Chances are the situation was too far gone. But it's better to know for fact than to assume and maybe abandon an opportunity to save a life. Don't have to be military to feel that. Just have to be a decent human being.
Theres a major chance the fire was small when they saw it happen and the only reason they died was because it took longer for another person to report the crash(Op and ex didnt even call the cops on the road) and then even longer for a fire truck. Op saw smoke, not any flames. Ive seen a flaming car crash on the highway, you see the fire and smoke a ways off. We didnt report it cuz we could hear the emergency vehicles in the distance behind us. It was also on the otherside of the divide and we could feel across a five lane highway
No decent human would feel good after that. It’s always the right thing to see if you even CAN help. In fact, just two days ago, I went with my family to get ice cream at this awesome little shack outside the next town over, and as we were driving home, we saw a man flip his quad in the ditch. Mom turned around and she, my sister, and I all jumped out to help while Dad stayed with the dog and ice cream. Another guy right behind us stopped, too. He was fine, and the quad was in a spot where we couldn’t flip it over so we weren’t any help, but damn it, of course we were gonna try!!
Story 3: “then her parents show up” Naw mate, at that point it’s time to RUN. So many red flags, I dunno how OP managed to sit there through that date, gentleman or not, it’s time to say “no” and RUN op. Get your sneakers on and RUUUNNNNN. That cop was a TRUE bro, he understood you needed to escape and he helped you out, what an absolute BRO.
If the genders were reversed, OP probably would have "went to the bathroom" and ghosted as soon as the parents showed up. I feel like men need to learn a few of the safety tips drilled onto women in their early teens. For their own safety.
I once met a psychiatrist with severe anger management issues. He flipped out when my dad asked him if was related to Aleister Crowley. When you share a last name that isn't that common with someone well known, you're going to get asked. Story 2: If I were OP, I would've ignored my wife and went to help anyway, even if she yells at me, some help is better than late/no help honestly. I don’t think that disqualifies you. If she’s committed WHILE she works there, maybe it would cost her job. If the commits happened _prior_ to working there, that just means she has the experience to relate to her patients. It’s like my therapist who specializes in PTSD from child abuse because she has it too. It really allows for “I know what it’s like, I’ve been there, and I can tell you with certainty that it gets better, I am living proof.”
I got nicked in the sack with an electric razor once. It didn't bled profusely like OPs, just a drop of blood, but from that point onward I no longer shave, only short trim.
Last story: OP shouldn't feel too bad. The exact same thing happened at Pixar back in the day. Yes, *that* Pixar. They were working on Toy Story 2 - which, for context, they were already under a serious time crunch to make, because if they didn't meet the deadline, Disney was gonna turn it into a bad straight-to-video sequel. When one day, about 2/3 through production, somebody accidentally pressed the "delete all" key. Pretty much the entire movie was gone, and because everyone's computers were connected to the same network, no one could recover it. Their saving grace was a woman on maternity leave who had taken her work computer home with her. They called her and had a few people help transport her gigantic 90s computer from her home to the studio, and then upload the files from her computer onto the network.
I was helping add data to a file and corrupted it. Thankfully the system did nightly backups and only that day's work was lost. The owner of the file had been working on it for years.
Our system administrator did the exact same mistake one afternoon after we all went out for lunch together to celebrate one a staff member's birthday. He was a German guy who thought one little beer wouldn't affect him. Ooops!

Second story: if you find yourself in a similar situation and can help, just do it. If someone is whinging at you and are being selfish, ignore them. In saying that, saving anyone from an aviation related crash is very dangerous, and a helicopter will drop like a rock especially at low altitude with no lift, so don’t blame yourself OP, it’s very likely they died immediately upon impact. In general however if you see someone needs help, and you can safely help, don’t be a bystander, and if there’s folk around tell them to phone 911/999 (or whatever your countries emergency number is), get folk to help you out, a lot of the time bystanders are too scared to make the first move in assisting someone but will help if you ask them. I’ve helped plenty injured people, a woman in distress during a DV incident shouting down my road (a jogger, my neighbour and myself protected her from her ex and belittled him to the point he almost cried, he called me “mean”, that’s my badge of honour), a man who fell and became unconscious and folk ignored him because “he’s probably drunk” (SO?!?), so if you’re able to help and it’s safe, then help a fellow human out. Doesn’t have to be a grand gesture or huge heroics. But for OP especially in this story, there was nothing you could do, maybe phoning emergency services but considering how dangerous aviation crashes/fires are, you could’ve easily lost your own life from helping. You’re not the reason they’re dead, but I understand guilt isn’t that easy to get rid of. Thankfully you did divorce your monstrous ex who viewed an accident as an inconvenience and apparently has zero empathy, so I’m glad you got rid of her OP. Would definitely recommend therapy as you’re not at fault here and talking to a therapist would massively help you out. Also to answer rSlash, helicopters and planes use kerosene, fire extinguisher wouldn’t have done anything.
However the fire extinguisher might have given enough time to keep them from burning, so they could be removed from the wreck. After all jet fuel takes a lot to start burning, even if it burning is going to be hot enough to soften steel, and also light aluminium on fire. Those first minutes are often the difference between being badly injured, or dead in a gruesome way. Yes have seen the aftermath, and the use of all the fire extinguishers in the area, around 30 of them, kept the fire from growing to destroy this fully fuelled, and fully armed, aircraft. The fire department was 5 minutes in getting there, and they just had to cool down the damage, and wash the smoke and powder away.
My thought too, heavy fuels have a lot of energy but take a lot of energy to ignite. Using the extinguisher in ops story might have been the difference between extricating those people alive and the actual result.
I was in the car with my mom and sister going to a family's home for dinner. My mom and sis saw the crash in the next lane, I heard and saw the aftermath. It was 3 cars. The middle one was hit so hard that it hit the car in front of them. I heard a terrifying scream and rushed out the door and went to the middle car. I saw a car seat and was thankful no kid was in it. The female driver was in agony from her (I think it was the left) leg, it looked broken. There was smoke coming out of the engine (no fire, thank God, but I didn't want her to stay in incase there were) , so me and a couple of people pulled her out and towards my mom's car since it was closer. I was the only one helping her in between other bystanders, but they had to go (understandable since we were on a parkway). The lady understood English but when you're in a traumatic state, you just go by your first language. I called 2 friends who spoke Spanish to help translate so that I could help her as much as I could. My mom and sister were talking to the other driver that started it. She was crying. I think she was a new driver at the time. I forgot what she did, but she was very apologetic. The firefighters and ambulance came, the police didn't show up at all, probably later tho. The EMTs took the woman into the ambulance. My family and I were able to leave. Once we were away from the scene, my composure cracked and I broke down the whole way to the house. My family was proud of me but understood it was a lot. My mom and sister were just talking to the girl and the firefighters. The first car in front that got hit was mad but ok.
I sympathize with the guy from story 3. Being female, on his shoes, these flags would almost certainly be a death sentence. So, pumpkin would literally be the death of me had I been in OP's shoes, and the genders were reversed.
Story 3: What an absolute train wreck! There are SO MANY things he could have done to end it during the date. Like, after her parents mentioned that they had committed her before, let them know that this was a first date and he barely knew her and that whatever she’s told them about him she made up. That would have tipped the parents off that their daughter was losing touch with reality again. Well, hopefully, anyway. The parents seem to be putting on rose-colored glasses atm. But, yeah, the alarm bells were the volume of bomb sirens. He should also report her anyway. A therapist who doesn’t have a full grasp of reality isn’t going to help anyone. She may actually worsen her clients’ conditions.
I don’t even want to laugh at the guy in the first story. As a lady who regularly cuts/nicks herself while shaving, those situations suck and are so scary. Billy has great razors for women. I only get nicked if I haven’t changed the razor head recently enough. You can sign up for a subscription service and tell them how often you shave and they’ll send you razors in accordance with that. They’re also really body positive and have an ad that includes ACTUAL body hair on camera which I’ve never seen before. You know how most ads just have skinny white women “shaving” hairless legs? Yeah they have diverse models shaving hairy legs AND make a statement about how women don’t _need_ to shave but if you want to shave they’ll provide quality products to get the job done. I still remember one of their reviews saying “my toe hair was course enough to braid and Billy glided through it like nothing!” Sorry this sounds like a paid ad I just really like the company 😅
Would hair removal cream be an option for you? If changing the razor won't solve the issue due to your sight issues, then it might be worth looking into to avoid those painful accidents when shaving.
If the guy in the second story had an ABC extinguisher he may have actually been able to help. An ABC is designed to work for several different things.
Both foam or salt extinguishers would work. But with little training and a lot of fuel, the chance of actually doing something useful with one small extinguisher is slim to none.
It might only have been an electrical fire at that point. But what really sucks, is that the apparently didn't even call for help. You don't even have to stop for that.
@BDM he was a Marine so he probably has some basic training in that area. Heck I as a former security guard would have had enough training to help as one of my prior sites made us go through first aid and fire training. I would have been able to put the fire out and also done enough first aid til more qualified people arrived. An ABC would work because it is designed to put out most basic fires. The only one that wouldn't have been safe would have been a water can for obvious reasons.
@@kaylafuller8948 I am not 100% sure, but I am pretty sure Marines actually have extensive training in dealing with things like this. First off, I know that everyone in the navy is heavily trained in fire procedures, as a ship on fire is a really bad thing, so I assume it applies to the marines as well. Also, helicopter crashing is something that they would at least need some preparation for, as it is not like it is a 0% chance of occurance.

I had a married friend who loved to date other women, and the wife knew about it. He also liked to drink. One night he came home drunk, and passed out. The next morning he found his balls shaved clean. The wife looked at him and simply stated, next time, I cut it off.

I’m a pilot and fire extinguishers are able to put out an engine fire, we keep one on board at all times, and the fuel dries quicker than regular gasoline.
Kerosene doesn't burn like gasoline. But i didn't know if they needed the special chemical fire extinguisher type or not to put up. But a small portable car fire extinguisher still might not be enough to help much.
@@diegomarquez5299 Most helicopters use turbines, and Jet A1, which is hard to light. I have accidentally put out fires with it, trying to use it to light them. It will put not burn till it is vapourised, and it will not vapourise till it is really hot, or you spray it out of a fine nozzle at high pressure, to make a mist. But even with that most civilian aircraft and helicopters have a fire extinguisher, and all passenger carrying commercial ones have that plus a fire suppression system for the engines, which does a pretty good job of snuffing fires there.

In the event of an helicopter crash from the height of 50 feet, the people on-board likely perished from injuries and blood loss, not a fire. They laid there, alone, in agony, slipping away, while OP's ex was worried about a wedding. As a USN CSaR veteran, I'd have dumped that heartless slag right there, and gone to help the people in need.
This is exactly why I I use "Magic Shaving Powder." It's pretty much "Nair" and by God does it work no matter how much of a jungle you got going on. My last time shaving was very similar but alone in my shower. I bled for around 15 minutes and completely ruined one of my nice towels before I finally was okay.
Dude.. A regular fire extinguisher can handle an AvGas fire just fine. It's more a matter of getting the blast into the engine intakes. Even then, having someone on the outside helping to extract the occupants is way better than having nobody. Even if they can't readily put the fire out. Things like this are why I keep a carbide-tipped pen with me. Sometimes, getting someone out of a bad situation is just one broken window away.

Story 2. If it was a reciprocating engine helicopter (like the engine in your car) the fire extinguisher may have helped. It’s basically just higher octane gasoline with some lead in it.
Third story: I HATE how parents seem to think that the only thing children shouldn't be exposed to is p*rn or sexual stuff. This story only highlights that! There's a lot of disingenuous content on the internet and the best policy always seems to be to keep an eye on what they watch and be open to explain it to them. Alas, the volume of content children get exposed to nowadays is MASSIVE and it isn't realistic for a parent to closely watch everything along their children, but there are still ways to monitor it!

It's not even that they don't have any knowledge about child psychology, they don't seem to even have a understanding of how to be good people. For me, my kid niece is showing some disturbing behaviors bc her parents let her watch tiktok unsupervised. She was only 6 and she was saying bad words, repeating lies as pranks, saying bad stuff about teachers bc of some skits she saw, etc. But the worst thing was that she was behaving in a kinda body dismorphic way, repeating stuff (that she probably heard in a video) about not having a beautiful body, only taking pictures with heavy filters, wearing make-up every day, etc. I repeat, she's 6!!
I work in EMS. If y'all ever witness an accident and want to help, by all means go ahead and try. But if you feel a scene is too dangerous and there's not much you can safely do, nobody will ever fault you for staying out of it. In fact, we encourage that. The less patients there are to help the better. We don't want you becoming one more. Do what you can, but what you can't, leave to the people who have the right resources and equipment.
The shaving incident feels all to familiar in my life right now. Because my lovely rottie, bit through his ballsack. Blood everywhere. We also tried pads to staunch the bleeding, didnt work since he bit threw a blood vessel. He’s now ‘Buddy No-Balls.” And we no longer have a carpet.

I learned that you never should use rm -rf *, but to always specify the folder from outside. (For those who don't know rm -rf is basicly delete everything + subfolders & files and the * says all files from the folder you are in right now)
Professional Chef here, if you cut yourself either use a cold damp towel & don’t let up on pressure for 15mins or if it’s something like a finger (or in OPs case his balls) put them in a cup of ice water for 10-15mins & keep it still, it’ll look gory but ice water works like a charm & clots bleeding.
That's kinda messed up to because people can't always help, you might just be frozen or not wanting to risk your own life for other random people. In this case the wife's reaction is disgusting, but if she had been objecting because of her hubs safety i would have understand ( they could have still called 991 and maybe stayed at the sideline in case there is something they can help with risk-free)

RE: the helo crash. Spent 20 years as a firefighter. So incidents, the child that died in a fire, the people that we couldn't help in a car crash. Come back to me decades later, I wonder if there was more I could have done. I know intellectually we did everything possible. Emotionally these still come back.
When I was a teenager (I'm a woman), I went against my mom twice to help people in an emergency situation. The first time, we were pulling out of a fast food parking lot and saw a lady hanging out of her car calling for help. My mom thought the lady was drunk, or it was a set up for trafficking or something, and didn't want to get involved because my younger sisters were in the car. But the lady was well dressed and her car was a Lexus. So I got my mom to park a little ways away and went to see if I could help the lady. Turns out she had the worst case of food poisoning I have ever seen in my entire life. She was in and out of consciousness and she'd vomited all over her front seats. She thought she was going to be sick again so I carried her into the restaurant's bathroom. She was so sick she didn't want me to leave her alone. She was so embarrassed, but I kept telling her it was fine, I honestly didn't care, I just wanted her to be okay. We called her husband because she didn't want an ambulance. When her husband arrived I told him privately don't let her talk him out of AT LEAST going to urgent care. I helped him get her into his car and gave him her keys and her purse. They called me later in the week to say thank you because she ended up needing to be hospitalized. I hate to think what would have happened if someone unscrupulous had come along instead of us because she was completely helpless. My mom was even glad we stopped when I explained what was going on. Long story short, if you feel like you should try and help someone, if you can do it safely, I think it's a good thing to try to do. I didn't have any specialized training, but sometimes one person stepping forward to help will give someone else the nudge to step forward to help. I feel bad for the guy in the story because his wife was actively cutting him down. It's clear why they wouldn't work out long term.

This is in response to the body scanner question. A few months ago I had a vasectomy, then went on a flight slightly less than a month after the procedure. When going through the body scanner my surgery spot SET OFF the scanner and causes me to get pulled to the side for a physical exam…the security guard asked if there was anything they should know about, I told the guy I had a vasectomy roughly 3 weeks ago, and his response was “where” I asked what do you mean and he said “where on your body did you have surgery”. I looked him straight in the eyes and said my balls, the only place men can have a vasectomy…
Story 2, I did some flight school. Aviation kerosene is so easy to put out with a fire extinguisher, however it burns rediculusly hot, so getting close is the problem. We have a very small controlled flame that we were to approach and try to put out, and we couldn't get within 10 feet of it, cause of how hot it was.
That's the part some of those commenting doesn't realize that due to the intense heat, the guy wouldn't have been able to get close enough to use the extinguisher. The armchair experts are making a call about what they think that they'd do in such a situation. By the time the guy would have been there, the heat would have been so intense, that he'd have stopped to far way by the heat for his extinguisher to reach the flames, especially with the amount that would be present, and having spread out.

@@Trisanite trying your best is all you can do. It can be hard to live with, and sometimes in the aftermath or during such times, getting help is essential. I've become something of an advocate for mental health over the years. Never be afraid to ask for help. That's something I learned to do more than fourty seven years ago.
Story 2. I agree it's not his fault, however, it's the general hind sight that makes him question. I'd feel the same since I was conditioned by the navy to help with problematic scenarios. But you can't run from a fire on a sub.
Story 2: Fuel for airplanes and helis is supposed to be easier to put out because it is not as rich as regular fuel and regular fuel is too rich to be run through the engine and can cause reduced combustion but i know that in my family's heli we have a regular restaurant fire extinguisher. I know what it's like and op probably could have saved them my dad was saved by a regular fire extinguisher after hitting a power line and a few of our pilots have also been saved if you see a plane or heli hit the ground go check it out even if you dont have anything to help with someone needs to be their incase the person is able to crawl out or you could be the person to call 911 and report it as well.
2nd Story: You're absolutely right, Dabney, it's unlikely OP could have done anything to help. But I would like to add that, even if there _was_ something, it's still not his fault. It's the ex-wife's fault. She's the one who forced him to keep driving in order to get to the stupid wedding. If their blood is on anyone's hands, it's hers. Not saying it definitely is, because once again, I don't think they could have helped. But in the unlikely scenario where his little fire extinguisher could have miraculously saved the day, then and only then would it be her fault. Either way, it's not on OP's shoulders.
In the last story I think there are actually 2 lessons. Be very careful with powerful commands, and also When you fuck up, be honest and tell the folks who are capable of fixing it. Better they know and can fix it, plus they learn you won't lie to hide a mistake.
For those who don't know rm -rf means to remove recursively and force deletion with no "are you sure" prompt. It deletes everything and spares nothing in whatever directory (folder) you select

Second story, the ex-wife really thought being late to a wedding because of a nearby heli-crash wasn’t a good excuse? It was an emergency, I think an emergency trumps a wedding.
Someone at Pixar did “rm -rf” and ended up deleting Toy Story 2 three quarters of the way into production. At the same time, the backup servers were full and were overwriting current data. The movie was saved because an employee was working from home and had a copy of the files.
When I saw that "rm -rf *" I started saying "NOOOO!! Don't do that!". That was one of my biggest fears back when I started working with Linux in my current company. You never use that command with the * unless you're 100% sure of what you're doing and you're at least 3 years in XD. For those who don't know what that does, "rm" is Linux delete command, "-rf" means "delete everything recursively, forcing the delete in every file and folder" and the asterisk means "EVERYTHING".
4th story, I really think that whenever possible it is good to avoid rm -rf * outside your home lab. But it happens to the best of us. If you make that mistake enough times at home you learn to check a lot of times before running dangerous commands.
That first story made me really uncomfortable (I have this thing where I visualize narratives vividly - great for reading books, not so much for these kind of stories), imagine it'd be much worse for guys, of course. I was tempted to skip ahead to the next story, but stuck it out just to make sure the OP was okay.
In the helicopter story. A CO2 or a foam fire extinguisher would have been more than suitable for the job for suppressing the fire, hell helicopters are usually equipped with the same kind of extinguishers found in cars. Even if he's unable to extinguish it fully he still could have suppressed it long enough to pull two people from it, as from what I understand from the story it wasn't roaring into flames.
Story 1: Not a doctor, but my mentor told me to keep Kwik Stop powder - available at pet supply stores- or a styptic pencil - drug store- on hand when doing my dogs’ nails. I tried it once when I nicked myself badly shaving. It chemically cauterizes the wound, so it’ll hurt like a SOB for a minute. Think hand sanitizer on a cut but maybe worse. It’s not meant for stuff that needs medical treatment, though. If the cut isn’t deep but bleeds like a stuck pig, it should work. No maxi pad needed.
the helicopter story - it's actually illegal in some states in the US for people with rescue/medical training to pass an accident they witnessed (if caught). He would have had that from the marines. His fire extinguisher probably wouldn't have done much against the helicopter, but may have helped if one of the people inside was on fire. And he could potentially have pulled them from the wreckage and away from the flames. It's very possible - probable even - that those two folks were dead from the moment they crashed. But you never know. There's no way to know what might have happened, but the women is cruel and heartless with zero empathy. I'm glad they're not together anymore because she is a garbage human. It's admirable of OP to want to go help in that situation. It's a rare and honorable trait. I'm sorry he was saddled with a psycho who doesn't give a crap about human life and caused him to over-ride his natural instinct to help others. He'll probably be kicking himself for the rest of his life, but you can't change the past. You can only change your behavior in future.
The second story: how much OP would have been able to help with his extinguisher very much depends on the type of extinguisher he has. There are specific ones for petrol, kerosine etc, but even then, most helicopters carry a lot of fuel, so one fire extinguisher may not have been enough and also, if OP went in to try to help without the proper fire fighting equipment, the news could very well have been about 3 casualties. ~~ Kerosine burns a lot hotter than gasoline/petrol. ~~ Actually the opposite is true: gasoline burns hotter but the flash point of kerosine is 38-40 C so it's more likely to go boom on a hot summer's day.
Apparently three did die according to another comment. So that would have been possibly a fifth death. You're also right about the amount of fuel being significantly more, and the heat from the fire would have been far to intense for them to get close enough to have been even able to use their extinguisher. I do feel bad for the op in that their fool of a wife didn't let him stop to see if they could do anything at least something to help out. Also some didn't in their response take into consideration that there were already emergency vehicles on the scene, which would have meant at least one or more fire trucks. In the end and sadly, there wasn't much if anything he could actually have done.
I don’t understand why everyone thinks that aviation fuels are so different from what we put in our cars. Civilian aircraft in the US are designed to run on mogas, avgas, or jet-a. Mogas is just the regular gas you find at gas stations. Avgas is (for now) a leaded high octane gas. Jet-A is practically the same as diesel.
For the linux uninitiated: rm means "remove" it deletes files and folders. -rf means (r)recursive and (f) force respectively. Recursive tells the computer to run this command on all the contents of the targeted folder. Force tells the computer to not ask for confirmation and just do it. * is a wild card. It means "everything" in the current folder. There are ways to recover most of the data deleted by this method, as the "rm" command only deletes the reference to the files, not the actual contents. It basically tells the computer to forget where in the disk these files are and assume that space is now empty.
For a time, I was a sys admin. We had a brand new unix server that was not quite in production as we were moving files and databases from the Wang mainframe. This was before GUI on unix, so all command line. Just for kicks, I would occasionally do a user list. At one time, I saw 8 people logged in as root user. In unix, that gives you the unquestioning power of god! Luckily no one was dumb enough to type in at the root directory rm -r (which is remove -recursive), which would have wiped the entire hdd, including the unix OS. I left the job before the unix box went into production. I hope no one used that command as root.
That third story kept getting worse and WORSE! Im a pumpkin pie fan mysekf, but even the most heavenly, God-Touched Pie that cures all illnesses with a single bite isn’t worth that level of crazy! I was at work listening to this and when the mom casually mentioned “she’s been admitted 3 times”, I may have accidentally shouted “WHAT!?” and scared a coworker who was busy with their own stuff to open the business. Theres a major chance the fire was small when they saw it happen and the only reason they died was because it took longer for another person to report the crash(Op and ex didnt even call the cops on the road) and then even longer for a fire truck.
Op saw smoke, not any flames. Ive seen a flaming car crash on the highway, you see the fire and smoke a ways off.
We didnt report it cuz we could hear the emergency vehicles in the distance behind us. It was also on the otherside of the divide and we could feel across a five lane highway

He was fine, and the quad was in a spot where we couldn’t flip it over so we weren’t any help, but damn it, of course we were gonna try!!

I don’t think that disqualifies you. If she’s committed WHILE she works there, maybe it would cost her job. If the commits happened _prior_ to working there, that just means she has the experience to relate to her patients. It’s like my therapist who specializes in PTSD from child abuse because she has it too. It really allows for “I know what it’s like, I’ve been there, and I can tell you with certainty that it gets better, I am living proof.”

Last story: OP shouldn't feel too bad. The exact same thing happened at Pixar back in the day. Yes, *that* Pixar. They were working on Toy Story 2 - which, for context, they were already under a serious time crunch to make, because if they didn't meet the deadline, Disney was gonna turn it into a bad straight-to-video sequel. When one day, about 2/3 through production, somebody accidentally pressed the "delete all" key. Pretty much the entire movie was gone, and because everyone's computers were connected to the same network, no one could recover it. Their saving grace was a woman on maternity leave who had taken her work computer home with her. They called her and had a few people help transport her gigantic 90s computer from her home to the studio, and then upload the files from her computer onto the network.
And the worst part now is because of how bad Lightyear did, that same lady got fired along with the director

I was helping add data to a file and corrupted it. Thankfully the system did nightly backups and only that day's work was lost. The owner of the file had been working on it for years.

In the 2nd story it’s more than likely OP would’ve been injured or killed trying to put out a burning aircraft with a fire extinguisher.
Second story: if you find yourself in a similar situation and can help, just do it. If someone is whinging at you and are being selfish, ignore them. In saying that, saving anyone from an aviation related crash is very dangerous, and a helicopter will drop like a rock especially at low altitude with no lift, so don’t blame yourself OP, it’s very likely they died immediately upon impact.
In general however if you see someone needs help, and you can safely help, don’t be a bystander, and if there’s folk around tell them to phone 911/999 (or whatever your countries emergency number is), get folk to help you out, a lot of the time bystanders are too scared to make the first move in assisting someone but will help if you ask them. I’ve helped plenty injured people, a woman in distress during a DV incident shouting down my road (a jogger, my neighbour and myself protected her from her ex and belittled him to the point he almost cried, he called me “mean”, that’s my badge of honour), a man who fell and became unconscious and folk ignored him because “he’s probably drunk” (SO?!?), so if you’re able to help and it’s safe, then help a fellow human out. Doesn’t have to be a grand gesture or huge heroics.
But for OP especially in this story, there was nothing you could do, maybe phoning emergency services but considering how dangerous aviation crashes/fires are, you could’ve easily lost your own life from helping. You’re not the reason they’re dead, but I understand guilt isn’t that easy to get rid of. Thankfully you did divorce your monstrous ex who viewed an accident as an inconvenience and apparently has zero empathy, so I’m glad you got rid of her OP. Would definitely recommend therapy as you’re not at fault here and talking to a therapist would massively help you out.

However the fire extinguisher might have given enough time to keep them from burning, so they could be removed from the wreck. After all jet fuel takes a lot to start burning, even if it burning is going to be hot enough to soften steel, and also light aluminium on fire. Those first minutes are often the difference between being badly injured, or dead in a gruesome way. Yes have seen the aftermath, and the use of all the fire extinguishers in the area, around 30 of them, kept the fire from growing to destroy this fully fuelled, and fully armed, aircraft. The fire department was 5 minutes in getting there, and they just had to cool down the damage, and wash the smoke and powder away.

My thought too, heavy fuels have a lot of energy but take a lot of energy to ignite. Using the extinguisher in ops story might have been the difference between extricating those people alive and the actual result.
I was in the car with my mom and sister going to a family's home for dinner. My mom and sis saw the crash in the next lane, I heard and saw the aftermath. It was 3 cars. The middle one was hit so hard that it hit the car in front of them. I heard a terrifying scream and rushed out the door and went to the middle car. I saw a car seat and was thankful no kid was in it. The female driver was in agony from her (I think it was the left) leg, it looked broken. There was smoke coming out of the engine (no fire, thank God, but I didn't want her to stay in incase there were) , so me and a couple of people pulled her out and towards my mom's car since it was closer. I was the only one helping her in between other bystanders, but they had to go (understandable since we were on a parkway). The lady understood English but when you're in a traumatic state, you just go by your first language. I called 2 friends who spoke Spanish to help translate so that I could help her as much as I could. My mom and sister were talking to the other driver that started it. She was crying. I think she was a new driver at the time. I forgot what she did, but she was very apologetic. The firefighters and ambulance came, the police didn't show up at all, probably later tho. The EMTs took the woman into the ambulance. My family and I were able to leave. Once we were away from the scene, my composure cracked and I broke down the whole way to the house. My family was proud of me but understood it was a lot. My mom and sister were just talking to the girl and the firefighters. The first car in front that got hit was mad but ok.
I sympathize with the guy from story 3. Being female, on his shoes, these flags would almost certainly be a death sentence. So, pumpkin would literally be the death of me had I been in OP's shoes, and the genders were reversed.
Story 3: What an absolute train wreck! There are SO MANY things he could have done to end it during the date. Like, after her parents mentioned that they had committed her before, let them know that this was a first date and he barely knew her and that whatever she’s told them about him she made up. That would have tipped the parents off that their daughter was losing touch with reality again. Well, hopefully, anyway. The parents seem to be putting on rose-colored glasses atm. But, yeah, the alarm bells were the volume of bomb sirens. He should also report her anyway. A therapist who doesn’t have a full grasp of reality isn’t going to help anyone. She may actually worsen her clients’ conditions.
I don’t even want to laugh at the guy in the first story. As a lady who regularly cuts/nicks herself while shaving, those situations suck and are so scary. Billy has great razors for women. I only get nicked if I haven’t changed the razor head recently enough. You can sign up for a subscription service and tell them how often you shave and they’ll send you razors in accordance with that. They’re also really body positive and have an ad that includes ACTUAL body hair on camera which I’ve never seen before. You know how most ads just have skinny white women “shaving” hairless legs? Yeah they have diverse models shaving hairy legs AND make a statement about how women don’t _need_ to shave but if you want to shave they’ll provide quality products to get the job done. I still remember one of their reviews saying “my toe hair was course enough to braid and Billy glided through it like nothing!”

If changing the razor won't solve the issue due to your sight issues, then it might be worth looking into to avoid those painful accidents when shaving.
If the guy in the second story had an ABC extinguisher he may have actually been able to help. An ABC is designed to work for several different things.
Both foam or salt extinguishers would work. But with little training and a lot of fuel, the chance of actually doing something useful with one small extinguisher is slim to none.
It might only have been an electrical fire at that point. But what really sucks, is that the apparently didn't even call for help. You don't even have to stop for that.
@BDM he was a Marine so he probably has some basic training in that area. Heck I as a former security guard would have had enough training to help as one of my prior sites made us go through first aid and fire training. I would have been able to put the fire out and also done enough first aid til more qualified people arrived. An ABC would work because it is designed to put out most basic fires. The only one that wouldn't have been safe would have been a water can for obvious reasons.
@@kaylafuller8948 I am not 100% sure, but I am pretty sure Marines actually have extensive training in dealing with things like this. First off, I know that everyone in the navy is heavily trained in fire procedures, as a ship on fire is a really bad thing, so I assume it applies to the marines as well. Also, helicopter crashing is something that they would at least need some preparation for, as it is not like it is a 0% chance of occurance.

I’m a pilot and fire extinguishers are able to put out an engine fire, we keep one on board at all times, and the fuel dries quicker than regular gasoline.
Kerosene doesn't burn like gasoline. But i didn't know if they needed the special chemical fire extinguisher type or not to put up.
But a small portable car fire extinguisher still might not be enough to help much.
@@diegomarquez5299 Most helicopters use turbines, and Jet A1, which is hard to light. I have accidentally put out fires with it, trying to use it to light them. It will put not burn till it is vapourised, and it will not vapourise till it is really hot, or you spray it out of a fine nozzle at high pressure, to make a mist. But even with that most civilian aircraft and helicopters have a fire extinguisher, and all passenger carrying commercial ones have that plus a fire suppression system for the engines, which does a pretty good job of snuffing fires there.
Fire extinguisher types are A, B, C, D, K. Sizes are as small as 2-2.5 lbs. But it seems a class B fire is enough to pit out fuel fires.

In the event of an helicopter crash from the height of 50 feet, the people on-board likely perished from injuries and blood loss, not a fire. As a USN CSaR veteran, I'd have dumped that heartless slag right there, and gone to help the people in need.
This is exactly why I I use "Magic Shaving Powder." It's pretty much "Nair" and by God does it work no matter how much of a jungle you got going on. My last time shaving was very similar but alone in my shower. I bled for around 15 minutes and completely ruined one of my nice towels before I finally was okay.
Dude.. A regular fire extinguisher can handle an AvGas fire just fine. It's more a matter of getting the blast into the engine intakes. Even then, having someone on the outside helping to extract the occupants is way better than having nobody. Even if they can't readily put the fire out. Things like this are why I keep a carbide-tipped pen with me. Sometimes, getting someone out of a bad situation is just one broken window away.

For the uninitiated, `rm` is the command to delete a file (it's short for "remove"), `-r` includes folders, `-f` includes files that normally wouldn't be deleted, and `*` matches every file in the current folder. All together, it basically boils down to "delete this folder and all its contents, no exceptions".
Tried Googling "2008 California helicopter crash" and using the fact that OP said that 2 people died, I was lead to an NYT article that may be the crash in question.

Story 2. If it was a reciprocating engine helicopter (like the engine in your car) the fire extinguisher may have helped. It’s basically just higher octane gasoline with some lead in it.
Third story: I HATE how parents seem to think that the only thing children shouldn't be exposed to is p*rn or sexual stuff. This story only highlights that! There's a lot of disingenuous content on the internet and the best policy always seems to be to keep an eye on what they watch and be open to explain it to them. Alas, the volume of content children get exposed to nowadays is MASSIVE and it isn't realistic for a parent to closely watch everything along their children, but there are still ways to monitor it!
We stopped our kids from watching youtubers when they started behaving like them, ie toxic and entitled.

It's not even that they don't have any knowledge about child psychology, they don't seem to even have a understanding of how to be good people.
For me, my kid niece is showing some disturbing behaviors bc her parents let her watch tiktok unsupervised. She was only 6 and she was saying bad words, repeating lies as pranks, saying bad stuff about teachers bc of some skits she saw, etc. But the worst thing was that she was behaving in a kinda body dismorphic way, repeating stuff (that she probably heard in a video) about not having a beautiful body, only taking pictures with heavy filters, wearing make-up every day, etc. I repeat, she's 6!!
I work in EMS. If y'all ever witness an accident and want to help, by all means go ahead and try. But if you feel a scene is too dangerous and there's not much you can safely do, nobody will ever fault you for staying out of it. In fact, we encourage that. The less patients there are to help the better. We don't want you becoming one more.
Do what you can, but what you can't, leave to the people who have the right resources and equipment.

I learned that you never should use rm -rf *, but to always specify the folder from outside. (For those who don't know rm -rf is basicly delete everything + subfolders & files and the * says all files from the folder you are in right now)
Professional Chef here, if you cut yourself either use a cold damp towel & don’t let up on pressure for 15mins or if it’s something like a finger (or in OPs case his balls) put them in a cup of ice water for 10-15mins & keep it still, it’ll look gory but ice water works like a charm & clots bleeding.
You'd think that someone would put a confirmation prompt of "Are you sure you want to wipe the entire database?" for a command like that. lol
hopefully op 2 is seeing somebody to help him with that trauma considering he shouldn't have to live with that guilt hanging over his head
Second story: In my country people can be charged for not helping others in a obvious dangerous situation.
That's kinda messed up to because people can't always help, you might just be frozen or not wanting to risk your own life for other random people. In this case the wife's reaction is disgusting, but if she had been objecting because of her hubs safety i would have understand ( they could have still called 991 and maybe stayed at the sideline in case there is something they can help with risk-free)

RE: the helo crash. Spent 20 years as a firefighter. So incidents, the child that died in a fire, the people that we couldn't help in a car crash. Come back to me decades later, I wonder if there was more I could have done. I know intellectually we did everything possible. Emotionally these still come back.

When I was a teenager (I'm a woman), I went against my mom twice to help people in an emergency situation. The first time, we were pulling out of a fast food parking lot and saw a lady hanging out of her car calling for help. My mom thought the lady was drunk, or it was a set up for trafficking or something, and didn't want to get involved because my younger sisters were in the car. But the lady was well dressed and her car was a Lexus. So I got my mom to park a little ways away and went to see if I could help the lady.
Turns out she had the worst case of food poisoning I have ever seen in my entire life. She was in and out of consciousness and she'd vomited all over her front seats. She thought she was going to be sick again so I carried her into the restaurant's bathroom. She was so sick she didn't want me to leave her alone. She was so embarrassed, but I kept telling her it was fine, I honestly didn't care, I just wanted her to be okay.
We called her husband because she didn't want an ambulance. When her husband arrived I told him privately don't let her talk him out of AT LEAST going to urgent care. I helped him get her into his car and gave him her keys and her purse. They called me later in the week to say thank you because she ended up needing to be hospitalized. I hate to think what would have happened if someone unscrupulous had come along instead of us because she was completely helpless. My mom was even glad we stopped when I explained what was going on.
Long story short, if you feel like you should try and help someone, if you can do it safely, I think it's a good thing to try to do. I didn't have any specialized training, but sometimes one person stepping forward to help will give someone else the nudge to step forward to help. I feel bad for the guy in the story because his wife was actively cutting him down. It's clear why they wouldn't work out long term.

6:58 Reminds me of a relationship I had in 8th grade. We were in the same area but went to different schools so we face timed a lot. Eventually she asked me out because she was getting teased by her siblings while on call and I said "sure". Fast forward like 3 months and she had shown that she was super possessive and wouldn't leave me alone. I didn't text back in -0.5 seconds and I was ignoring her or in trouble. This is in response to the body scanner question. A few months ago I had a vasectomy, then went on a flight slightly less than a month after the procedure. When going through the body scanner my surgery spot SET OFF the scanner and causes me to get pulled to the side for a physical exam…the security guard asked if there was anything they should know about, I told the guy I had a vasectomy roughly 3 weeks ago, and his response was “where” I asked what do you mean and he said “where on your body did you have surgery”. Today I learned rslash doesn't know how fire extinguishers work
Story 2, I did some flight school. Aviation kerosene is so easy to put out with a fire extinguisher, however it burns rediculusly hot, so getting close is the problem. We have a very small controlled flame that we were to approach and try to put out, and we couldn't get within 10 feet of it, cause of how hot it was.
That's the part some of those commenting doesn't realize that due to the intense heat, the guy wouldn't have been able to get close enough to use the extinguisher. The armchair experts are making a call about what they think that they'd do in such a situation. By the time the guy would have been there, the heat would have been so intense, that he'd have stopped to far way by the heat for his extinguisher to reach the flames, especially with the amount that would be present, and having spread out.

@@Trisanite trying your best is all you can do. It can be hard to live with, and sometimes in the aftermath or during such times, getting help is essential. I've become something of an advocate for mental health over the years. Never be afraid to ask for help. That's something I learned to do more than fourty seven years ago.

Story 2. I agree it's not his fault, however, it's the general hind sight that makes him question. I'd feel the same since I was conditioned by the navy to help with problematic scenarios. But you can't run from a fire on a sub.
A combo between being male and having a phobia of blood made that first story very hard.
Story 2: Fuel for airplanes and helis is supposed to be easier to put out because it is not as rich as regular fuel and regular fuel is too rich to be run through the engine and can cause reduced combustion but i know that in my family's heli we have a regular restaurant fire extinguisher. I know what it's like and op probably could have saved them my dad was saved by a regular fire extinguisher after hitting a power line and a few of our pilots have also been saved if you see a plane or heli hit the ground go check it out even if you dont have anything to help with someone needs to be their incase the person is able to crawl out or you could be the person to call 911 and report it as well.
2nd Story: You're absolutely right, Dabney, it's unlikely OP could have done anything to help. But I would like to add that, even if there _was_ something, it's still not his fault. It's the ex-wife's fault. She's the one who forced him to keep driving in order to get to the stupid wedding. If their blood is on anyone's hands, it's hers. Not saying it definitely is, because once again, I don't think they could have helped. But in the unlikely scenario where his little fire extinguisher could have miraculously saved the day, then and only then would it be her fault. Either way, it's not on OP's shoulders.
In the last story I think there are actually 2 lessons. Be very careful with powerful commands, and also When you fuck up, be honest and tell the folks who are capable of fixing it. Better they know and can fix it, plus they learn you won't lie to hide a mistake.

Someone at Pixar did “rm -rf” and ended up deleting Toy Story 2 three quarters of the way into production. At the same time, the backup servers were full and were overwriting current data. The movie was saved because an employee was working from home and had a copy of the files.
When I saw that "rm -rf *" I started saying "NOOOO!! Don't do that!". That was one of my biggest fears back when I started working with Linux in my current company. You never use that command with the * unless you're 100% sure of what you're doing and you're at least 3 years in XD.
For those who don't know what that does, "rm" is Linux delete command, "-rf" means "delete everything recursively, forcing the delete in every file and folder" and the asterisk means "EVERYTHING".
4th story, I really think that whenever possible it is good to avoid rm -rf * outside your home lab. But it happens to the best of us. If you make that mistake enough times at home you learn to check a lot of times before running dangerous commands.
That first story made me really uncomfortable (I have this thing where I visualize narratives vividly - great for reading books, not so much for these kind of stories), imagine it'd be much worse for guys, of course. I was tempted to skip ahead to the next story, but stuck it out just to make sure the OP was okay.
In the helicopter story. A CO2 or a foam fire extinguisher would have been more than suitable for the job for suppressing the fire, hell helicopters are usually equipped with the same kind of extinguishers found in cars. Even if he's unable to extinguish it fully he still could have suppressed it long enough to pull two people from it, as from what I understand from the story it wasn't roaring into flames.

Story 1: Not a doctor, but my mentor told me to keep Kwik Stop powder - available at pet supply stores- or a styptic pencil - drug store- on hand when doing my dogs’ nails. I tried it once when I nicked myself badly shaving. It chemically cauterizes the wound, so it’ll hurt like a SOB for a minute. Think hand sanitizer on a cut but maybe worse. It’s not meant for stuff that needs medical treatment, though. If the cut isn’t deep but bleeds like a stuck pig, it should work. No maxi pad needed.
the helicopter story - it's actually illegal in some states in the US for people with rescue/medical training to pass an accident they witnessed (if caught). He would have had that from the marines. His fire extinguisher probably wouldn't have done much against the helicopter, but may have helped if one of the people inside was on fire. And he could potentially have pulled them from the wreckage and away from the flames. It's very possible - probable even - that those two folks were dead from the moment they crashed. But you never know.
There's no way to know what might have happened, but the women is cruel and heartless with zero empathy. I'm glad they're not together anymore because she is a garbage human. It's admirable of OP to want to go help in that situation. It's a rare and honorable trait. I'm sorry he was saddled with a psycho who doesn't give a crap about human life and caused him to over-ride his natural instinct to help others.

The second story: how much OP would have been able to help with his extinguisher very much depends on the type of extinguisher he has. There are specific ones for petrol, kerosine etc, but even then, most helicopters carry a lot of fuel, so one fire extinguisher may not have been enough and also, if OP went in to try to help without the proper fire fighting equipment, the news could very well have been about 3 casualties. ~~ Kerosine burns a lot hotter than gasoline/petrol. ~~ Actually the opposite is true: gasoline burns hotter but the flash point of kerosine is 38-40 C so it's more likely to go boom on a hot summer's day.
Apparently three did die according to another comment. So that would have been possibly a fifth death. You're also right about the amount of fuel being significantly more, and the heat from the fire would have been far to intense for them to get close enough to have been even able to use their extinguisher. I do feel bad for the op in that their fool of a wife didn't let him stop to see if they could do anything at least something to help out. Also some didn't in their response take into consideration that there were already emergency vehicles on the scene, which would have meant at least one or more fire trucks. In the end and sadly, there wasn't much if anything he could actually have done.
I don’t understand why everyone thinks that aviation fuels are so different from what we put in our cars. Civilian aircraft in the US are designed to run on mogas, avgas, or jet-a. Mogas is just the regular gas you find at gas stations. Avgas is (for now) a leaded high octane gas. Jet-A is practically the same as diesel.
For the linux uninitiated:
rm means "remove" it deletes files and folders.
-rf means (r)recursive and (f) force respectively. Recursive tells the computer to run this command on all the contents of the targeted folder. Force tells the computer to not ask for confirmation and just do it.
* is a wild card. It means "everything" in the current folder.
There are ways to recover most of the data deleted by this method, as the "rm" command only deletes the reference to the files, not the actual contents. It basically tells the computer to forget where in the disk these files are and assume that space is now empty.
For a time, I was a sys admin. We had a brand new unix server that was not quite in production as we were moving files and databases from the Wang mainframe. This was before GUI on unix, so all command line. Just for kicks, I would occasionally do a user list. At one time, I saw 8 people logged in as root user. In unix, that gives you the unquestioning power of god! Luckily no one was dumb enough to type in at the root directory rm -r (which is remove -recursive), which would have wiped the entire hdd, including the unix OS. I left the job before the unix box went into production. I hope no one used that command as root.

That third story kept getting worse and WORSE! Im a pumpkin pie fan mysekf, but even the most heavenly, God-Touched Pie that cures all illnesses with a single bite isn’t worth that level of crazy! I was at work listening to this and when the mom casually mentioned “she’s been admitted 3 times”, I may have accidentally shouted “WHAT!?” and scared a coworker who was busy with their own stuff to open the business.
