That old 788 and H380 , brings me back to my 1st loading set , I'm 60 now , started reloading when I was 15, I let a guy talk me out of that 788, I still regret it till this day...
My grandfather was an avid reloader. He didn’t have a tumbler, but he would pay us kids a dime to fill our coverall pockets with sand and spent cartridges… then roll down an embankment behind his barn until the brass was cleaned to his liking.
I Just finished up my load developement using the same Nosler 50g BTV With my Savage 12 BSS in Rem 22-250. Final result of 3693 fps, ES 20, SD 8.5. Componets used Laupa Brass, CCI 200 primer, 34.0grs of TAC powder. Result down range was 0.33" @ 100yds. Great Video.
The 55gr Nosler Varmageddon is a freaking tack driver in both of my 22-250's so is the Hornady 40gr V-Max... @@russtuff Yeah ,bullets, powder and primers have become spendy and hard to find. Especially for the 6.5. At least here in Canada. The first 22-50 that I purchased was used and at first that shot straight half inch or less groups . I shot crows at 300 yards. I settled on Varget A-Max 52 grain with 1:14 twist. After serval hinders of rounds, the gun shot erratic which is kind of what you’re seeing for your testing. I sent it in to Ruger and they said that the barrel was worn out. I just noticed your rifle is a Rem 788. My first rifle (1977) was a barreled action LH 788 in 6mm Rem.. I sent it to Bishop for a stock and it has been very accurate. At the time there was not much in LH. I think Rem. had a LH 700 in 30-06 (which I have also). My BIL has a stock 788 in 22-250 and has taken wood chucks out to 400 yards with factory ammo.
Hello, I have the very same rifle only with the factory barrel and I was having flyers like yours....I free floated the barrel and bed the action and they went away....Also I put a timney trigger in it...My favorite rifle for yotes!

Johnny. I'm really enjoying this video series. I had a 22-250 788 once, that was many years ago. one thing I think about, the 788 is a run of the mill, however, as I stated,, Mill, production milling, they made thousands of those rifles and nothing custom was done to those actions. they are as they came from Reminton. -Dave
Spot on. He makes it look easy but it really takes a lot of time to just prep and load, nevermind the photography and the shooting. I've had 3 different 22-250 barrels and all were Remington take offs and one I had rechambered in 22Dasher. Recently I put on a smithed/fitted 22-250 take off on one of my actions and is looking good but it is too early to tell.
Hey Johnny, I run 50 grain Nosler BT in my ruger M77 26" 22-250 with 38 grains of H380 and it shoots bugholes. 52 grain bthp I run 36.5 grains of varget. It also shoots bugholes...You'll like it....h380 will be your go to powder.
I was just reading that the Speer 70gr Semi Spitzer SP was designed to stabalize in 1:12 and 1:14 twist, with its very short round nose design. Its listed as a heavy jacket, controlled expansion, varmint bullet. Might be a fair option for hunting, if the 62gr GD doesn't stabalize. If it shoots, it would be very interesting to see what it does in gel.
Great to see a 788. I have the same gun, but with original barrel cut down to 21.5". I get similar accuracy as your getting with 50gr Vmax and 34gr Varget. Of course not with the velocities your seeing. That H380 load was smoking. I have yet to try H380 but maybe I should get a lbs. At least it is readily available, Varget not so much. Interesting that the POI was identical for both loads with such different velocities.
38 grains of H380 behind a 52 grain HPBT match bullet resulting in a Dime size five shot group on a paper target 100 yards away. That is the classic 22-250 Remington load developed by Bruce Hodgdon himself and how that powder got its name.
If any of you 22-250 fans are interested check out wtw's video the other day of some reloads I sent him, pretty good group at 100 yards with blitzkings and imr4064 and that's who tee who
Watching these again as I’m doing a new load for my 22-250. The last H-380 shot the rifle didn’t recoil straight back as it had for previous shots, you got some barrel lift which suggests probably a bit more shoulder behind the shot forcing the recoil up instead of back.
Anything 22-250 is awesome reason I subscribed. Would like to see the 55 grain ballistic silvertip reloaded. Cause that's what I want to reload when I get started seems as tho I would save money in the long run. 35-50 dollars for a box of ammo is a lil bit much
You can see on the rifle at 19:00 when you shoot the last (10th) shot, something else is happening. Quite nice to video your shooting like this, you can notice things afterwards that can help alot in diagnosing accuracy issues. Wich that load does not have.
Nice shooting and nice rifle! I reload my 22-250 ammo and I use H380 and I get great groups with Hornady 55 grain bullets also. I can't use any bullets heavier than 55 grains, the rifle with a stainless steel barrel has a 1 in 12 twist rate, a little faster than your Douglas' 1 in 14.
I’ve had great results with H380 in my Tikka 243. The most accurate load I’ve had in that gun is Berger 95 grain Classic Hunters and the minimum Berger load of H380.
I shoot those same Bergers in a 10 twist 6mmBR, I also shoot the 55 and 70 gr SBK with the same barrel. My goto powder is Norma 203 B for the 95 and AA 2520 for the light pills.
55gn Nosler varminter BT run through both my old 77 bull barrel and my late model Predator 22/250 incredibly well. Sniping crows at set up 600 prone is child’s play. It’s hard to even try anything else.
Johnny, Boy great video except for number 10 flyer, I have been shooting the Superformace Varmint Hornady .50gr and getting 3970 FPS, an the groups are almost one hole @ 100yds, at 300yds I shot a .35 group. So fast and so accurate, do have a photo of the group @ 300. Do you have any idea of what H could be using in their boxes right off the shelf? 24" heavy barrel on a B-14 Bergara , sure like some input from you. This stuff is amazing, and your video was very use full about the H 380👍👍👍👍
i load for a 22-250AI using 55gr and 60gr vmax i found that the ADI AR2209 (H414/H4350) worked better than AR2208 (varget) the ADI powders are sold in the USA by hodgdon.
I had very similar results with my 22-250ai with 55gr bullets. The rifle has a 26in gain twist barrel. It was only when I got into the 4350 burn rate range that I was able to get the speed this cartridge is capable of.
I think the 22-250 may be one of the best calibers for punching through body armor. Any chance you could test various bullet designs vs some thick ar500 to see what turns to smoke and what pokes holes? China is rumored to have Ironman looking suits that makes the 2 California bank robbers look soft. It is supposed to withstand sustained small arms fire from all standard hunting rifle calibers using standard ammo.
There is always a flyer. One thing I would like to see is to strap the rifle down and use a trigger weight pull gauge that way human deviation would be eliminated.
A comment about your rifle rocking, I don't remember the maker, but they made an attachment that would screw into the front sling swivel (if you have one) it was in a u shape with a flat bottom. to keep the rifle from rocking.
I competed using a 22lr...at 50 yards. Most use sub-sonic rounds. Used an expensive rifle. ( I dont have one of those ! ) First think I notices.. I could " see " the bullets go down range. With a perfect back ground and lighting this is possible ! Very interesting..... I watched the bullets cork screw down range. After trying this with three different rifles. Im now positive its not the shooter. Its the rifle and or bullets/ cartridges ! There is only so much a person can do to make a rifle shoot accurately. After that....its mother nature at work ! People make up many excuses for accuracy. Not many apply !
Awesome video! I wouldn't be too awfully worried about SDs and ES with the 22-250 due to the speeds being so high. 50 FPS isn't going to matter in ranges that the 22-250 shines in anyhow. Especially when those 50grs are cranking at 3800+. In my experience the 22-250 falls apart after 400 yards due to the low B.C of the bullets without wind. With wind, it struggles past 300. Your overall result was stellar and I would feel plenty armed taking that out varminting.
I've been using suede bags for years & years......best way to go. I've bought and tried other rests with the plastic, rubber, & foam surfaces and they're horrible. Anything sticky or grippy is a bad idea......like the old MTM Predator rests for example. They'll grip the stock and if there's any torque or pressure on the stock in any lateral direction, at the shot, the gun will snap loose in that direction tossing it. Leather is a good alternative to suede if you use baby powder on them to coat them with. Anything with vinyl, plastic, or foam cradling surfaces.......no good
So I’ve got a question, to anybody who can answer it, so as everybody knows primers are pretty much near impossible to find recently I was lucky enough to pick up some large magnum pistol my question is if I just adjust my charge would it be safe to use those in 45 ACP 10 mm and 45 Long colt, also I had a friend give me 5000 wolf small magnum rifle primers would there be significant danger in putting those in 40 Cal 9 mm and 45 ACP with the small primer pocket
I wouldnt worry about subbing Magnum LP for regular LP, but I would probably look at trading 1k of those SRM for SP if your loading pistol. Just my opinion
Alright johnny.....i got a real brain learnin question for ya....i have just under 1000 rounds of wolf 100gn 6.5 grendel ammo that shoots like garbage through my 22" black rifle armory AR. It's a solid setup. Rilfe lenght buffer, heavy barrel....the works. I have 6.5 grendel brass, good powder, and 2 different weight hornady ELD projectiles but NO large rifle primers to be found anywhere! Can i empty out this steel case wolf and make a load with better powder and a better projectile using the factory berdan primer? And if yes, will the steel cases damage my die? Love your videos by the way brother.....learned a ton from you! God bless ya sir!
Note...... done this many times..... and found if I place the rifle butt into my shoulder tight.... my heart beat throws the shots off. Try timing your pulse.....see what happens. Better yet...dont place the rifle butt against your shoulder.
I'm surpised by this. I have a Ruger American Predator in 22-250 with a Vortex Crossfire 2 scope. All in was like $780. I shoot factory loads of Hornandy Varmint Express VMAX 55 gr around 1.25" groups at 200 yards. I was expecting one ragged hole in this video given your precision hand loads. I clean my gun after every shooting session....could be why maybe? I know it goes against the grain as it realtes to cleaning to much. But it wokrs and I have no reason to change anything.

have you tried coating projectiles in HBN powder before?
Hey Johnny could you do a cast bullet video with your mosin I am having a hard time finding data for loads.
Congrats on reaching 100,000 Subs Johnny. Please, please make an Elite Tactical Warfighter 2 video!! I need more training lol.
My favorite bullets in 223 rem. , but in 55g.
I’d like to see h380 and 55gr. Vmax. It’s a good combo nation in my .22-250
Should look into imr 8208xbr it's what I use in my 22-250 and have shot .50 moa groups
I don't have electronic set up for group could someone explain proper way to measure with calipers
Johnny, are you still streaming on Twitch? What nights if so?
Awesome video! I wouldn't be too awfully worried about SDs and ES with the 22-250 due to the speeds being so high. 50 FPS isn't going to matter in ranges that the 22-250 shines in anyhow. Especially when those 50grs are cranking at 3800+. In my experience the 22-250 falls apart after 400 yards due to the low B.C of the bullets without wind. With wind, it struggles past 300. Your overall result was stellar and I would feel plenty armed taking that out varminting.
What barrel are you using? And the scope? Great shooting!
Awesome video 👍
Is that a heavy barrel
@@paulharveu526 thanks for the advice I appreciate it
35.2 Imr3031 is a good powder with 55 vmax.
I want to see that 55 gun Gold Dot too.
Powered your bags....did you not watch erik cortinas video on grease on the stock......
I use that same bullet but i run R17. Works good in 2 rifles
Note...... done this many times..... and found if I place the rifle butt into my shoulder tight.... my heart beat throws the shots off. Try timing your pulse.....see what happens. Better yet...dont place the rifle butt against your shoulder.
Am I the only one missing JRB hitting & showing actual paper targets? 🤷♂️🤷♂️🤷♂️
I think a rail will sort of ruin the looks of the rifle. Will be interesting to see what setup you end up with.
