I remember going into my brother's save file and having his hero eat a butt load of crunchy chicks, beat up villagers, marry someone and then sacrifice her to Skorm. When he played a few days later, his once glowing blue eyed hero was a fat, balding, murderous, divorced demon with flies buzzing around him. He grew to like him.

Yup, was pre internet time for me, got it on CD by recommendation of a friend. Absolutely enjoyed it. Actually this is the first time I hear about this overhype by Mollineux. My only review source back then were PC gaming magazines and the one I read usually only made tests of finished products. Got good reviews there too, so I`m really surprised xD. Maybe a good prove, that hyping can do more harm than good sometimes. I mean Vampires Bloodline f. ex was brilliant. Once you get it to actually run by patching. I bet if it came out today in the way it did back then, it would get roasted into oblivion and no one would remember it as one of the best RPGs ever to be made. Times really changed, jeez...

This video was a very good overview for one of my favourite RPGs! It's a shame that it never got to live up to Peter's claims but I feel like it stands on its own two feet, it just needed a bit more time to be fleshed out to refine what the game already excels in!

The concept was to be who you want to be, and you still find yourself locked in to a pre-written story. Once you get to the arena, if you hero save right before the last phase and keep reloading, you can basically grind your way to max stats pretty quickly. There's also the one quest early on with a key right in the first area, so you can hero-save scum your way up to the max 20 keys and open every chest you ever come across as soon as you get to it.

You would in fact find that this game's gameplay and systems all became precursors for many other game's systems, heck even the Witcher 3 Wild Hunt uses so many elements from Fable that its uncanny to think that the games have a 13 year gap between them.

Love the video, also some common misinformation I always hear, some of the promised features was in development but scrapped due to the Xbox not being powerful enough, Multiplayer was scrapped way late in the game that the assets are still in the game’s code, and other assets too, another fun fact, Fable Anniversary was out sourced and began working on an older version, so Fable Anniversary has more unused assets in it’s game files than the PC release of TLC

  • @ilovemonkeyos

Okay, but the whole acorn thing, I think, could have actually been implemented- and relatively simply.
Basically: Make a spot in the world TO plant an acorn, and once the player does then it accrues a “growth point” after each quest is completed in the game; and after X amount of ‘points’ are accrued (behind the scenes) the acorn/trees grows into a new stage of its development.
Naturally, one potential drawback is that you may not be able to see the acorn grow fully if you plant the acorn too late in your playthrough (since there wouldn’t be any more quests to complete after a certain point, depending on if you’re playing The Lost Chapters or not).
You COULD tie the acorn to the clock, much like how the crime fine system is, and thus allowing a player to see the full growth. But then the progress of said growth would most likely be exponentially slower and players may give up on waiting for the growth before it’s finished.

Is there any game other game like that? Where your choices have effects on the hero physical attribute, getting fat, or build like a bodybuilder, evil look, or angel look,...
Is there any game where you start as a child and grow up...
I don't think so, I never heard of any other game that reached that level... And we are in 2022... Amazing.

This was a really hard game for me to get in as I was 7-8 years old when it came out - but the rpg aspect and the good/evil mechanic caught my eye since I was familiar with the Knights of the Old Republic light/dark side mechanic. Check out SpiffingBrits video of Fable it’s great

I can honestly say this was one of the first video game I ever played on the OG Xbox other than halo two, which came with the Xbox. It was such a fun and fascinating experience for my first RPG. I still couldn’t believe the amount of things I was allowed to do in that game. Wild Knights of the old republic. Will probably go down as my favorite RPG of all time. Fable is a very close second.

I played this game entirely too much as a kid. Legitimately beat it like a thousand times. It was so much fun despite being so easy that I did challenge runs. Like Don't get hit, never level up, no scars run, beat it using only a stick and so on.

The game was fun enough, but when you promise big the expectations follow. For 2004, if people didn't know what they "thought" they were missing, the game would have stood on it's merits just fine.

I was a bit on the young side to be following Peter around doing his interviews, so I never got exposed to the overhype lol. But I remember my Halo CE having the trailer for Fable on it and watching that dozens of times. Then I sorta forgot about it until I got invited to a Halo LAN party by my friend, 5 years older than me, that he was hosting and one of his other friends had the game and I just watched him play for like 30 minutes and I was so enthralled by the gameplay that I traded in a bunch of games I had sitting around to buy a copy from EB Games the next day.
I actually really like the style of the Anniversary edition. And I loved the new AoE spells added with TLC. The only thing I didn't really like about the TLC/Anniversary edition was that they totally nerfed how much damage the Sword of Aeons did so that it wasn't even the strongest weapon in the game anymore. It's not even really that it was nerfed... but the fact that other random weapons were now stronger than this endgame weapon.

I never heard of the multiplayer side being promised, but I do remember all the hype about how open the world was, and how your choices were responsible for how that world evolved.
I also remember realizing that it was mostly a bunch of lies, but I DON'T remember being all that mad about it. I had fun with the game regardless, and played it through a couple of times.

I remember reading a preview article in an issue of Edge gaming magazine, and getting rather excited until I realised most of the mechanics would be rather hard to pull off on a console with limited save file storage.

Yes, OG Fable was waaayyy over hyped.. but isn't everything now days? For the time it was still the best video game of all time. I have nothing but fond memories of Fable.. I own anniversary and could play it right now and have a blast. The sequels were kinda meh.. not sure why.. maybe the addition of guns instead of the bow.

The hype around this game was insane. This was at a time when video game magazine subscriptions were still a thing and I remember waiting every month for more screenshots and details, still playing Morrowind to get my RPG fix and bide time. There were a lot of unfulfilled promises, but to me it was still fascinating to see your character change over time, become grotesque or heavenly, become fat or muscular, and to watch his hair and beard grow. Those features were groundbreaking at the time, and those are mechanics we still hold dear today in games like RDR2.

i got to play fable back in 2008. i just happen to get a copy when i was browsing on a shop. i wasn't aware of the issues surrounding the game and i just played it. i thought it was great albeit gets repetitive at times. what i hated about it is that your stats will go down as your character gets older while getting into the chapters. while it is a bit realistic, it cuts on the fun aspect. the karma system affecting your character appearance and npc reaction is kinda neat.
