Ever since then I have tried to maintain the ability to be “bilingual” in German, ie Kaiserdeutsch and Austrobayerisch. I think the first tip is extremely helpful, but what I noticed most as an exchange student in Wien was the "ei" difference. It sounded more like a Southern US dialect, pronounced /a/. So "weit" was pronounced more like /waat/. I assume you do another video covering this, so I am going to look for it. Danke!

I remember some very basic German from a high school German course of one year which was many years before you were born, but it is not enough when I want to chat. And I realize now that even if I had continued my studies well in to university German, I would still not understand Viennese! Oh well.

That is very correct! R behind vowels is always vocalised in Standard German. It is not vocalised in some dialects only. But the quality of vocalisations is different throughout the dialects. I would say, Standard German is there very close to Eastern Middle German, but it differs in Austria as well as in Berlin (to give a second example). I would suggest in 'Wirt' for example, if it is /wiat/ in Austrian German, it would become a schwa-sound in Standard German [wıət].
Tyrolean (Austrian) German, much harder: Wirt does not become Wiat but Wirrtt Schmerz does not become Schmeaz but Schmearrzz Bart becomes to Bårrt or Bårrscht packen - påckkn
My grandmother was from Vienna but she rolled her R's, sort of like Italian. Is that more of an old-time thing? She only ever lived in Austria before she came to America in the 1930s so I don't know why should would have had that kind of an accent.

Well, it depends a bit on the dialect you are speaking. For some it is hader and for others not so hard. And it depends on the educational background: if your teachers in school spoke standard german (Hochdeutsch) or made you speak like this, you are more familiar with it and will find it easier. If they spoke dialct, speaking standard german will feel more unnatural and forced.
And i guess it also depends on your attitude 😂. I'm from the vienna area, where speaking standard german has a positiv connotation and most people don't mind speaking it. But other austrians hate standard german (for whatever reason) and sometimes i feel like they would rather cut out their tounge than speak anything other than their own dialect.
@@Esther-jj8ee Because Hochdeutsch is not their language. Hochdeutsch isn't even the native tongue of Austria historically. The old king spoke a different Germanic language but the country transitioned to Hochdeutsch for international purposes.
