@@vandertop2 The first time I saw Gentle Giant @ The Palace, Albany they opened for Rennaissance. Love Rennaissance though I do, essentially Giant blew them off the stage. It's a beautiful thing. It's what we need more of.
btw, Ray Schulman IS the most under appreciated musician in all of prog rock, his writing and playing the most original angle on the entire genre. So good to see him, more bass players need to know about the insane funk meets Bartok (and guitar and violin) parts he composed.
I always say, Ray Shulman and John Weathers were one of the best rhythm sectors ever, because they made the most intricate, crazy-ass complicated pieces groove
Overused moniker but definitely performing and compositional genius. Lot of bass players are in awe. Most raised on radio types just don't get it. Always gratifying when I meet those who do. Altho' rare. Thanks.
I just burst into tears. "Wait a second, is that...did I just see..." At 2:08, for the first time in 40 years, the greatest prog band of all time was together again. Emotional doesn't even begin to say it!
It is an honor to be part of this tribute to one of the best and most brilliant bands in the world, thanks for being part of my life Gentle GIant, you still make my life happier and inspire many people to make music the way they like it, Thank you!
I have yet to find people around me who are as excited about GG as I am. Therefore it is such a joyful surprise for me to see so many dedicated musicians celebrating the genius of this unique band. Thank you so, so much everyone! You made my day (well, every day since I found this incredible video). You created an absolute jaw dropping piece of art!
I grew up listening almost exclusively to obscure music. In Denver, Colorado, USA, Gentle Giant definitely qualified as obscure. The internet has shown me, time and again, that I'm not alone and there are others who are fans of the weird ass stuff I listened to as a kid. God bless us, everyone! :-)
The tears are rolling down my face unstoppable. This is one the most amazing videos I have ever seen in my life. Having seen Gentle Giant in concert many times in 1976 and 1977, the circle of life is complete. Thank you to every single one of you who participated and made this happen. hmmm, GG come back one last time????
These " boys in the band" really deserve all the love from their fans around the world! I'm so happy to see Weathers on this screen! I'm so happy to share this song with so many Gentle Giant fans and see so many brazilian fans like me! Gentle Giant is really a band that makes music with passion and each one of us is able to feel it deeply inside us. Thank you Noah for your complex and delicate work! Thank you Ray for making this sound really good, amazing and warm! These times are not being easy... But this piece made my life great!! You guys are the best human beings in progressive rock! The legacy of Giant will be to awaken creativity and affection for music in people who allow themselves to appreciate all the Gentle work! FANTASTIC VIDEO!!
If the band happens to see this, I just wanted to let you know that you have fans who weren't even born when you broke up. I never thought I'd see The Boys performing together in my lifetime.
I keep watching this over and over, it is unbelievable when Derek Shulman begins singing, suddenly the voice is there and the rest of the band, amazing!!

Congratulations and thanks to all involved: the boys in the band, the cohort of supporting Shulmans and the immensely talented fans.
I know. What a truly remarkable band. When I stumbled on to this video, I thought "YES". I discovered them in the 1970's and have been a fan since. Have started re buying the albums. One of the all time great prog rock bands. Unfairly under rated. Deserve much better recognition and appreciation. mark
For anyone with an interest in the history of the band, there's a trio of fascinating podcasts of interviews with Phil by his son Damon and grandson Elliot. They cover the Shulmans' musical development from the earliest beginnings, through the formation of Simon Dupree and the Big Sound and the transition to Gentle Giant, and on to the reasons behind Phil's decision to leave the band: all fascinating (and priceless) stuff. They can be found on Damon's TH-cam channel: th-cam.com/users/DamonShulmanvideos (An added bonus for anyone seeking solace for the unlikelihood of any new GG material is the inclusion there of much of Damon's music. While not in any way secondhand pastiche GG, it unmistakably possesses many of those signature traits we've grown to love: quirky harmonic and rhythmic inventiveness and an ear for textural complexity as well as the sheer joy of technical virtuosity - albeit through a more contemporary prism. It's the work of a fiercely independent intelligence which honours the family tradition rather than exploiting it: Damon's clearly inherited his forbears' musical DNA right down to his fingertips (try 'When We Were', 'Forever' and 'Telead' for starters, maybe). Not only that, but he's passed it down to the next generation: the latest addition to the site is the EP 'Feeding Frenzy' by his band Replikin, which includes all three of his sons: 'Three Friends' isn't the only album featuring four Shulmans!)
A few years ago I started revisiting the music of my youth. Of course there was Yes, ELP, Floyd, PFM and then I remembered this quirky little album. I remembered, so wasn't surprised by, the devastating musicianship and audacious originality. What I wasn't ready for was the emotional impact. Within a few bars I had goosebumps chills and tears of joy, and by the end of the album I was a wreck! Thank you GG and thank you GG fans.
Tears in the eyes of one of the biggest Gentle Giant fans on earth! All members of Gentle Giant (except for Martin Smith who died in 1997) even some have health issues, their children, so many fans incuding Jakko Jakszyk and Billy Sherwood and then a song with some lines which match the present situation with Covid-19 ("The situation we are in at this time" / "Neither a good one, nor is it so unblest" / "It can change, it can stay the same")! Noah Shulman did a fantastic job on editing and so Ray Shulman on sound mixing. Thank you to all who were involved in the video!
Normally I don't comment TH-cam videos (maybe this is the first time), but what I just watched was a phenomenon that happens seldomly. The first time I listened to Gentle Giant was around early 2000s (I was born in 1982) and this changed my life forever. When I realized from where came the inspiration for bands and artists that I loved back there, like Spock's Beard, Echolyn, Steven Wilson, Kevin Gilbert, Sleepytime Gorilla Museum, Mike Keneally and so many others, this was mind-blowing. All the energy, counterpoints, intricate melodies and exquisite musicianship points back to Gentle Giant. Seeing that everyone in the band is doing stuff like this and doing well also made my mind blown again. Thank you so much Derek, Ray, Phil, Kerry, Gary, John, Malcolm and Martin for what you have done and have been doing to change people's lives through music. Hail to the power of the Gentle Giant! Day by day.
This cut is so full of JOY. Everyone on this does such a great job, but Derek's voice...man that hit me like an emotional jackhammer. I instantly knew that it was him. A damn vocal fingerprint. The equivalent of picking up a perfect '59 Les Paul. Aged like fine wine. More please.
Just when I was getting bored with life, and waiting for the autumn rains to raise the water level so that I could jump off the Roman bridge, along comes this video and makes me think: hey, let's give life another chance. Now where's me Strat?
I'm not sure which is more impressive: the players and playing, the video compilation/editing, or the original music. Every credit to everyone involved. I expect to see a raft of copyists....
My favourite band in my youth, all together again (...I know, well, kinda) A few spotted Derek 'cause he was highlighted, and John cause he pretty well looks the same as in GG days. Can't believe no one else has spotted ALL the surviving band members at [2:09] . Top line: Gary Green, Derek Shulman and Phil Shulman. Bottom line: Ray Shulman, Malcolm Mortimore, John Weathers and Kerry Minnear.
I believe the only former member that is no longer with us is the original drummer Martin Smith. Also, it's interesting that Phil is present because he was out of the band by the time this song was recorded although I suppose the same could be said about Malcom Mortimer but at least Malcolm has played with Three Friends.

@@ottmarsoulier7432 That is such a strange coincidence. Because Gentle Giant used that logo in 1970 but Weathers only joined the band in 1972. Maybe they already knew him? I dont know..? Or maybe he cut/shaved his hair/beard to look like the logo?

Astounding!! Derek's voice seems unchanged. Lovely to see Kerry and Ray play banjo, which was very original and unexpected. Gary is as precise and energetic as ever. And it was thrilling to spot Phil, Malcolm, John and Paul (Weathers and Mortimore, of course). Really got me goosebumps!!
Tears of joy here! Saw them 4 times in their heyday. To me always one of England's best prog bands and a shining example of what progressive rock is. Hail GG! And please...more.
I saw Gentle Giant one time they opened for Strawbs one of my favorite concerts of all time. Both were equally amazing. Ray's bass sound was stunning, the whole band was jaw dropping good. They were Progressive Rock at it's finest. I'm grinning from ear to ear watching this, BRAVO, STUPENDOUS, ENCORE
Wholly fuck that was AWESOME. Honestly it took me back to 1975 when I saw GG in Philly. I never knew so many like Gentle Giant , all this time I thought I was alone, Tankx everyone.
As a GG fan for over 45 - yes 45 years - what an incredible tribute to some of the greatest contemporary music ever composed. I saw GG in 1976 (Free Hand tour) and they absolutely blew me away. It was far and away the best gig i had (and have) ever experienced. As I've spent the last 45 years learning the bass lines - PLEEZE invite me to play on the next one. :)
Seeing Lee Pomeroy playing is so good. Wearing a Gentle Giant T-Shirt is awesome. Only a man with that good taste could be called to both play with Yes (replacing Chris Squire) and Jeff Lynne's ELO, playing a terrific bass!!! Congrats, Lee!!!!!
Also Lee Pomeroy already played with Three Friends the band of Gary Green. He knows all the music of Gentle Giant. Saw him twice. After Three Friends he joined Steve Hackett. You can find some clips here on TH-cam
@@ronniefarnsworth6465 Yes saw them too. He was amazing in Three Friends he seems to really enjoyed the music. He had a lot of fun playing the bass parts in the song Alucard.
C’mon guys, please just make an album. There is enough interest. Give the people what they want. You don’t even have to tour. The 21st century is ready for a new Gentle Giant album. Pretty please with a cherry on top?
Making an album is complex. The kind of album you're thinking of, anyway--the kind that builds communities and makes life a little easier to deal with. There are elements that have to do with time and place, and the people involved, beyond the baseline of work and schedule commitments.
Sentimenti di cuore grande e condoglianze alla famiglia Shulman e ai ragazzi della band. Pensando a te con gentilezza per sempre, Ray. Meraviglioso vedere il resto dei sostenitori di GG giocare insieme nel cyberspazio. Molta potenza! ❤
What fun, and what a great song. Thank you everyone for creating this. I'm fed up with hearing "Gentle Giant" and "Underated" in the same sentence. This activity can help address the disparity.
That brought me such joy; particularly how people of seemingly such disparate ages and backgrounds have been brought together by GG's music. Now who's the m#########n' #### of #### #### who disliked it?
The bearded man at 0:27 and more, is practically a clone of Derek's voice. There is no better way to honor the mighty Giant than this fusion of fans from all over the world. We all love you Ray.
Amazing! So glad to have found this gem! Gentle Giant has been on my musical radar since 1974. All Hail !!! You are all awesome! And I was happily surprised (and at the same time not) to see Rachel Flowers. She is great. Peace,
That is stunning! The best thing to happen throughout lockdown, no question. I haven’t smiled so much in months, and to see all the Giants singing together.... a maze zing. Want to read the behind the scenes story... I’m still grinning.
I can't stop watching this. When they disbanded 40 years ago, I kept looking for follow up material in other projects. Bands break up all the time, but talented bands usually morph into one or more new groups. And this band had talent to burn! If this is the last thing I see Gentle Giant do, I'll still be happy. But, please tell me there is a vault of music somewhere from any of the band that we haven't heard yet.
Sorry but no. Derek spent quite a bit of time as the successful (!) head of PolyGram signing Bon Jovi, Dream Theater and others. Way better than playing to a 40%-full Golders Green auditorium and losing money everywhere they went. Virtually zero chance for a reunion beyond the Three Friends project.
Have loved them for 47 years.... never thought I would see those faces together again... have tears in my eyes.... Thank you sooooo much for doing this, to all involved and of course to the amazing Boys in the Band. Putting it together and editing it would have been one hell of job so thank you Noah and Ray.
I have not been this happy in years.
Absolutely fucking gobsmacked.
Heartfelt thanks to all the artists.
Is that John Weathers using the same t-shirt he use 45 years ago? Wow!
Guess so... Weathers, fantastic drummer and actually his face was logo of the band, not?
@@ottmarsoulier7432 That is such a strange coincidence. Because Gentle Giant used that logo in 1970 but Weathers only joined the band in 1972. Maybe they already knew him? I dont know..? Or maybe he cut/shaved his hair/beard to look like the logo?
Sensational!!! Come back to and for us, Gentle Giant. Many in Brazil also love you!
If I'm ever in a bad mood, I pop this on. Humanity can be so beautiful when it wants to be
Not a single dislike so far (14.000 views). That's GG magic.
Now there is only 1 dislike
Now there are 2
Obviously it would show up a dislike right after your remark. That’s human kind.
This was the most amazing thing. I got goosebumps the whole time. And to see the guys there... Derek singing the just way he used to. Out of words.
Me Too!
Luv seeing GG being brought out of the closet and into the public eye after dormancy by an army of adoring, faithful fans.
It truly is a renaissance of appreciation for this amazing and unique band! 😍🎼🎵🎶🎧🎷🎸🎺🥁
Prog rock nerds. I could watch this all day.
Oh, it does my heart good to see John Weathers.
and sporting the classic A's uniform! That was amazing.
I wanna hug everyone involved in this!
I would like to found a country with all these people.
1:27 OMG Jakko Jakszyk A great man paying tribute to other great men!! I have goosebumps and i'm in tears!!!!
I’m kicking myself so hard for not just sending in a video
Right? This is the first I'm hearing about it and would totally have tried to make something happen. Still super cool though.
Seen this so many times now. Back for Ray. R.I.P Sir.
Best band ever. Nobody can touch this level of artistry.
Fantastic, amazing, incredible, perfect! Congratulations from Brazil! Obrigado Gentle Giant!
eu tb agradeço
I also thanks
Tears of joy here! Saw them 4 times in their heyday. To me always one of England's best prog bands and a shining example of what progressive rock is. Hail GG! And please...more.
Gentle Giant.... a band so bloody far ahead of their time the public still has another decade or two to catch on.
love it damm great what you said
TOTALLY AGREE!!!! Too good !!!!
Gentle Giant is underrated prog rock at its finest!
A beautiful tribute from the fans. Gentle Giant deserves it.
Got chills when derek sang! God i love this band
0:54, that man's voice sounds very similar to original... wait a minute...
I had the same reaction, then I realized all the band members are in this! Awesome!
As a Gentle Giant fan since 1971, let me “proclaim “ that Damn, that was so Gooood!!!!
Two Tours with Steve Hackett playing Genesis !! Progs best sessions player !! : D
Also Lee Pomeroy already played with Three Friends the band of Gary Green. He knows all the music of Gentle Giant. Saw him twice. After Three Friends he joined Steve Hackett. You can find some clips here on TH-cam
@@francoisrochette3808 He also played with Jon Anderson's version of Yes w/ Wakeman & Rabin !
@@ronniefarnsworth6465 Yes saw them too. He was amazing in Three Friends he seems to really enjoyed the music. He had a lot of fun playing the bass parts in the song Alucard.
This is the best thing I've seen on TH-cam in my entire life...
Maybe going a _bit_ far, but it is amazing.
@@Ndlanding Far for you is backyard for me!
Me too !
That was fabulous, thank you!
So great to see Rachel Flowers in there too - she's such a good player :-)
Lovely uking from Ray and Kerry - marvellous
She can play ELP better than ELP theirselves..
I come here every few months when I need to weep ❤🔥
C’mon guys, please just make an album. There is enough interest. Give the people what they want. You don’t even have to tour. The 21st century is ready for a new Gentle Giant album. Pretty please with a cherry on top?
Making an album is complex. The kind of album you're thinking of, anyway--the kind that builds communities and makes life a little easier to deal with. There are elements that have to do with time and place, and the people involved, beyond the baseline of work and schedule commitments.
Still the best band ever. Ray one of the coolest dudes on this planet.
The best group ever. Ho avuto la fortuna di assistere a un concerto dei Gentle Giant ad Amsterdam nel 1976.
I've been a fan of Gentle Giant since I was 12 years old and I'm 52 now. I loved them more than Yes or Genesis!
That brought me such joy; particularly how people of seemingly such disparate ages and backgrounds have been brought together by GG's music.
Now who's the m#########n' #### of #### #### who disliked it?
That's actually makes me cry....like some other bands as VDGG, King Crimson, Magma... totally unique!!!! real giants
The bearded man at 0:27 and more, is practically a clone of Derek's voice.
There is no better way to honor the mighty Giant than this fusion of fans from all over the world.
We all love you Ray.
Yes!
And yes.
Infinite appreciation and love for Ray.
Thats Derek.
Amazing! So glad to have found this gem! Gentle Giant has been on my musical radar since 1974. All Hail !!! You are all awesome! And I was happily surprised (and at the same time not) to see Rachel Flowers. She is great. Peace,
I found this in an art rock mix at the very bottom of my recommended when I scrolled all the way to the end of the mix.
Literally, a hidden gem.
Rachel Flowers should have a nice mention here as well,so I'll do it...nice job Rachel!
She's terrific
That is stunning! The best thing to happen throughout lockdown, no question. I haven’t smiled so much in months, and to see all the Giants singing together.... a maze zing. Want to read the behind the scenes story... I’m still grinning.
One of the best progressive Rock bands ever!
THE best. Simply.
And I can't believe Derek can sing like that after all these decades! Loved every single moment of it, thank you so very much.
Killer video ...so nice that the modern world recognizes the GREATEST PROG BAND EVER HANDS DOWN
Orgulloso de la participación de mis hijos Luis (Bajissta) y Jordy (Baterista) fans de Gentle Giant desde muy chicos de Mexicali,B.C. México
That was G R E A T ! ! ! ! YOU ARE ALL GIANTS!
May you CONTINUE and make more GIANT MUSIC!
May we become THE LAND OF THE GIANTS!
Despite actually being in this video, the coolest moment is still when Derek joins in ✌️
Just when you think you're too old to fall in love again. Gentle Giant.
God bless you, Pugwash. One of the best drummers ever and a big reason you had to see them live!!
