I'm puzzled by your inability to think of other stories that focus more on the settings. Lots of stories do. Especially video games which mostly have silent protaganists that are plopped into a world without much explanation. The setting is all the game has. Silent Hill is a perfect example. Pretty much any haunted house movie. Lots of movies about virtual realities (Matrix, Tron). I would say even the original Halo was more about the setting. That was a heavy focus of the advertising. What the hell is this mysterious ringworld? That was the focus. A lot of historical dramas are focused on the setting. Jurassic Park has much less focus on characters and a lot more on how the park was built and why it is failing, specifically written/filmed as an example of how Chaos Theory works. Bioshock again is about the downfall of a great city. There is a great character element to it as well but I'd have to say the setting takes centre stage. Many Bethesda games are more about the world and lore. I can't even give a shit about the characters in most of their games and I don't think the writers do either lol. Just a few examples off the top of my head. Otherwise, good video as always dude!
Well I was certainly having a hard time thinking about it on the spot, either way that bit was to show just how rare those types of stories are. "Mostly unheard of" is how I put it :P
"Six! That AI chose you. She made the right choice." I remember hearing that line for the first time, and it gave me chills. It pays homage to the relationship between Cortana and Chief. For example, at the beginning of Halo 3, Cortana made a reference about how she could've chosen any Spartan she wanted, but she chose John because he was the luckiest of them all; he's also the bravest and the best of the Spartans as well. Cortana made that same decision with Noble Six. He was simply the best of Noble Team. And as a player, you feel emboldened because the game puts you in the shoes of Six. You ARE Noble Six, the Spartan who passed the mantle of responsibility.
Holy sheet that comment makes me cry. Halo it's nothing about only the chief, but all the hummanity that help him to make his story much esier it could be. Halo means much more than that. That's why Halo Reach is my second favourite after Halo 2.
It’s crazy how much easier they Covenant would’ve been defeated if Six was able to get on the Pillar before that supercarrier caused him to stay. Him and Chief were the best Spartans to exist and only overwhelming odds stopped Six and Master Chief is still around. Too bad for 312
If six instead of jun was the one to get on Pillar the damn spartan IV project would have been unnecessary. 2 legendary badasses (and the arbiter I guess) would have been conflict over, war won, gg. Just remember: That pussy Jun retired (yeah whatever he supposedly was too depressed over the loss of his entire squad, but Chief lost way more comrades that he GREW UP WITH *cough* Spartan II program in a nutshell *cough* ) Six could have been just as good as Chief, I mean the dude was a solo headhunter in all likelihood before being shipped to Reach.
I absolutely love that Noble 6 wears the custom armor you decide on in every cutscene and actually has the weapon that you were holding when the cutscene activates!
"He gave his life thinking he just saved the planet, we should all be so lucky." That whole segment was gut wrenching. As soon as he died and you think things are looking up, a whole covenant fleet showed up. Sometimes you just don't win.
I actually slunk down in my chair like "Fuuuck... Really?" when playing through it for the first time yesterday, then Kat's death hit soon after like "Fuck, it's all falling apart, no, no no..."
@@GreenDinoRanger After Jorge was Kat, I was surprised she went next, but it didn't feel forced, as sometimes the enemy just gets the jump on you. Carter I gave a nod of respect to, after seeing the plasma injury at the beginning. Emile I grinned but also went "damnit, dude.."
@@F1fan4eva Carter says that on the mission where you fly around New Alexandria when you just arrive after being picked up by the pelicans to regroup with Noble team, he's talking about Jorge thinking he saved Reach by blowing up the one cruiser, not knowing after he died, a whole armada showed up.
Halo: Reach had a real military feeling, you aren't saving the galaxy, you're a normal soldier just following orders and I think that military feeling fits all of halo perfectly.
It did feel gritty and raw a halo reach elite on legendary is basically and another player, they shoot on the move, rush u when ur shields r down, they know some lethal ass karate, use armor abilities, dodge ur gernades, throw gernades when you are in venerable positions, but the reward for killing them is the other enemies fight less effectivly
I couldn't agree more with the whole "not every soldier gets remembered for their sacrifices, but war shouldn't be glorified either" theme of Halo: Reach. Take Jorge's death. Jorge made a heroic sacrifice. He took out the Covenant command ship. He did everything that was necessary, in the situation at hand, to defend his home. He achieved his objective successfully. And yet, immediately after he died, his sacrifice was nullified.
Yeah I love Reach for what the story is. The whole team is so bad ass and you get to experience all their roles in the missions and get to know them and how invincible Spartans seem to be. Yet it also shows how brutal and down to eart Halo's world can be even though Noble Team seems like it could mop every floor. It also makes Master Chief seem even stronger for those who like him, he's truly special after seeing how Noble Team fell, they did everything near perfectly, yet the force of the world outshadows even the best Spartans.
My favorite part about Reach is that instead of playing in a post-apocalyptic wasteland (cause that's really cliche nowadays), you get to play through the entire apocalypse start to finish, each level showing the planet falling into more and more chaos. It's genius.
facts bro. the start mission when ur running alongside those emu things to encountering the covenant shortly after to then progressing into more and more hectic scenarios and watching the planet going to ruin in the background sceneries of the missions. reach is probably my most least played halo campaign behind 4 and 5 but its always stuck out to me as unique and beautiful storytelling
I'll admit, when Kat got shot through the head I actually short circuited for a minute. It was so sudden and unexpected that there was no way to subconsciously prepare for it. And that is how you know it was so well done. Because in war, a lot of the time death is just around the corner and completely unexpected. One moment you could be thinking about your loved ones back home and the next you could be showered in the brain matter of your comrade who'd just been shot by an enemy sniper. I really think Reach added a tangible sense of reality to the true nature of war.
Michael Dude this was the first halo game I’ve ever played as a kid and to this day, I still have the disk but it’s badly scratched I tried some methods to clean it but it’s too late. I’m glad I get to play as emile or kat in gears 5. I would sell bo4 for reach but sadly no refunds, I’ll make sure to buy it again in the future
Insidious Marine Well Halo Reach is coming soon to PC and Xbox One at 60fps in 1080p or 4K in the Master Chief Collection with a new overhauled progression system. The multiplayer is free and the campaign can be purchased as a DLC for like $5 to 10$. Halo 3 ODST was $5 as well.
I love the realistic, grounded feel. In the sense that this feels like a war. It gives a sense for how bad the war with the Covenant was going, that despite all the heroics, sacrifices and effort we all put in, we're still losing. It made the universe more real to me
Most agreeable comment award. It’s very easy to lose sight of that when playing in the Chief games. Not so much for real Halo fans who have played them all for years, but it’s forces everyone, especially those not very familiar with the franchise (outside of Chief) to understand the gravity of how fucked humanity was the whole time. And whine Spartans and especially Chief are insane. There’s only so many of them to be thrown at the covenant.
Emile loves killing the covenant because they killed his brother (who sacrificed himself for Emile) and they glassed his home planet (not Reach). His goal is to see their downfall and avenge his brother more than anything else. The closest we get to a story about noble team was the live action trailer where the original Noble six died and Kat lost her arm Also, imagine Noble Six made it onto the autumn. 1 UNSC ship. 1 Halo ring. One covenant fleet. 2 hyper lethal Spartans.
That wasn't six actually that was the first six the noble six you see in campaign is the 2nd noble six in the trailer she loses her arm but in the campaign she then has the robot arm, the campaign took after the events if the trailer
Spot on. As a veteran, film and writing enthusiast and Halo fan, the way these Spartans interact and communicate with each other is brilliant. Those that received a different impression are maybe too young, or do not possess enough depth. The dialogue was very mature, adult and authentic. Totally real soldier talk.
The best moment for me was when I saw the name of the last mission, Lone Wolf. Then I remembered when Carter told Six to leave the 'Lone Wolf' stuff behind when joining the team. So perfect.
I remember mine somewhat vividly. Female, HP/ Parafoil (r) to to simulateKat's prosthetic arm, Mk. V pads and the CQB UA/HUL helmet. Had to go and look up the names xD I Honestly miss Reach, in my eyes it had the best Halo multiplayer, story and definitely the best halo customisation.
I kinda envy noble team. They had a reason to live, and a reason to die. They each died believing they did the best they could. I envy them having such a fulfilling sense of purpose.
If theres one thing I hope to do in my life, its pursue something with the dedication and focus that both Noble Team, and Bungie had for what they were doing.
I never really saw the events of Reach as the beginning. I always saw it as the beginning of the end. CE starts off as the Autumn running from Reach; Buck compared the glassing of New Mombasa to Reach; Lord Hood compares Regret’s fleet to Thel’s at Reach. The events of Reach always feel like the seminal event that sealed humanity’s fate.
Ya reach isn't the beginning. The beginning would be harvest with sgt. johnson. This is what sets into motion the master chief to save humanity and find the rings.
thats a really good point about how every one always points back to reach. it was the beginning og the end for humanity. we just pulled one out of our asses honestly
When I first played Halo reach I was expecting it to be a generic war story where they win and they all go home heros and are happy but then they started to die and that caught me really off guard.
@@eazyelof4283 plus it has been mention before. Beginning of CE and beginning of halo 3 i believe. There was also that booklet in halo 3 case that mentions reach.
Even though it was so sudden and quick, Kat’s death was the most brutal imo. You’re alive one moment and then, nothing. You’re gone, a memory. There’s no climax or build up to your death. It just happened and dying like that without a proper end to my story is scary.
the piano tune the plays when Emille is carrying Kat's body after the glassing is heartbreaking, it shows that Noble team is getting picked off one by one and theres a sense of hopelessness.
Honestly that was the one death that really annoyed me because she had her helmet on and shields up, but somehow after all the fighting THAT one jackal shot was enough to kill her instantly?? It's always bothered me. If they had made an excuse for her to not have her helmet, i could understand it, like it got damaged or she had to see something technical she was working on and took her helmet off to get a better look... but just instagibbed whilst fully armoured never sat right with me. They could have done it way better.
Jun: "You know this stuff is stolen right?" Insurgent: "What, you gonna arrest me?" Jun: "No, Im gonna steal it back." Hands down one of his better lines in the whole game :')
I think Halo Reach and Rogue one have a lot in common with each other. They have similar themes of the night being darkest just before the dawn. We see the lowest point of the Rebellion and UNSC, and the need for hope in their respective universes. Where Rogue One sets the stage for Luke Skywalker to save the galaxy, Reach sets it up for the Master Chief.
TotallyRealistic it wasn't retconned completely. I'll have to find it but they actually fit Reaches story with the book Fall of Reach. It's not perfect but it does work. Personally I Follow the books and I just think of Reach as a game and just a game. Btw idk how anyone else felt when they first read Fall of Reach but it's what got me hooked on Halo and I was 13 or so and I been a fan and reading the books ever since. I wish they would have left the Forerunners more mysterious and I wish they never appeared in the games. I also love the Black ops of ONI in the books. I wish we had a game that was about the insurrection while playing as a Helljumper squad. Kinda like Halo Odst but I wanna feel more human. I felt like you could play like a Spartan still in that game. I shouldn't be able to melee a Brute as just a normal guy. A game based around more tactics and strategy rather than run and gun. Being able to call in air strikes, having squads where every member had a specific duty (heavy weapons, sniper, medic etc.) And always feeling like you are hopelessly outmatched when coming across a group of brutes or elites. Until the SAW came in Halo 4 I never understood why the UNSC never had a light machine gun. So in this dream game of mine the soldiers would have one for the heavy weapons soldier. Sorry for rambling, kinda stoned and just talking bout halo and the what ifs.
Difference being I actually like Reach. Both have amazing visuals, great music, and cool action, but I think Reach has better characters and it has amazing gameplay to fall back on. Rogue one doesn’t have that
I never seem to get chills in my favorite game's cutscenes. But when noble 6 says "negative, I have the gun" refusing to leave and ensuring that the Pillar of Autumn can get away safely, I just can't help myself. I dunno about you but I looked at Noble six as myself, I was him, I wasn't simply playing as him I kinda forgot that other people had the same character. For the first time in a Halo game I felt like I was there, everything was on my shoulders and I had a duty. I felt like I was going to die with six when he made that choice, and when he died I felt like I lost a part of myself along with him. Sorry, I hate being feely but I dunno how else to get my point across for this game.
Griffin Long this is why I felt so bad when emile and george died, I loved those guys so much and they're just dead, I feel like I was actually there and could have done something but I couldn't
Griffin Long That's what Bungie's games try to do. They try to immerse you in the character's shoes. With Chief, there was a bit of immersion, but in Reach, you customize Noble 6 to change what his armour looks like, to what YOU like. He pretty much never talks so that you can respond to the characters in your mind as if you were Noble 6. That's why Reach is great, because your spartan is shaped to seem like YOU were caught in this conflict as hyper lethal spartan. It makes you feel just as special as Chief.
The thing I loved most about Reach was the raw grit you felt with everything. The weapons felt worn down, your surroundings felts washed out and dying, and the combat feels sharp in the best way possible. This will always be my favorite Halo game of all time
Reach Character In Summary Carter : The by the book captain Kat: The big brain Jun : The sarcastic archer Emile : The psycopath Jeorge : The Iron Giant Noble 6 : The lone wolf i rewatch this vid to get excited for Halo Reach in MCC
Same I bought it cause halo 3 ran out at my gamestop. This is the one I replayed the most and damn went through the campaign multiple times. I enjoyed seeing an alien invasion unfold from start to finish
well, Spartans are supposed to be lethal supersoldiers with augmentations that make them superhuman, and a way bigger threat to the sangheili or the jiralhanae than regular UNSC marines
d4unit True, but that doesn’t mean that they are immortal due to ridiculous plot armor. Which is why I am appreciative of Reach despite hoping that more of them could’ve survived, it seems more realistic. Especially considering how the more recent games portray Spartans.
The way Reach is told, the emotion and the setting is amazing. Never has a game made me feel the level of hope, the loss of hope and sadness that is involved in the story. Its a masterpiece.
Chris Topher you'd be the first one whining about too many cutscenes in the opposite case! I agree with the video, less is more. A squad wouldn't be providing exposition to the new guy, they'd just be acting like they always had before you got there.
Dude, what bothers me is that the deaths all feel either forced or down right bullshit. Jorge's actually had weight because he felt like he was gonna save the day and then we find more covenant. Kat died like a bitch though, 1 shot to the back of the head by a needle rifle, not a sniper rifle, but a needle rifle. Emile went out swinging at least, but I didn't feel anything from the guy since you see so little of him in the game. And Carted fucking kamikaze's himself into the scarab which feels pointless since you can defeat those things on your own anyways without killing yourself. It was just dumb.
theallaroundnerd agreed on all points. Jorge's death actually had me confused for a solid minute ("wait....didnt we just win? Awww shit") The rest felt corny and too "matched" for the character
I actually think reach has the best campaign in the entire series. I played it for the first time yesterday and I was blown away by it. When each marine, and each Spartans dies I felt something, played it on legendary and took me 11 hours to complete
Locke could have been a good character if they didn't try to shoehorn him into Master Chief's story. There's a lot of interesting stories that could or still can be told with him and his background, it just blows my mind that they stuck him where they did. Complete waste of a character.
Dunkirk. Dunkirk is a setting based story. It may be more so about the battle, but in the end, the film by Christopher Nolan is more so the events that took place in Dunkirk, and the movie for SURE doesnt pay much attention to its characters, as there really arent any named characters. Dunkirk is a setting based story, BAM
I always saw his voice as an option for the firefight announcer and was so confused. Thought it was an easter egg from some other random franchise till H4 came out
@@underground5682 lol someone doesn't have many friends. Imagine finding a random internet conversation and interjecting yourself for the sole purpose of being rude
I had no clue what the halo series was or about so when I went over to my cousins house for her birthday and she had a Xbox 360 I saw some other people on the couch playing and eventually I got my turn. Shit was amazing, the game felt so good. I ended up begging my cousin to give me the game and happily walked out the door with it in hand.
also, if i remember correctly the UNSC or the Spartan program logo has an eagle clutching an olive branch in one claw and a couple of arrows in another claw.
I started getting emotional when the nobles are starting to die until I'm the only one left, and that last mission is really good, makes you feel like you're in a movie, Halo : Reach is my first Halo game, I'm not one of those people who played Halo in their childhood and I'm glad I played it
It is, but I’d say there’s a difference in that Dunkirk is based off real war. It’s a very easy story to pick up, because there’s nothing a director needs to add to make it more about what it is. Dunkirk was about Dunkirk, and the people in it were all so important, yet unimportant. Again, Dunkirk is definitely setting driven, but I feel like the comparison is too easy! :)
I liked the dark realistic look. Not the plastic shit of halo 5. I like how the character all died instead of ALWAYS winning. If you look at the halo MIA roster for spartan II and IIIs all of them are dead save a couple. This shows the sacrifice spartans made to save humanity.
I've always said Halo Reach looks the most realistic. Hated how Halo 4 and Halo 5 looked cartoony and fake. From the second I saw the first Halo 4 promo my heart sank. No idea why they didn't keep with the reach/ Halo 3 textures but oh well.
@@filfa8420 cod is in present day or past wars we have seen what happens when they make it in the future I liked the customization between the Spartans and the dirt and grime
Halo 5 characters and such all look cartoony on purpose. They're SUPPOSED to stand out from the environment because halo esports are taken more seriously now by 343i
I've always thought of reach as the story of Noble 6's death, but dying with the planet, Noble 6 goes from standard soldier, to secret pilot, to chosen one, to fallen hero, Noble 6's destiny was reach
man wasn't a standard soldier though his story before reach is mostly covered in black ink by ONI but it's known that he made entire militia groups dissappear completely his previous commander named him his personal angel of death and he was tagged as hyper-lethal, and there is only ONE other spartan with that same tag and that's chief so he was by no means a standard soldier😂 but i feel you bro his destiny was to die with reach
Always felt like Reach was like playing through one of those History Channel documentaries about specific battles that follow a specific squad except in the future and you're a part of it. very strange almost dream like. Edit: Also one of my favorite touches of the scene where your character says "Sorry I came alone" is it's after 2 of the longest missions in the game and being separated from the rest of the squad. It takes so long before you or Nobel 6 can even really process the death of George.
The one thing you didn’t mention for Emile is that he was born on the same planet as the master chief. I think this adds to his character because arguably only the chief is more of a badass. That planet just breeds the perfect alien killers
R S I was so surprised he completely glossed over it... like it’s an FPS, it was a light-Xbox exclusive for a while and is easily one of the most famous games of all time.
When I first played Reach 10 years ago it never connected with me, I played it on a difficulty too easy and just ran through it. Now 10 years later I played it on legendary and felt it suited the game much better. The struggle and sense your fighting in a losing battle really hit home.
I can’t even count how many times me and my brother played through that mission with 2 hunters in a large room and died constantly. Loved that game on legendary, it really gives it justice
Something I've noticed with Reach after playing it over and over is that almost every single frame of the cutscenes and gameplay seem to be filmed from a camera. It helps to think of Reach like a TV show.
The Legendary Edition of Reach comes with a note that calls the game an "interactive documentary", Halsey's journal was declassified from the ONI and the statue was a memorial replica. It's really neat from an in universe perspective.
Noble team is like that person you had an interaction with and could tell they’re really cool, but never got their number and think about from time to time. Bungie said “heres noble team, you’re gonna adore them, and you’re never going to see them again.” such is life
18:29 That's a really good observation about how each member of Noble Team had an ironic death. Never noticed that before. Reach's campaign was really good but for me CE will always be #1 as it was the original and most iconic by far.
Tomn8er Being ironic doesn't mean they're good characters. That means the writers didn't write them beyond their cliche's. I mean even their deaths are cliche and predictable.
i remember thinking carter was a cliche character, but there was something about him that made it ok. throughout the story you will see that he obeys his leadership, but isn't a drone. it's hard to explain unless you just play the game
Kat had a rlly subtle moment in the elevator before her exit where she slams the elevator button twice implying her nervousness in the situation it's moments like that that humanized the team and grounded them as soldiers a part of a battle way bigger than them
Aye mate Reach is a great game and I got something for ya. Carter and Kat arent in love, but are actually close due to them being the only ones that survived everything. What I mean by that was there were previous Noble 6's and previous Noble 3's, 4's, and 5's, and those two were the only ones that lived through all their deaths and watched all their previous teammates fall in battle. Thats why they are so close, because they've seen some shit and are the only two who truly know about it.
i don't think he mentioned anything about romance, he just hinted at a strong relationship which can make many things but I think you're right about those two
Actually, interestingly enough, the developer commentary for Reach implies there WAS some kind of relationship between them. They mention it during the cutscene after Kat's death, when Six jumps over the hill to help the ODSTs (I think they were ODSTs, I can't remember). But yes, they otherwise did have a close relationship due to being the only surviving members of the original team.
Reach was the best. I felt more attached to the story than I had in any other halo game. Halo 2 was definitely more fun, but the actual story of reach was just.... perfect.
JPGII96 halo 3 isn’t as good in my opinion. You gave up your life to protect Cortana and the dawn or the big ship cheif was on. With out you, cheif would’ve died and the covenant would have Cortana. Your character was a fucking badass
Inkling Boy that's the only reason you like more? That's not a very good reason or at least enough a reason. The best should have better and more fun missions. Great pacing and an epic story. Hitting on just 1 of these shouldn't win best campaign award. Halo 2 and 3 had the best story, CE had the best pacing, 3 had the best missions. Based off the based the best campaign would go to halo 3 (Halo 2s longer length is what puts it over 3 for many)
Halo reach had one of the best video game campaigns ever. It told an actual story in my opinion. Edit: holy shit this amount of nostalgia could kill a man
I’m still a hardcore believer that Reach was the most emotionally moving and visually pleasing game. Loved the MP. Totally get why other players don’t like it though
Correct me if I'm wrong, didn't Halsey have some scorn for noble team, except Jorge cause he's a Spartan II, due to them being Spartan III's and thus being a different project not under her control
InflamedCorgi you are sort of right. Jorge is obviously one of hers but the others make her confused and make her think someone is copying her/had another scientist make more Spartans differently at the same time. It’s later on when she realises that it was another program made afterwards
Wes Gilkey I always hated how ONI treated her like the criminal for what she did. Yeah it wasn't right but without her Spartan 2s, humanity loses the war. Her research made it possible for future programs to take her findings and improve on them with the updated tech. Let's not forget the Spartan 3s were kids too. They didn't go through all that the S2s had to go through but still kids. If anything it was worse cause they wanted to make them faster and cheaper and use them for suicide missions. But somehow she is the one to blame. I don't agree. No matter what they call all the future soldiers who wear the armor, they will never be true Spartans. S2s were the best cause they were bred to be the best and no one can come close to them. From 7 years old they trained together, ate, studied, fought and suffered together. They were the perfect squads and devoted themselves for humanity. Halsey did what was necessary and it turned out to be what saved all of humanity. They used her as a scapegoat when ONI knew exactly what was going on and they went along with it and funded it. If anything Halsey made sure everything was the best for them rather than treat them as a piece of military equipment
InflamedCorgi tbh spartan 3 program makes more sense than 2 where someone has to have near perfect genetics to even be viable but still die and 3 was orphans from glassed planets and trained much greater numbers
She seemed like she had a different opinion of the III's (at least Noble Team) in Reach than she did in Ghost of Onyx. Halsey seemed to feel sorry for the III's when she found out they were sent on one-way missions, and the majority of the III's were wiped out. If I remember right, she felt sorrier for Gamma Company due to them receiving mind-altering drugs to make them more aggressive when they reached high levels of stress. In the book Last Light, they needed a cocktail of drugs to calm down and not go insane. It seems like in Reach, she has some scorn for Noble because they seemed more (with the exception of Jorge) like puppets in her eyes.
21:37 The former Noble 6 that our character replaces is seen in the "Deliver Hope" trailer, it also shows how Kat loses her arm. Think his name was Tom.
Deliver hope makes me cry every time I watch it. The music, the cinematography, the actors WITH THEIR HELMETS ON (looks at halo series by paramount+). So beautiful.
Hey Act Man. I don't know if you will ever get this message but I thank you so much for entertaining me and making worth watching and reachable video's. I've been going through a lot of hell in life lately and all your video's help comfort me and keep me from being upset all the time and give me joy. The only video's I look forward to watching all the time. Thank you so much.
Its the best campaign and it kicks ass in the beginning and it gets sadder and sadder like a war would, it really hit me the first time I played it watching all of Nobel Team die one by one and then to play all the way up to 6 death.
I always thought of an alternate reality where in the last campaign lone wolf if you were good enough at the game you could start your own rebellion and slowly take back reach by yourself. Which would be impossible but still. Fun to think about.
Reach was perfect. My favorite Halo. I understood each member of Noble Team. You dont always need alot of screen time to understand and get to know each character. Less is sometimes more. Reach did that beautifully.
When less is more is done correctly we end up with characters like Boba fett. he only had a handful of lines and yet is one of the most beloved characters in the original trilogy.
Why does everyone hate odst. I loved that campaign. Even with halo 2. I wasn't even aware that the campaign was unpopular. The whole cliffhanger thing was hated. But at least it was a FULL satisfying campaign. Where as halo 5s campaign is just a prologue to halo 6.
Also I feel as if the halo 5 universe isn't realistic at ALL. I don't understand how master chief isn't just like allowed to do what ever he wants. Hes the reason for the defeat of the flood, and in halo 4 he SINGLE HANDEDLY SAVES EARTH FROM TOTAL ANNIHLATION FROM THE DIDACT
I think the point was after all that Chief has done, it's a little strange (pronounced "bad screenplay") for the UNSC to be so suddenly distrusting and antagonizing of him, not how "anything in real life works".
One little detail I like is that one the first mission (Winter Contigency), when you are getting dropped off at Kat's location. Depending on what way you are facing determines what side of the Falcon you exit.
What I found artistically amazing yet very brutal about Reach's character development: is that at least when I played the game, every character died the moment I was starting to attach to or appreciate them as characters. "I think I'm starting to like this guy, I'd say ___ is my favorite cha- NOOOOOO!!!! DON'T YOU JUST DIE LIKE THAT! BUNGIE WHYYYYY!!!!!!"
Same, I can't stand Emile's or Jorge's deaths mainly because those are the to I feel are closest to my personality, I LOVE knives but at the same time I'm caring, to a degree. 😈😎 lol
The subtleties in the characters is what makes Reach such a great game imo. It helps keep the focus on Reach, the setting, which SHOULD be the main focus of this game. At the same time, I truly think it fleshes out each character just enough that you feel like they're their own people with personality, flaws, goals, morals, dynamics, etc. without too much exposition or character dumping. I don't think you need more than that in this game. Again, it keeps the focus on the setting and I truly felt the gravity of the conflict throughout the game. Being a single Spartan group in a large planetary war really makes you feel like the situation is desperate and that your actions are crucial to stopping it. If there was more focus on each character, I think some of that feeling would be lost and that to me is the most important part of Reach: its a dire, hopeless situation but yet your role is essential for not just saving Cortana but allowing the events of the entire original trilogy to happen. That gives this game so much weight and emotion that, again, I think would be lost if too much focus was placed on each member of Noble team. And lastly, its so fucking cool that you can create your custom armor for the game including in every cutscene. It gives you so much investment in and connection to the story and the campaign. This game was controversial when it came out but looking back I think it was the perfect swan song to Bungie's Halo.
God damn. Amen to everything. I never specifically thought about the setting being the focus of a story, but it added a level of atmosphere and depth that worked out really well. I'm glad there's somebody else out there that realizes that not every character needs to be the shining paragon of a perfect character with deep backstories and the best fuckin' personalities that anyone's ever seen. A character doesn't NEED to be that, and if a character isn't that, that doesn't make them a bad character. Like you said: less is more.
Thanks man! It was kind of an epiphany when I thought about it. Reach is unique in the way that it makes the setting the main focus, or at least that's how I saw it
Buck is the only good thing about that team since we already know about Buck from Halo ODST! Why the fuck wasn't he the leader of Osiris instead of Locke?! A fight between Buck and Chef would've been far more amazing and their chemistry had so much potential since both of them fought long and hard in the war!
Nick Bleker that would be cool, but it would take some serious writing and motivation to justify Buck and chief fighting each other, which 343's writers don't seem to have a clue how to do either one.
Honestly, the whole Osiris hunting Blue Team was such a shit way to tell the story. The cutting back and forth worked in Halo 2, not so much in 5. It would have been okay if it was two separate campaigns. But yeah ODST was another great game story wise and Buck essentially as a cameo was a waste of resources. Now I would accept Locke a bit more if 343 had made a game after halo 4 with him as the main character so we could actually get to know him. We care about Chief we have had 3.5 games to get to know him, we care about Buck we had ODST to understand his motivations/character, nobody gives a fuck about Locke who's only character traits are: ONI and "Hates Chief for some reason."
To be fair, while Locke didn't get his own game, he did get his own movie that was supposed to introduce players to the character before Halo 5 launched. However, as with all non-game material, not everyone saw it. And even then, it's debatable as to whether or not it made anyone actually want to care about him.
The dialogue between the spartans is genuinely great. And i love that they tell you stuff about them without being beat over the head with it. Examples include Kat's arm, Jorge speaking Hungarian to the farmers, etc.

Half-Life is another great example. Honestly, besides the Nihilanth and Gonarch, I think Freeman is the only named character.
The Act Man the first halo game is another example of a setting-driven story.
"Six! That AI chose you. She made the right choice."
I remember hearing that line for the first time, and it gave me chills.
Halsey apparently stated that Noble 6 was the only Spartan III that was on-par with Master Chief...
But cortana didn't pick noble six right? Wasn't it dot? my lore knowledge is very rusty
What I like about Halo: Reach is that in order to win, you had to lose.
And what a beautiful loss we suffered along the inhabitants of Reach.
how ironic.

I feel Reach has a very similar story to FFVII: Crisis Core. Which is fine, because they are both great games.
I absolutely love that Noble 6 wears the custom armor you decide on in every cutscene and actually has the weapon that you were holding when the cutscene activates!
There are mid-mission cutscenes that show noble 6 :)
Except he only ever has an Assault Rifle and Magnum for those.
no he was talking about the weapon's and noble 6.
Mighty considering they say they’re gonna make halo games past MC’s story I hope they bring it back.
OMG Me too!!
"He gave his life thinking he just saved the planet, we should all be so lucky."
That whole segment was gut wrenching. As soon as he died and you think things are looking up, a whole covenant fleet showed up. Sometimes you just don't win.

Halo: Reach had a real military feeling, you aren't saving the galaxy, you're a normal soldier just following orders and I think that military feeling fits all of halo perfectly.
For REAL i see reach lowkey as like a memorial like we would do. But yes i see it more as soliders than heros too and i think its way cooler
Halo odst seems more like that than reach
@@vergilbaberuthofbaseball5983 it was definitly a more grounded and somber feel rather than being badass masterchief

I also like how the deaths sometimes happen so fast, symbolizing that in war, death can come so quickly, without notice.
@@oneshot8913 This!
Sudden and tragic, not like the movies
That's why his death hit me the most. His sacrifice did nothing, but only made things worse. His sacrifice was in vain.

Hahaha same bro. It’s a straight panty dropper
The way he said "back" got me
Emile was so iconic. Especially the way he went out. A straight G he was
@mskdxnightmare That was Jun who said "No, gonna steal it back."
But I think all the Noble Team was awesome in their own right.
You know, Halo Reach had a Dark Souls-esque level of story telling. Each map had a redder and redder sky, and you can see the world fall apart.
Is it bad that I laughed the first time I saw that?

The closest we get to a story about noble team was the live action trailer where the original Noble six died and Kat lost her arm
Also, imagine Noble Six made it onto the autumn. 1 UNSC ship. 1 Halo ring. One covenant fleet. 2 hyper lethal Spartans.
Gives me chills thinking about Noble 6 and Master Chief killing covenant together
Imagine the feeling of closeness and "BRO" that you get from Army of Two, but in Halo CE.
Sometimes when I play coop for halo ce I like to imagine the 2nd player as noble 6 if he survived.
That wasn't six actually that was the first six the noble six you see in campaign is the 2nd noble six in the trailer she loses her arm but in the campaign she then has the robot arm, the campaign took after the events if the trailer
Gravy Playz yeah that’s what he said...
So perfect.
Reach was in my eyes THE perfect Halo. You got to be your own Spartan thats all I needed.

The events of Reach always feel like the seminal event that sealed humanity’s fate.

My favourite line in the series
I think Halo Reach and Rogue one have a lot in common with each other. They have similar themes of the night being darkest just before the dawn. We see the lowest point of the Rebellion and UNSC, and the need for hope in their respective universes. Where Rogue One sets the stage for Luke Skywalker to save the galaxy, Reach sets it up for the Master Chief.
My thoughts exactly. I often refer to Rogue One as "The 'Halo: Reach' of Star Wars" when talking about it with people familiar with the game.
They also both retconned the original lore too. XD
Rogue one doesn’t have that
Except the entire plot of rogue one is made by stupid decisions
Griffin Long Negative Infinity, I don't like it.
Griffin Long this is why I felt so bad when emile and george died, I loved those guys so much and they're just dead, I feel like I was actually there and could have done something but I couldn't
Agreed ;-;
Griffin Long, yeah, many of the moments in the game really struck me. They were pretty depressing.
The thing I loved most about Reach was the raw grit you felt with everything. The weapons felt worn down, your surroundings felts washed out and dying, and the combat feels sharp in the best way possible. This will always be my favorite Halo game of all time

I started getting emotional when the nobles are starting to die until I'm the only one left, and that last mission is really good, makes you feel like you're in a movie, Halo : Reach is my first Halo game, I'm not one of those people who played Halo in their childhood and I'm glad I played it
Kat's death legit impacted me. It hurt. The suddenness of it was jarring.

Dunkirk is another example of setting-driven story, and I think that Reach and that movie are very similar in this way.
Oh yes nice comparison
It is, but I’d say there’s a difference in that Dunkirk is based off real war. It’s a very easy story to pick up, because there’s nothing a director needs to add to make it more about what it is. Dunkirk was about Dunkirk, and the people in it were all so important, yet unimportant. Again, Dunkirk is definitely setting driven, but I feel like the comparison is too easy! :)

What makes Jorge unique is that he is a Spartan II (like Chief) in a team full of Spartan III’s.

Markus Kraköwski so he was Achilles....his destiny was to die.

but it's known that he made entire militia groups dissappear completely

Always felt like Reach was like playing through one of those History Channel documentaries about specific battles that follow a specific squad except in the future and you're a part of it. very strange almost dream like.
Edit: Also one of my favorite touches of the scene where your character says "Sorry I came alone" is it's after 2 of the longest missions in the game and being separated from the rest of the squad. It takes so long before you or Nobel 6 can even really process the death of George.

Something I've noticed with Reach after playing it over and over is that almost every single frame of the cutscenes and gameplay seem to be filmed from a camera. It helps to think of Reach like a TV show.

Noble team is like that person you had an interaction with and could tell they’re really cool, but never got their number and think about from time to time. Bungie said “heres noble team, you’re gonna adore them, and you’re never going to see them again.” such is life
Lol this funny as hell, well said
18:29 That's a really good observation about how each member of Noble Team had an ironic death.

Thats why they are so close, because they've seen some shit and are the only two who truly know about it.
i don't think he mentioned anything about romance, he just hinted at a strong relationship which can make many things but I think you're right about those two
Mega Potato there was no previous noble 5
In winter contingency, when the zealots attack, noble 1 pushes noble 2 out of harms way.

Jorge: YOU CAN'T! SHE MUST STAND TRIAL
She’s to dangerous to be keeper alive
Yep. If Jorge was still alive, Halsey would have handed off Cortana to him.
Odst1: "Give em hell spartan."
Odst2: "They sure gave it to Reach."

The former Noble 6 that our character replaces is seen in the "Deliver Hope" trailer, it also shows how Kat loses her arm. Think his name was Tom.
Deliver hope makes me cry every time I watch it. The music, the cinematography, the actors WITH THEIR HELMETS ON (looks at halo series by paramount+). So beautiful.

Its the best campaign and it kicks ass in the beginning and it gets sadder and sadder like a war would, it really hit me the first time I played it watching all of Nobel Team die one by one and then to play all the way up to 6 death.
GhostOfRhurValley Jun didn’t die though
I always thought of an alternate reality where in the last campaign lone wolf if you were good enough at the game you could start your own rebellion and slowly take back reach by yourself. Which would be impossible but still. Fun to think about.
Reach was perfect. My favorite Halo. I understood each member of Noble Team. You dont always need alot of screen time to understand and get to know each character. Less is sometimes more. Reach did that beautifully.
When less is more is done correctly we end up with characters like Boba fett. he only had a handful of lines and yet is one of the most beloved characters in the original trilogy.
I was sad for days just thinking of how sad the story of reach is
My cousin didn’t even want to play it when he found out the whole team died
Why does everyone hate odst. I loved that campaign. Even with halo 2. I wasn't even aware that the campaign was unpopular. The whole cliffhanger thing was hated. But at least it was a FULL satisfying campaign. Where as halo 5s campaign is just a prologue to halo 6.
Also I feel as if the halo 5 universe isn't realistic at ALL. I don't understand how master chief isn't just like allowed to do what ever he wants. Hes the reason for the defeat of the flood, and in halo 4 he SINGLE HANDEDLY SAVES EARTH FROM TOTAL ANNIHLATION FROM THE DIDACT
crazynico101 because thats not how the military or anything in real life works
I think the point was after all that Chief has done, it's a little strange (pronounced "bad screenplay") for the UNSC to be so suddenly distrusting and antagonizing of him, not how "anything in real life works".
Yea that's pretty much what I meant
Halo 5 is completely and utterly the worst halo in the series
One little detail I like is that one the first mission (Winter Contigency), when you are getting dropped off at Kat's location. Depending on what way you are facing determines what side of the Falcon you exit.

What I found artistically amazing yet very brutal about Reach's character development: is that at least when I played the game, every character died the moment I was starting to attach to or appreciate them as characters. "I think I'm starting to like this guy, I'd say ___ is my favorite cha- NOOOOOO!!!! DON'T YOU JUST DIE LIKE THAT! BUNGIE WHYYYYY!!!!!!"
its like game of thrones lmao
Same, I can't stand Emile's or Jorge's deaths mainly because those are the to I feel are closest to my personality, I LOVE knives but at the same time I'm caring, to a degree. 😈😎 lol
Kat's hit the hardest, she is really cold with Noble 6 when you start the game but their relationship develops, then suddenly without warning....
ShaeCouture, true so true
Reach is unique in the way that it makes the setting the main focus, or at least that's how I saw it
Share this video with people that don't like the campaign! Perhaps they'll see another side they never saw before!

The Act Man hell yeah brother, great shit, looking forward to part 2.
The Act Man This is why I love Reach! Great vid, looking forward to the next one!
Osiris had one good thing going for them, Nathan Filion aka Buck.
We care about Chief we have had 3.5 games to get to know him, we care about Buck we had ODST to understand his motivations/character, nobody gives a fuck about Locke who's only character traits are: ONI and "Hates Chief for some reason."
its stupid that anyone thinks they can rival a Spartan II
To be fair, while Locke didn't get his own game, he did get his own movie that was supposed to introduce players to the character before Halo 5 launched. However, as with all non-game material, not everyone saw it. And even then, it's debatable as to whether or not it made anyone actually want to care about him.
The dialogue between the spartans is genuinely great. And i love that they tell you stuff about them without being beat over the head with it. Examples include Kat's arm, Jorge speaking Hungarian to the farmers, etc.
I always love being able to come up with my own character in a video game I think that's why I enjoyed Halo reaches armor customization so much.
