en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Californ...
California Games is a 1987 Epyx sports video game for many home computers and video game consoles. Branching from their popular Summer Games and Winter Games series, this game consisted of some sports purportedly popular in California including skateboarding, freestyle footbag, surfing, roller skating, flying disc (frisbee) and BMX.
The game sold very well, topping game selling charts for winter months. It also got very positive reaction from reviewers, many of whom consider California Games to be the last classic Epyx sports game, due to staff changes not long after its release.
The game was followed in 1991 by California Games 2, but the sequel failed to match the original's success. - เกม
I vote the C64 version, but I'm actually amazed at how good the Atari 2600 version looks. I didn't know it was capable of such great graphics (considering the limitations)
The entirety of the 2600 version is one technological feat.
4 months in the making. I even had to build the title screen logo from scratch because everything that I found was so shitty looking. Turned out good IMO. :)
The Lynx video isn't showing what it's capable of. On the surfing portion, if you hit the wave at the right time, it'll fling you and the surfboard into endless 360s straight up. The scrolling is incredible. The BMX can also do a bunch of upside down loops too if you know how to execute the moves right. And it's 4-player via ComLynx cables if you have 4 friends with Lynxes and the game. I'm voting for the Lynx as the best version. I'm disappointed in the Genesis version. Too bad we didn't get a Jaguar version.
How do you do that trick with the wave on the Lynx? I must have played the surfing event thousands of times but never managed to do that. I can do an Unreal (5x) 360 every so often, but that's more or less it...
yes thats what i love about that version i though i was just me. i wonder if the genesis version does this too? Or is there any other version that does that? are you sure genesis does't. Let hope it comes to the AtariBox.
I'm in full agreement with the surfing and BMX. The footbag is pretty dope, too.
I'll highlight it when I'm finished with the Description. It's in the credits at the end.
I owned the SMS, Mega Drive, DOS and Lynx versions back in the day, and played the C64 and NES versions a heap at my neighbour's house. The Lynx version is the one I constantly go back to, so I'd say it's the best, most streamlined version. It may be missing a few games, but it's got all the best ones and contains the only really playable version of Halfpipe. Surfing is tight on the Lynx, with much improved physics over the other versions. The BMX is a lot of fun, and doesn't go nuts with the cheap difficulty of the other ports. Footbag on the Lynx is sublime, but mostly the same as the other versions, since that event was always supremely playable no matter what version you owned. The music is also infinitely better on real hardware - Handy still butchers the audio in all Lynx games. Lynx takes the win for me!
I've never played this game on any platform before, but if I were to ever play it the first version I would try would be the C64 hands down. BTW GamingHistorySource, I really appreciate what you do. I know that your vids take a ton of time and effort to put together. Plus you go the extra mile to always provide quick links in your description allowing us to jump right to what we want to see with ease. You are a model You Tuber as you are more than considerate of your audience. Keep it up.
Thank you for Your kind words. I know that the majority of My viewers appreciate & enjoy these videos & that is what keeps me going. Every now & again I get complaints about game play or am bantered about how I missed a version. What some folks don't understand is how much effort I put into getting footage for some ports. There have been plenty of time where I had to barrow footage from others just to complete a video because I exhausted all other possibilities. So it is encouraging to hear ..
I must say you have put a metric TON of work, time and research into this comparrison project of yours, you've definately made your contribution to the retro gaming community. So Thank You. :)
Another really cool vid - and so soon! Thanks for this!
I remember the Master System version... was pretty good as I recall.
oh, and don't worry, you're better at it than I ever was.
Sega Master System version was the best. Better than the Genesis version, surprisingly enough. But I have to admit that the Atari 2600 BMX event was so much fun to play.
from good folks like Yourself that acknowledge the work that is invested. I appreciate it & Thank you & My subscribers for their continued support. :) You guys make it worth the while.
You're Welcome ! I hope You enjoyed it.
This was one of my first games on the NES and I LOVED IT!!! The only games that gave me any problems were the half-pipe, surfing and skating. I was lousy at half-pipe, didn't know how to do tricks on the surfing and the skating got me the more I progressed because anything could take you out.
awesome !! thanks for the info. I'll book mark it for future reference ! :D Thanks again !
It was an amazing version. I was stunned at how great the quality was with it. The atari 2600 & Lynx version had me rolling, laughing on the BMX. :D
Amazing video! C64 FTW! :D
Thanks for posting this. There is an MSX version, I played it quite often. It is almost the same as the ZX Spectrum version.
Really good showing on the 2600.
Great video as always - and this time extra large. ;-)
Atari 2600: looked better than I thought it would. NES: I remember sucking at this when I was a kid. Genesis: totally radical.
Best Summer break game ever!
Gee, I hope you can make a revised version of this compilation once you get the DOS and Amstrad loading problems sorted out.
the rollerskate soundtrack of amiga looks like something from a police TV show from the 80's
lol as much as I would have loved to have added them the making of this video as it is was a 7 month process on & off. I even had to build the title screen from scratch because I couldn't find a suitable image online. There were a load of things that went into this that many folks do not see. But I have to say with all honesty. This one was my favorite project thus far.
i've seen better
I had the Master System cartridge and was one of the games I most enjoyed myself at the time. We did eight players championships between my brothers and cousins, when we traveled to the beach on vacation. The Master System version is really the best, incredible as it exceeds the Genesis version.
But hey, there is something wrong in your emulator. The Master System Version is way faster than that.
Good old time :)
I am actually surprised by that 2600 version! :D
The Spectrum as usual has the amazing chameleon like characters :D
The Genesis is easily the best looking version but the Surfing music totally killed it.
i didn't see any reptiles
When you hit the seagull on the NES version, that's pure Rare Ltd. programming for you: the sound effect it makes is the same as when you attack certain enemies in the first Wizards & Warriors game (1987).
Wow what an epic vid! Looks like the Genesis has by far the best graphics and good to see the Apple GS version - looks like a very faithful C-64 port with better graphics. But for me by far the best was the c-64, what a classic.
This game was great on the Atari computer.
The colors on the Amstrad version of Footbag make it look like the guy has a chunk missing from the side of his neck.
Kind of impressive to see the difference between the Apple II and IIGS versions. I always wanted a GS, but couldn't afford it. It was quite the machine back in its day.
YES! Played the hell outta this on C64.
EPIC
The master system version is capable of producing FM sound
Horizontal hunger is for grommets
The surfing event from the Atari 2600 port is also missing, but it does exist.
this game came with my c64 so it was the first game I ever played :D
the graphics still look very charming and the music is a classic
nostalgia !!!
Some times, I can't help but getting fascinated at how nice looking can be the Apple ][ low res graphics mode if used correctly.
Well, thank goodness the PCE/TG-16 didn't get saddled with a port too!
You are welcome. It is a very useful website. I used it quite often.
What's the piece played in the intro?
you did better than i could, which is saying something
I really like the Genesis version. It was the first version of CG I played. I just wish they would have included Flying Disk
Why is the Surfing on the Atari Lynx version backwards?
One hour oh no I'm gonna be late for work!
that's good to know. I searched for that version for weeks & it never turned up. I'm kind of hoping that someone can post a reply with the footage. :D
Great video! I prefer the NES version by far. The controls seem a lot tighter than the other versions.
I think there is an error in the intro. It said apart from Amstrad CPC when CPC was in there should say apart from DOS just like the other part says. lol.
Despite of the missing of the “flying disc” event, I think that the Genesis version is the best.
lazy vesion amiga kicked it's ass
It looks quite dated, but I remember being blown away by how good of a job EPYX did on the 2600 in terms of graphics and sound considering the limitations of a (then) 10 year old system.
yes. I felt that the whole scope of the game could not be explored with only 1 or 2 events each.
I could never, ever land a front flip. I swear it was impossible.
^_^ Watch it on the phone while on Your lunch break ! :D
The atari 2600 version was my favorite game at the time. The BMX racing event is one of the best Atari games all by itself. When I've tried other versions I've been dissapointed since the BMX event is so different on them.
Better make popcorn.. This is a LONG one !
The 2600 Bmx game is really fun instead of trying to copy the others they said lets make something fun the 2600 can do!
is that your longest video
why casio name is showed in this games?
lol No.. I was able to get footage for 3 events on the CPC. But was unable to get any for DOS. But I guess it's just as well. If I were able to gather all of the footage I wanted this video would have been an hour & 30 minutes long. >_
mega drive i played too much !!
I've played quite a few ports and I prefer the NES version. I didn't say the others suck, I just said that I like NES port a lot more because of the controls. A lot of the ports were too slow, some were too fast. Graphically the NES port isn't the best but I enjoyed the gameplay the most.
What happened to the PSP / PS3 versions actually? anyone knows? - System 3 planned Summer Games and Calif games remakes.
The PSP version was developed but cancelled before release. No info on the PS3 version.
@@GamingHistorySource :(
ive got to say i find the atari 2600 one off the most playable versions off this game.
maybe because its simplified to the basic game mechanics.
no ocean spray noise, no smaller game play area to get in the golden gate bridge back drop.
it just works.
definetly prefer it over the zx spectrum or amstrad versions.
where i think the atari lynx & other versions are let down, theres no sound when the ball is kicked etc over the music, which disconects from the game & makes the experience a bit boring
i liked the genesis version tidy graphics like.
but you'll no beat the good old c64 for playability.
2:57.....did the...the player just crash OFFSCREEN?!.......either that was a bug or...
Lynx version the best.
C64 most polished, from 8-bit computers.
Looks like the SEGA Genesis version is rushed and they cared more about putting their short deadline time towards graphics over putting the full game on the cart.
How can you even say that man lol You can only tell that if you played them all.
I played several and aside from having to adjust for each a bit, it was not a big deal.
Master System version was the best.
C64 version is also brilliant.
2600 is surprisingly very good.
The genesis version should have been much better.
Wow, you did NOT spend any time with the Lynx version before recording this, did you? The emulation was bad, that's for sure... but aside from that, you didn't learn any of the controls for the halfpipe, which essentially to earn a high-score, all you just do is a simple back & forth turn & grab as you keep gaining momentum. As for the downhill BMX, it's like an early version of "Trials HD"... you should have at least played it a few times to learn the controls first.
I had the Lynx version and the emulation shown here is not accurate at all. The sound particularly is terrible.
When you are looking for MSX games try generation-msx(dot)nl, a great database where you can find easily any information of a certain game that was published on the MSX system.
I played all versions. The best is C=Commodore 64, followed by Amiga version. All other versions are copy of the C=64 version.
You really need some experts, as said by the Lynx guys there are awesome scores available, I aced everything except footbath, eg best remark on BMX "as good as james"
I never understand why Genesis don´t have Flying disc.
BTW the best version is Master System.
Probably since NovoTrade (the developer for the Genesis port) used a 4 MB ROM chip instead of an 8 MB one. If so, that cart would be more expensive, too.
just lazy...it's not like the megadrive could not fit it in..the master system did
C64 best version
Music on the Mega Drive version is horrid.
The Amiga version appears to be a disappointment because the only difference between it and the ST version is the better audio but the Apple //gs tops it with its Ensoniq sound chip. The Genesis version's audio sounds like the typical Atari Games arcade game with the YM2151 audio chip although that's not the YM chip that's in the Genesis.
I think the uploader needs training wheels before playing this game..
