- Are you an English-speaker looking to move to Vienna or anywhere else in Austria? Perhaps you want to learn German? Well, if you come to Austria you'll find that the Austrian German accent is quite different from the German spoken in Germany or the German taught in language classes. So here are three shortcuts to help you understand us Austrians and especially people in Vienna more easily. Thank you so much- I am so envious- you speak English so well & make it look so easy. My friends freak when they learn I can read Russian-basically,it really is Greek to them,I tell them! But I was inspired to learn TRUE Austrian by my favourite & only truly Euro classic rapper/rocker Falco ! I know that dates me ( really tells my age!) but I don't care,the way he manipulated so many languages& "Austrianisms", into his art, especially Vienna-Austrianisms,leaves me in awe. I try to learn by listening but without Context & Proper Explanations ,like the ones you give, it is so impossible. I want to come live in Vienna for a year & see his "grabe", is that right, his beautiful gravesite? But I want to learn as much as I can when I come. I'm older,about 48, but I look in my 30's,I think I'd pass as looking like and BE a great student( I pick up languages like other people pick up their mail ). So what,as advice,if you would not mind a recommendation,should be my 1st course of action ? Like I said,a year in Austria to learn as much as I can- can you give me some ideas? Books I could start here with ? Best places to stay( if younger people don't mind an avid older learner around, I did find the student house near Vienna- I think? - where you can stay & be enrolled for a year for not too much money/Euros,right? Super video, I hob im joah 2005 Deutsch gelernt in Sri Lanka. Woa mal in Deutschland e. Daun bi 9 joah I in Tschechien gelebt neben dea Grenze von Österreich (weinviertel) hob viele frende vo Österreich, jetzt I spreche Deutsch oaber es is Mix hoch Deutsch und Österreich Deutsch. I bi von Sri Lanka.

There are three reasons why I want to learn Austrian:
1) I am Czech and although our relations were not always the best, we are closer to Austria, than to Germany, I would say, plus Austria simply have marvelous mountains, which are my favourite thing
2) since there is a stronger influence between both lands, compared to Hochdeutsch, there are words that are incomprehensible for them, but perfectly understandable for me, such as "Heisl", "Zwetschke" or "Kren"
3) my good friend is a native German and hates it, when I try to speak classic German, as it is irritating to her ears, so I decided to go for Austrian, which she does not know, so I have a little bit more piece and so I can tell her that I do not speak her Hochdeutsch

Lots of good information here, but you run through the examples/comparisons way too fast! If you're trying to teach us any of this, you need to go slowly, not give us a whole verb conjugation in 5 seconds!

Ultimately my comprehensive skills are far more advanced than my speaking skills but I think that once i would surround myself with nothing but native speakers gradually it would even out! But i also have this feeling that I would reach maybe even native speaking status if i had the pleasure to always learn from this amazing young lady who’s teaching in this one particular video . Not just because she seems very intelligent plus she’s native but her English is very flawless and i must also admit that I developed a crush on our teacher here as well. Incase she’s taken already I apologize but if not then I definitely do not apologize because either way she is amazing person!
Everyone seems to mix up the "Austrian German" and the "Austro-Bavarian language".
Those are not the same!
since Austrian Standard German gets more and more flushed down the toilet, also by Austrian newspapers and television, but the dialects survives.

Great video, very helpful! (but please next time slow down the bits where you're pronouncing the different words, since you just raced through them in this video :) I actually learned German in Vienna, but they never taught us how to speak "Austrian", just Hochdeutsch pretty much.
"Austrian" is a dialect very similar to Bavarian dialect. In hotels, restaurants, trains, offices, etc everybody speaks Austrian Standard German but not dialect. I am German and when I'm in Austria I feel no difference being in Bavaria.
@@helilebon2383 Yea, everyone in the world mixes up the terms "Austrian German", which is a different Standard of the German language (like e.g. Germany's Standard German and Swiss Standard German) and "Austrian" aka "Austro-Bavarian" which is a West-Germanic language, closely related to German, Dutch and Alemannic, that is spoken by around 8-9 million people in Austria and by 3-4 million people in Bavaria (hence the name "Austro-Bavarian")
These would be great. It helps me I'm learning the language so I could find my dad he is from Austria and I'm a Filipino/ Austrian. I was born here in the Philippines. I never been to Austria but soon.

Okay, so if I speak German German instead of Austrian German in Vienna, people will understand what I'm talking about, but it might become a problem for me - as they will answer me with Austrian German? (which is probably why it's a good idea to grasp the Austrian German in the first place?) :D
People will be able to understand your German German because we're very used to hearing it a lot. For example, films and TV series are usually dubbed by voice actors from Germany. But you did spot well that we usually reply in Austrian dialects because it's our usual way of speaking. If you're having issues understanding someone, don't be afraid to ask them to repeat what they said "langsam und deutlich" (slowly and enunciated clearly) because we may not realize how different our accent sounds to you. - The Wine
Side note: Movies and TV shows are dubbed in super clean high German, which removes a lot of the characterization. This is why I and a lot of other people below 40 prefer to watch shows in English, if possible. We learn English in school and then via the internet (TH-cam, Netflix, etc.) hone our English skills. (And as a software developer all my reading material is English, too.)
I did not realize the reason the Austrian Language sounds softer and more singsong! This is a huge realization for me. Can you give some advice on where to listen to Austrian German online as I'm in the US? I'm studying "German" German right now (just moving into intermediate level) but my heart belongs to Wien and I plan on going back. Tiktok? Austrian TH-camrs? About the non-enthusiastic nature of Austrian, we have the phrase "Des is ka Learchal Schas", meaning "This is no lark fart". It means it is something huge (figuratively or literally).
Note that the "al" end-syllable in "Lerchal" is a way in Austrian to make something cute (Lerche -> Lerchal). In high German the end-syllable "chen" is more usual. (Haus (house) -> Häuschen/Hausal/Heisal) I don't think there is that kind of way to make something cute in English, or is there? I think adding a "y" isn't as universally applicable?

Hi Mitzi, that is a traditional Austrian nickname for people called Maria (the German version of Mary). It's pronounced Me (like give ME that) t (like the t in tea) z (like in zoo) i (like the in England). So Me-tz-e if you're pronouncing it English.

Sie übertreiben die Unterschiede zwischen Deutsch in D und Deutsch in AU. Vor allem verwechseln Sie die österreichischen Dialekte mit Standard Österreichischem Deutsch. In Reden sagt kein Politiker "Wir san" (außer Werner Kogler). Sondern alle sagen "Wir sind" (manchmal akustisch verkürzt zu "wir sinn"). Bitte vermitteln Sie Ausländern keinen falschen Eindruck. "Jänner, Marille, Schlagobers, das geht sich nicht aus" dies sind zum Beispiel Austriazismen. Es gibt noch mehrere. "Wir san" sagt man auch in Südbayern, wenn man dialekt-gefärbt spricht, was nicht immer der Fall ist.

Austrian German sounds to me not niedlicher als Hochdeutsch, eher ländlich geprägt oder so. Ich würde sagen, wenn jemand seine Mundart spricht, dann macht er einen trügerischen Eindruck, nicht so intelligent zu sein, was aber natürlich nicht der Wahrheit entspricht.
You mix up Austrian German with Austrian German Dialects. If you speak Standart German witch is at 99,5 % indentical with Austrian Standard German everybody will understand you when you don't speak too fast.
