During those years I lived in a communist country - Romania - and you could only listen (and never watch) progressive rock groups like GG on banned radio stations like Free Europe. Very rarely one could get an album of "decadent" music groups. And I listened GG with eyes closed ... You cannot imagine my delight to watch now online concerts I only dreamed of during those times. Thank you Gentle Giant!

I've literally just heard this for the first time in my life, and play bass guitar in a band myself, I cannot stress just how accurate this statement is. They pushed the limits of what a band could do. Only records like Tarkus before them managed to do anything similar or technically as proficient.
@@ReadIcculus93 My favourite bands are Gentle Giant, ELP and Jethro Tull. The latter achieved similar precision on albums like A Passion Play or Songs From The Wood, while mostly being more melodic and less dissonant. I think their best drummer, Barrie Barlow, topped (everyone, including) Carl Palmer and John Weathers.
Zappa outshines that. Best concerts - Best 3 person - Hendrix, Best 4 person - RTF Honorable mention Leon Russell. Best concert - Zappa.
One of the greatest prog bands ever. God, this stuff is hard to play. Their rehearsals must have been meticulous. The music is, even in terms of progressive rock, extraordinarily original. So odd and weird, but it works. Never get tired of GG.

Bingo! All the Neo-prog bands I've listened to have the chops, but miss the heart. It's so much musical masturbation these days, all flash, no soul. GG composed and played with the story as the center of the song, and they consistently spun a great yarn.

It's like watching a cartoon Daddy Long Legs, and I mean that in a positive way... it's like he's got more than 2 arms and 2 legs. He's just so energetic and looks like he's having so much fun playing. GG's music is an acquired taste, no doubt, but there's so much amazing stuff going on that you keep coming back for more.

So Ray plays flawless bass, puts down the bass, Derek puts on guitar and Ray proceeds to play violin like it is his main instrument and then plays trumpet like that was his main instrument! The versatility of these guys is staggering.
I think Ray played violin in college! So sick man. These guys are the greatest.

I saw Gentle Giant open for Jethro Tull in 1973 in Rome, Italy, while they were playing Aqualung/Thick As a Brick. I don't remember the Tull show, but I became a Gentle Giant fan for life! And I was studying cello back then too!

Zappa, Tull, Yes, and Gentle Giant, '71. Added Neal Morse in '01. Even saw Pink Floyd open for the Nice. Saw Trini Lopez, Beach Boys, Warlocks and CTA all before '68. You weren't late to the party. Gentle Giant arrived too early. But there are a lot of people who didn't discover them until recently.
I am also an obsessive listener to the best band ever, Gentle Giant. By the way, Kerry Minnear is a genius.

Can you imagine the effect of those songs played back in 1970's? No you can't! It's not easy music and it wasn't. Not all people is able to appreciate the subtleties and intrincacies of their music, even now. They were far ahead of their time. Soft Machine is another group I love from that time. Out of this earth!
The craftmanship by which Gentle Giant turned their recorded music into versions which were fit for stage performance is still mindblowing.

Probably the most talented and least known of the 70's prog scene. The talent that flowed out of this band rivaled Zappa as far as I am concerned....Gentle Giant, the worlds most unsexy prog band ever...brilliant...

Of course Derek and Phil Shulman (who had left the band by then) were born in Glasgow in bonnie Scotland. Just back from Wales visiting John Weathers and his beautiful wife Carol last weekend, cool. Kerry and Ray, what musicians, enough said!
I'm from Brasil, and I was born in Rio de Janeiro, long, long time ago. When I was at my 13's, I discovered one radio station transmiting in FM (FM was pretty recent back in the day), and this station called Eldorado (or EldoPop for the supporters) and the set list was all about ProgRock and Hard Rock. And GG was very present , along with all the great bands from the late 60's and early 70"s. It was such a GREAT time to be alive. God bless these guys.

God these guys just rip . Love how they just completely created their own style and sound. It doesn't surprise me they were so overlooked though....the average joe could never get this stuff. They were on a different playing field compared to what else was going on at that time in popular music. 100% originality . Gotta love Ray Shulman's nostril flares though, and that vibraphone solo was vicious!

Neal Morse does a pretty good job. Playing different instruments - Neal Morse "Alive".
Shulman's bass and Weathers on drums provides for literally the most monstrous backbeat in music history. I could listen to this video 25 hours a day.
They were/are the greatest most epic legendary unique genius criminally underated band ever.
I will never tire of watching Gentle Giant and seeing their virtuosity. They are genius. Only the crowd disappoints. They look frozen.

I saw this show, only in Texas, not Belgium. Simply stunning. To this day, I've not personally seen a live band as tight, intricate and inventive as these guys. In a show built around several numbers from "The Power and The Glory", the bassist and percussionist really stole the show, as they are the ligament, the sinew that let the music stretch and then snap back into place while keeping it moving along. At the time, only King Crimson compared with their talent, though the sound was completely different.
Today, the only group that excites me like this is Hiromi's jazz trio.

In 1974 - a Sunday - I had switched the tele on (ZDF, second German channel) for a youth programme from 11 am to noon. I was just about to switch it off, because "Das ZDF-Sonntagskonzert" was almost always classical music. And I didn't much fancy classical music...when the announcer said on camera, "We are proud to present to you one of the leading rock bands in the world...". I thought, "What? Rock music? Certainly know them!" (after all, I was 14 years old and knew it all :-) ). "...Gentle Giant!" I drew a blank. Sat down and watched it...speechless! I knew "Yessongs" - but this was a whole different planet! Became a fan that day and have stayed for the rest of my life. After the show, I met two friends who walked their dogs every Sunday. We met and said simultaneously, "Did you just watch The Sunday Concert?! Bloody amazing!" So it was 3 life-long GG fans. And it's still my favourite GG concert...
The mercurial Gentle Giant at their very best LIVE , their performance of Funny Ways showcases musical dexterity the like few will have heard in nearly 50 years since this recording , pure genius never better exemplified by these amazing prog rock artisans .
I've been listening to GG since around 1985 and love them. But I was astounded again when I heard this concert and realised that they sound almost exactly like they do on the record. Such musicianship!
What a song So Sincere is!!!…that Drummer demeanor is amusing…I loved it the musicianship and they way they prog!
All I can say is......WOW! The band at the total height of their powers. Just incredible.
AHHH Gentle Giant, thanks to all those that love these guys as much as I do! We got to see them in Phoenix way back when, twice over several years. arguably the best live performance I had the privilege to see. The last time I saw them, was their last live performance, that from Derek Shulman's lips when we ran into him after the show. He was a total "gentle "man and was apologetic for their lackluster performance (his words) not mine. They were incredible as usual, but I could tell they were tired. Whenever I need a smile or a bit of inspiration I dial me up some Gentle Giant. Thanks for the posts! sorry to have been so much of a bore. Peace. Waler

I recently ' discovered ' Gentle after being a King Crimson fan since 1991.. I do not know why it took me so long, but GG is become my 'new' favorite band. Not only brilliant musicians but so full of rich melodies...amazing...
Still, I can understand the connnection from KC which brought you to GG. They both had an attitude of "What do you mean we keep lingering on a point? Let's take it further next time! " and both did so in their own individual ways.
I always considered them the Best Band you Never Heard.

This was broadcast as a so called Sontagsconzert"", every week on Sunday around noon, and was normally some classical music, I and my brother heard it back then, and loved it right away.
Every time I watch this concert it blows me away like the first time. Pure energy and coolness!😍

United Kingdom's crème de la crème avant-garde. So rich, so sophisticated, and yet so sublime, it's hard to describe with words. Hearing these virtuosos play gives the noun 'experience' a new meaning. They dared to trade commercial success for transcendentness. I'm thankful for that.

I first saw these guys on UK TV on a program called sight and sound in concert - it must have been in the mid 70s. I was gobsmacked then and they still astonish me now 50 years later. How they held it all together so perfectly is little short of miraculous.. they absolutely ROCK

I like prog because the mixture of hard rock and classical. The 70.s brought a wave of exploratory rock bands as King Krimson one of the first bands Greg Lake was in.. Yes , Pink Floyd, the Moody Blues , Procol Harum, Genesis, Gentle Giant, The Strawbs, Van der graff Generator , The Strawbs, Pavlov Dog, Triumvirat, Ice Castle Jethro Tull, Curved Air, and some Italian prog like PFM , El Orme , The New Trolls and El Banco to name a few but there are thousands out there. hope i have given you some new ones to listen to. You would not be a Richards of the Utah Family of Richards thats my moms side of family
The 60,s and seventies were hot with talent.. See you know many of the great bands . I will have to listen to some of the you mentioned like captain beyond Gods.. I am 61 born in Utah but lived most my life in California close to San Francisco. so saw many bands.

So you may be among the Richards family of Utah...Richards candy and Ice cream the legacy of Richards in Utah My my grand father was Paul RIchards and started the Memorial hospital in SLC of of 9th I have a cousin still living in SLC Clark Richards.... My aunt was Lenore Richards a great surgeon in SLC. Let me know if these names ring a bell?

"In a Glass House" is a masterpiece. Sounds just as good today as it did on the first day it was sold in stores. This is the band (if I had a pick) that I wish I could have played in. Although with my music expterise' they'd laugh me out of the town

@@mshioty It really depends on who's performing, but I agree that there were a lot of amazing bands in the 70's. There are some very impressive performances happening right now, but you have to dig a little bit. Hell, most people had to dig a little bit to find Gentle Giant. They're criminally underrated when compared to some of the other prog rock bands of the 70's, in my opinion.
All my life I´ve boasted myself as a prog expert and it wasn´t until last spring lockdown time that I discovered this gem of a band. I should be ashamed of my ignorance.....and I really am

They were very good musicians and deserve much more respect that they achieved during their time on the road.
The Rhodes piano intro in Proclamation is mesmerizing.Even when they sing out of pitch the sound is captivating. Love strange arrangements. Keeps you interested the whole time. 👍 Puts today’s music to shame. Completely formulaic and pathetic. Prog Rock is just a musical delight. Wish I were old enough to have seen them live.

I remember seeing them for the first time when they opened for Tull. When they broke into Knots, my friends and I couldn't believe they could pull those harmonies off live. They did and perfectly! They had the crowd in the palms of their hands. They played for 30 unforgettable minutes. Jethro who?

Must have been one the new shows in the 2000's...:)...It's crazy seeing some of the double billings we grew up with; Tull with Giant is real early 67-68? ...I believe I saw Ian tour with U.K as backup...U.K blew them away...Tickets were only like 11 bucks too...:)..
GG didn't exist in '68.
Ian had a lot of great bands open for them. Same complement for Kiss (didn't like them much) but it's the big band that opens the door to GG (Tull) and Rush (Kiss).
Jethro Tull reportedly sued their management for having put GG as an opening act to their tour. The audience reaction was stellar to GG, so Anderson got mad.
It is all so incredible, but Experience is my favorite, master inner voices, making any choices 🎵🎶

Probably the most technically phenomenal prog. rock band of all time. This is live and almost impossible to pull off so cleanly, but they did it and more!
AMZ Anderson (Tull) Neal Morse, Zappa Zappa was the most technical by far. But even Zappa interviewed and said that GG is one of the very few bands that are outside of the box.
Zappa has them beat. Really beat. But "BEAT" is performing this Sep in Austin. I have my tickets. Steve Vai, Adrian Belew, Tony Levin and a drummer.
