In 1968, I worked over night at a Clark Gas Station. In the wee hours of the morning, after the bars closed, when it was dead, I’d crank up the radio in the gas station, open the front door, and listen to this song, Incense&Peppermints, Honey, and other songs of that year. The station had floor to ceiling glass all around. The tunes would rattle those big windows, and that sweet experience has stayed with me from age 17, up to today at age 72. Man, it was a beautiful time for music.

Sounds like a great remembrance. The '60s had great music and 1966 was the best overall year of that decade, I think. There was one great song after another, all year long, then.

That beautiful orchestral sound disappeared with the end of "The Wrecking Crew", & Phil Spector's "Wall Of Sound", the session musicians who actually played the instruments on so many of the fantastic songs of that era, and never got the credit. Same with the Motown sound, the musicians of "The Funk Brothers". They are the true unsung heroes of the greatest music of the 60s & 70s. 🙂

The studio musicians did not play on all their songs and they had no creative input. The importance of the so-called Wrecking Crew has been exaggerated because of that documentary. They now get credit for things they didn't do because the documentary gave people the idea that they played on everything. There was no Wrecking Crew. That was a term made up by Hal Blaine many years later. Carol Kaye thought it was ridiculous because there was no group. They were hired hands, nothing more. Tommy Tedesco himself said he could never understand why the studio required studio musicians when the Association was capable of playing themselves.

Me too. I was only 14 when the 60s ended, so I wish a bit that I'd been born somewhat earlier--Could've bought my brother's '66 Olds 442 ( a convertible; in NJ!) I've had some really memorable experiences in cars, but performance wise & that rush that comes with it--nothing topped riding in THAT car, particularly when he put his foot into it. That was real power. But I caught just enough of the 60s to get the flavor/mood, to get primed for the 70s--Also a great decade in many ways. (Sure, we can pick at it, & point out flaws; but we can do so for a lot of decades).
But if there really is "Karma", and to not have upset the Space-Time Continuum, I reckon God put me where I needed to be--NOT ALWAYS where I WANTED to be. Wouldn't it be wild to see all the events unfold WITHOUT "You" (me)? I would want that angel to tell me what effect my absence had, like in "It's a Wonderful Life" . Yet I just don't know if I'd want to see what happened , starting back then without me, to the girl I started dating /got engaged to/broke up with /re-engaged to now. Reality was was quite enough for her & I the past 44 years.

I'd save my lunch money and ride my Schwinn Sting Ray to the local record store to buy 45's. I still have this 45... and I still have my Schwinn Sting Ray.
To all those here complaining there's no good music anymore... It's still out there. You have to actively seek it. It isn't much on any commercial radio stations for sure. But, with the internet you can find it. You can get very specific with your choices. An example of one I listen to from Castlemain, Australia is called "IT'S A JANGLE OUT THERE". I'd post a link, but You Tube won't allow it. Also seek out Radio Paradise... one of the best internet stations out there.

My brother and I sing/play music for The Center for Spiritual Living- Houston Teaching Chapter. I tend to be the one that will occasionally do songs by artists who have recently died (my tributes), choosing songs that reflect the topic we are discussing for the service. This month's topic was "Love Out Loud," and this particular song pops in my head in the morning of this past Saturday (9/23), so I chose it for this Sunday's service, not finding out until THIS MORNING (9/25) that Terry Kirkman had died on Saturday! I've always felt a special connection with a lot of music from The Association, so I know that I was divinely inspired! Thank you, Terry, for the gift of your music!
