    Buddy, I have to thank you. I discovered your videos about 3 or 4 weeks ago and since then I left the dark side and moved to the world of safety razors. Wow! What an eye opener this has been. There was a small learning curve the first couple of shaves getting the right angle and technique down but my face/beard is so thankful. Where shaving was a chore before it’s now something i look forward to and enjoy. Thanks sir!!!

    Very cool hearing about your family history and the LBJ Ranch. And the Astras are definitely an awesome deal, both cheaper and easier on my skin than the Feathers, while still being plenty sharp enough.

    I started wet shaving with the Derby blades. Then switched to Astra. I used them for a few months until I tried a variety pack or 2. Ultimately I settled on the Feather blades as my daily choice. The Astra blades are a little softer on the skin, but if you have thick beard hair like me, they pull the hair too much before cutting. After trying 25 different blades, these are my favourite in order. 1)Feather 2) Silver Blue 3) BIC Platinum. Dropped off 90 Derby blades that I will never use at Goodwill. If you haven't tried the BIC you should.

    Switched from Feathers in my 1950s Gillette Tech to Gillette Silver Blues, and I'm never looking back! Huge difference in comfort and a dramatic lack of irritation. Been trying out the Bic Chrome Platinums lately too and it seems to be the same way with them. Love 'em

      Feathers are great and undoubtedly sharp. But ever so slightly 'burny' afterwards on my skin. Found Astras and Derby Premium blacks both way smoother and damn sharp. Recently tried Silver Blues and must say I am impressed. A smooth shave yet more aggressive than Derby Extra - which is a big plus point.

    Astra SP blades with Proraso green soap, along with a Merkur 34C and a simple The Body Shop synthetic brush was my initial wet shaving setup when I started a little under 2 years ago. Good stuff!

    Astra green are well regarded across the DE shaving world. I find they are not nearly as sharp as Feather, but that can be a good thing, especially for people just starting out. I use them in my Merkur Progress with great results.

  • @richarddick1980

    After a year of shaving my personal batlle was between Astra Green and BIC in my 89EJ razor. They both smooth for me, though many consider them as very sharp and agressive blades. After one month of hard competitive battle BIC won! Cause Astra blades shave a little extra derma from my face and my skin start to begin drier. + BIC are even chipper and I get similar sharpness after 3-5 shaves. I really found BIC surprisingly smooth for my skin without irritation or cuts, red spots or whatever. 100 blades of BIC less for 10 dollars and I'll be good for a year.
    By the way, Astra are "Russian" blades, manufactered in my hometown in St. Petersburg and BIC are from Greece. BUT! Astra is not for common sale in stores and I gotta buy them as imported "fancy" ones. I find that... a little dissapointing.

    The Astra works great with my 6S. Another blade that shaves great is the Gillette Nacet. It's a bit sharper than the Astra and has become my favorite. One thing I've discovered with the Nacet is that it holds its edge better than the Feather. I don't think there's a major difference but it was noticeable...for me. I can get 6 great shaves with the Nacet but only about 3-4 with the Feather. Of course, like everything with wet shaving, YMMV! As you discovered, the price per 100 for Astra (and Nacet) is much less than Feather blades. BTW, great shave with Grandpa Grundgy!

    • @muzicsean76
      @muzicsean76 2 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      I also have Nacet,Astra SP's,Bic Chrome and Feather blades. Nacet is my daily driver nearly as good as Feather blades but more durable. Astra SP's are the dullest out of the four and they also give me a little irritation it may be the coating on the blade who knows. YMMV.

    • @BartBuzz
      @BartBuzz 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@muzicsean76 My go-to blades are Nacet, Astra, and Filoso...in that order. I still have blades from a sample pack (including some Feathers) that I bought a couple of years ago. I'll throw one of those in the mix just to get rid of them. I've seen comments from others that the Astra gives them skin irritation. I've never had that issue. Maybe a pre-shave would help when you use an Astra?

    Hey, hey! My birthday is 24 August! So, happy birthday to you, my friend.
    My favorite blade is the Feather, too. I've been going through PAA's Platinum Strangelet Super Sharps blades (two boxes of 5). They're fine. And that's what I feel about most other blades -- they're fine. If I have a choice between Feather and any other, I would always choose Feather. But, yeah, that price for Astra can't hardly been beat.

    Hey, youtube just randomly showed me this video after using my last feather blade, with astra coming up next 😂 Love it!
    About school, dyscalculia and not being able to push yourself to do The Thing(tm) that needs doing but is no fun to do. Please don’t take this as medical advice or anything, but: the way you talk (which I love) and what you tell about your little one just screams adhd to me. If you haven’t thought about that yet, maybe it’s a thing you might like to spend a few thoughts on. It runs in families and *if* it’s adhd (which your dyscalculia that you mentioned makes it a little more likely actually) getting a diagnosis and therapeutical and/or medical support can make your life and that of your son (and the whole family) a lot more manageable.
    Sorry if this comes off as overstepping and of course, it’s random unsolicited advise from a stranger on the other side of the planet. It’s just that the pattern (how and what you talk about) just yells at me (fellow adhd‘er with probably huge confirmation bias myself).
    I‘ll shut up now but feel free to get back at me if you have any questions or ignore me if I was overstepping 😅

    Barbershops are using ASTRA instead of FEATURE because they use one DE per customer, so they save money in a long run , but at home it is not a matter of hygiene and we use several shaves per blade . So the blade that stays sharp longer is a virtue.

Love the Astra green in my 99R and for the cost I could use a new blade every shave and still be cheaper than the feather! But the feather rocks IMHO. I paid 20$ CND for 200 Astra's and 80$ CND for 200 feather's. The other Astra is blue and it's a quality stainless steel where the Green is a premium platinum blade. I haven't tried the blues and won't for the price of the greens!

    Went back to my Personna Blue (Made In USA) which have been my go-to blades always. I did try the ASTRA Platinum and really liked them, so I picked up 3 x 100 packs on Amazon for $24.00. I also have 4 x 100 of the Personna Comfort Coated Blue (USA) blades from my kids at Christmas. So I’m good for a long while on blades… and I’ll be shaving with Personna & Astra blades.
    My kids also got me two of the new Barbersol 1919 After Shave Balms and one Cremo Aftershave Balm (seen that stuff in one of your videos) and some Shave Soaps… and my wife got me a beautiful 1959 Gillette Fatboy! It’s in like barely used condition… she got it at a flee market for $50.00!
    Hope you had a wonderful Christmas, and I hope your wife is recovering well.

    I've tried about 20 different razor blades, but this is the only one that wants to KILL me every time. I very rarely cut myself with it, but my face always burns, hurts, reddens and gets a rash during and after shaving. With mild, aggressive, adjustable or slant razor alike. Everyone else says it's a TOP3 blade, one of the best, but not for my face for sure. I live in a low-income and expensive country, but even Feather blades are dirt cheap compared to disposable razors, so I'd rather not torture myself with the green Astra.

    Our elementary schools here in New Brunswick Canada don’t have homework either! I thought for sure there was homework when I was a kid.
    I’m a fan of feather blades too. I put them in my Rockwell. I found astra to not cut as nicely.

    Crazy's good appart from the stool sample😂😂😂, anyhow I've started shaving with a wilkinsonsword shavette last week with derby single blade not great took three passes so tonight I'm going to try it with the wilkinson sword blade which are very good with a safety razor so should do the job with a shavette I hope.

    Hands down my favorite blade brand! Sharp, smooth shaves, highly affordable, and long-lasting! Average blade life is 4-6 shaves, Astra SPs give 7-10! So you definitely are in for a treat! The Astras aren't as sharp as the Feathers (I don't think anything is), but they deliver a nice smooth shave and they're quite forgiving on the skin, which is what I look for to go on my sensitive face.
    Now, I did get a hundred-count pack of PAA's Platinum Strangelet blades, and let me tell you, they are fantastic. Douglas wanted something that combined the best of Feather and Voskhod, and he succeeded there! Wouldn't mind seeing your evaluation of them. I find that, for ME, medium and milder razors are best used for the blade. Maybe you'll have a different experience.

    • @robbieedwards1456
      @robbieedwards1456 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      I've found quite the opposite to be true, I find strangelets to be very much on the dull side. I agree with Matt from razor emporium who ranks them near the very bottom of sharpness scale in his video. Plus I don't like that they're made in China

    • @TheWilkReport
      @TheWilkReport 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@robbieedwards1456 Hmm...are you sure you didn't simply get a bad blade? I've used a couple of tucks now and had the same result: generally quite sharp, though not as forgiving as the Astras or as long-lasting. I typically get four, maybe five shaves from them before swapping out the blades.
      I don't get the hatred of China and Chinese-made goods. If it's that U.S. companies outsource jobs there, that's hardly China's fault. Take it up with U.S. C.E.O.s and demand they open factories back up here. Boycott their goods until they cave. Get your representatives to use carrot-and-stick laws to incentivize corporations to open factories here in the U.S., pay workers decent wages, and maintain safe working conditions. Why complain about China?

    • @robbieedwards1456
      @robbieedwards1456 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@TheWilkReport well the issues are one and the same really. I like American made products so I buy them when I can, but I realize I can't do that all the time. There are plenty of reasons to despise China these days, but I'll not go into them heavily here. So if I must buy a product made in another country, China is going to be my last choice. I don't like when companies outsource to China for super cheap costs and to cut corners. I also think the quality is usually worse too. Note that I like Japanese blades, but I haven't had a single good blade from China. I think I've been fairly objective when looking at the stranglets. I tried an entire tuck someone gave me, and they all tugged pretty bad and didn't feel very smooth. I would never feel comfortable doing multiple passes with them

    Astra's were the first blades I used and still have some out of 100 for $8.50!! Feathers are too sharp for my face too many nics. I've read some reviews from old-timers that have been using Astra's greens for decades. Another great video and stories.

    Neutron 🪒🪒 Nice shave. Give this a try: between passes rinse face with semi hot water, re-lather, then rinse the razor with cold water, shave, rinsing razor with cold water as necessary. Something about the thermal reaction of cold steel on warm/hot skin causes the hair follicle to excite and the hair stands out for efficient cutting....dermatologist recommendation...

    Great video! A few things I thought while watching-
    Proraso has a blue line in the tube
    I guess it's red, white, and green for the flag and blue for their national soccer team
    Astra has a blue package for their superior stainless
    The research shows zero benefit to homework. Some researchers show a negative effect. Plus it hardly seems fair to make kids go to school all day and do multiple hours at home. I wouldn't choose a job like that.

    Hey there Brian, greetings! Might I suggest an idea? Take 2 fatboys, load one up with a Feather and load the other with an Astra. Then shave left side of your face with one and the right with the other. Maybe that will give a better head-to-head comparison?
    To me, Astra SP is just slightly less sharp and slightly more smooth than the Feather. Both are great, love 'em!

    My mom used to be a teacher, and she said that schools that assign no homework are more common than they used to be. She said it was because the students apparently performed better in those cases (take that with a grain of salt if you want), and it leaves more time to cover more material in class since they don't have to spend time going over the right answers.

    I like feathers because of the plastic case with the drop disposal pocket in the back, for when I travel. Although Feather blades seem to give me irritation sometimes, maybe they’re so sharp that I go too fast with them? Could just be the Merkur I use in my travel bag. What I prefer everyday for home use though is Dorco blades, the paper packaging makes me feel better for not buying plastic too

    "Four shaves out of each one", as you spoke about blades and usage. As some people say, Blades are Cheap. But then if you know you can or know how to get MORE than just 4 shaves from a blade, then they are yet even cheaper! You can find out how your Feather and your Astra compare, if you would push them that far to see.

  • @kwl189

    So there is Astra SP and Astra Green. Even Astra blue. Proraso don't make hard soaps. They are croaps. Creams that are dried to make a firm body. They do a blue range which is protective in the tubes they make so I'm not sure that they are coloured for the Italian flag tbh. They are normally cheap and widely available but they're not the best for slickness or post shave feel. Artisan soaps are well clear above them. TOBs is better tbh and not much more and arguably better value for money. I'm using my supplies up and moving on. The sensitive range is the best I think.
