West Midlands rides crews of 2 on pick up trucks. Sometime for property fires there is 3 pick up trucks, hylux type riding 2. Then a PRL riding 3 or 4 So they get a magic number of 8 personnel😮.
What about the additional resources that would be sent when it was made a property fire? Any Preplan is about the risk it presents. Tac-Vent - 8 etc. Base it on resources (people needed), not 'pumps' numbers etc.
Why have things gone backwards........H & S E must get involved as its requirement for the the employer to provide safe systems of work....... ie 5 crew on a one pump station, and 5 and 4 on a two pump station, .Everything that was discussed in the video was in place once. Why is no longer there!!!!
"In some circumstances." So just send a pump with three on and hope for those exact circumstances? Alternatively, send an adequately crewed appliance that can deal with these circumstances and others! Not complicated, really.
Did you watch the video?? The job has escalated before they got there. 🙄 like many jobs do. Of course three people “COULD” deal with a car fire. However crewing three people on an appliance for all eventualities is dangerous. An appliance ridership is determined for the duration of a shift not for each job they are called to.
This was normal in the 90s when we actually went to and delt with fires. Bigger issue is so many stations off the run . Yes you have to balance firefighter safety but when 60% or more of a brigades stations are off the run because they are crew deficient. It's ridiculous when a station is unavailable with a crew of 5 because there BA deficient and not turned out to an RTC 500 yards from the station. House fire a crew of 3 can put a ladder up to a window and save a life. I know I've done it or wait 20 minutes plus for next available crew and the person dies or PC plod or public have a go. Ideal world all crews should have 5 but that not realistic when stations are so short .
When was in the Pump was not allowed to move till at least 4 firefighters on it.

5 or min of 4 but 3 no way ever, simply not safe and should be illegal.

There are several issues here not black and white. In some circumstances three could have dealt with the car fire and prevented escalation 🤔

Sending out trucks with any less than 5 is a race to the bottom.

As a good friend of mine, who is in the fire service, says “plan for the worst, hope for the best”
