.
