for me the scariest part about the Draugr is that they can SWIM THROUGH SOLID EARTH. That's right, they can travel through the ground and any stone surface by SWIMMING through it. So basically if you can't kill this thing then you can't run or hide or even barricade yourself in a castle because it can just swim up through the ground, kill you, and then leave without a trace. Of course that would only happen if you disturbed its barrow or its treasure, so just steer clear of any burial mounds

For me Nishi is the scariest. Imagine that you are out in a camping trip with your friends and family and your friend is suddenly missing. You suddenly hear the voice of your friend from distance asking for help. You run close to him and find your friends dead body on the floor while the creature that you assumed to be your friend once again mimics your friends voice and proceeds to do the same to you.

We got some form of that too, called Hunyango (Filipino for Chameleon)
It's the standard doppelganger creature where it copies a friend or family member, apart from its voice.
It's said to know if it really is your friend or not, you should ask it a question since it apparently doesn't like to talk
Weird specific thing but the point is a lot of similarities between them, particularly the copying of familiar people

Fun fact: the chupacabra was most likely inspired by dogs with the disease mange which makes a dog scratch to the point where its hair falls off. It can happen to any animal, but dogs are the most common from what I can tell. This disease is also where the phrase "mangy dog" came from if you're a fan of old Scooby-Doo

She even got outside to see who it was, and went far outside. Then she remembered what things lurk in the darkness and ran home.
I kinda forgot this until i heard about Nishi.
Fun fact: Nishi is a common name here.

Here in Denmark, I grew up to be afraid of the three-legged White Horse. It symbolizes death, since it is a hellhorse. It's like a paralysis demon, where you wake up in the middle of the night and see it sticking it's head inside the room you are sleeping in. If you saw the horse, it would mean that you or someone in your family was gonna die. Just to put salt in the wound, when a new cemetary was built. The first buried there was said to be the gravekeeper of the dead, and since no one wanted to be the first, it was common practice to have a horse and cut one of it's legs off and bury it alive, so the horse would be the gravekeeper. This Myth later was adapted to be the Grim Reaper and his white skeleton horse.

@@andreas9181 They are called Nisser and not Nisses by the way ;) But I think the best translation of Nisse is probably Gnome. They later down the line became associated with Santa and then became Elfs instead. My favorite folklore is fairies, especially changelings. The idea that you or even your child are susceptible to being kidnapped by fairies and then be replaced by something else is terrifying. But what’s more horrid is the lengths people have gone to “regain” their loved ones because they couldn’t understand neurodivergent behaviors

    • @Breksss

@austinnighteyes1900 well, the fairies take the baby and replace it with a changeling fairy, and when the treatment to get the adult or child back works, it’s said the true form of the changeling is revealed to be common household items such as a block of wood or an old sock

My favorite yokai has to be the Shirime. You'll be walking alone at night when someone calls out and asks you to wait. When you turn to face it, it's just some guy, but he immediately disrobes. While you're wondering wtf, it points its butt at you and spreads its cheeks to reveal an eyeball where its orifice should be. It's not actually dangerous; it just likes freaking people out. 😄

As a Brazilian, I have never heard about Mapinguari, probably because it's more present in states near the amazon, but it reminds me of Curupira. Curupira is an entity that also has backwards feet but besides that its appearence is of a normal guy with very very bright red/orange hair. His backwards feet are used to confuse explorers/colonizers going into the woods. He's not really scary, like most of brazilian folklore. If you happen to make a video about most nonsensical funny folklore creatures then you should include brazilian ones lmao we have a pink dolphin that turns into a men and impregnates women, a smoking black amputee boy who basically loves annoying people and a woman who fucked a priest and got turned into a headless donkey as a punishment

9:39 Pontianak, also known as Kuntilanak or Langsuyar from Indonesia and Malaysia. It is a vampiric ghost of a woman who died during childbirth and haunts the earth, hunting children or men. She's a banshee-like flying revenant that kinda looks like Sadako from Japanese Ring movies, except that she also has long claws. Using these claws she tears your belly open and eats your organs once she has caught you. If you hear hear sudden loud ghostly moan in night, DON't run away so that sound starts to fade away. You see, If pontiana'ss noise sounds to be close, she's actually far away BUT if it sounds like coming far away then Pontianak is near by.

Another notable creature from Scandinavian folklore is näcken/nøkken. It is a shapeshifter, but its most common forms are a horse or a nude man. The horse form is pretty similar to the kelpie in its behavior so let's focus on the man aspect. In its man form, it will sit in a lake or stream and play a violin, the music being so exceptionally beautiful that it hypnotizes you. Because it will drown you while you have your guard down. Women and children are at higher risk of being targeted, especially pregnant women and unbaptized children. You could however learn to play the violin as beautifully as it if you approach it the right way.

It's not so creepy, but another weird/scary creature from Brazilian folklore is the headless mule.
Like, it's literally a headless mule. But instead of the head is a blazing fire going on. It is said it originates with women who engages with priests, and then are cursed in this shape. It's odd, but imagining that thing at night can be really intense.

This was fun. If you do a part 3 another creature you can include is the Bush Baby from Nigerian urban legends. It mimics the cries of a baby to lure people to their death. There's also Lady Koi Koi [sometimes madam koi koi] who haunts girl boarding schools ❤

When I was a kid, my mom told me nishi would call someone’s name three times and that too from the behind. If you turn around, you’re doomed. The nishi will collect your soul (probably in a coconut shell) and disappear. I’m not from Bangladesh tho. Maybe there’s a difference between the folklores when you cross the border.

As soon as you mentioned one of the early creatures I immediately thought of a Draugr being the number one but it really suprised me to see it actually be number one. Draugr (pronounced dr-ow-gr) can swim through literal earth and are said to often be resurrected simply because of their hate and anger toward humanity, lol. Spooky stuff and definitely terrifying 🌚

  • @mrstronk
    @mrstronk 5 หลายเดือนก่อน +4

Thankfully draugr aren't immune to physical damage but even after slaying them, they can haunt your dreams. There's lots of interpretations of draugr like the one you mentioned but the most common one is they are spirits of soldiers who have died and are too angry and have been refused by valhalla (viking heaven) and helheim (viking hell) because they committed an act so bad they get cursed to wonder the earth. To prevent this, vikings usually cealed the bodies of bad people into special unmarked tombs so they are cursed to never be able to leave them

While this critter isn’t strictly Oregonian (its territory stretches all the way from Maine), the Agropelter made it into my top four because of its actions alone. Described as a long, skinny ape with whiplike arms, Agropelters lives in hollow trees and, when it sees something invade its territory, the Agropelter breaks off pieces of the tree and hurls the shards at the intruder. Like a tree sniper!
It’s been blamed for many a woodsman’s death, actually, because the critters see lumberjacks as invading their home and they do not approve. Perhaps those lumberjacks should pick a new place to get the best wood. Pls make part 3😅

A couple for your next video...
    1) Nisse, who are Scandinavian house gnomes. If you treat them well and give them porridge on Christmas Eve, they will look after you and your property. If you don't (or forget the porridge), they will use their immense strength to wreck your house and maim your livestock.
    2) A Nuckelavee (AKA The Devil o' the Sea) is a purely malevolent skinless human/horse hybrid with putrid breath from the Orkney islands. Encountering one of these is generally fatal.

I'm from Brazil and I had heard of the mapinguari, but I feel like he seems like a similar or spin-off creature to the curupira and the caipora. TBH the two folkloric creatures I'm personally terrified of in this country are the mula-sem-cabeça (headless mule) and the corpo-seco (dry body) solely on the fact they stalk at night and cause havoc

You should showcase probably between two bone chilling yokai the first one is gashadokoru and the second hanako san the first is a a large bloodthirsty skeleton spirit which likes to appear in the dead of night and will begin to terrorise any human settlements nearby. They can’t be stopped and can only be delayed by prayer. They are is shrine that is made to prevent them from manifesting located in osaka and hanako san is basically the Japanese version of Bloody Mary but she has a more sadder backstory and is known to only appear in the 3rd floor of the girls bathroom in the 3rd stall so to whoever calls to her three times if she is there can be subject to either a brutal death or a scare. Love the vids btw can’t wait hoping for part 3 🤞🤩
