    I have spent an inordinate part of my life listening to this theme - the composition and the chip used for the arcade version, together are something special. Always a real treat to find people out there who have internalised it in the same way, and gone to such lengths to bring a collection like this together. Thanks a bunch!

    I thought this would be like an explanation as to exactly how this legendary song came about. Honestly though it seems even Sega forgot this game existed. And almost every reviewer that talks about yu Suzuki credits him as “the creator of such classics as Hang On, OutRun, and AfterBurner”. Like, yeah, let’s just pretend Space Harrier doesn’t exist because apparently it’s “not as good” as the others. Apparently a generic 80s racing game like Hang On is superior to a video drug trip like Space Harrier.

    The Japanese Sega Master System BIOS sounds like the best recreation. The podcast "Sega System Masterpieces" used it as their outro and I always through that it was a cover produced by modern chiptune artist, but no it's a demoscene built into the japanese SMS.

      I love that version as well! It uses the FM sound chip that sadly they left out of the American Master System. As much as I will always love the music from our version of Space Harrier, having the FM sound chip for this (and for Phantasy Star, as well) would have been incredible!

      Because it's Sega. Sega could visualize the future and work on innovating it. Their systems were either ahead of the curve, or slightly behind it. Why? Just so they can bring home the kick-ass experience of the arcade, just like SNK and it's Neo-Geo AES.

      millgiass
      Which SMS version do you mean? The ones without the PSG are the superior FM synthesis ones. The Japanese BIOS FM version is my favourite among the SMS versions. It should have been in the actual game rather than just the BIOS.
      But yeah, the Fantasy Zone Arranged is my favourite overall. That should have been used in the actual Space Harrier X68000 game itself, rather than just a bonus stage in Fantasy Zone.

    • @millgiass
      @millgiass 10 ปีที่แล้ว

      The one I like better is without the PSG. The one they used for the NA release. In fact I can say that across the board I like the Sega Mastersystem versions over the JP versions. Those extra layers of synth always sound tacky and tinny to me.

    70's and 80's was the best though. Wasn't even alive back then but still, compare the originality and style of the games and music from that era. Nothing can compare to now. Those older ones will always remain superior in my mind. All you have these days are clones. We need something daringly original and brilliant like another one of these games. (Is speaking about it and has never played it.) But another game to rise above all and not get overloaded with the popular youtuber-trash games.

      Pixelized Dreams Why? The retro games? I don't know. I like them best. I like them for the simple graphics, usually easy to get used to controls (not because of how few controls there are, but actually the way the characters move in each game ect. I guess because of the lack of extreme physics) and the music most of all. Just the sounds they use for the synth things sound cool. I want to see a decent 16-bit flash-back game. Like one made from scratch inspired by 16-bit. Using the original color palette, exact sounds in sound effects and music, and such. But nope. When someone makes an "8-bit" game or "16-bit" game they ALWAYS fail in one of those categories.

    • @whinpify
      @whinpify 8 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Oh yea, I was born in '00 and I don't know anyone that plays retro games like me. Well irl anyway.
      I really like retro games and such... I'm just not really used to NES games yet though. They're frustratingly hard, and I'll probably never beat Shovel Knight because it's what it is, hard. But I really like it and it gives me a sense of satisfaction when the rare occurrence happens when I beat a stage.

      +VGM Hall of Fame Which one did you use? There are a few (STEEm SSE ataristeven.exxoshost.co.uk/Steem.htm , HAtari hatari.tuxfamily.org/index.html and SainT, which is a bit old now leonard.oxg.free.fr/SainT/saint.html) but you can also play ST music without needing an emulator. atari.st/music.php?id=1581&title=Space%20Harrier There are some suggestions there but other apps will also play the music such as DeliPlayer 2 www.exotica.org.uk/wiki/DeliPlayer and Audio Overload www.bannister.org/software/ao.htm

      +MagikGimp yeah I think i was using SainT at the time, I now use the JAM player for ST music files, infact your post reminded me to download the latest sndh archives :) I heard HAtari has pretty faithful sound emulation so I'll give that a try too

    That bayonetta version is horrible, almost as bad as the Amiga version! This video is also a good example of how music has evolved since the 1980s - and it's not for the better. :(
