As a reloader I love this video from you guys. Awesome stuff seeing what you use and your processes.
I am running a 22-250, Ruger American Predator, with my thermal. 50 grain V-Max with H380 powder. 1" groups at 200 yds, allows me to point and shoot out to 250 yds at night. Tried other calibers but 22-250 is my go to gun for coyotes. Great videos!

The .22-250 is near and dear to my heart. Mine is nowhere near the level of your custom builds, but in spite of the fancier stuff in my ensemble, it is my go-to. I wish it ran the heavy bullets, but it pre-dates the heavy stuff outside of service rifle competition loads. A person can’t go wrong with it, and it isn’t too rough to find components and to get a pet load it will digest to reach out and touch a sassy yodel dog! Enjoyed this technical video as much as all of your action sequences you made your way with. Keep them coming and keep the coyotes in their place!

That was a great video James. I shoot Factory rifles but i’ve spent lots of time getting the best gear and fine tuning my reloads so that i get the very best groups that i can from them, I don’t do it to save money, I do it to shoot better👍🏼🏴.

This is a great video. Having recently gotten into serious reloading, looking for that elusive consistency, your methods are another tool to get to the best round possible for my rifle. It's not custom but reloading makes it better. Thanks for going step by step for us. ;-)
James drinks pre-workout before reloading those rounds as each rep gets his pump on. Thank you for showing us "A Way". Plenty of us understand what you mean when you're showing us a way...not THE way. This video is very appreciated as I am about 16 months into reloading and feel I can be more precise just from watching this video and doing my own careful measurements.

I used to hunt coyotes with a .22 250 Ruger number 1 varmint with a Leopold scope. It was great medicine for yotes. ♥️
Yeah, my rifle would shoot 1/2 inch at 100 yards all day long with reloads. I did a lot of long range shooting and I still rarely took a shot past 200 yards. One time I shot a coyote at about 400, but only once.

This video is awesome! What I'd like to see, is you buy something like a factory Tikka 22/250 and do your load development magic to see how close it comes to your custom rifles?
I just got a Tikka T3 in 22-250 for Christmas. With Hornady varmint express 55g I shot nearly same hole groups just like this yesterday. I’m not sure if I got lucky or if that is normal.
A Tikka will come close. I'm running the factory Tikka with the 1-8 twist. I shoot 80 eldm with it.

Good video...like you said in the beginning a lot of your equipment is top of the line and $$$ and that's fine.
I've been reloading for 40 years with basic reloading tools,hand case trimmer,propane annealing,weight bar scales, and digital scales,powder thrower,and hand trickle it up, good rifle and the end result is the same tiny groups. Have you ever tried the 53gr vmax,better BC then the 50s by a bit for longer ranges.
Reloader for 16 months...I like throwing powder a tad low and trickling it in. Maybe for the reassurance or something that I like about that.
This is one thing I really want to learn how to do because I think it is something that we all are going to need to start doing because of the prices of ammo are not going down but for be on the mark rite were you want to be to make that kill very nice and clean ........

Hi James thanks for another great informative video... Watched the reloading video from a year ago as well and decided to purchase the hard to find/buy Forster press....Never would have known about it if it wasnt for your video so thanks! Ive had/used the rock chucker for around 30 years.. tired of stuck cases! My question is would my Rcbs dies work in it or do i actually have to get forster dies? Thanks again

I have started using forester neck tension gauge and 21st century expander mandrel cal specific, for all my reloading activities doing little things give you small gains.

I have a question for you. I have read your replies and know the reasons for the love for the 22-250. It has been THE quintessential coyote round for some time now. I did see our reply to Zac from 5 months ago...so, please, take it easy on me! LOL! I have been listening to your podcasts on Spotify as well....
Question is, why not the 243? I see a lot of coyote hunters use it. you can put it in an AR10 platform for fast follow ups, ( not that you guys miss much), It seems that you can load it to 58 grains and up to the 100 grain range? With ballistic performance similar to the 22-250 and the energy exceeding it in some aspects, why not go that route? It seems that its been around since 1955 and isn't going anywhere either? Recoil seems about similar to 22-250? DOes it just come down to preference at that point? Less fur damage? I'm truly curious, not trying to be a contrarian or smart ass. I've seem your videos and results. It's undeniably effective! However, wouldn't the 243's 6mm bullets buck the wind just a tad better by design? It seems it has a lot going for it? no desire to try it ever?

I'm curious why you switched from the 60gr CE bullets, to the 50gr Vmax? Only reason I ask is because I'm currently running a .224 Valkyrie that I just can't seem to get to group with factory ammo. That has brought me to a fork in the road. Do I try reloading the Valkyrie or just switch to a 22-.250? I've always ran Hornady in all my rifles, but I was thinking about reloading the Valkyrie with the 60gr CE, after seeing the success you guys have had with it.
A whole lot of jargon. Literally just got here and there is a ton of words and phrases I didn't understand whatsoever. Still, very great and no doubt informative (not to a complete noob who just got this in my recommended) video. Haven't watched a 55 minute youtube video and was hooked the whole way through in quite some time.

@@ONEILLOPS Not necessarily. Perhaps just an explanation on what the jargon means. You mentioned head space a lot. Simply explaining what these shooter/reloader jargons mean to the layman can go a long way.
Try putting in a couple dryer sheets with your corn cob media… been doing it for years keeps your corn cob clean.

I know you run an 18” 1-8 twist barrel on your 22-250 with the 50gr Vmax but what sort of velocity are you getting from your load?
I also shoot a 22-250 but with a 24” 1-14 twist barrel and I am thinking of getting a shorter, faster twist barrel but wasn’t sure on how much it will affect my MV.
Any advise would be welcomed, thanks.

You had me at 22-250. I love that round. Have reloaded and used it for years. Can not be beat in my opinion.
" 22-250 can't be beat"...I shoot a calibre that gives nothing away in velocity and performance.. especially accuracy to the 22-250 and uses a lot less powder to achieve the same velocities with a lot longer barrel life...😉

I’m curious if you have played with the 224 Grendel in a ar platform for coyotes and your opinion on it
I was thinking about getting a 22-250 but don’t they take large rifle primers? Those are impossible to find in my area. Thinking about going the .223 rem route because the small rifle primers are vast or more obtainable in my area.
What twist are your barrels? Does twist rate matter in reloading? I'd like to know more about the proper jump to the lands. Great video!
8 twist... I can do a video on that.
Bryan Litz from Applied Ballistics has published a lot of data about twist rates and finding the right bullet to match it. Every reloader should check it out.

@@hulley5223bullet jump can be an issue. Easiest to do in my 10mm conversion using 40 s&w brass shooting around 50 yards. 10mm and 40 s&w loaded with 200 grain bullets. Bullet jump makes a big difference. Ill let my 338 seat my bullets and then drop an additional.010 before i crimp the brass these days.

Is your re-loading center/ room an isolated chamber that maintains an air temperature and relative humidity set point at all times?
Let's just say the humidity in this room is not a factor.

Ok, I've listened for a while, and I've been loading for 37 years, my rifles shoot 1 moa and most shoot .3 .25 you can use custom dies, but I never have any trouble with feeding issues. Maybe I should make a long video, your taking about stuff I used back in the day
I’m building a 1:8 22-250. I am a competitive prs shooter from Canada. I’m curious to know the weight of your coyote rifles scoped ready to rock. Minus the ammo. I have built many rifles in my day. Ultra light to ultra heavy. I find myself wanting a chassis system on my new 22-250 build because I feel it creates a better platform for fundamentals. But that usually comes with a lot of weight. So I’m curious what you guys like for weight. I’m ain’t a small man so I think our idea of heavy or light would be similar.

So I’m getting into coyote hunting and was thinking about the 22-250 and found your podcast episode about this video. I think I’m dead set on the 22-250 now after this but the big question I have, what companies make barrels with a faster twist rate other than a 1:12 or a 1:14? I see ruger has a 1:10 but I’d like a 1:8 or a 1:9 to run those heavier rounds through it.
Tika offers a 1:8, Bergara a 1:9, Salvage a 1:10. There a probably others, too.

It looks like your are running AICS pattern mags. I've tried a 22-250 in them and can't get them to feed reliably. What mods did you have to make if any to get them to run?
Yes we run the AI mags as well as the Accurate Mags on our 250's with zero issues man, none... Who's your rifle builder?
@@ONEILLOPS its an old rem 700 vssf 2 with the HS precision stock that I put into an XLR chassis. Wondering if I need to tweak the feed lips on a mag?
@@gusmengers5454 All of ours are on custom actions which have a better feed ramp than the factory 700. Open your feed lips just a tad in the front so the nose of your rounds angle with the more abrupt 700 ramp.

Depending on the Rifle we use, 3300-3700.
Why do you use a 1:8 twist for 50 grain bullets? A 1:12 would handle 50 gainers just fine.
Yes a 12 will work fine, but I want the option to be able to run heavier rounds if I need to.
What about 222 mag? Is that considered varmint round?
a 222 mag could definitely get the job done assuming you are using the right bullet, but the 22-250 is far more popular and therefore easier to find components for, which is extremely important now because of shortages.

As a strictly shotgunner, I have to go with 12 gauge. Birdshot or buckshot.

Dont try and get accurate load through the powder amount, you get a good ES with your powder first, and if it is not accurate then get it done with seating depth and it should come into accuracy within 6 thou of movement, most think the accuracy comes from powder but it does not, you can have a accurate load at 100 yds with a good seating depth and crap ES but it wont be good out past 500 yds, i am a proven F Class shooter if thats worth anything/ Hey dude that is a nice technique you have there.
Great bit of info! Most of these rigs are designed for 400 and in. When we go further with the 6 or 6.5s or 30s we pay closer attention to the ES and SD numbers.

22-250 really? Better be a fast twist barrel.
The 22 cm and alpha ocd brass give that a big edge. My 22 dasher pushes the 90 grain a tip at an easy 3100 fps. The 22 cm does it better at 3200. But a lot more powder. My main point is the 250 is dead without a fast twist barrel
I can see you don't follow our work closely, at all.
Your point is an opinion and that's it. The 250 has and will be used well before and beyond the fad of any new cartridges. I've been using fast twist 250 barrels for 20 years plus, before the CM was even a dream. I could break apart your whole concept, but I'm getting the feeling it's gonna be a kool-aid drinking, Ford/Chevy argument, with you.
But I'm gonna do it anyway.
We kill 200-300 annually, and by annually, I mean in a 4 month time frame, consistently, I'm not saying that to brag, or throw my dick on the table, I'm saying this because it's experience, over the past 25 years. You come here and say the past few thousand that we have killed with a cartridge selection that you think is "dead".
The 22-250 "really?" My response... Absolutely every day of the week.
Why?
Maybe it's because the case taper allows a mag fed system to be more reliable and fluent than the Creed design. Maybe it's because I've built 3 22-Creeds the past 2 years and can tell you from personal experience the 250 is easier to load for.
Maybe, it's because we keep the fur and there is absolutely no reason for me to utilize the case capacity and push a heavier projectile faster, when I don't need to.
Maybe it's because we are more meticulous and try to fool the animal at a distance much closer than guys think.
Maybe it's because I"m not a PRS guru, I'm not a comp guy, I'm not tryin to lay hate at 1/2 mile or a mile on fur, so I don't need the BC that you do.
Maybe it's because my 22Creed is for Longer ranges "IF" I can't do my job getting the animal close.
Maybe it's because the 250 delivers every bit of hydrostatic shock that I need, with the projectile of my choice.
OR maybe It's just a personal preference, which I have ZERO issue saying.
Just don't come here and tell us, the cartridge selection of our choice is dead, it's definitely not an educated statement.

Personally I shoot a small handful of coyotes here in Utah and if I go call Wyoming I'm running a PRC I like to shoot the dog that posts up at 600 and barks. I’m confused on why you think this style of hunting is hard . As someone who had shot long range and reloaded for 15 years plus hunting just about everything in my area I can tell you with certainty hunting coyotes with thermal is a lot of fun but not challenging. You’re making it seem like you need to reload and practice to be successful which isn’t true . Give a 14 year old kid who hunts with his dad on the weekends a $2500 384 thermal and a factory rifle ( flat shooting ie. 22-250, 243, .220 swift ) and I guarantee he will kill coyotes, granted there are some in the area. You are making this “ style” of hunting seem like it takes an incredible about of skill and discipline in fact all it takes is money.
Take three 14 year olds with you and simultaneously take down 2 coyotes at the call. Then have one of those 14 year olds smoke another coyote that ran off to about 350 yards away. Training, discipline, and reloading consistency IS what gives you the edge. If you're ok with killing a few coyotes, take those 14 year olds with you.

Everyhting i just watched i had read 2 days ago in a reloading manual and ive pretty much pinpointed everything i gotta do to reload which i will be doing very soon.
