This is the song that, in the summer of 1982, transformed me from a casual Rush listener to a die-hard Rush fanatic. I had heard the 2112 album, and while I liked the sci-fi rock opera aspect of it, the whole band vibe was unusual to my ears. I remember thinking "Wow. This is like a heavy metal Supertramp!"
But when I first heard the 𝐸𝑥𝑖𝑡 ... 𝑆𝑡𝑎𝑔𝑒 𝐿𝑒𝑓𝑡 live album and had a friend explain to me exactly what I was hearing, I was completely blown away. Performing this song, for each of the members of this band, is equivalent to juggling flaming torches while riding a unicycle-live, in front of 10,000 fans. Both Alex and Geddy play Taurus bass synths with their feet at various points. Geddy seamlessy plays bass guitar, foot pedals, a standard keyboard synth, 12-string guitar, and sings. I was stunned at the ambition of it all, and the way they could pull it off.
The band had one of the greatest work ethics in rock history. Geddy's parents were literally Holocaust survivors who immigrated to Canada with nothing. Alex's parents were also first generation immigrants from Serbia. Neil's family owned a tractor parts shop. All three men knew what hard work and sacrifice were long before they came together as Rush, and they applied that work ethic to writing insanely difficult music, rehearsing it for live performance, and undertaking brutal tour schedules to bring their art to the masses. Creativity, inspiration, and an insane ability to pour heroic effort into their music, resulted in incredible tracks like "Xanadu." The band would give no place to compromise whatsoever: every Rush album is essentially the three of them swinging for the fences, accepting the risks of commercial failure, and striving toward their best collaborative musical vision with no regrets or reservations.
Rush: your favorite band's favorite band.

Geddy is playing a Rickenbacker 4080/12. It’s actually a 12-string on the bottom. Had me fooled forever because you only see six tuning pegs. The other six stuck straight out rearwards. They don’t show it well, but he switches to the guitar from Alex’s solo to the end. They don’t show the Taurus pedals at all, either, but check out where Geddy first starts singing - he’s playing bass, singing, and playing the synth tones with his feet. While he’s playing the 12-string during the solo, he’s also playing bass tones with his feet. The multi-tasking is amazing. Check out Red Barchetta for another great bass part.

Neil was a well read poet, on top of a drummer. The song is taken from an opium induced 18th century poem, "Kubla Khan" by Samuel Taylor Coleridge. And the Hobbit reference isn't too far off. Nick Raskulinecz produced their last few albums (starting with Snakes & Arrows). Gave them an edgier sound. And it was harder for Geddy to hit the high notes (age)… that era may be more appealing. Far Cry was the most popular song from S&A.

RUSH is THE PERFECT EXAMPLE of the fluidity of MASTERING TIME SIGNATURES! I play drums and there are a few things that you need to know about Neil Peart’s ( pronounced PEER-T) character: First he writes the lyrics so he knows in advance what TYPE of song it’s meant to be ie ballad, driver, etc. Second he COMPOSES on the drums… like a carpenter who looks at a set of blueprints before building the object. Neil lays out a SKETCH in his mind of the VOICES of the drumset and builds the song from there. He is also a great LISTENER knowing when NOT to step over Geddy’s singing or Alex’s solos! Finally, he had perfect timing and fluidity of time changes. He said himself that it’s not about COUNTING the time signatures as much as fluid motion to change the tempo without counting: in other words it should FLOW! He hates repeating the same drum patterns in the same song meaning if he plays a fill one way the first time around he will play it differently the second time around. IE. Rolls down the toms the first time around and triplets or quads (all four limbs) the second time around. In short there will NEVER be another like him on planet earth 🌍 🌏 🌎! REST IN PEACE PROFESSOR!
With heart felt admiration and sincerity!

I highly recommend Rush's Grace Under Pressure album. I think it will change your mind about Geddy's voice, I can't imagine a different voice singing on it. Geddy's voice had to grow on me too. Take note of his precision, his high notes are spot on, never flat or sharp. And he is as accurate in concert as he is in the studio. So he's no Pavarottii. He's Geddy.

Neil Peart, the band's drummer and lyricist, was pretty well-read for a high school dropout. This song, "Xanadu," was based upon the famous Samuel Taylor Coleridge poem, "Kubla Khan." Coleridge claimed to have written it after an "opium dream" (he was an addict), and modern analysis generally revolves around the idea that the song's central theme was creativity itself: how striving for perfect works can become a trap, and how frustrating interruptions to the creative process can be. I have often wondered if the idea of being trapped in Paradise was also a self-referential nod to Coleridge's own opium addiction, but that interpretation doesn't seem to be one of academic consensus, so I might be way off-base.

This one not only got me an A on a take home essay for a college English exam but the prof actually read it to the class. All I knew was I'd heard the terms somewhere and after a little smoke... I had to sit in our car and listen to this over and over and I got the idea that it was about being a poet (like philosophers & holymen) was hard bc you're trying to expose the intrinsic meaning of your experience in life, and when you hit a nerve with society it gets sketchy. Hence the circle of salt in the poem it's for protection from the average uneducated folk who are kinda pissed off but don't know exactly what has offended them so they call you evil or a witch or whatever makes them comfortable while ignoring thoughts they just can't admit may be valid considerations. Idk... just sayin bc I liked your comment :)

Yeah, you were wring about the song is based on as well, funny guy. It's actually based on an unfinished poem called Kubla Khan. It was written after Samuel Taylor Coleridge awoke from having an opium induced dream about Kubla Khan and a place he envisioned called Xanadu that was full of beauty, pleasure and violence. Not LOTR at all. That's more like the Necromancer, maybe or TheTrees, I guess. I don't really pick up on the Tolkien references, but one of their albums takes me to that kind of place i suppose. Still phenomenal lyric with g in my opinion.

yeah wasn't specifically a Tolkien thing.. I was just joking about the 'fantasy' 'dragons' 'elves' etc type of vibe it was throwing off.
