Oh my, this was my old washing machine that used to put me to sleep! I remember the days of grabbing my blanket, sitting on the floor and then curling up next to the washer. The sound was very calming for me then. Gives me goosebumps hearing this again after 20+ years.
You're not alone. I'm adoring the sound, and relaxing look of this machine doing it's thing. I grew up in my Grandparents home, and this sound reminds me of being in the basement, with only a few lights dimly lighting the room, and me being on the couch, listening to this sound, and smelling the calming scent of the detergent in the water.

I had a Hotpoint of the same vintage, the only difference was the lack of filter-flo. As I recall, it had something around the rim of the basket instead. Other than the controls being labeled Hotpoint, it worked and sounded identically to a GE. This design lasted GE for decades, it's a shame they abandoned this design. My grandmother had one from the early 60s (with the blue/red cycle dial but it sounded the same), then a 70s version. I grew up with an early 80s version and then my Hotpoint in the 90s. All solid machines. Today the vast majority of laundry appliances are electronic junk that barely use any water and last only five years. I wish I had kept the Hotpoint.
Nice Sounding Machine . I like your recording since there is no commentary . Just the simply eloquently tranquil sounds of the machines cycles . I did notice the need to switch the water level match the load size at the beginning . That happens to be my favorite cycle .
My aunt got 18 years of service out of her old GE washer before the boot ripped and she decided to retire it . Not a bad run at all. Laundromats were full of them in the 70s.

Now the house I live in has one of those crap HE top loaders that do not clean anything. I hate the government for ruining washing machines.
I had a 1993 version of the GE filter-flo until 2001 when the transmission dumped oil on the floor where the washer sat. We got another matching GE set shortly thereafter. It felt cheap compared to the filter-flo but lasted 17 years. We have a Kenmore Elite front loader.
I believe we live in a different generation where instead of people sorting out clothes in the smaller loads they want to just stuff the whole big basket of clothes in these HE machines because they think that they have a bigger barrel and they can hold everything that they would clean everything but that's not the case you still have to sort out clothes just like mother back in the day because it our generation people don't even want to sort clothes that no more and wonder why they don't come out clean.
My parents had a GE/Hotpoint much like this. They purchased it around 1993 or 94 I think. It although had a white slanted console with puffy square push- buttons like the Whirlpool Cleantouch, and a handwash system with the attachable bowl shaped dispenser. It still worked and sounded much like this machine here. Those sounds are nostalgic. It was replaced by a front loader in 2007 or so. As a teen I began to miss it and wanted it back badly but it was long gone for several years before. These videos bring back the memories though.

I miss these washers so bad! My mom had one that lasted for almost 20 years. I foolishly let the garbage man have it. I should have had a new transmission put in it. When I was a kid back in the 1980's, I would go to the local Appliance Store in town with my parents and see these beauties lined up in rows on the showroom floor. If I had known then what I know now and had the money, I would have bought 10 or 15 of these and put them back in storage somehow, and bought extra parts to put back as well. GE washers of today are total junk. I'm getting ready to replace my 2008 set with a new Speed Queen set.

My grandmother had an old GE filter flo with the rotoswirl agitator and a different filter tray than in the video. 11 ish years ago or something like that it started squeaking very, very loudly when it was agitating. Everybody tried so hard to fix it with no luck and it hit the curb. I’m kicking myself so hard now because I only recently realized that all it needed was a little grease on the seal of the bell housing! Sure I was only a wee squirt back then and needed a stepping stool just to see inside but I loved that thing so much! I ended up keeping the agitator but lost it when we moved. Now that I’m kinda in the market, a GE filter flo rotoswirl is my #1 choice (#2 being an old Whirlpool belt drive with a Surgilator). Unfortunately, these things are just so impossible to find.

Only issue with it was if you used the full tub wash when it went to spin drain the water would fly out of the tub and cause a huge mess on the floor. That thing would get clothes clean. She always had to use the shortest wash cycle because her others didn't get dirty and she was afraid it would RIP them the shreds
For sure. I can tell you that when I replaced the filterflo with a Duet front loader the amount of lint in the dryer was 1/5 due to how aggressive the GE was.
Note: They don’t sell parts for GE Filter Flos anymore. If a part breaks, you will probably have to get a new machine. All parts are discontinued I think.
This washer is a WWA8898MAL; you can see the parts still available. The pump and the water inlet were what failed most of the time on mine. Haier/GE still sells these parts.
the bad part is that the water splashes at wrong places when draining at the spin cycle. Glad GE introduced neutral drain when they went to newer models
Speed queen still does. Sure they went to the HE route in 2018 but in 2019 they released a model with the old school wash action. Screw regulations! I have the Hotpoint version of this washer. Did a few repairs here n there. Still works today! I miss the spin drain though.
@@CrestwoodRocks The neutral drain may lengthen the life of the motor thats about all I see good about it, Prefer the old type of spin flushes more of the dirt away by splashing over the retainer rim.. Thats just my opinion

I have always had this thing with listening to washing machines, from very small to the age of 63 which is where I’m at now. One night I just put in the sound of washing machines. Now I listen to it almost every night some nights I just have to listen to music. But the sounds of washing machines washing machines is the best.
All old things in my opinion were simpler and easier and more reliable, unlike the modern day _high efficiency water saving environment friendly_ crap. I mean, todays washers don't even have an agitator, instead they have a crappy spinning disc at the bottom that can hardly turn the clothes over!
Damn.. this is a 90's machine?????????? It looks and sounds and functions like a 70's washer!!!!! I didn't know they were still making them like this in the 90's.... with that flow through and that motor sound.. it sounds a lot like an old Westinghouse washer .. I suspect it's probably equally as good too since its a ge... You are very lucky to have a good machine like this one... I envy you... You know.... I can't stand those HE newer washers of today.. they take forever to wash I mean a 3 to 4 hour wash cycle can be quite normal for them... and after all that time they don't really clean the clothes... actually the reason the newer machines take so long is because they waste time doing absolutely nothing!! Its sort of like this.. start machine... no water first nothing... just waits.. and waits and waits..... after 5 min of waiting... machine starts making noises for.. who knows what.... kaclunk.. klunk.... ha... haa... hummmmmmmmm... thud thud... then drum slowly begins to turn.. very slowly... round........and..........round.......and .........round........ and......... round........and....... round. .... and..........stop.... Wait 5 more minutes... nothing.... Then drum starts spinning slow again no water.... very slowly.... Round..... and round ..... For 5 minutes spinning slow as molasses... no water... then stops... does nothing for like 4 min... it then repeats this cycle like 8 times... it spends like an hour of doing absolutely nothing ... then the HE washer finally starts to fill with wate.....just boom suddenly stops filling... yup just like how I never finished the word water.. that short... I can spit more than the water an HE washer uses to wash with.... i have a word to say to these drunk stoned manufacturers... um.... hey... last I checked its the water that will clean clothes... now it washes for like 3 hours... with a spit full of water... then finally its time for that first drain and spin... but first it stops.... does nothing... nothing nothing nothing at all.... still nothing... like 25 min of nothing.... then it drains... but only half way to then stop and do nothing some more. Then spin... very slowly... spin.......... and spin..... yup for 4 min.... Then stops... waits.... another 8 min.... drains the rest... eventually it goes into an actual spin... but starts slow... round round round... a tiny weeny bit faster.... round and round for like 4 min... a tiny weeny bit faster... round and round 4 min.... oops!!!! It just stopped...... for no reason.... just to annoy the crap out of its user i guess... because there is absolutely no reason to stop... but it did and does..... nothing for 8 min... then repeats this slow spin for a while and then a little faster until after 20 min of picking up full spin speed it finally reaches full speed... but what I don't understand with modern HE washers is .. what the he'll is it doing when it spins like 3 mph with no water... for frigging an hour!!!!! its literally doing nothing!!!!! And if you add that total time up of doing nothing its like 3 out of a 4 hour wash... wtf???? I miss these old washing machines... these washing machine manufacturers of today better get their act together...
Any chance you still monitor this channel? Could you show me how to change the belt? I took the motor off to do it, now the shaft sees longer, and will not meet the studs to bolt back.
i haven’t yet asked how the water is recirculated during the agitation cycles so is there a diverter valve that is normally in the recirculate position and only switches to the drain position during the spin cycles?
abcsd1254 ok so this means the water going to the spout to fill up the tub passes through the pump (cold water goes through one path while hot water flows through another path) and during the agitation cycle one of the pumps pull water through a different path of the pump to be recirculated and during the spin cycles a 2nd pump drains the water through a fourth path
That same washer model and matching dryer appeared in the movie “Dennis the Menace,” which was released in 1993. That model in the movie contained four Speed buttons, Suds Saver, separate Delicate cycle, Auto Soak 30 and 15 minutes, followed by Pre-Wash, Extra Cleaning Cycle on Regular. The matching dryer contained four Temperature and Start buttons, Signal Volume knob, Auto Dry Permanent Press and Regular cycles with Dryness Selector, Normal Dry symbol, Cool Down and Extra Care on Permanent Press, 70 minute Time Dry with 45 minute Regular, 20 minute Damp Dry and 10 minute Tumble Press with timer symbols.
The purpose of the filter is to collects dirt and soils from the clothes, so that it would keep the drain pipe from clogging up in the future during spin. This would help save money on having to call out a plumber for drain cleaning.
My grandparents lived in a small town and were small business owners. They supported the other local businesses. They always had Chevrolet cars, Zenith televisions and GE appliances because they were friends with the owners of those dealers. The result was they kept buying GE appliances.
Had it not been for the shallow tub on this series, I would have bought a GE set. I waited when my Kenmore washer (made by Whirlpool) broke, & replaced that washer with the most expensive Hotpoint (the GE equivalent was a mid level with similar features) that was redesigned in 1995 or 1996, with the deeper tub, & single piece vein agitator. Big mistake. The redesigned washers were complete junk, & GE never contacted me that there was a recall on the washer, & the washer was registered with them. After the tub brake broke on that model, the tub never fully locked down after that. I had a GE midcrowave oven, & that was junk too. I have lost faith in GE, as their appliances are now junk. I would be surprised if Haier could make improvements to the GE appliances (I doubt it, as their company is already known for poor quality). This type of washer was built well. I just couldn't accept the shallow tub, as I would have to do more laundry in it, than with one with a deeper tub. That was why I didn't get Maytag either in the day.

Have you checked with used appliance? They have Kenmore 80 series and they washes clothes as good as the kenmore.

The top of this machine has some of the most solid feeling metal I have felt on a washer. No china pride steel here. That motor has a growl to it.
The downside is the porcelain is very brittle and there’s rust setting in sadly

The agitator is normal-sized; the big thing(s) on top are the filter basket and the liquid fabric softener dispenser (which he removed at one point).
Does it recycle the water? Is that why there's water pouring in during the entire wash cycle?

I had an early 70s Westinghouse top load washer. I think these GE machines were better though.
These were in production until 1995 when they built their whirlpool copycat.

Hello! I believe I left the motor in place and moved the motor coupler. I cannot recall offhand.

Hays Coleman No it’s a pump that has four ports and is driven by the belt. It is not pleasant to change that belt, either.
abcsd1254 ok so this means the water going to the spout to fill up the tub passes through the pump (cold water goes through one path while hot water flows through another path) and during the agitation cycle one of the pumps pull water through a different path of the pump to be recirculated and during the spin cycles a 2nd pump drains the water through a fourth path

The agitator is not so big you’re looking at the filter plate and the fabric softener dispenser that is sitting on top of the agitator.

Filters lint and other crap.
The purpose of the filter is to collects dirt and soils from the clothes, so that it would keep the drain pipe from clogging up in the future during spin. This would help save money on having to call out a plumber for drain cleaning.

At the time, I never could understand why someone would buy this mess as opposed to a Kenmore set
My grandparents lived in a small town and were small business owners. They supported the other local businesses. They always had Chevrolet cars, Zenith televisions and GE appliances because they were friends with the owners of those dealers. The result was they kept buying GE appliances.
Had it not been for the shallow tub on this series, I would have bought a GE set. I waited when my Kenmore washer (made by Whirlpool) broke, & replaced that washer with the most expensive Hotpoint (the GE equivalent was a mid level with similar features) that was redesigned in 1995 or 1996, with the deeper tub, & single piece vein agitator. Big mistake. The redesigned washers were complete junk, & GE never contacted me that there was a recall on the washer, & the washer was registered with them. After the tub brake broke on that model, the tub never fully locked down after that. I had a GE midcrowave oven, & that was junk too. I have lost faith in GE, as their appliances are now junk. I would be surprised if Haier could make improvements to the GE appliances (I doubt it, as their company is already known for poor quality). This type of washer was built well. I just couldn't accept the shallow tub, as I would have to do more laundry in it, than with one with a deeper tub. That was why I didn't get Maytag either in the day.
Dude these washers last for ever! if well cared for like not overloading or uneven loads. These are more reliable than whirlpool Kenmore direct drive.
