    Along with Out Run and After Burner, I will never ever forget seeing this for the first time in the arcade back in the 80's. I have a huge soft spot for the SMS version of the game, the SMS was my next gaming device after the Acorn Electron so my friends and I had not played anything like it at home before. Great video and good memories.

    Half of the experience of being in an arcade is being completely immersed in the theme music blasting from a hundred machines.

      Dempa done a good job with the X68000 port, even more considering its early release date (1987), but the 32X port is clearly better. The X68000 version lacks the checkered-looking floor which is a huge fail since it's part of Space Harrier's identity + it also lacks the parallax scrollings and some sound FX aren't as accurate as in the 32X version. And there are probably others differences...
      Also the footage of the 32X version isn't optimal, it looks kinda choppy and sounds a bit off compared to real hardware.

    • @CommodoreFan64
      @CommodoreFan64 9 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      ryzmaker11 Even with emulation you can get the 32X version to run butter smooth using KEGA Fusion for windows, and the 3 bios roms needed for KEGA to do 32X emulation, but it needs to be running at full 60hz NTSC mode to get the speed correct. I owned a 32X as a kid, and had Space Harrier, and it's one of my favorite ports next to the actual arcade game.

      If I had to pick a computer version, it would be the X68000 (XVI or higher) with 8mb RAM or more, a good joystick (with spares), something to hook up to an Australian TV with it (via HDMI), SC55 Sound Canvas and something to replace the HD so it can run games off a card slot. Power convertor mandatory?

    The ports without the checkered floor = FAIL (I already said it in the older video but it's required to be precised here too). This checkered floor is part of the game's identity, even the Spectrum port has it!

    • @robertmiles9942
      @robertmiles9942 3 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      @@GeoNeilUK Totally different ports for the C64 between PAL and NTSC were not very uncommon, for a few different reasons. Sometimes a software team only had equipment for one standard, so an entirely different team was given the job of doing the port for the other market. Bionic Commando and 720° had separate ports done by different teams. Sometimes the fixes made to an existing PAL version to make it work with NTSC had to involve significant core rewites, so other stuff was reimagined at the same time.

    Okay, personally, I'm impressed with the C64 version. The 32X version captures the Arcade experience perfectly as well, but come on. Someone needs to give the C64 version props. The game looks great for the system and it at least was close (or, one of the closest things to) to sounding almost identical to the Arcade version. With the incredibly limited hardware (even for the time) this version captures it perfectly without any issues. Sprites are actually great for C64, the music is something a lot of those C64 games don't get, and it's just overall a great port of the game for such a low power computer, especially at the time.

    News flash, everyone! Space Harrier II is included on the Genesis Mini 2 as the new and improved version of the original 1988 cartridge release but now with decent sprite scaling, smooth scrolling, tight responsive controls, pixel-perfect collision detection, and best of all, the inclusion of the original Space Harrier!
    However, the only thing I don't like is the annoying sprite flicker, but you can turn on de-flicker mode at any time simply by highlighting "options" while holding down the right button on the D-pad and hitting the start button.

    Don't play the DOS version with the windows open, you'll have every dog in the neighborhood howling!
    The Amiga version is another case where the US and European versions are slightly different. The US version shows "SEGA" while loading, loads to the classic title screen with a mammoth and robot, the "Get ready!" sounds more like the arcade (like it does in this video) and the game plays slightly slower. It's still too fast, but not as bad as the European version. There's only a short load between levels and the game never pauses, although for some reason, it displays the level title for what seems like an eternity before the level starts.
    The European version shows a piece of artwork while a voice says "Welcome to the Fantasy Zone". It loads to a rolling demo of the guy running while displaying the high scores and when you press the button, it loads the first level. The "Get ready!" and the scream when you die sound nothing like the arcade. After beating the boss, the game freezes for several seconds while it loads the next level, but only makes you wait about half as longas the US version before the level starts. Everything moves too fast though. When fighting the level one boss, you'd better move the instant you see the fireballs in the distance or you'll be dead because they reach you in about 1/2 a second.

    About the sound. That's why i prefer japanese composers. I mean, looking at the NEC PC8801 vc the Commodore... the NEC sounds smoother and closer to the arcade. Well, of coursem, that's my opinion.

    The ST version was surprisingly good. Fast with good use of colour and addictive gameplay. Its smaller on screen game area was soon forgotten as you tried to better your last attempt.
    The later Amiga version looked amazing, visually in magazines. Playing it was a wow factor at first until you moved around and altered the perspective...the lack of scaled frames soon became apparent. This reduction visually didnt help on fast stages which left you with a choppy looking experience. Sound was also appalling for a machine with such capabilities.

    Some notes: I'm rating the ports and how they compare to original arcade. The 32X is counted among the 16 bit versions, I don't care if the 32X is actually 32 bit, it was an add on for the MegaDrive, it counts as part of the 16 bit era) I'm not going further than the 16 bit era because the original game came out as part of the 16 bit era.
    *Best 8 bit versions:*
    Graphics: Master System (not 3D)
    Sound: Commodore 64!
    *Worst 8 bit versions:*
    Graphics: Sharp X1
    Sound: ZX Spectrum (Space Harrier I)
    *Best 16 bit version:* Sharp X68000
    *Worst 16 bit version:* Commodore Amiga
    *Surprises:*
    That the European 8 bit versions looked so much better than the Japanese 8 bit versions wih the exception of the Fujitsu FM-7.
    That the PC Engine version was better than the MegaDrive version, could you imagine playing that on a TurboGrafx Express back in the 1990s?!
    That the US C64 version of Space Harrier is better than the EU C64 version. That got to come from more than the timing difference bwtween PAL and NTSC.
    That the PS2 version is actually an all-new game and not just emulating the arcade original.
    *What could have been:*
    Oh if only there could have been a SNES version.
    A _proper_ natively developed version for the Dreamcast like wth the PS2.
    If only the Apple IIgs version went further than a demo, it actually looks better than both the Amiga and ST versions.

    • @jasonlee7816
      @jasonlee7816 6 ปีที่แล้ว +1

    The Saturn, Wii, 3DS, and 32X are probably the most accurate ports to date. The Dreamcast port is ok but the sound is bonkers, same with the 360/PS3 port. Honestly I'd say the TG-16, X68k, GG, and SMS ports are the best pre-32X ports.

    • @Hellwyck

      Well the Game Gear and the Master System are practically the same hardware.

    • @mudkiptg
      @mudkiptg 6 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      The Famicom version was slow as fuck though. The Master System is the faster one, but with terrible, disorienting, visuals; the Mega Drive Version was named Space Harrier 2 for a reason, and the 32X Version was arcade perfect as well.
