@@Purveyor_Of_Wrath augments and all? Im not super knowledgeable of the lore, but iirc the odst's get augments (like the spartans but not as extreme) that allow their bones to withstand the sheer force behind the pod slamming into the ground. Without these augments, their bones would be destroyed

Agreed. My Reach career was full body ODST armor. I hated that in Halo 5, you could only get armor pieces via supply drops. The Hell Jumper armor is bad ass.
I love how this game emphasizes how dangerous the covenant are to normal humans. Even as a special ops fully trained odst, without the Spartan armor and abilities, you can easily get your shit rocked by a brute and 2 grunts. It did an amazing job of demonstrating how dangerous and terrifying it would be to go up against these aliens as a normal human.
One thing I loved about ODST was how it was a lot like ww2 paratroopers because in CO-OP instead of just being spawned next to your teammates you have to find each other which still gives for a bit a sense of loneliness.
I don’t know if I already commented this but: @17:00 where you talk about the Silenced weapons; I ran a few tests and when using the Silenced weapons the enemies in your area will attack you, the enemies on other streets/sections will not. BUT if you use a human Sniper/Rocket Launcher then open your map you will see the enemies on other streets heading towards where you fired the loud weapons. Just something I noticed :)
Also, in reality suppressors aren't really meant to make guns more quiet, but rather to hide the muzzle flash from the barrel. While suppressors still make a gun more quiet, anybody would still be able to hear it.
I love how Bungie got the supressor concept right, it doesn't mute the gunshot but makes it easy to the ears. Which is the reason why sometimes the SMG or magnum alerts enemies
The Covenant doesn't seem to hear a suppressed weapon. There just aren't many enemies that can be killed quickly enough before they raise an alarm and you have to make sure they don't see the body drop.
Just to let you know it doesn’t actually work though any Covenant Species will hear it being fired as the bullet sound class is still Medium so any ai will here it.
I met Alan Tudyk, The voice of Mickey and the Wimpy Marine, and I asked him about his time in Halo. He explained about how he and Nathan Fillian were Halo Fans and they always wanted to voice act in it. So when Bungie found out, they did. I now have a signed copy of ODST addressed to the Rookie. He was a great Man. I wish we could see him again.
The quiet and contemplative atmosphere of The Rookie levels have continued to remain memorable to me No game makes you feel so lonely that encountering an enemy patrol is actually a relief

Yes, Johnson is one-step below Spartans and Arby. He is one of the last active duty survivors from Project Orion, the FIRST super soldier project. In Halo 2, he was in his late 60's and STILL out did a peak-physique marine EASILY!

The Act Man Idk if you knew but the audio logs in odst are pretty much a re-telling of The Divine Comedy! Every interaction Sadie has represents the different levels of hell that Dante goes through, and Sadie is guided by Vergil (The Superintendent) just like how Dante is guided by Virgil. Dude I was afraid to play ODST as a kid cause you dont have all that armor and feeling of invincibility. Youre vulnerable, alone and against a spread out armada. Not to mention its always nighttime. It was a scary game to me to play the Rookie missions
I remember always helping people out getting the "endure" achievement, giving a crash course in ODST mechanics, pistol for headshots, plasma pistol for shields, the risky tap on the back to OHKO chieftains(theyre never invincible), scavenge weapons/ammo/grenades in between rounds Oni alpha site was the map of choice, one of the two most experienced players at each side at the back, paired with the least experienced And then one day some dude gave me the DLC codes for halo wars for helping em out, he was just so happy to get it. I will never forget that strangers kindness
My hype towards ODST was INSANE. I was so excited for a new halo game. Couldn't wait to finally finish the vidmaster achievements, so I can finally get the glorious recon armor. Ahh, good times...
It's kinda sad what happens to the ODST characters after these events (SPOILERS); -Rookie is KIA 2 years later (killed in action), -Mickey (being the most disappointing) betrays the UNSC and becomes a rebel terrorist, -Dutch retires, -And lastly we all know what happened to Buck & Romeo (they join the spartan program).
I dont consider those events as canon as they're from the shitty 343 era of "lets make halo more about robots and terrorists instead of aliens, and lets retroactively ruin any character we can."
Rookie ODST Duh, he was the only one that wasnt a card board cut out. And theu had even planned his death. In the cut scene wear chief and locke fight, there is a released version where he wasnt grabbed before the thing fell in to molten what ever.

A very good and realistically important detail, if you were to give an operator (or anyone) a blood transfusion, if the wrong blood type is given they're as good as mortally screwed
@Forrest Mcgee Even normal units do this. I was in the Army. on our helmet band we have our First initial, and last with out last 4 of social, with blood type. Then we have CFC (casualty feeder cards) in our designted pocket per SOP. That also has our info on it, and on deployment our unit had a blood type patch onfront of our IOTV.

@@thewicked1862 Subsonic rounds are probably why the in-game SMG sucks so bad against everything. It's a trade-off; your rounds make less noise, but they don't hit nearly as hard unless the bullet is a certain size. That's probably why the subsonic SMG(5.7x28mm) performs poorly compared to the silenced magnum(12mm). You also have the sound of the bullet itself going off to contend with, so the enemy would still hear you.
What I love about the visor mode is how it emphasizes how alone you really are. There isn't any green in site, and the only living things besides the rookie are the enemies that are on almost every street, while you look around at the skyscrapers towering above you. It makes New Mombasa feel like a ghost town.
They could had gone faaaaar more dark though, i noticed there are barely any civilians, dead or not around. So it left me wondering what happened to them. My biggest theory is just that they had to cut out dead civilians out of the gamee so it could be sold
@@schuhsuppe7228 Not really. Its for FPS reasons. I play a game where you can create your own missions and with some mods I can basically recreate the ODST campaign. But every "object" (NPC, vehicle, static weapon) costs FPS. So to add a few dozen dead civilians, destroyed vehicles and soldiers in all the various squares would seriously reduce the frames and can easily ruin the games immersion. Besides, as you need to think when creating missions/games etc, is it really necessary? Take the few apartment buildings you enter in ODST, no toilets or beds in any of the rooms and the vast majority have very little to nothing in them. But because the game hints these rooms are bedrooms most don't care or even notice. There's enough destroyed vehicles and dead bodies to hint at the larger destruction without sacrificing gameplay and that's how it should be.
@@schuhsuppe7228 I think at the time the game was made was more based on resources being taken up by the lighting engine. During the rookies missions you basically get two separate layers of light rendered. Back in the day this would be expensive resource-wise, and on a system like the 360, its a small achievement on its own. Then couple in Marcus' point of models taking up fps (although they could've still ran with low-poly meshes if it weren't for the lighting), it becomes necessary to sacrifice some detail for better overall immersion, tone, and feel. I would love to see a true to form remaster with RTX, especially if 343i were to add in some darker detail to really drive home the vibe and hopelessness ODST did so well
You should have some level of knowledge or experience with enemy weapons. Something *will* go wrong. You *will* run out of ammo and you *will* need to pick up a new weapon.
You forgot 2 new game elements #4, you have a series high of a 12 grenade capacity. #5 The rookie's weapons never reset, I like this as I found it annoying in Halo CE when I left the level with a shotgun and 6 rockets but have to start with the salt gun assault rifle.
I loved how many grenades you were allowed to carry; sometimes I would horde all of them in the other games, saving them for a scenario that never happens. In ODST, I felt as though I could use them effectively for nearly every encounter. This was fantastic for FireFight.
I was really in love with ODST. I wish they did ODST like Medal of Honor airborne played. Multiple combat drop missions and you can kinda guide where you land and you fulfill the objectives.
Using a pervious game multiplayer to sell current game is lazy and a cash grab ODST could have been dlc for halo 3 back in the day but no Microsoft wanted more money Rewarding this behavior is bad for gamers
I like how Buck describes this (and events of the other Halo games) in Halo: New Blood such as how he states that Rookie was "playing detective in the middle of a warzone"
Also I like how New Blood expands their pre ODST relationship such as Buck's line of that he'd be less charming when he and Veronica first met if he'd known she was an ONI Spook

@@3men219 yeah, such as how Buck became a Spartan, some of the novels are great (such as Hunters in the Dark includes the 2 coop elites N'tho and Usze from Halo 3) but I don't think 343 should have the approach of "You need to read the books to know what's going on" (mainly for Buck and Blue Team)
The more I got older and matured, the more ODST became my favorite Halo game. I never cared to be in the spotlight saving the world as Chief, I found that the experience of playing as a Squad, looking out for each other was a lot more fun.
This is me 1000%. To be honest, I didn’t pay too much attention to Halo’s story because I played Halo 1-Reach when I was a teenager. But being almost 30yo now, I’ve replayed the whole series with newfound love for the universe, characters, events, and everything in between. I especially love ODST now because I don’t see the quiet, action-less moments as boring. I see it as desolate and sad BECAUSE of the events that transpired. You’re separated and in a city that’s completely wiped out and taken over. Anyways, Halo is aging like fine wine and ODST is some of the finest tasting.

I've got a theory why Rookie doesn't talk. Alone in a city full of hostiles, I'd say radio silence would be tactically sound, if the enemy has taken the city, maybe they could have tapped into comms.
Soldiers don't only talk on comms. Sure, they do it if far away like we seen in the game but they can still talk to each other. The Rookie doesn't talk to the Hell jumpers or Veronica and instead just nods or gives hand signals. He's just mute and that was a choice by the developers so the player can project onto the Rookie just like they did with Noble Six.

ODST will always be my favorite it's not as bombastic as the others with loads of explosions and flashy stuff it's more about the atmosphere and the feeling of being out numbered and out gunned.
The non-bombastic nature of ODST is exactly why so many people hate it. People hadn’t come off the insanely powerful energy of Halo 3 and ODST’s franchise milkage took a shit on that energy. No one asked for a stealth Halo game yet they had one shoved down their throats. ODST signified a change in direction and the down fall of the series.

No it didn't. Bungie handing it to 343 was the only downfall and i'm confident once 343 becomes more experienced it will be back to form. ODST is in my opinion the best game in the series because it does something different (very well at that) and doesn't just give you the same copy paste bullshit like Assassin's Creed or COD does which are both just terrible at this point. I love this game for the same reason i love the Metro games. For serious gamers, atmosphere makes or breaks a game and ODST kills it on atmosphere.
Reach and ODST are by far my favorite Halo games. As much as I love playing as the invincible Master Chief, the atmosphere in these games is just... masterful. You know you’re losing, so does everybody else. The feeling of hopelessness these games create is unlike any other game I’ve played. Bungie really went out on two absolute masterpieces.
Came here because I saw a “every halo game ranked including infinite” and the journalist said this. “Halo 3: ODST is a great experiment that doesn’t quite come together as a fun video game experience. Instead of a group of Spartans, it follows an ordinary crew of ODST marines (those folks that drop out of the sky in pods). Its characters are all a bit loud and obnoxious, its missions are largely forgettable, and the combat is less exciting when executed as a normal person. Part of the fantasy of Halo is playing as a giant alien or a big-ass super soldier. However, for its shortcomings, ODST actually has a really interesting, semi-open world format. ODST tries to do something different, and some of it works, but it ultimately misses.” Odst did exactly what it intended to do. Saying odst is a miss is straight up wrong. I just don’t see how such an atmosphere of sorrow, desolation, hopelessness, and despair executed so perfectly doesn’t make people enjoy this game. And apart from the equipment, odst plays very very very similarly to 3. If you like 3, you’d like odst.
Because it was executed so poorly; it was boring, and then is even worse because the protagonist is silent and nearly emotionless. I don't get a sense of ANY of those things because I don't know shit about these people, I have little real motivation most of the time, and the game yanks me out to play utterly different daytime missions that are actually, you know, fun, before throwing me back into wandering around kinda lost and bored. It doesn't really feel like Halo 3 because the bulk of the combat is just lame firefights in the same city streets over and over, lacking the immersion, the changing environments, the cool set-pieces, that Halo 3 had, mostly set to some smooth jazz music. Screwing up grenades, devices, and dual-wielding didn't help either.

I love odst as someone new to the halo franchise. I saw this review and I wasn't sure if I should get it. Because I thought I would regret it boy was I wrong. I loved this it was so good playing as everybody getting to know their personalities and character traits. In my opinion I love more felling like I'm in the dark no pun intended. Not knowing what the mission is and trying to find my team it's like losing your mom in the supermarket you got to find her and regroup. I like the feeling of not being a "god" and saving earth. But rather being a cog in the machine and helping a bit to make things go along easier and smoother. Just saying I loved the engineer even if you only got to see vrgl a bit I loved him. In the end I showed this to my friend hoping he would like it to. In the end I loved it and I recommend this game to anyone who loves a good story. I'm playing ODST again for the first time since 2010 and holy shit i love this game. I barely remember any parts of this game. Its like its brand new to me.
I think the text crawl at the beggining was flawless. Whenever the text "We are losing." pops up alongside the sad music, It really makes you want to get some good old fashioned revenge.
"Silencers" aren't silent. They only suppress the sounds, usually for when you don't want to use ear protection. That's why they're called suppressors.
ODST will always be in my memory because of the god damn Vidmaster: Endure achievement. I never managed to get it because on three separate occasions, the connection to the lobby dropped on the final wave, leading to many screams and one or two thrown controllers. All my friends went and got it without me so I’m forever alone in this pain.
Endure was a awesome challenge if you had a decent team you made it as long as you communicate and don’t be stupid. I’d love to get a fireteam together and just see how long we would last.
I didn't even realize until now that when Romeo points at Dare, she actually looks at him in pure shock and offense. I love small details like that which you'd only be able to see if you're really paying attention to the cutscenes.
I remembered when this game came out, I was playing it with my big bro an my dad an then started to explore.. then we saw a metal shutters blocking the road with a dead marine up against it with a message written on the shutters “remember reach” in blood Dunno what but it’s nice how they done that.. the sense of mystery

It has been quite the journey and at first I wasn't sure if I should do a video on ODST but the demand was certainly there the whole time and so I did it for all of you
...This game was good?... Really?... I thought everyone down played it as a DLC, a side plate of salad that was never touched, put next to the actual dish, the ultimate halo 3 multiplayer disc.
One of my favorite logs out of any halo game is in this one. The phone call with the mom who’s either with or trying to get to her daughter. And you hear the explosion of the slip space rupture and it just cuts out. Such good story telling.
I'm confident when I say that Halo 3 ODST have the best Soundtrack in all the game industry. In my opinion, there is no other Soundtrack that allows the player to imerge in a setting like this one. It brought me an experience with gaming that I'll carry for my life.
Am I the only one who absolutely hated everything about him? I swore that if they ever made him a Spartan, I'd drop the franchise. Needless to say, I've never played H4 Spartan Ops or any of H5.
One tiny detail I personally loved about Halo 3: ODST was that at 8:23 you can see Romeo's HUD indicates that his sniper rifle is lacking three rounds in the current mag, which is in line with the cutscene prior where he is shown firing three rounds at the Banshees that downed the Pelican he and Buck were supposed to evacuate in. That's some keen attention to detail right there.
Call me crazy, but I would love to see a remaster of ODST with the H2A treatment. Imagine this game with all of the advancements in graphics, lighting, and sound design we've had over the years. As cinematic as it is, with that sick mocap work we got in Halo 5, I'd fall in love with the game all over again.

omg this immediately makes me think of New Alexandria in reach where you fly around a dark city. Well it was huge with skyscrapers far taller than anything we have now so being down on the ground as the planet is glasses would be amazing.
Buck was an ODST during the fall of Reach, hell you can even see him if you play the Halo Reach game, while you play as Noble 6 in new alexandria you can see him on a roof. It would be cool to play as Buck while the fall of Reach
Technically you could play as him in ODST firefight if you pre-ordered the game or finished an entire firefight match (which meant going through all skulls). Just realized this is mentioned in the video, but I understand you want a full game.
It’s a shame I was so looking forward to Destiny before launch....speculating on what the campaign will be about and how it will play (given the history of bungie’s awesome single player campaigns) And when Destiny came out.....just smh
I really liked how they employed the suppressors, it's sad that a game that's set in the future where you fight aliens is one of the few games that actually are somewhat realistic with suppressors, they don't make your shots completely silent and undetectable, they literally just lower the muzzle register enough that it doesn't cause hearing damage when you don't use hearing protection, you might not be able to hear it from ways away but trust me, if you're in the area of a suppressed weapon being fired you'll still hear it plain as day. At the very least you'll hear the sonic boom off the rounds

I forget which Halo novel it was but it came out probably last year, where the cast of Halo 3: ODST are reunited as Spartan IVs, save for Rookie of course, bless his soul (It was stated prior to Buck's Spartan augmentation that had Rookie been still alive at this point, he would have been offered a place in the Spartan IV Program as well). Yes, in Halo: Bad Blood Mickey turns Insurrectionist but later on in this other novel he and Buck team up with Romeo, Dutch, and Dutch's wife Gretchen on another mission. Just like old times. It even hints that Mickey is slowly building up trust again within the team.
@@zen_7748 To be fair, the leader of the insurrectionists is the Dad of one of the original spartan 2's who never believed his daughter died. Said it was a fake clone and when his world fell, he turned on the UNSC. He was also completely correct with his suspicions. So, the insurrectionists are not bad guys at all. In fact I'd argue ONI are pre evil dudes.
ODST is such a beautiful experience, and even more so when blasted on legendary with friends and rocks more when you get all the audio logs and the "legendary under 3 hours" achievements
This is my favorite halo game and is probably in my top 5 of all time as well. The unique feeling that I got while playing as Rookie is something no other game will ever be able to replicate. Bravo bungie, bravo.
If I may say I always loved the rookie being mute; I always thought he was scared as hell.... after all it's one of your first mission, after 5 minutes you lost contact with all your team, almost broke a leg once you step out of the capsule, literally the only live being are covenant..... I dunno you, but I would be pretty scared. Also, do you seriously wanna talk above Martin o'Donnell's themes?
I vaguely remember playing ODST when I was like 5. I was scared shitless of the brutes and I had to have my dad complete the levels for me while I watched..
I played this game when I was seven I was never scared of the brutes cause A: I killed them too fast and shot them too fast too see their face B: they did option A to me
I did t learn about the weapon caches until my second playthrough. At first I was like man I don't like this different style halo game. On the second playthrough I fell in love with it and it became my favorite halo game of all time.
I think Halo 3: ODST was definitely worth sixty bucks. It has two sides to the game. First, your Rook, who's stumbling around the city in the dark, trying to figure out what happened to Buck and his squad. Then, your various members of Buck's squad, fighting to try and meet up with each other before it's too late. I like this sort of cat and mouse game that they play. Also, Rook doesn't have enough ammo to kill all the enemies he runs into, so the player has to be smart, and pick his battles wisely, because, if I'm correct, I think that you could sneak around some Brutes??? Right??? Oh well. I like the game. It's one of the best, and I think that it was cool that Buck became a Spartan he just shouldn't have been in a shitty game. I really agree that the quiet and open space makes you feel small and unimportant, compared to how Master Chief slams through a Covenant base full of Jackals, and Grunts with a Warthog full of incompetent Marines. It makes you more worried about how you're fighting. If you're going to try to go in guns blazing, you're just going to get yourself killed. But if you go slow and take you're time going to complete the mission. I especially love the mission where the Space Elevator falls, because then we know what the wreckage is in Halo 3.
The only complaint I remember was not having matchmaking in firefight. It was a great addition to the game, I loved playing it but never got a couple Vidmaster awards because I didn't have enough help. I thought Firefight was better in ODST than Reach except lack of matchmaking.
Talking over the RADIO while descending into atmosphere, through cloud layers and massive pressure changes at terminal velocity would sound TERRIBLE. The problem isn't the helmet microphones

My one big complaint about ODST is that I friggin love the silenced SMG and pistol, but you never have that much ammo for either of them, which has been a problem for the series since Halo 2. There's just barely enough ammo for human weapons to survive a single firefight, but by the time you get into another fight you have to resort to the filthy Covey weapons.
MrRotch61 you really needed the audio logs to unlock the caches. Once you get all of them then ammo is no longer a problem and you can even have mongooses for an entire 4 Marine fireteam.
A small detail I like about this game too is before mission 'cutscenes', any of the characters you are about to control that fired their weapon, reflects it in your HUD when you control that character. i.e Romeo's sniper rifle have 3 shots fired.
I always felt that halo 3 was the shortest campaign. With odst you get the day missions but attached to most of them is a night mission as rookie, plus odst actually has more missions than halo 3. I always liked the visual storytelling in odst. In one mission you walk into a building and find a dead marine and a bunch of grunts with a dead brute, if you pay attention to some blood on the ground you find that it leads up the stairs in a foot print pattern, there's blood on the stair railing where the wounded alien grabbed it, and at the top there's a dead grunt in a pool of his own blood, he bled out alone and afraid. 0-0 holy shit possibly the most humanized unngoy in the halo games.
I thought the coolest part of H3 ODST was when the ODST’s got a protective shield from the engineer, I think being aided by a once considered enemy kind of like the arbiter and the elites in base H3 is awesome. H3 ODST - 9.9/10

I love how this game emphasizes how dangerous the covenant are to normal humans. Even as a special ops fully trained odst, without the Spartan armor and abilities, you can easily get your shit rocked by a brute and 2 grunts. It did an amazing job of demonstrating how dangerous and terrifying it would be to go up against these aliens as a normal human.
Halo is a stimulation of our reality. There will absolutely be a time in the future where this war of worlds will become humanities reality.
And the fact that the ODST are only slightly modified to make sure they survive impact, it’s still terrifying

One thing I loved about ODST was how it was a lot like ww2 paratroopers because in CO-OP instead of just being spawned next to your teammates you have to find each other which still gives for a bit a sense of loneliness.

@17:00 where you talk about the Silenced weapons; I ran a few tests and when using the Silenced weapons the enemies in your area will attack you, the enemies on other streets/sections will not. BUT if you use a human Sniper/Rocket Launcher then open your map you will see the enemies on other streets heading towards where you fired the loud weapons.

Also, in reality suppressors aren't really meant to make guns more quiet, but rather to hide the muzzle flash from the barrel. While suppressors still make a gun more quiet, anybody would still be able to hear it.

I love how Bungie got the supressor concept right, it doesn't mute the gunshot but makes it easy to the ears. Which is the reason why sometimes the SMG or magnum alerts enemies
Halo 3 odst was my first introduction to supressors. So the fact that suppressors don’t alert enemies sometimes always bugs me a little.
The Covenant doesn't seem to hear a suppressed weapon. There just aren't many enemies that can be killed quickly enough before they raise an alarm and you have to make sure they don't see the body drop.

A very good and realistically important detail, if you were to give an operator (or anyone) a blood transfusion, if the wrong blood type is given they're as good as mortally screwed

@@thewicked1862 Subsonic rounds are probably why the in-game SMG sucks so bad against everything. It's a trade-off; your rounds make less noise, but they don't hit nearly as hard unless the bullet is a certain size. That's probably why the subsonic SMG(5.7x28mm) performs poorly compared to the silenced magnum(12mm). You also have the sound of the bullet itself going off to contend with, so the enemy would still hear you.
What I love about the visor mode is how it emphasizes how alone you really are. There isn't any green in site, and the only living things besides the rookie are the enemies that are on almost every street, while you look around at the skyscrapers towering above you. It makes New Mombasa feel like a ghost town.
They could had gone faaaaar more dark though, i noticed there are barely any civilians, dead or not around. So it left me wondering what happened to them. My biggest theory is just that they had to cut out dead civilians out of the gamee so it could be sold
@@schuhsuppe7228 Not really. Its for FPS reasons. I play a game where you can create your own missions and with some mods I can basically recreate the ODST campaign. But every "object" (NPC, vehicle, static weapon) costs FPS. So to add a few dozen dead civilians, destroyed vehicles and soldiers in all the various squares would seriously reduce the frames and can easily ruin the games immersion. Besides, as you need to think when creating missions/games etc, is it really necessary? Take the few apartment buildings you enter in ODST, no toilets or beds in any of the rooms and the vast majority have very little to nothing in them. But because the game hints these rooms are bedrooms most don't care or even notice. There's enough destroyed vehicles and dead bodies to hint at the larger destruction without sacrificing gameplay and that's how it should be.
@@schuhsuppe7228 I think at the time the game was made was more based on resources being taken up by the lighting engine. During the rookies missions you basically get two separate layers of light rendered. Back in the day this would be expensive resource-wise, and on a system like the 360, its a small achievement on its own. Then couple in Marcus' point of models taking up fps (although they could've still ran with low-poly meshes if it weren't for the lighting), it becomes necessary to sacrifice some detail for better overall immersion, tone, and feel. I would love to see a true to form remaster with RTX, especially if 343i were to add in some darker detail to really drive home the vibe and hopelessness ODST did so well
They need to remaster this game and allow you to go into every building especially the skyscrapers

#5 The rookie's weapons never reset, I like this as I found it annoying in Halo CE when I left the level with a shotgun and 6 rockets but have to start with the salt gun assault rifle.
I loved how many grenades you were allowed to carry; sometimes I would horde all of them in the other games, saving them for a scenario that never happens.
In ODST, I felt as though I could use them effectively for nearly every encounter. This was fantastic for FireFight.
I’ll never be able to think of it as anything but the “Bug-a-salt Rifle” from now on.

The more I got older and matured, the more ODST became my favorite Halo game. I never cared to be in the spotlight saving the world as Chief, I found that the experience of playing as a Squad, looking out for each other was a lot more fun.
This is me 1000%. To be honest, I didn’t pay too much attention to Halo’s story because I played Halo 1-Reach when I was a teenager. But being almost 30yo now, I’ve replayed the whole series with newfound love for the universe, characters, events, and everything in between.
I especially love ODST now because I don’t see the quiet, action-less moments as boring. I see it as desolate and sad BECAUSE of the events that transpired. You’re separated and in a city that’s completely wiped out and taken over. Anyways, Halo is aging like fine wine and ODST is some of the finest tasting.

Soldiers don't only talk on comms. Sure, they do it if far away like we seen in the game but they can still talk to each other. The Rookie doesn't talk to the Hell jumpers or Veronica and instead just nods or gives hand signals. He's just mute and that was a choice by the developers so the player can project onto the Rookie just like they did with Noble Six.

No it didn't. Bungie handing it to 343 was the only downfall and i'm confident once 343 becomes more experienced it will be back to form. ODST is in my opinion the best game in the series because it does something different (very well at that) and doesn't just give you the same copy paste bullshit like Assassin's Creed or COD does which are both just terrible at this point. I love this game for the same reason i love the Metro games. For serious gamers, atmosphere makes or breaks a game and ODST kills it on atmosphere.
Reach and ODST are by far my favorite Halo games. As much as I love playing as the invincible Master Chief, the atmosphere in these games is just... masterful. You know you’re losing, so does everybody else. The feeling of hopelessness these games create is unlike any other game I’ve played. Bungie really went out on two absolute masterpieces.
How I wished Bungie would get it's shit together, reclaim Halo from 343 and make it as legendary as before.

Odst did exactly what it intended to do. Saying odst is a miss is straight up wrong. I just don’t see how such an atmosphere of sorrow, desolation, hopelessness, and despair executed so perfectly doesn’t make people enjoy this game. And apart from the equipment, odst plays very very very similarly to 3. If you like 3, you’d like odst.
Because it was executed so poorly; it was boring, and then is even worse because the protagonist is silent and nearly emotionless. I don't get a sense of ANY of those things because I don't know shit about these people, I have little real motivation most of the time, and the game yanks me out to play utterly different daytime missions that are actually, you know, fun, before throwing me back into wandering around kinda lost and bored. It doesn't really feel like Halo 3 because the bulk of the combat is just lame firefights in the same city streets over and over, lacking the immersion, the changing environments, the cool set-pieces, that Halo 3 had, mostly set to some smooth jazz music. Screwing up grenades, devices, and dual-wielding didn't help either.

I love odst as someone new to the halo franchise. I saw this review and I wasn't sure if I should get it. Because I thought I would regret it boy was I wrong. I loved this it was so good playing as everybody getting to know their personalities and character traits. In my opinion I love more felling like I'm in the dark no pun intended. Not knowing what the mission is and trying to find my team it's like losing your mom in the supermarket you got to find her and regroup. I like the feeling of not being a "god" and saving earth. But rather being a cog in the machine and helping a bit to make things go along easier and smoother. Just saying I loved the engineer even if you only got to see vrgl a bit I loved him. In the end I showed this to my friend hoping he would like it to. In the end I loved it and I recommend this game to anyone who loves a good story. This review actman it was great good job on the video.👍

ODST will always be in my memory because of the god damn Vidmaster: Endure achievement.
I never managed to get it because on three separate occasions, the connection to the lobby dropped on the final wave, leading to many screams and one or two thrown controllers. All my friends went and got it without me so I’m forever alone in this pain.

...This game was good?... Really?... I thought everyone down played it as a DLC, a side plate of salad that was never touched, put next to the actual dish, the ultimate halo 3 multiplayer disc.

One of my favorite logs out of any halo game is in this one. The phone call with the mom who’s either with or trying to get to her daughter. And you hear the explosion of the slip space rupture and it just cuts out. Such good story telling.
Halo 3 ODST has the best atmosphere in the whole series. Also, has the best soundtrack in the series.

I'm confident when I say that Halo 3 ODST have the best Soundtrack in all the game industry. In my opinion, there is no other Soundtrack that allows the player to imerge in a setting like this one. It brought me an experience with gaming that I'll carry for my life.

One tiny detail I personally loved about Halo 3: ODST was that at 8:23 you can see Romeo's HUD indicates that his sniper rifle is lacking three rounds in the current mag, which is in line with the cutscene prior where he is shown firing three rounds at the Banshees that downed the Pelican he and Buck were supposed to evacuate in. That's some keen attention to detail right there.
Honestly I’m hoping that FireFight comes back for Halo 6.

Call me crazy, but I would love to see a remaster of ODST with the H2A treatment. Imagine this game with all of the advancements in graphics, lighting, and sound design we've had over the years. As cinematic as it is, with that sick mocap work we got in Halo 5, I'd fall in love with the game all over again.

omg this immediately makes me think of New Alexandria in reach where you fly around a dark city. Well it was huge with skyscrapers far taller than anything we have now so being down on the ground as the planet is glasses would be amazing.
Buck was an ODST during the fall of Reach, hell you can even see him if you play the Halo Reach game, while you play as Noble 6 in new alexandria you can see him on a roof.

I really liked how they employed the suppressors, it's sad that a game that's set in the future where you fight aliens is one of the few games that actually are somewhat realistic with suppressors, they don't make your shots completely silent and undetectable, they literally just lower the muzzle register enough that it doesn't cause hearing damage when you don't use hearing protection, you might not be able to hear it from ways away but trust me, if you're in the area of a suppressed weapon being fired you'll still hear it plain as day. At the very least you'll hear the sonic boom off the rounds

I forget which Halo novel it was but it came out probably last year, where the cast of Halo 3: ODST are reunited as Spartan IVs, save for Rookie of course, bless his soul (It was stated prior to Buck's Spartan augmentation that had Rookie been still alive at this point, he would have been offered a place in the Spartan IV Program as well). Yes, in Halo: Bad Blood Mickey turns Insurrectionist but later on in this other novel he and Buck team up with Romeo, Dutch, and Dutch's wife Gretchen on another mission. Just like old times. It even hints that Mickey is slowly building up trust again within the team.
@@zen_7748 To be fair, the leader of the insurrectionists is the Dad of one of the original spartan 2's who never believed his daughter died. Said it was a fake clone and when his world fell, he turned on the UNSC. He was also completely correct with his suspicions. So, the insurrectionists are not bad guys at all. In fact I'd argue ONI are pre evil dudes.

ODST is such a beautiful experience, and even more so when blasted on legendary with friends and rocks more when you get all the audio logs and the "legendary under 3 hours" achievements
I miss the firefight mode so much. That is the mode I have the most fond memories of from playing Halo with my friends.

This is my favorite halo game and is probably in my top 5 of all time as well. The unique feeling that I got while playing as Rookie is something no other game will ever be able to replicate. Bravo bungie, bravo.

If I may say I always loved the rookie being mute; I always thought he was scared as hell.... after all it's one of your first mission, after 5 minutes you lost contact with all your team, almost broke a leg once you step out of the capsule, literally the only live being are covenant..... I dunno you, but I would be pretty scared.

I think Halo 3: ODST was definitely worth sixty bucks. It has two sides to the game. First, your Rook, who's stumbling around the city in the dark, trying to figure out what happened to Buck and his squad. Then, your various members of Buck's squad, fighting to try and meet up with each other before it's too late. I like this sort of cat and mouse game that they play. Also, Rook doesn't have enough ammo to kill all the enemies he runs into, so the player has to be smart, and pick his battles wisely, because, if I'm correct, I think that you could sneak around some Brutes??? Right??? Oh well. I like the game. It's one of the best, and I think that it was cool that Buck became a Spartan he just shouldn't have been in a shitty game.
I really agree that the quiet and open space makes you feel small and unimportant, compared to how Master Chief slams through a Covenant base full of Jackals, and Grunts with a Warthog full of incompetent Marines. It makes you more worried about how you're fighting. If you're going to try to go in guns blazing, you're just going to get yourself killed. But if you go slow and take you're time going to complete the mission. I especially love the mission where the Space Elevator falls, because then we know what the wreckage is in Halo 3.
Not to mention ODST had the horde mode and a separate disc that was halo 3's multiplayer. If you didnt have halo 3 it was definitely worth $60
The only complaint I remember was not having matchmaking in firefight. It was a great addition to the game, I loved playing it but never got a couple Vidmaster awards because I didn't have enough help. I thought Firefight was better in ODST than Reach except lack of matchmaking.

An expert in our midst
My one big complaint about ODST is that I friggin love the silenced SMG and pistol, but you never have that much ammo for either of them, which has been a problem for the series since Halo 2. There's just barely enough ammo for human weapons to survive a single firefight, but by the time you get into another fight you have to resort to the filthy Covey weapons.
MrRotch61 you really needed the audio logs to unlock the caches. Once you get all of them then ammo is no longer a problem and you can even have mongooses for an entire 4 Marine fireteam.
A small detail I like about this game too is before mission 'cutscenes', any of the characters you are about to control that fired their weapon, reflects it in your HUD when you control that character. i.e Romeo's sniper rifle have 3 shots fired.
Don't forget that Buck, Dutch, and Mickey are essentially a Firefly reunion.
I always felt that halo 3 was the shortest campaign. With odst you get the day missions but attached to most of them is a night mission as rookie, plus odst actually has more missions than halo 3. I always liked the visual storytelling in odst. In one mission you walk into a building and find a dead marine and a bunch of grunts with a dead brute, if you pay attention to some blood on the ground you find that it leads up the stairs in a foot print pattern, there's blood on the stair railing where the wounded alien grabbed it, and at the top there's a dead grunt in a pool of his own blood, he bled out alone and afraid. 0-0 holy shit possibly the most humanized unngoy in the halo games.
Halo 3 is king and always will be however odst has its moments it just isn't as solid an experience as 3

Actually in odst you throw farther because the grenade arcs at your cross hairs instead of half way below the screen in every other halo game.

I thought the coolest part of H3 ODST was when the ODST’s got a protective shield from the engineer, I think being aided by a once considered enemy kind of like the arbiter and the elites in base H3 is awesome.

The main theme is an absolute tune. Makes you feel both hopeless for these "average soldiers" and also serene beautiful for rainy Mombasa
