The Guys in RUSH are such a class act..No egos, No Drugs, no songwriting credit issues etc...Neil Peart's Lyrics always speak volumes and tell stories... RUSH has never been all "Hey I met this chick at the Bar, I took her home and banged her".....None of that crap..This is another reason why they are one of the greatest rock bands ever.
They don't put a lot of emphasis on it, but they've never hidden the fact that they have "burned the midnight oil" before. Other than that I totally agree.
2Plus2Is4Minus1Thats3QuickMath I know this comment is REALLY old, but I love the line from Losing it, “some are born to rule the world, to live their fantasies, but most of us just dream about the things we’d like to be.”
@@gtpl1789 I listen to that song nearly every day. One of their most underrated. Stark and beautiful, speaking of loss, of fading into obscurity, of growing old. No other rock band sang of such things. It is also an excellent song to play on the drum kit and one of the few Rush songs I can make a passable stab at.
"We will pay the price but we will not count the cost." I teach middle school and made a huge poster of that lyric which I hung prominently in the front of my classroom. It was frequently referred to as the class guiding mission statement.
Without giving it too much thought, just going with what springs immediately to mind, I think my favourite line would be "And the men who hold high places must be the ones to start to mould a new reality, closer to the heart."
"He's old enough to know what's right And young enough not to choose it He's noble enough to win the world But weak enough to lose it He's a new-world man. " Yeah that's a great song
Love these guys, just imagination, heart and technological creativity at it's best without the drug influence. Geddy, Alex Neil you guys will always be my favorite Rock Band of all time. No one can do what you guys do.
On the day that my first grandson was born I cried because Neil announced his retirement. I have loved and respected the musical creation of these three men since they began. Thank you for sharing your lives with us.
i know this sounds wrong, but i honestly think rush ARE better than the beatles beatles where super talents and increadibly great, but rush do things to your brain that the beatles couldnt dream of doing
Agree there was going to be a first for everything that's been out there, but it doesn't mean there superior.Songs stand the test of time that's all and who they were.
I wasn't a fan until around 1980 but yet, I found myself reminiscent about the early days of Rush after watching the movie. Strange how I felt I knew them before I knew them. Extremely thankful that they made "Beyond The Lighted Stage" so we can all share that feeling.
I think Neil put it best during his acceptance speech at the Hall of Fame induction, when he quoted Dylan. I believe that all the guys in Rush influenced me in one way or another. And I don't believe my life would have turned out the way it did without their influence. Cheers Guys!
After becoming a fan of their music and lyrics I learned about their commitment to playing music honestly, to only putting things on the record that they could actually play. That resonated in my brain. Had a distaste for fakery before that but a desire to live honestly, to not try to appear something I am not, was awakened. Have always tried to be open about who I am and what I can do. That ethos has served me very well both professionally and personally. In eliminating artifice, one must become truly excellent at what they do or face having to admit they are not. Cheers.
Rush is a quintessential Canadian band. Intelligent, humble, rooted, no controversies, great music that pumps out far more power than a 3 piece band ever could. The movie was really well made.
My favorite Rush lyric? "All this machinery Making modern music Can still be open-hearted Not so coldly charted It’s really just a question Of your honesty. One likes to believe In the freedom of music But glittering prizes And endless compromises Shatter the illusion Of integrity."
i think its as close to watching particulary alex become very emotional reliving and seeing themselves as late teenagers desperate to make the big time getting to tour with kiss and probably realising that they did in fact stand a pretty good chance of continuing in the music business. dreams do come true guys thanks for sharing your thoughts and life and making this movie.
Sam Doyle KISS is a great band come on! Cathy tunes, and some really great songs like strutter, black diamond and Detroit rock city. And kiss is actually a much bigger (not better) band than rush.
I love that they cite them as strong influences for their work ethic - Working Men of rock, if you will. They obviously saw something in KISS that almost nobody considered, and showed that KISS took their own fans and their profession very seriously. Props to both bands.
I've played guitar and write my own stuff...Believe it or not Paul and Ace are very good musicians and song writers...They both are masters at creating the hook in a song...I can see Ace and Alex doing alot of laughing it up,both have great sense of humors
Alex looks like he is your dentist, insurance salesman or your kid's soccer coach. Nobody would believe he is a rock star and guitar legend. Geddy has the long hair and soul patch.
Every Rush fan has their favorite era. Mine is between 1980-1985. Permanent Waves (1980), Moving Pictures (1981), Signals (1982), Grace Under Pressure (1984), Power Windows (1985)
Honestly, I have a very hard time choosing. I adore A Farewell to Kings and Hemispheres and their harder prog rock sound. I love Moving Pictures, Signals, and Grace Under Pressure with their heavy synth use and lighter and faster solos. Roll the Bones and Counterparts bring back a rockier tone with newer technology and I love that as well. Vapor Trails, Snakes and Arrows, and Clockwork Angels bring a return-to-form for Geddy and Alex in a heavier tone, while Neil moved on to having a more pronounced "feel" on the kit vs his straight and to-the-point accuracy on earlier records. To many different pros to every era for me to say which one is my favorite.
"No rewards for resistance, No assistance, no applause.." -Lock and Key "All pre-ordained, A prisoner in chains, A victim of venomous fate, Kicked in the face You can pray for a place In heaven's unearthly estate" --Freewill
It is impossible to compare bands from different eras. However, Judas Priest is my fave, I just know it in my guts. Beatles are like the Leonardo da Vinci of rock: they started so many different things, but they also happened to be in the right place at the right time. That goes pretty much for Hendrix too. However, the respect that Rush shows to music and their fans is amazing. They are a total class act, and, for me, 2112, kings and hemi surpass Beatles’ revolver and Abbey Road. But that is not a fact, it is simply my personal experience of their music.
GamerNation57 your post was 2 years ago so if your Rush fan I assume you’ve watched by now. If not, you MUST watch it as it one of the better rock documentary ever, IMO.
That Neil wrote (we will pay the price but we will not count the cost)?? Geddy Neil borrowed that line from an author! tut's!...He mentions it in his tour book notes!!....
Total bull squeeze it took so long. But holy moly it was worth the wait. Dave Grohl made it the best induction I have ever watched. To have a guy like Grohl speak so highly of these three amazing musicians made me so joyous for them. To see Grohl in the freaking white kimono, hahahahaha!
Agreed. It's basically an insult to those who ARE inducted and who DESERVE to be. The entire premise seems to have been lost. I've given up caring about the "Hall of Fame"
One question I have never heard ansered in all of the interviews I've see is,"How did they get their nicknames, Dirk, Lerxt, and Pratt"? onybody out there know?
+MimmGigg thanks for the reply! looks like I had Neil's right, but I would have gone E my grave trying to figure out Geddy's I was close with A lex's but never would have figured out the whole story. Out of curiosity, where did you come upon this information? thanks, again!
Candid & self-effacing from the outset; this is why RUSH do not run with conflict of interest, & exactly why they've lasted so long in the business...let that be an example to all within the Music forum.
My FAVORIT'S, - and, I think, they are the best rock band in the world (including neil peart). And better are the beatles (...) and other bands, realy. - Please hear first - before of your comment: "TOM SAWYER and THE GARDEN"........, than response.
Sitting down with a legendary band wasting precious time asking dumb questions.... So painful to watch these kinds of interviews from non-musicians....
Strombelopolus has always been behind them, and believed in them when many other VJ's and music journalists wouldn't go near them because they weren't 'Cool' enough. Give the guy some slack, he asked some good questions and some whimsical fun questions. It wasn't meant to be a composing/arranging clinic for the Music Conservatory.
Pull out the "Jew" card? I have no idea what you are talking about; what is a Jew card and why would someone pull out a Jew card. Why would a person even say something like that?

I am an obsessed RUSH fan but.....there were plenty of Drugs. Passage to Bangkok?
They don't put a lot of emphasis on it, but they've never hidden the fact that they have "burned the midnight oil" before. Other than that I totally agree.
CARESS OF STEEL....in the Documentary , The guys admit that "They might have been pretty high" when they recorded C.O.S.
ROFL!!!>>>"No drugs!" No, you meant: No drugs.......anymore.
Well hash, but besides that I don't think anything harder
I love how softly Geddy speaks. And how funny Alex is sometimes. Two of my most favorite people in the world.
I knew "Beyond The Lighted Stage" would probably be good, but wow, it was an amazingly well done film. HIGHLY recommend.
One of my favourite lines in a Rush song is from Mission "We each pay a fabulous price, for our visions of paradise."
2Plus2Is4Minus1Thats3QuickMath I know this comment is REALLY old, but I love the line from Losing it, “some are born to rule the world, to live their fantasies, but most of us just dream about the things we’d like to be.”

I think Neil stated that By-Tor And The Snow Dog lyrics were written when they were high but that's about it.
The film is awesome!! I've watched 100 times over!
On the day that my first grandson was born I cried because Neil announced his retirement. I have loved and respected the musical creation of these three men since they began. Thank you for sharing your lives with us.
The interviewer asks really great, surprising questions that makes the guys think. Kudos for that!
Geddy's got to be the coolest Nerd\Wizard in the world.
Rush opened for Kiss more than any other band who opened for Kiss. These guys are the best people and musicians.
I wish we could get this show in the States. You Canucks are too lucky!
Nice fellas !I saw Rush before they even had any albums out!
I miss Rush more every day.

Not only does it sound wrong, it is wrong... that said, RUSH is great.
Not wrong, you are completely correct. The beatles are extremely overrated.
Agree there was going to be a first for everything that's been out there, but it doesn't mean there superior.Songs stand the test of time that's all and who they were.
Agreed, the Beatles are great, don’t get me wrong but I personally only like, like 2 songs from them.
The gentleman interviewing was excellent. Great questions and fun questions. 👏👏👏
Jimmy Fallon should be forced to watch for days straight until he stops interrupting.

What a great interviewer!
It's delightful to see and hear and experience Truth that Matters. Well Done Rush! Enjoy your Legacy!
Such nice guys
So much class!
They're so nice.
You have to be a very humble man to be a member of Rush and say that you learned a lot from KISS.
Why? Even if you don't like them, they toured a LOT and would know many important "tricks" of the trade.
Sam Doyle KISS is a great band come on! Cathy tunes, and some really great songs like strutter, black diamond and Detroit rock city. And kiss is actually a much bigger (not better) band than rush.
