Undercover in India's Most Notorious Black Market (I Got Caught!)

  • I got caught filming undercover in India's most notorious black market - Heera Panna Bazaar in Mumbai. The market is famous for the sale of counterfeit luxury designer goods including handbags, watches, shoes, sunglasses, perfume, and shoes. You'll find all world's biggest designer brands there like Gucci, Rolex, Dolce & Gabbana, Hermes, Louis Vuitton, Chanel, Christian Dior, and more.
Heera Panna Shopping Centre (हीरा पन्ना शॉपिंग सेंटर) actually started out as India's first Grey Market where Indians could buy luxury and premium goods that weren't yet available in India. Everyone, including Bollywood celebrities, used to shop there. But the market has suffered due to brands opening stores in India, and online retail. Now it's transformed in a counterfeit designer goods market.
Every few years it's raided by various Indian authorities. But despite that it continues to operate openly. They even have spotters located at the doors to spot for Police or cameras - I found that out first hand and had to quickly leave!
You can find the Heera Panna Shopping Centre on Google Maps goo.gl/maps/YXekkaEXBwus2p4Y6.

The Rolex's wrist band broke straight away after filming! That's typical for these counterfeit goods, so always bargain because there's minimum a 100% markup. I gave it to my Dad to tinker with because he's a watch fan.

It's one thing to make a video of himself getting scammed or pointing out to an area where fake products are sold to alert people, but to enter these locations on purpose to examine and investigate further and talk about how they avoid raid etc. am not sure is a wise thing Tourist visas don't allow certain activities , he is a foreigner unless he has a different visa now. Hey, nice work!
I came across your video randomly and I’d like to share my experience.
I proudly own some real expensive handbags out of which my most go to and fav are FENDI KAN I baguette and a PRADA JACQUARD SYMBOLE.
I went to Dubai night market last year and there discovered such place. I was so startled to see all these bags on a cheaper scale, although I was carrying mine original😅
Even the shop owners might’ve thought that I have purchased like this, but no, they’re not!
(I’m a bag fetish, and I like spending on handbags, and I work hard for that!)
Well..I’d never go to places like this again.
I never knew places like this exists more!😅

About 20 years ago I bought a 'replica' IWC watch in a Kuala Lumpur market. It was gorgeous and cost £20. A colleague I was with couldn't believe I had spent so much as he bought a Rolex for £12. My watch had a 'leather' strap with lovely metal clasp that broke after about a week. I tried to get a replacement strap and discovered the strap dimensions were non-standard and a suitable strap would have been about £100.

Its amazing how fast all those stalls can disappear, however I'm pretty sure the authorities in the trucks were turning a blind eye to a lot of things lol

I don't believe in buying pretentious over priced designer brands - often made in sweatshops. No, I buy from op shops, many of which still have brands made in NZ. Everything I own, inside and outside my house came from op shops, from gardening tools and plant pots to furniture, bedding, pots and cutlery, clothes.....everything. I recycle everything.

My experience of watching Turkey change is that in the 80’s I could go to the market and buy gorgeous local crafted clothes, material, foods. But when I returned with my children in mid 2000’s after a gap of about 10 years, all the markets sold were counterfeit items. Mikes upon miles of counterfeit jeans that bore no resemblance to the real ones apart from a label sewn on. And the teas, spices and Turkish delight was all mass produced and pre-boxed. More tourists putting higher demand on the industry in the now sprawling tourist areas is mainly to blame for this. Also the difference in how I was treated from being a teen and then mid twenties had also changed. Manners had left the area. I was propositioned for a night of entertainment in front of my children many times. I responded by telling them they bring shame to themselves and their family by speaking to a mother that way.
In Turkey, they know tourism is ruining their country, but they have grown to rely on it and the attitude towards foreigners has changed. I still made friends with locals, but with many there was always a catch like can I stand CD’s or tapes of rock music out to them. That was a common one. The next time I Go, I will go to a more out of the way place, a village area & see if that holds the same values Turkey pre popular tourism took over.

That is why you buy branded items in their respective stores not just anywhere. In india, you will see street vendors selling adidas, reebok and other t-shirts, wouldn't call it a scam; because anyone buying there knows they are fake. It is definitely illegal but wouldn't call it a scam.

You'll be lucky if you're not demonetized for this one, Karl. I'm a watch guy and the watch channels rarely run fake vs real watch content because they get demonetized. Interesting stuff for sure. I ordered a G-Shock recently because I like them and would rather have a real G-Shock than a fake watch.
