I once heard that the contemporary music at Calvary Chapel in its early days was mostly sung at evening services or concerts and that the Sunday morning worship was pretty traditional. Anybody know if that is true?

@@davidstout6051 the Calvary Chapel I just went to was really low-key with the music just had two guys guitar and a bass and they sang the songs weren’t anything concerning and I even believe one of them was a really old song, but I do know this that all Calvary chapels are structured slightly in a different way I’m in the south the ones I’ve been exposed to recently seem small.

I got saved at Costa Mesa in 90 at Greg’s Monday night service. We’re reformed and amill but came back to Calvary chapel. We don’t adhere to their distinctives but love their outreach and zeal. I was OPC and it was too insular and divisive over non essentials

As one who was a sheep at Calvary Chapel Houston for over 17 years, I came to see a very dark side of Calvary, and the people who run it.
But more than likely, it's probably more linked to my involvement with Houston, the teachers that came there and who were led to be Calvary pastors from there who mostly became problematic after I became a Calvinist. When they found out I was not holding to their soteriology any longer but a proper, biblical one of Calvinism, it was like it became a battle.
Now David Gusik, I remember him only from his notes on Blue Letter Bible. I hope he is a Godly man who leads biblically and feeds his sheep to the best he can within the framework he holds to.

And why Reformed Baptist? What year is this? 1650?

Grew up in CC and even got married in CC. And now reformed. Sad to see what happened to Greg Laurie where he has gone. When I saw when he was a guest speaker at Gateway and praising Robert Morris as a great man of God I knew he left orthodoxy. There were signs before that, but I was hoping it wasn’t so. After my direct involvement being part of Calvary Chapel for over 17 years, and my dealings with several Calvary pastors i.e. at Calvary Chapel Houston including many pastors from other calvaries, and coming to understand their poor leadership, which is indicative of their poor ecclesiology, and their childish stance against calvinism, not to mention their unbiblical soteriology and eschatology, it would be very difficult to have a discussion with a calvaryite which would end well because none of them have ended well.
There might be some really good Calvary Chapel churches which are led by good Godly men, but they all still have to hold strictly to the Calvary Chapel Distinctions right? Yes, there is a book of Calvary Distinctives which every pastor must adhere to in order to be part of calvary's denomination....and yes, Calvary is a denomination even though they fight tooth and nail claiming they are not.....they are, for the Distinctives prove they are.

  • @Llamaman1492

Keith, as far as Pauline authorship of Hebrews goes I think there is a valid explanation of that phrase in chapter 2. Paul wasn’t shy about saying that he received traditions from the church and other apostles. 1 Corinth 15 “For I delivered as of first importance that which I received”
Besides, it always circulated with the other letters of Paul and it was always quoted as being from Paul. Even by Origen who famously said “God only knows who wrote it (as in who the scribe was)” and then goes on to quote Hebrews “As Saint Paul says..”
If you accept the historical arguments for Matthew being first, you should reconsider the arguments for Pauline authorship of Hebrews! :)

Keith you touched on something that I have been thinking about alot and that pastor David also addressed and that is im not convinced we are preparing people for the pastoral office in a biblical way. Im not convinced that you can really have pastors that aren't elders and i would much rather see local church's raising up the men of their church's through the ranks to eventually become elders and fill the roles of pastors.

I, like many other commenters here, also go to a Calvary Chapel but lean reformed (I would consider myself a 5-point Calvinist and a “classic-and-nuanced” cessasionist, but I am also a premillennial dispensationalist w/o charts 😂).
Overall, they preach the true gospel at my particular Calvary Chapel. My pastor, quotes Spurgeon and John MacArthur constantly and has taught things that seem borderline Calvinist, but I’m pretty sure he is not.
Generally speaking, I cannot stand the music portion of our church services. The focus always seems more on musicianship and sound quality than on teaching sound doctrine through song. They choose mostly Bethel and Bethel-type contemporary songs and the decibels are around 90 or above. It definitely feels like a concert and I can’t hear anyone singing next to me. We will occasionally do hymns, but they are often adapted.
My husband was raised Assemblies of God Pentecostal and this is as tame and Bible-focused as I can get, so I am very grateful. Previously, we had been going to some crazy charismatic churches, so I asked for years and years for this compromise. I would say it is not acceptable in our church for people to speak in “tongues“ out loud so others can hear during our services, nor “prophesy.”
In conclusion, though I would rather go to some of the Calvinistic Baptist churches with hymnals in my area, I am prepared to be satisfied with my Calvary Chapel because they are not outright Arminian, they teach verse by verse through the Bible, and I never see people “operating in the gifts of the spirit” during service. However, the music with dim lights and loud volume does seem rather emotionally manipulated, and though there aren’t a lot of people with hands raised, they still seem very emotionally hyped up during that portion of the service.
Thank you for this video. I needed to see it and it gave me more peace about going to a CC in spite of my theological differences.

In my experience Calvary Chapel is considered charismatic but really is more of a practical cessationism. It's more of an if God wanted to use someone to lay hands on someone and heal them it could happen, but it doesn't really happen. I've never seen sign gifts like tongues, healing, prophesying done other than some individuals who came from a Pentecostal background, and that's been outside of the church gathering.

Keith, with the utmost respect your interpretation on 1 Cor 11 and head coverings was shockingly lacking in proper hermeneutics. Do you think that in the last century our theologians have suddenly got greater insight than 2000 years of church history and theologians who all taught women’s head covering? Suddenly the 21st century theologians are smarter than all who went before? You don’t think it might have something to do with the feminism movement and women burning their head coverings in the 1960’s as a sign of defiance against male headship? If you are going to interpret the passage of head covering being cultural then you need to apply the same interpretation to male headship being cultural. God bless.

    • @bethechurchministry

I have been searching this too and it seems this is a very modern teaching. Mainly sense feminism movement in the west. Seems all throughout history and culture women covers their head and still do in many cultures.
What’s hard is now our culture does not wear them and if I were to suddenly show up to church covered it could be perceived like I am trying to look more righteous than others or draw attention to myself.
I have been wrestling with this for a couple months.

    • @emilyolson5624

@@bethechurchministry I never covered, and was raised to believe it was cultural. I spent about 3 years sorting through this, including Mike Winger's video, because despite 41 years of being told it wasn't needed, I could not shake the feeling that I needed to. Needless to say, I now cover full time, and I am the only person in my church, or town of 25,000 that I know of that does. Yes, it made my friends circle start talking and raised some questions! I didn't go crazy...I just wear triangle headbands over my ponytail or very wide headbands. When asked, I keep it simple: I cover because after 3 years of study, I feel like the Lord tells Christian women to do so in 1 Corinthians. If your interested in learning more, I'll be happy to talk to you and if not, that's OK too!" That generally shuts down anyone who wants to debate or be argumentative, but also makes it clear that I am just trying to be obedient to the best of my ability, and not seem to self righteous.

@@bethechurchministry I am the only one at my church that covers. If anyone thinks I am self righteous then that is their own problem or their own personal guilt. I do often find it hard to cover being the only one. It grieves me that my Christian sisters (and brothers!) completely ignore this section of scripture. There are often tears on a Sunday morning before church. However I remind myself that my fear of God is greater than my fear of man and if there is suffering involved then that is my honour.

I love David Guzik and have used his commentary a lot in the past. I enjoyed this interview a lot. Just for clarity, that quote if Spurgeon about being either arminian or calvinist was in response to the hyper calvinists who were accusing him of being arminian. He wasn't actually saying that he didn't really know or that there was some sort of middle position. It was sort of a sarcastic rhetorical response to the hyper calvinists accusing him of being an arminian because he believed in the free offer of the gospel. That's what he was referring to. That quote is brought up all the time to say that Spurgeon was somewhere more in the middle and it's just not correct.

    • @DavidGuzik
      @DavidGuzik 3 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

Hi Chris, just a quick comment to say that I agree - Spurgeon was a definite Calvinist through his entire ministry, and not in some "middle ground." I think his comment, as well as being a jab at the hyper Calvinists of his day, was also his way of indicating that he didn't think Arminianism was a damnable heresy, though of course he thought it was wrong and not what the Bible taught.

    • @chrisjohnson9542

@@DavidGuzikhey brother David! I'm so glad to see you in the comments and even took the time to read my comment! I really love your work and your heart brother. I totally agree with your assessment of what you just said. I hope my comment didn't come across as uncheritable. I always know there's the chance that the person could see my comment so I try to write with that in mind but sometimes tone doesn't convey well in text. I can attribute my early Christian walk and growth in large part to Calvary Chapel camarillo and ventura (if you know since riverside is not too far) and one of the pastors would make the comment about Spurgeon and arminianism and I learned later the bigger context to the quote and thought it would be informative.
This is already long but in case you read this I want you to know how much your commentary helped me in putting together my very first Bible study going through the gospel of Mark a few years ago. It really helped me so much and even though I'm reformed I found it more practical and insightful than a lot of other stuff. I used to think of Mark as a lesser gospel that it didn't have anything that Matthew didn't have. But through that bible study I learned to treasure Mark and His message of the Messiah come to die for sinners.
God bless you brother David and thank you!

I went to CC while in bible college & was baptized by my pastor at the time…he was having affairs with married women in the church. This is no reflection on CC but I stopped attending after that. My current issue is their fervent Zionism & obsession with dispensational (read: incorrect) eschatology. I do like the verse by verse expository teaching & will listen to the local radio station from time to time but invariably they always find a way to make it about supporting Talmudists who hate our Lord.

Calvary Chapel is awesome in it's preaching style and doctrinal fidelity. The music is great as well.
However, one valid condemnation of CC is that it's casual church style most likely led to the dressed down, skinny jeans pragmatism that has been a metastatic cancer in evangelical circles.
Putting on your Sunday best and taking a traditional approach to church shows respect to God.
Long term outcomes of casual church has produced a very low quality version of Christianity.

I find the QC lacking with Calvary Chapel. Come have solid theologians as Pastors and others are lacking in knowledge. A little too loosy goosy with who gets the Pastor title.

I did not like The Jesus Revolution movie. Lonnie Frisbee's ongoing homosexuality was covered over and to me there was no clear gospel message given in the film. I did appreciate that the foot-washing as a necessary thing to do and not taken out of the Bible and misapplied as a ceremony. I also did not like the secular 70's? rock music used in a Christian film. There are much better things to be edified by on TH-cam. I thought that Calvary Chapel ( at least Chuck Smith) was quite opposed to calvinism.

I agree! Lonnie was not a man of God to be praised. Also a lot of bad theology and movements were birthed out of that movement.
Yes good came too but we need to be careful propping up the movement and sugar coating all the bad theology, rock n roll music ect ….

Agreed. Frisbee is closer to a cautionary tale than a role model to be emulated.
As yes, especially evident in the Jack Hibbs portion of CC, they are strongly Dispy and anti-Calvinist. My pastor does as well, acknowledging being a good friend of Hibbs

Guzik allowing that the Church is separate from Israel puts him in the minority of CC pastors inasmuch as all I have ever seen closely tie our salvation with the unqualified support of the nation of Israel; going so far as to say that if you don't support the nation of Israel you are in error and deceived by Satan.
    (That's quite the single sentence 🤨 😄)

The Puritan tradition has very high correlation with the Reformed faith so you are anti your professed faith. And Johnathon Edwards was perhaps the greatest Theologian this continent has ever seen 😬

I wholeheartedly agree that Hebrews was not written by Paul. Apollos is my usual candidate, though Luke is an interesting possibility. Ultimately of course it’s an unknown. Very enjoyable video.

Notice the doxology and final sentence of almost all Pauline writings. How interesting that Hebrews has the doxology and final sentence nearly identical to the others.
