This was the first public performance of Celtic Frost, recorded shortly before their concert debut at Grabenhalle St. Gallen. Seeing this now brings back so many memories: almost everybody from the old metal scene is in the audience. You can see me headbanging so hard my head almost falls off during CF, right before the stage. RIP Martin.

Greetings from germany. Celtic Frost starting off with "Into the Crypts of Rays" - a brutal smasher back then and still nowadays that we have 2023. The crew in this studio must have gone mad. The guys banging like hell in front of the stage - so good to see it like it really was everywhere during those days. I have to think back a long time when here in germany this band was god-like and we all totally freaked out when one of their songs was played in our local metal club in a little town called "Knesebeck". Banged like maniacs in this club we call "Salvo". This was the time when one record legend after the other hit the market. Celtic Frost were among them. Then there was KROKUS. I loved them back then. Had all their records. But this was in the very early 1980s - up to "Headhunter". Then i went directly into the super hard speed and thrash metal stuff. Afterwards DESTRUCTION with "Bestial Invasion" entered the stage: it was at a party in autumn 1985 when i first heard their music while their "Infernal Overkill" album was played endlessly there. Directly went to the record store next monday and bought it. Freaked out afterwards in my little room. They also had the "Hellish Crossfire" album from Iron Angel at this party. Another masterpiece which drove me mad. But this is another story.....

You can definitely see where the handwriting was on the wall for traditional heavy metal in this video: Black Angels, Krokus, and Blood Six were doing fine for early '80s metal, but they're definitely playing in styles of metal that would be woefully out of fashion by the end of the decade, and Venom, Destruction and Celtic Frost sounding quite a bit fresher, more modern, and more innovative even almost 40 years later - Celtic Frost and Destruction in particular look and sound almost a decade ahead of their time here. Meanwhile, poor Thor comes across like an absolute dinosaur by comparison! I wonder if Krokus and the rest of the guys playing more traditional rock and metal in this show realized that Destruction and Celtic Frost were changing the metal game forever, right before their very eyes?

I think it would definitely have been interesting to hear what those smaller bands thought of Destruction, Celtic Frost, and Venom after this was recorded, there's definitely a difference there, with 1985 marking a line between metal's past, and its future, with this video being an almost perfect monument to what happened: Venom, Destruction and Celtic Frost pretty much ate everyone else's lunch here, and definitely sound more energetic, more modern, more innovative, and more aggressive.
A look back over the "cheese" bands here - Canada's Thor, and Switzerland's Krokus, Black Angels, and Bloody Six - shows that only Krokus lasted very long after this recording was made, and even then survived only on life-support provided by a niche hard-rock fan base which seems to have accepted that Krokus' better days were already behind them when this video was made... Bloody Six only released one album (the year before this recording was made), and Thor and Black Angels would disband more or less as soon as this video was recorded, reappearing only after a couple decades hiatus after the extreme metal thing largely played itself out and a sort of nostalgia for '80s cheese kicked back in.
That is, 1985 seems to have been a bad year for all the bands that weren't already well-established, or weren't on board with Venom's game-changing extreme metal (Celtic Frost and Destruction were pretty clearly rising up out of the shadows of what Venom had already been doing for a few years, and were by 1985 just distinguishing themselves from the band that inspired them by taking things a step or two further than Venom!)

      The lineup here was:
      1-Black Angels 03:06
      2-Celtic Frost 09:47
      3-Krokus 13:51
      4-Destruction 19:12
      5-Thor 23:55
      6-Bloody Six 29:52
      7-Venom 33:54
I'm familiar with most of them at least by reputation and would have recognized Venom, Celtic Frost, Destruction, and Thor immediately. I remember Krokus being a deal for a very short time in the mid '80s but I don't think they survived the thrash era for very long. Blood Six and Black Angels are completely new ones on me.
You can definitely tell that Celtic Frost and Destruction represented a revolution in metal that year: Blood Six, Black Angels, Krokus, and especially poor Thor looked and sounded like dinosaurs by comparison, with Destruction and Celtic Frost sounding and looking like they are many years ahead of their time, and still feel fresh and modern! (Venom, of course, had already been pioneering much of what Celtic Frost and Destruction were doing here in previous years, and Venom, too, sounds relatively modern compared to Black Angels and Thor....)
I can't help thinking that Krokus and Blood Six, at the very least, must have realized that they were about to be replaced by a new generation of metal at this point, if they couldn't keep up: they both struck me as bands that might have been fairly successful if traditional heavy metal and NWOBHM weren't about to get left behind by the younger thrash, death, and black metal acts. I'm halfway interested now in in checking out what Krokus and Blood Six did after 1985 to see if they tried to update their sound to something a little thrashier, and whether or not it worked out for them at all - certainly, they don't seem to have caught on in any event, but it would be interesting to me to see if they at least tried, and how well it worked out!
EDIT: based on what I saw at a glance in Encyclopaedia Metallum, Krokus nearly self-destructed after 1985, and barely held together playing derivative hard rock in the year afterward, while Bloody Six vanished after releasing one album in 1984, apparently never to be seen or heard from again after this TV appearance. Thor (CA) apparently disbanded from 1986 to the 1990s, and Black Angels vanished from 1985 until 2009: looks like 1985 was not a good year for most of these bands, with Venom, Celtic Frost, and Destruction managing to be the three bands with any real staying power over the years (with Celtic Frost's 1988 'Cold Lake' fiasco of course marking a major setback for that band, which still managed to remain legendary for the albums that came before that, and for their reunion album later on....)
As an aside, looks like most of these bands are Swiss, except for Canadian Thor, Germans Destruction, and of course the British Venom: I didn't realize Krokus were Swiss!

Poor Thor - he's remembered today as something of an internet meme for "worst metal videos ever" - check them out if you're unfamiliar with them! He must have seemed a bit dated and cheesy even in the early '80s when he would surely have been more at home competing with Dio, Manowar, and other fantasy-themed heavy metal bands from the turn of the decade, but when performing side-by-side with younger, leaner, faster, dirtier, grimier thrash-era bands like Venom, Celtic Frost, and Destruction, he looked totally out of place and decades past his time!
I couldn't help noticing that 1985, when this show was recorded, was sort of a turning point for metal, with that in mind, and decided to check up on the bands that I wasn't as familiar with, and my suspicions were confirmed: Thor vanished for a couple decades after 1986, Black Angels disappeared for a couple decades after 1985, Bloody Six only released their 1984 album before vanishing, and Krokus seems to have haunted the metal world with a handful of mediocre hard rock albums produced while barely holding together as a band from 1986 through the dark '90s until today, apparently largely carried on by a loyal niche fanbase that had accepted that Krokus' best years were behind them by the time this video was recorded.
1985 was not at all kind to any traditional metal/NWOBHM bands that weren't already famous, and weren't able to find their way onto the post-Venom/Motorhead thrash/extreme metal train! Celtic Frost and Destruction were about to change the metal genre forever, and they sounded ahead of their time here, while the more backward bands were left in their dust after this video was made.

@@pietrayday9915 Hahaha come on, man, you can't really say Thor competed with Dio with a straight face, can you? Not in '85, not in '81, not in '24, not ever.
As for the rest of your post, I mean, yeah, I guess. NWOBHM is revered, though. It didn't outlast thrash as a genre, sure... but it kind of was "subsumed" by those bands and rectified into extreme metal post-crossover and into the 90s. Krokus, good example, actually carried a following as you mention and are rather revered today in certain circles. Thor is not because, frankly, it was cheesy derivative performance metal that paled in comparison. You have to rise far to fall hard.
