First, I'd like to send out a big thanks to the American Steamship Company (ASC) for inviting Vibe with Mike to visit the American Century. I know this fulfills a dream Mike never thought would be possible. This was all made possible by Kevin and David from ASC corporate in New York. Again, thanks so much fellows for helping spur this unique partnership. Together with Mike's channel, many many folks from all over the world will learn more about ASC and Great Lakes shipping. Mike from ASC did a fantastic job leading the tour of the American Century. He answered numerous questions and provided neat insights into the deck operations of this massive footer. It's obvious to me Mike enjoys his job and represents his company in a very professional manner. I really enjoyed learning from Mike and look forward to more of his tours in the future. And a big shout-out and thanks to chief steward Jennifer. I agree with Mike in that the galley looks so clean and organized. Geez....I'm hungry right now just thinking about all those yummy dishes!! And much of it home-made. Thanks so much Jennifer for describing your important role on the American Century. Good food helps make for a happy crew. As one of Mike's Boat Friends, I can't wait to learn more and more from these types of onboard videos. There is no question they help personalize the Great Lakes shipping industry. Yes the ships are awesome, but without the ASC folks like Mike and Jennifer the ships wouldn't move....they wouldn't haul, and they wouldn't have a reason to salute with their horns. Safe travels to the Captain and crew of the American Century.
It’s a dream come true for all of us to go onboard this famous Great Lakes 1000-foot ship! An amazing crew and a wonderful tour. It was amazing! There’s much more to come too! The fun is just getting started for all of us.👍⛴️
Congrats on getting onboard. It makes me laugh when you see the ladder gangway. These ships are at these ports so often it’s amazing they don’t have a better gangway. That they use. Is there a part 2 coming of the parts you didn’t show?
@@vibewithmike Often, when a ship is entering the canal entering the harbor you can actually hear them unlocking the hatches. If you get a next time on the deck of a ASC ship and get a chance to talk to a crew member a close up of how the hatch locks work would be so cool That Chef sure does prepare some great sounding meals!
@KenHartman152 there will be many awesome videos like this coming. I promise I will get many other things, including the pilot house, engine room, and other things that we want to see. I didn’t want it get everything in one video so we could have other videos that are just as fun with different aspects of a ship.
@@vibewithmike I use to watch a channel called "Joe Franta ship" he was a person that hired on to work as a crew member of ocean freighter ships and he would go into detail about all the various maintenance jobs they also did on the ships.
Mike, I am so looking forward with excitement to seeing this video of Life Aboard a 1000' Great Lake Ship! This is something all of us have wanted to do. And now through You with the graciousness of Kevin & David of the American Steamship Company we can!!! ⚓🚢⚓
I thought about you and all of our friends as I went up that ladder to board the ship. I really did! It made my heart happy. We are just getting started with the fun and adventures on these ships. It was really fun talking to the chief Cook as she talked about all the favorite meals and showed us some grab and go snacks for the crew on the ship.👍⛴️
Boat Friends, I saw firsthand how Mike B. and the other American Steamship Company employees interacted. It seriously was like a family reunion. Everybody truly cared about each other. I saw a lot of smiles! I’ve only been around a few companies in my lifetime that you could just feel that they care about each other like this. It was extremely impressive. I was blown away by the true camaraderie these employees had.
At the age of 86, I still recall my fondest memories of being on the lake freighter SS Huron. One of the 4 Wyandotte Chemicals ships. My father, Captain Clement F. Morreau asked me, as a teenager, if I would Ike to have a trip with him. It was the greatest thing I have ever enjoyed. The crew, the food, I covered every square inch of the ship, they taught me ow to steer the ship and I was able to steer from the Huron river it ship in lake Huron to he marker at Alpena Michigan and only varied 2 degrees form port to starboard. I even shoveled coal and many other adventures. I loved the bum boat in Toledo, the way the loaded the coal. The fresh air out in the lakes. I could go on and on. At one time or another my Dad was Captain of all four of their ships.
I bet it’s cool that you come from Maritime family. Paul, I really appreciate you taking time to tell us this wonderful group of stories. It really means a lot that you took the extra time to wait a break, like this for all of us. All the best to you. Your dad was the captain on four those ships
Hey Mike and All THE GLOBAL BOAT FRIEND NATION. Looks like a beautiful day in Dtown as was here in Bismarck albeit a little windy. What a great day for all of he Boat Friends thanks to he great folks and fellow Boat Friends with ASC to allow us to come on board. You really get a true perspective as to how big these vessels are, and easy to see they are over 3 Football fields long from bow to Stearns. Interesting to see the coal is really pulverized down, and to see the loading system which is much different than the system used for taconite pellets. The iron ore pellets are basically dropped down chutes by gravity into the cargo hold. The coal,is loaded using a Buhler type system using conveyor belts which the operator on board drops the coal straight down into the hold. Cargill B was the first elevator on the harbor to use the Buhler system for, loading grain, and now I see they are doing the same for coal. This coal comes from Colstrip Montana, and two unit trains per day come through Bismarck each day going to Duluth. Looking down the Bow of the vessel while loading I see the old Elevator S, but is do not know what it is called now but I spent a lot of time working in that elevator when i lived there. Also interesting was the Galley, and the cook was proud of her station as she should be. Sounds like she really tries to keep things changing so no one gets bored, but there are some favorites as she mentioned. This was a great video Mike, really got to see a whole different side of the equation for sure. Three long and two short for ASC for allowing us to come aboard, and safe passage for the good ship and crew, as well as a safe shipping season. Mike, what can I say, you really Brought the Thunder this time big fella!!!!
Very cool tour Mike. Love it and hope to see some more... thanks for the shot of the Fast Eddy... my all time fave laker with, IMO the best horn on the Great Lakes. I REALLY hope she gets back to work soon.
Mike, no question this will be your most impactful video to date. Folks, I got a sneak preview.....and trust me you'll want to watch this one. The start of a future series up close and personal. I'm so anxious to start a long string of comments about this video!
@@vibewithmike During the premiere, I asked in the chat about if the people on ship walked around much on the deck of the ship while it's out on the open water. Had to pause the premiere & restart, so I didn't see if my question was answered or not! Thanks!
@dbdouglas great question, the answer is yes, they are out there a lot on the deck. In the winter, they’re out there shoveling the deck and making sure there’s no ice buildup on the ship in the middle of the great lakes.
The crew on the American century are all professionals and they take to work very serious. It was such a delightful time to see these people doing a great job. Thanks for watching this tour video Ed
What a great video Mike. I recently was honored to tour a CSL ship a few weeks ago. Although I'm not jealous you got a tour, but very jealous you got a tour with Safety Officer Mike. What a great opportunity. Keep it up. Maybe one day I can join one of your toon rides ..😊
I think that’s so cool you were able to tour that vessel! Mike, he is a true professional and is well known in industry for being the best at what he does! Being able to tour this ship with him and have him explain everything, it’s unbelievable and super educational for people. This video was so fun to record and to be able to put this out for people to see behind-the-scenes now on about a 1000 foot Great Lakes ship
@elizabethw4519 I definitely wanted to make this educational and really show what the ship is like inside, nobody has seen the American century, this 1000-foot Great Lake ship like this before on video. It was beyond a pleasure to be able to record this and show this to you and our friends.⛴️👍
Mike, your passion, dedication, attention to detail has brought people together and you worked hard and with consistency for our entertainment and seriously you affected us in a very unique and positive way with your enthusiasm. That wouldn’t have been a great community without a great captain, as you are. This experience is so much deserved and I wish you to have many more experiences like this one. Thanks to the ASC for letting you bring us on the American Century, a great ship indeed. As an alpine girl I can only dream about ships and your channel is a window to the world I like. Thank you, Mike. You’re such a cool guy! ⛴️🌊🗻🇺🇸🇮🇹
My friend from Italy, I really appreciate you writing this comment. I like your terminology, Alpine girl, I love that! It was so fun to be able to provide this tour to you and all of our friends. I was thrilled in particular when I was able to speak with the cook, Jennifer, she is so awesome and loves her job and you know that a translates to awesome food for the crew. It’s always wonderful seeing a comment from you knowing that you’re half a world away from me in Italy, thank you so much, thank you for being part of this channel, thank you for being a friend! 🇮🇹🇮🇹🇮🇹🇮🇹🇮🇹🇮🇹🇮🇹👍👍👍⛴️⛴️⛴️⛴️⛴️⛴️⛴️
Jim, I’m thrilled that you enjoyed the video. It was a blast being on the ship and being able to provide all of this educational information about the ship to everybody.
I really had a delightful time making this video and I’m so thrilled that all of the Boat friends get to watch it. Have a fantastic fantastic Friday night.
What a great, informative briefing on the ship’s operations. Thanks for including the train shot but I need to correct your statement about the “freight train departing”. The train you shot was actually a loaded coal train arriving at the coal dock. Arriving, loaded trains go around the coal storage area on the outer loop then transition to the inside loop on the west side of the facility. The coal cars are rotary-dumped, several at a time, back on the east side. The train you shot is BNSF train C SCMSUD. (Coal loads from Spring Creek Mine, MT to Superior, WI docks. Three trains per day depart Spring Creek on this route to supply Detroit Edison. The empty trains return as symbol E SUDSCM. Thanks again for the great tour and ALL your great videos.
OK, good to know about the train. I’m kind of a novice when it comes to trains. However, thank you so much for taking time to watch this ship tour video, my friend.👍⛴️
@@vibewithmikeHey Mike thanks for the quick reply. Take a look at Google Earth’s image of the coal dock and it makes sense. In addition to the great ship action there, you have an outstanding railroad museum as well. Hoping for your continued blessings!
I'm a former Navy Hospital Corpsman who was attached to the USMC; the reason I really enjoyed this video was in 4 .5 years, I never stepped foot on a ship! Lol! Heck- and this is true - I am a horrible swimmer, too. They were desperate in ‘77 I guess. 😄 I’m the newbie/FNG on here and look forward to more of your great videos. TY! -Doc L. Retired Paramedic
Thank you for your service! It means a lot to me and many others. It’s people like you that served our country that allows me to make videos like this, and others to do what they want too. Thank you!🙏🇺🇸
@@vibewithmike You are welcome, Sit! Thank you for your kind words! 😀 I had to medically retire as a Critical Care Paramedic in ‘08 from civilian EMS - but unfortunately, I had no choice; I was a paramedic first responder at the Pentagon on 9/11 because PTSD was eating me up inside. But I'm remarried, happy, and blessed, to say the least. I'll be browsing your videos this pm and I’m sure I’ll find a good one! Keep doing what you're doing my friend- you're doing great. -Doc
I hadn't noticed, the VWM channel passed 30k subs, Mike!! That's flippin' awesome. I think you'll hit 50k subs by the end of the year. And this video is going to be one the best yet. I can't wait to tour the AC!! Thank you for doing what you do for us.

This ship tour videos was so fun and there no video like this online showing the ship American Century like this. I’m so happy because I was able to record this tour for you and our other Boat Friends!⛴️👍
Although the people at American steamship Company are 10 out of 10, it’s a very caring organization towards your employees. It’s unbelievable and it’s ran very well. They care about employees.
Fantastic video, thank you for sharing your time aboard the American Century with us Mike. Looking forward to my first trip to Duluth in September. Again thank you!

Thanks sooo much Mike and the ASC!! Mike, when you did a 360 degree spin on the deck of the American Century, I expected to see a film crew tagging behind you...your videos look so professional!! The train that we saw leaving the Superior Midwest Energy Terminal dock was one of 6 or 7 that were needed to fill this massive ship. That is between 750 and 800 rail cars of coal...if my assumptions are right. I'd love to hear from our ASC Boat Friends on how close my estimate is. Thanks again, Mike!
What a wonderful opportunity you had, and that we then had through viewing your video! You must have thoroughly enjoyed every minute of that tour. Thanks to the company, and to the personnel for allowing you to go aboard and film. Now when we see these videos of passing ships we will have a plethora of new things to envision and to think about, as we were actually on board of a freighter!
Our tour guide, Mike, he is so fantastic and extremely knowledgeable and a big-time leader in the industry when it comes to safety, security and compliance for these big ships
Hi Mike boat friends ! Excellent ! Excellent! Ship tour ! You took a lot of people on board a ship for their first time today ! What i noticed was the trimming lights and the skill of the guys loading the ship ! moving the chute back and forth to keep the ship on an even keel Looked like there might of been just a little list to starboard going out the channel ? unless it is camera refraction ? Could be an army of guys down below shoveling like crazy to level it out again ! They can also level it out with water in the ballast tanks on the one side Something to look for in the future ! when a ship comes and goes checkthe trimming lights to see if it is leaning over or not ? They also trim fore and aft The moden galley on a new ship is impressive i noticed rails sort of cafeteria style to slide food trays on The ship is so big it hardly ever moves would take a lot to get stuff rooling around. Have a great day
I really liked the STP Safety Program. It really hit a chord with me. Drilling that important concept into all crew members certainly has helped avoid issues I bet. No room onboard for uncertainty.
@@chuckg6039 Those signs are for not only safety but also orientation Of crew rotation a new crew member or anybody comming on board Mike could find out how often crews rotate ? At lower lakes in the past the crew would work 90 days get. 16 days off then switch ships Tho each ship is the same each ship has it own differences By rotating the crew they become proficient on all the different ships and if needled can be moved seamlessly from one ship to another
So fun. I couldn’t believe when she said pizza as a favorite dinner. Love it-my fav too. Thank you Mike and American Steamship Company. Great actually being on board the ship up close.

We have been talking about being on board one of these ships for over a year. Because of this wonderful TH-cam community we have all built together, the dream has come true for us.
Mike,. For Sure "One" of your best productions, the view from your vessel was a different twist too. And a big Shout Out for letting us all on board an amazing WorkHorse of a vessel. Something to just roll around in your head. Not many things you saw on that vessel would "Float" if it was thrown into the water, Just to mention a few.... The engines, the boom, those air vents, hatch covers, all the kitchen equipment, the steel of the hull would not float if it didn't displace more weight in water than the total mass weight,. Ok now ponder this......They just added 80,000 Freaking Tons of Cargo to a floating wonder and it floated away,,. it boggles my mind,. and airliners are another one that boggles the mind when you start picking it apart.
@@vibewithmike It would be cool to see the engine room and water pumps for ballast,. But I'm not complaining. This one was for Sure a Home Run outta the park hit.

Thanks for this great comment. We sure watched that coal being loaded up close !!
An unbelievable comment like we always see from our friend Chucke! . What a great comment. Great information and what fun

This was an unbelievable tour of 1000 foot ship. Onboard the ship!⛴️👍
Very cool tour Mike. Love it and hope to see some more... thanks for the shot of the Fast Eddy... my all time fave laker with, IMO the best horn on the Great Lakes. I REALLY hope she gets back to work soon.
There will be plenty more up close and personal ship videos coming
Mike, no question this will be your most impactful video to date. Folks, I got a sneak preview.....and trust me you'll want to watch this one. The start of a future series up close and personal. I'm so anxious to start a long string of comments about this video!
Chuck, this ship is absolutely huge in person, standing on top of the deck.
@@vibewithmike And the crew must verify hatch covers remain secure and there is always equipment maintenance and cleaning the decks of ore and coal.

Hey Mike great to see you from Jolene Johnson in Saint Cloud MN

Awesome video Mike. So cool Tobe on deck of that huge ship. Safe travels American century
Keep it up. Maybe one day I can join one of your toon rides

Great video! One for the Greatest Hits video! I learned so much!
I’m glad that you were able to learn many things about this ship. I wanted to be very educational and fun at the same time.
That was fun! Thanks for the tour. In my next life, I would love to be a cook on one of those big ships.

Nice one Mike good to see a different view
It’s always fun to change it up a little bit to show other things going on with these ships. It was a straight up honor being on this ship.
Mike, your passion, dedication, attention to detail has brought people together and you worked hard and with consistency for our entertainment and seriously you affected us in a very unique and positive way with your enthusiasm.

Hi Mike boat friends !
Excellent ! Excellent!
Ship tour !
You took a lot of people on board a ship for their first time today !
What i noticed was the trimming lights and the skill of the guys loading the ship !
moving the chute back and forth to keep the ship on an even keel
Looked like there might of been just a little list to starboard going out the channel ?
unless it is camera refraction ?
Could be an army of guys down below shoveling like crazy to level it out again !
They can also level it out with water in the ballast tanks on the one side
Something to look for in the future !
when a ship comes and goes
checkthe trimming lights to see if it is leaning over or not ?
They also trim fore and aft
The moden galley on a new ship is impressive i noticed rails sort of cafeteria style to slide food trays on
The ship is so big it hardly ever moves would take a lot to get stuff rooling around.
Have a great day
I really liked the STP Safety Program. It really hit a chord with me. Drilling that important concept into all crew members certainly has helped avoid issues I bet. No room onboard for uncertainty.
@@chuckg6039
Those signs are for not only safety but also orientation
Of crew rotation a new crew member or anybody comming on board
Mike could find out how often crews rotate ?
At lower lakes in the past the crew would work 90 days get. 16 days off then switch ships
Tho each ship is the same each ship has it own differences
By rotating the crew they become proficient on all the different ships and if needled can be moved seamlessly from one ship to another
@@carllafrance5510 it's an attitude and mind set....and a good one. If in doubt, don't just blindly forge ahead.

There are many things still that we didn’t see on that ship so plan on seeing that in the future
@@vibewithmike It would be cool to see the engine room and water pumps for ballast,. But I'm not complaining.
This one was for Sure a Home Run outta the park hit.
@lectro88 I definitely will get many other aspects of ships. Including all of the things that you want to see. I want to have many different videos. I don’t want to have one video where I get everything. That’s what makes it fun, I can have different videos showing all these new things.
@@vibewithmike You're doing Great. No Worries.
The fun is only beginning with the ships
