Less than a month later, I can finally say that switching to a safety razor was the best decision I’ve ever made. I haven’t had anymore ingrown hairs and irritation that I often struggled with when I used to use cartridge razors. It’s made shaving a pleasant morning ritual for me. I just purchased the King C Gillette razor from Walgreens and I can’t wait to see how it goes using it

Same! King C was my first choice for starting out. I irritated the heck outta my neck but it’s only been two shaves so far so I know I’ll get the hang of it eventually.

I've been doing it for just shy of a month now and I'm finally getting some good shaves. It's all in the technique

    • @Lasombra08
      @Lasombra08 4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

Sure, and prep and finding the right razor and blade for your beard. Most of it is YMMV.
When I started shaving all I ever heard was "buy the Merkur 34C, buy Personna Blues yadayadayada", so I did and I nearly quit DE shaving after the first five shaves, 'cause it was messy, tuggy and not close at all, even after 3+ passes. And the razor burn, sweet Lord have mercy.
And you know what? It wasn't just technique; neither the razor nor the blades were for me. I didn't know it at the time, but what my beard needed were all those scary aggressive razors everyone talked about in hushed voices. Had I known aggressive meant efficient, I would have tried them sooner and I would have been happy with my shaving experiences much earlier. 😄

Started in the DE world 5 years ago. The bald guy from pawn stars ran an add for a DE kit @ Walmart. No looking back! The razor came with Vanderhagen Blades and a puck of soap...Fastforward. I inherited a Gillette Fatboy which was heavier and experimented with a variety pack of blades. Today in my evolution I am using a Merkhur Slant, (Sledgehammer) 100 pack of Shark blades, and the Arko Stick. Love the lather and pricepoint of the Arko stick. One thing I love about the DE world is the VARIETY! I wish I knew about the DE when I was in the Army and had to shave everyday. Enjoy your videos!BOTTOM LINE: Cartridge razors are a RIPOFF. I just wanted to say thank you. About three weeks ago a younger fellow that I work with heard some of us older guys talking about our favorite razors, mugs, soaps, brushes and the like. And a little later he came over to me and ask how to get started in DE shaving. The next day I took him a few things to help him get started, a Merkur 34c, an Old Spice mug and a brush. I suggested he go on TH-cam and watch some videos on getting started, and so he did. Last night he brought back every thing to me and told me he didn't want anything to do with it and thanks but no thanks. After talking to him for a bit it turned out that he had been watching Ken Surfs this guy was talking about cutting and nicking himself in every video to the point that it scared this young fellow. Anyway I got him to watch your videos along with Kevy Shaves and Friendship Shaving and now he's ready to give it a shot. Thank you for your help.

I've been jotting notes for the few moments that you give advice, but this was packed (and in such a short time) brilliant for a beginners. I've been trying to get my friends off of the cartridge band wagon for years now -- kind of just for the money saving, but it'd also be nice to have some people to talk to about the art of shaving -- think i'm going to send them this video. I first started to shave with a safety razor in August, 2013 at 20, and I have to say 7 years later I do not look back at cartridge razors at all. I used to get terrible shaves and randomly found the world of wetshaving by accident in one of Mantic59's videos on TH-cam. I like to pamper myself from time to time, but I also like to keep it simple for the most part. I have only one vintage safety razor, a year's supply of blades of my choice, a shaving brush, a shaving soap stick (I prefer to lather directly on face than in a bowl, too), and some aftershaves (lotions and balms). I hate to say it, but one of my favorites is the original Aqua Velva blue. I can't go wrong with a nice sting and a cooling sensation afterward.
I watched some of your videos over the years, and I actually just revisited your channel recently. Keep it up, and I enjoy the shave videos.

Recently I have been using Barbasol more often since I just graduated from college and I know I'll have a job and will probably need to shave everyday. The brushes and soaps are great but they take way too much time. I would say that Barbasol gives me the best shaves. I just used that, my Fatboy, and Aqua Velva and I was super happy! My grandpa shaved everyday with a safety razor and he used the canned stuff. I agree that you don't need to be fancy at all.

Jim, There are several brands of no brush creams that come in tubes like large toothpaste containers. These are popular in Europe, and are inexpensive online. Kiss My Face makes a very slick no brush cream in a hand pump container which is very economical. Any of these options will provide more cushion and glide than the canned stuff, at a lower cost per use.
Personally, I prefer a shave stick, Palmolive, and a brush for face lathering. Yes, it takes a couple of minutes to work the lather up. If you use a synthetic brush, then there is no need to soak the brush. IMO, this soap provides everything that is needed. It is tallow based. It smells like soap.

Yep its what makes a dry shave possible. However some products will buy a bit of forgiveness for less than flawless technique when ya go to wet shave the levels varry greatly from item to item if buying for a beginner I'd probably send them a P.A.A starter kit with alum block and/or styptic pencil if going cheap either arko or dollar tree shave gel or cream a micro touch butterfly razor and a middle of the road blade like voskhod or silver star if going all out well I'd toss in a The Cube pre shave soap and john frum mysterium serum with the starter kit alum and styptic

I just bought my first safety razor(Merkur Fetur), and tried it out today for the first time, and it was the worse experience ever! It was so dull, it got cought up in my hair, and it was bouncing over my skin. I started out at number one, and worked my way up to 6, but it was no difference. I used a Derby Extra blade in it, and then I changed it out for a really sharp Feather, but it was just the same. I had to go over the same area over and over again......while with my old Gillette Mach 3, its so i easy.....it just glides over the skin, and Im smooth as a baby. I also bought some Taylor of Old Bond Street Sandalwood, and o boy how that sucked! It dried out almost instantly.....I had to ad water all the time, for it to not dry out. The Gillette with regular shaving foam is 100 times better. What a waste of money!

Do you have different shaves for different occasions? Like for example when I shave for school, I just do a regular quick can of foam and mostly 1, maybe 2 passes. But then when I shave for visiting people, I get the brush, soap, do 3 passes, the whole shebang

    What's up Sinatra !!!!
The only reason to use a safety razor is simple because it is the only way to shave well, because my grandfather used it, my father used it, because shaving was something distinctive of a very manly man, with a sharp blade and not with garbage plastic like today, so listen to your elders since they know what they are talking about, previously things were made to last because they were built for tough guys, now everything is disposable.
    Cheers ⚔️💯👍🏻⚔️💯⚔️

Great video, man. I have started using DEs again after a few years of trying to grow a beard. I am still learning and can't really understand going with the grain/ against it and so on. If you can make a video on how you decide on which way to go and Which way to not go it would be amazingly helpful. Thanks for the vids!

Feel your face to understand grain its the way the hair points with will feel smooth against will feel like sandpaper for me its a down then an up stroke in half with increments yea i doubble tap the first line before sweeping up and down half a razor width at a time for cheeks and neck on a primary pass. the chin and under the nose special I save for last and it boils down to any witch way ya can there . second pass lather up ear to jaw passes half width passes starting at sideburns working step down per pass till base of neck . feel face do optional touch up pass check his old videos he gots tons of them look up j hooking the gellette slide and buffing

Another way to learn the direction of whisker growth is to let it grow out. Very few men have whiskers that all grow the same direction. Three passes is also about whisker reduction, each pass gets closer and closer to B.B.S.

Kagan, Mapping the face was the key for me in getting a DE shave without irritation or weepers. There are many different ways to go about this. Here is my wacky suggestion. Take a playing card and run the edge of it over your face at a 30 degree angle with 1-2 days growth. When you are going against the grain, the hair will stop the card. With the grain the card will slide. You can use a credit card or a business card alternately.
Once you have your map clear in your mind's eye; life gets easier. Most people go with the grain on the first pass. If you are a beginner or lazy like me, I suggest a two pass shave; 1st pass with the grain, 2nd pass across the grain. Later, you might want to try taking that 2nd pass against the grain. This should get you a more refined result, assuming the blade/razor combination is a good fit for your beard/skin.
Some people like to do a 3 pass shave. This is typically done with the 1st pass with the grain. The second and third passes can be 2. across the grain and 3. across the grain from the other direction; OR 2. across the grain and 3. against the grain. Whatever works for you!
Most people do some pickup (cleanup) as a final step. This is done based upon the feedback that you get when you run your hands over your face.
There are two kinds of shavers; those who pursue a BBS (baby butt smooth) shave; and those who pursue a DFS (a damn fine shave). A BBS makes sense for a hot date or significant occasion. For a daily go to work shave, a DFS is a more realistic goal, IMO.

Yes you should, you get less razor bumps if your skin is prone to them. Multi blade razors aren't great for preventing them.

What converted me to the traditional safety razor? I got laid off at the beginning of the Great Recession in 2008. I needed to seriously start thinking about saving as much money as possible. I read an article in Forbes that discussed how to save $150,000 over the course of your life by following ten suggestions. The biggest one was to never buy a new car. The smallest one was to always brew your own coffee. As a sidebar for men, it advised to shave with either a safety razor or a straight razor. I chose the safety razor and haven’t looked back! Shave the way Truman, Ike, and JFK did!

Me, talking to myself in the bathroom mirror: "I took a shower and did my hair."
My wife, on the other side of the door, in the bedroom: "Who are you talking to?"
    Me: "No one."
    Her: "Mmm, okay..."
Me: "Today, I'm going with a tallow-based shaving cream..."
    Her: "What?"
    Me: "Nothing."
Me. "And, for the brush, I'll be using this synthetic one. Let's get lathering."
Her: "What on earth is going on with you?"
    Me: "I'm fine."
    Me: "Clear the runways!"
Her: "Do I need to call your doctor?"

Tja, puh... Although I love the DE razor from time to time, I think that electric razors are the best that has happened in the world of shaving. Fast shave, no worry of getting nicks or cuts, as close as a multipass shave with a DE razor (if you buy the correct one for your beard type). For me it is: Simple shaves are done with the electric razor and once or twice per week, I am fancy and use a DE razor with a nice brush and a nice soap and I take my time 😂.
