- Here’s a full cycle video of the super wash cycle on my 1963 RCA Whirlpool Imperial Mark XII washer. This one of the earliest Whirlpool washers that features the super wash cycle and all Whirlpool built washers from 1963 to the mid to late 90’s featured the super wash cycle with a partial drain.
Lovely washing machine. Love the recirculating lint filter. Every washer should have one like this.
Yep, filters out pet hair which is good if you are on septic or the plumbing in your home is a bit iffy with lint.

This wasn’t too long after I rebuilt the transmission. Next, I’ll need to source all the tools to replace the center post seals and bearings.
This is such a beautiful machine! The color is amazing and it’s in such great shape too! I wish they still made appliances in different colors than white and gray.
Indeed, literally have seen no others like it around and it could very well be the only one that’s known to exist but there’s bound to be another one somewhere out there in the wild but has to surface.
I wish they brought the belt drive and direct drives back.

That machine brings back some memories. My Mom had a Whirlpool imperial mark XII. Hers was newer though. She bought hers in 1967. It had the magic-clean lint filter instead of the brush waterfall filter. She had it for 20 years before she gave it to my sister. Not bad for 20 years of laundry for a family of four.
This machine was in service from 1963 to 2005 and sat for 14 years in a vacant house before being bought by a collector in the San Diego area. I don’t think this saw very much use since I rebuilt the transmission earlier this spring and the gears had hardly any wear on them which indicates it wasn’t used very much or was always lightly loaded which certainly put less wear and tear on the drive train on this machine.
Didn’t the 1967 Whirlpool Imperial Mark XII you grew up with have the wood paneling on the front? There was a 1968 Whirlpool Imperial Mark XII that was for sale a few years ago with wood paneling on the front here in the Southern California area but am not certain if the ‘67 Mark XII’s had wood paneling on the front or not.
@@seana806 No. It didn't have wood paneling. The buttons were horizontal. 5 buttons for agitate and spin. Three for agitate two for spin. 5 buttons for water temperature. A red indicator light that glowed for the magic clean lint filter, a rotary k ob for the water level. It was variable with a hand wash level that put the agitate and spin speeds on low. The light was under the control panel but it lit the the timer know and turned on when you set the the cycle. Oh and the cabinet was avocado.
Did your 1967 Imperial Whirlpool have the White Super Surgilator ? I think that might have been 1968 but not sure.

This is a good one mic picking up all the sounds hear that transmission how smooth it sounds hum of the AC motor.
This probably the only video here on TH-cam getting the full details from the sounds, hum of the motor, gets to the point without any sort of intro or introduction. Not many proper full cycle videos are out there of these older Whirlpool belt drive machines.
@@seana806I have a Speed Queen AWN432 motor is really hums sometimes I worry it's going to burn out hasn't. Can't find these old washers like yours when the low water washers came out people noticed their cloths were not getting clean, they bought up all the old used washers. The used appliance stores are full of these 1st generation junk low water usage front loaders, and top loaders.

It’s interesting how the motor starts up along with everything engaging 2 seconds later. All Whirlpool and Kenmore belt drive washers are like that.
@@seana806 If I recall, I think that's a feature of the two solenoid wig-wag assembly on the transmission. Motor starts up unloaded, solenoid engages shift lever, agitation starts. Whirlpool/Kenmore were also the only washers I know of that paused action to drain prior to going into spin cycle. All other belt driven models span out the water.
@@ArtCooler1 a Maytag just reverses the direction of the motor to spin the water out, Maytag went with that design to eliminate as many parts as possible. Might explain why many are still around to this day decades later.

I acquired this machine back in July of 2020 and has came a long way since I’ve had it. It was working when I got it but decided to look into why the automatic dispensers weren’t working and essentially had to take everything all apart, while everything was all apart I had to address a few things and took quite a bit of taking it apart and putting it back together to get everything just right. Recently had to have rust holes in the outer tub welded and since that has been done, everything works and doesn’t leak. Definitely plan on making more videos of this machine but it all depends on how much background noise is.

Fantastic Sound ( it talks) and action - the paint and white plastic/rubber are spectacular! RCA/Whirlpool and late 50's early 60's GE filter flo's with the lighting - dials and chrome trim...are truly functional works of art. Its sad these companies can't make true retro models... simple, functional, and actually got your clothes clean! .....They would have waiting lists.
I am pretty sure if Whirlpool started making machines like this again, they’d have no complaints about them. Only people who’d complain about them would be the folks who don’t have common sense to load a machine properly along with using the correct amount of detergent and such.
@@seana806 They...(whoever makes Whirlpool now) would sell out of them so fast there would probably be months if not years of back log... and they could set the price high so that even if the machine worked for 30 years they still would have made a profit. But "they" are too stupid and consumers keep buying expensive complicated trash that breaks early and not demanding easier and better quality ....that's life now.

My sister had a 1986 Whirlpool. It worked some similar to this. It had a "Magic Lint Filter" that would clog up. Great washer taking everything into consideration.
I think that was the last year of the ‘Magic Lint Filter’ since 1986 was the last year for the belt drive machines in the US, 1991 was the last year for belt drive production for the South American market.

This is a favorite out of all the machines I own. There will be more videos of this machine in the future, but will probably have to take it out of service once my soon to be Maytag A806 set is up and running since there’s some rust on the outer tub I’ll need to address and will have to figure out on how to replace the center post bearings since I don’t have a be puller or installer for the new bearings I have for it.

Absolutely stunning machine love the video nice to see it. I remember this same exact machine in “WHO’S MINDING THE STORE” starring Jerry Lewis
I’ve never seen that movie from start to finish but I did watch a trailer for that movie and saw my set in that movie. Only difference between that set and mine is the dryer is gas since it has the removable lower access panel while the electric versions did not but otherwise is the same set as mine. It’s a shame that there aren’t any others around since I haven’t seen any others in the archives on AW except for the 1964 versions and combo52 on AW has a 1964 Mark XII set in his collection.
Such a marvel of electromechanical technology.
It’s amazing on how they were able to achieve the same tasks without the use of a single computer chip anywhere but yet, would run and run for decades. While computers can be reliable, they degrade with time and eventually will just give up the ghost without any sort of warning signs whatsoever.

Thanks! Definitely plan on making more videos but when that will happen I don’t know, one thing is for certain is I plan on making a few videos of the vacuums I have and actually plan on starting a vacuum cleaner repair business sometime this month since that is another hobby/interest of mine and don’t take up as much space as major appliances do.

@@roblitchke4886 Maytag also used the terminology "cotton/sturdy" for the 1990s (please correct me if I'm mistaken).
I believe my aunt had a machine very similar to this one, the removable lint trap/brush was difficult to clean but overall the machine did a great job washing clothes.
I bet it did a superior job at washing and rinsing clothes.
@@seana806 It washed very well but my aunt hated the brush lint trap, she called it the nail buster and had me do it whenever I visited.
@@heathwirt8919 I usually get as much lint off as I can by hand, then once a month I’d run it through the dishwasher on the top rack to get it spotless. Haven’t had any issues by doing that.

Absolutely! I was a huge Maytag fan a few years ago and since I’ve expanded my horizons I realized there were many other good machines out there including these very rare gems I’ve literally seen no where else and I believe this is the only 1963 RCA Whirlpool Imperial Mark XII set that’s known since I’ve literally seen no others around.

Well I love this Whirlpool washing machine I love that special woo woo sound my mother had an old Whirlpool but it didn't make the woo woo sound like this one however my grandmother had an old Kenmore and it sure did and when it began to spend it really sounded great
The Whirlpool your mother had was either a direct drive or had a replacement belt which didn’t generate the woo woo sound.

Absolutely! They haven’t made any good machines since and probably won’t make appliances like they used to for quite some time until someone like me uses designs of the past since I am about fed up with the quality and reliability of today’s appliances.

Indeed, need to make more videos of this machine in the future but probably won’t be until I find someone who can 3D print a new cam assembly since it separated in half on me earlier this year. Made a few repair attempts but none of them were entirely successful since it wasn’t working properly on the gentle cycle and just want everything to be in working order before putting it back into service.

Never get tired of seeing thing machine operate along with the sound it makes. Whirlpool belt drive washers are probably the most nostalgic sounding of machines ever made with all the sounds they make.

Was the machine you grew up with the Imperial or the Imperial Mark XII model?
@@seana806I never realized whirlpool made machines like these back in the day. Because we had the same lady kenmore up till 83 from 1962. We bought a whirlpool back in 82. 83 and they stopped making the lighted panels at that point
I also remember my mother say she went through three washers raising us kids ; w/ our family.
Probably were used into oblivion since there was lots of laundry to do.
It still gets me how quickly these fill up. They waste no time like the modern machines do.
These machines were built during a time when energy regulations weren’t a thing and you could do whatever you wanted but ever since the oil embargo of 1973, everyone has been paranoid about energy consumption/usage and things have been in a downward spiral ever since, many Baby Boomers like the ones on AW complain on why they don’t make things like they used to but yet are very left wing (along with their millennial children) which doesn’t allow for quality appliances to be made since energy regulations dictate what you can and can’t do all thinks to the Baby Boomer and Millennial generations and Gen X and Gen Z have to put up with their crap since that’s how elitist the Boomers and Millennials are.

The Whirlpool that built your machines then isn't that same company today.
Yeah they are still in Benton Harbor but the mindset is different. It's a whole new "culture" over there and I think it's a lousy one. They don't care about what they build anymore just get it out the door it seems.
Thankfully there are still many examples of these fine machines running and TH-cam is also a blessing that we can see them running.
I actually was a friend with someone by the name of Jamie Jeffery (agitatorjamie on TH-cam) (pulsator on AW) on Facebook awhile back but he unfriended me and blocked me since I commented on how Whirlpool doesn’t build quality appliances anymore since he works at Whirlpool and he blocked me. Even sent him a photo of my 1963 RCA Whirlpool Imperial Mark XII set in messenger awhile back since he’s on AW and works at Whirlpool but didn’t say anything and that just tells you that Whirlpool doesn’t give a damn about quality anymore. If Whirlpool doesn’t change their ways then I’ll use all of their designs they had back in the late 50’s and 60’s and will have a fairly large monopoly on the appliance market/industry since manufacturers have abandoned quality and if people don’t want to pay for a quality appliance then it’s too damn bad since I’ll be the only one making quality appliances that will run for decades.
I believe he is, surprised John Lefever hasn’t jumped down his throat since his engineering (along with everyone else’s engineering at Whirlpool) has caused hell with John Lefever and the owners of the machines he has to fix since he doesn’t care about engineering a quality product anymore. He’s just like the rest of everyone else on AW who is a liberal who always contradicts themselves since their views and opinions don’t allow for anything quality to made again.

Some of them have real phobias about gas ranges. I've heard them talk about if they could ban them they would.
Yes natural gas can cause an explosion but you will smell a gas leak. I've been taking that risk my entire life and don't have any plans on cooking on electric anytime soon.

Working like a champ, looks like. How cool! Would love to get my old '79 Kenmore repaired and back running, although even the Whirlpool I'm using now is 15-17y old, and a Kenmore dryer dad got new in '87 that I ended up with back in '96. So nice to see these old units maintained and kept going.
These were in service from 1963 to 2005, only repairs it had from what I could tell was a new belt and pump. Everything worked when I acquired it back in 2020 but knew I would have to go through it sooner than later. Basically I tried to remove the hose that goes from the automatic dispensers to the T pipe snapped off and basically had to take the entire machine apart to get to it. Everything basically snowballed from there and ended up having to remove the outer tub because of pinholes from rust. Literally had this machine apart at least 20 times since I’ve owned it but haven’t had to make any major repairs it in awhile, last repair I did to it was JB-Weld came assembly back together in February.
@@seana806 Despite the recent work on it, it's a testament to quality construction and longevity. Hope it cruises on for another good long time.
Should run for many, many more years. Just have to put it through it’s paces before I put it back into service. Tested and ran it through 3 cycles but plan on running it through a few more just to be sure. Been busy over the past few months, also going to try to pick up a 1966 Ford Galaxie 500 this summer and it does need some work but since I am mechanically savvy, could easily bring it back to life and do most of the work myself.

@@JadeDragon407 I think I may have spoke too soon, went to try the delicate cycle out this evening and it didn’t seem to want to engage, as soon as I pulled the timer out, the breaker tripped. Definitely some sort of electrical issue I’ll have to work out. Looked at the timer cams and they appear to open and close as intended, will have to look into it more tomorrow.
I think my dad had the same machine or it was just a direct drive. Thank you very much for uploading this machine he's in good shape!

a washer that actually pays for itself
This machine has probably payed for it many times over, probably would pay for itself even more if it had the optional suds saver on it. If paired up with a gas dryer, the set would basically be free since it would literally pay for itself that many times over.
I have a 2001 Whirlpool washer. Lets just say I am never getting rid of the thing. It still runs like new. I guess mine is one of the last of the "old" generation.
@@jonathonjaney1948 Whirlpool made the direct drives from 1981 to 2011, made up them up until 2016 in the stacked units.
That washing machine is three times older than me but runs just as good as brand new
Absolutely! This machine works very well, currently not in service until I get a new cam assembly 3D printed since the original separated earlier this year unfortunately. It’s entirely possible to print a new cam assembly, will take some time though.

I will eventually, but have to work out a few bugs since I had to make a repair to the timer back in January, ran it through a quick cycle earlier this month but the weather doesn’t seem to be wanting to cooperate since it’s been quite rainy here in California.

Your washer starts to agitate just as it should. It makes the proper singing sound while it agitates. I believe the clutch needs adjusting because it took too long to reach spin speed.
I think the clutch was ‘breaking in’ so to speak since it no longer does that. Made a few adjustments to it since then and seems to work like it should.
That noise which occurred when
washer refilled after partial drain
was the jolt from the basket .
I think that was from the transmission since it was rebuilt that spring and installed a few new parts in it.
I haven't even seen the video yet but great job!
Thanks! Everything seems to be working as it should but one thing I’ll need to do is replace the bearings but they seem to be holding up for now and have a new bearing and seal kit for it.

Hot water wash. All the temperatures are built into the timer.

The turn over is a bit more aggressive with the Super Surgilator but the SS tends to kick up a bit more suds though.

I just love the old machines, they did a better job at getting the clothes clean.
For sure, Speed Queen is probably the only machine made today that does a good job at cleaning clothes but my only gripe about them is the first slow spin which doesn’t spin out enough of the soapy water and detergent resulting in itchy clothes since they weren’t rinsed properly.

Bring back the woo-woos! I love the way these vintage Kenmore/Whirlpools sounded. I would buy this in a heartbeat if it were available today. They don't make them like they used to, that's for sure.
These Whirlpool/Kenmore belt drive washers were made before my time but still am nostalgic for the way they sound. I would buy this as well if it were to be made but sadly people are simply too cheap to pay for quality these days combined with a multitude of things such as government intervention and corporate greed are why they don’t make things like they used to. I simply don’t see anything made after the 2010’s being around in the future since the electronics in most cars and appliances will have degraded from years of sitting and will be impossible to get going again since all the parts will be obsolete/NLA/discontinued in the future. 21st engineering simply cannot compare to engineering and design from the mid 20th century.
Things simply are under-built and under-engineered compared to many years ago. There are many reasons why they don’t make anything like they used to and it comes down to that consumers are simply too cheap to pay for quality as my 1963 Whirlpool set would be $3500 in today’s money, greedy corporations since they always want you to keep buying from them every 5 years so they line their pockets, last but not least is government intervention since they try to make everything “efficient” as possible but usually circumvent the efficiency since today’s machines in some instances have to be ran more than once to get anything cleaned properly. Government intervention and interference has made cars skyrocket in price in the past few decades since all the safety and emissions BS adds thousands to the price along with the infotainment crap which is nothing more than a distraction, I’d gladly would spend the money on a new 1966 Ford LTD if it were to made tomorrow with a $30,000 price tag since I basically would get more car for dollar than a would with a contemporary Ford Fusion or anything made today that’s more expensive.

Notice how wobbly the tub is compared to this washer in the video. Now at that same store, press your knee into the front of the cabin and watch it cave in. You can't do that with the washer in this video

The new machines today are terrible and I have no time to wait a hr for a few things to wash. I have a new one it's going to my daughter.I found me a used appliance store and brought me a older whirlpool 😊 they told me in that store that the older washers were their biggest seller.
Buying used is the only way to go these days. It’s a real shame Whirlpool no longer makes quality appliances.

Possibly, but here’s one thing about induction motors with a centrifugal start switch. If a motor with a centrifugal start switch sits too long on the start winding, it’ll dry the start winding rendering it useless since all it will do is hum and barely move.
I remember as a teen watching it clean. Same machine. Looks so familiar but all white. Color was more money. My Dad used to be able to fix them when they busted. I had a son 3 sons. All I which are hands on people. Just lost the youngest boy to suicide. 24 age. He could fix anything also.
White was the most commonly color for appliances since it was cheaper that paying for a different color or a all porcelain cabinet.

Whirlpool just used the name RCA for marketing since not many people where familiar with the name Whirlpool but were familiar with the RCA name. It certainly worked since Whirlpool made a name for themselves in the mid to late 1960’s.
Rattling in the last spin sounds like worn centerpost bearings. :-(
I’ll have to look into it sometime soon and thankfully I have a new set of bearings but unfortunately I have no way to install them at the moment since I don’t have a bearing installer :/
What was Whirlpool's main goal of moving to the direct drives besides cost? I heard they took 12 years of research and development.
@@jeromedavis8575 I would say overall that cost was the main factor. These were heavy machines that used lots of steel. The newer direct drives were more service friendly and the weight factor of the machines I'm sure figured in with shipping costs. Whirlpool took a gamble designing a whole different platform and it paid off for them.

The agitator looks like the gears or dogs may be stripped. Otherwise, a beautiful machine.
These machines don’t use agitator dogs since it’s a long stroke transmission. Shorter stroke transmissions need a dual action agitator since they don’t have all that more torque to move and generate currents of water compared to the longer stroke transmissions.

Absolutely! Never had to re-wash anything, I had to do a second rinse because of a suds lock a few times but never had to re-wash anything in all the machines I own.

@@Bnizzofashizzo you have to be care with how much detergent you use in these older Whirlpools since they have a tendency of suds locking very easily, even when HE detergent is used they will suds lock since the Whirlpool Surgilator kicks up a lot of suds. With Maytags, there won’t be a suds lock but will result in itchy clothes since they are sensitive to the amount of detergents used.

Why was the agitator slowing down and speeding up during spins while the tub stayed at the same speed? Seems really strange if that's an intentional design choice by Whirlpool
I am not sure why the agitator is doing that but I believe it could be dragging on the gear oil a little inside the transmission but that’s not a big deal.
@@seana806 The agitator shaft free-wheels when not engaged, picks up spin motion from friction with the bearings and seal at the top. Some instances there isn't enough friction to make it spin at full speed with the basket. It's a problem if the machine has an agitator-mounted, centrifugal softener dispenser, otherwise not a problem.

Certainly. People got to start demanding machines like this again and stop buying modern washers since all it does is enable them to keep on making junk and cons people out of machines they have had for many years, if not decades.

@@annettea6402 the whole reason why they have to lock the lid is there’s no tub break, with any of the older machines when open the lid, it’ll come to a stop or in this case, will disengage the solenoid for spin, will energize and re-engage.

Most machines today are sadly foreign made junk. Even if Speed Queen is know for quality, they too have gone down in quality since this have issues with the tub seals and bearings failing on them.

Seems to be more pronounced on the older Whirlpool built machines from 1964 and up. Reason why it was changed in 1965 was to help quiet them down a little.

I’ve had mine for 3 years, out of commission at the moment until I source a replacement or find some way to 3D print the cam assembly.
Capacity was way different from today's machine.
Believe this machine is rated for 8 to 9 pounds of laundry. Since I separate everything, not that much of deal.
That partial drain and pause predates that permanent press cool-down technique by about a decade.
Whirlpool actually developed the Wash N Wear/Permanent Press cycle in 1958 and developed the super wash cycle in 1963 and as mentioned 1963 was the very first year for the super wash cycle and all Whirlpool machines did the partial drain on the super wash cycle from 1963 to the mid to late 90’s.

The transmission in this machine only weighs about 30 to 35 pounds or so. This machine weighs the same as my Maytags, if it had the all porcelain cabinet, would be outrageously heavy.

The agitator freewheels in neutral and since this was rebuilt, it was still braking in till about October or so. Doesn’t do that anymore. The noise you are hearing is the upper bearing and another thing I’ll need to do is replace the bearings and I have new bearings for it along with a new spin tube but have no way to install the new bearings since I don’t have a bearing puller or installer.
Whirlpool should take notes on how a washer is supposed to work.
I thank all appliance manufacturers need to take notes of appliances they made many years ago.
This should not be as interesting as it is at 3am...

Not many other videos of these machines in 4K at 60 fps here on TH-cam with the exception of Lorain Furniture and even then, you can’t really here the solenoid engage on the videos he recorded in 2018 which explains why this is the second most viewed Whirlpool belt drive and the video of the 1959 Kenmore Eighty that Swestoyz uploaded back in 2013. I think if I record my full cycle videos like this one, it may end up going viral since this is the only 1963 RCA Whirlpool Imperial Mark XII on TH-cam at the moment not to mention it’s turquoise.
