      If you use thinner-walled glass bottles, the heat difference bends the glass instead of shattering it. A thicker-walled glass bottle would shatter

      not all glass will shatter under changing temps, probably made from a stronger glass that can withhold the differences

    Make sure to use borosilicate glass containers. They can withstand fast changes of temperature. It's brand name is Pyrex.

      @@sarahsunshine7248 This is not definitively proven. Pyrex containers come in various labels and the capital P does not guarantee borosilicate. There are some other ways to check if you have borosilicate. I don't know why Pyrex can't just label it "borosilicate" on their packaging.

      Old Pyrex is tempered, new Pyrex is just glass.
      Other old brands like Fire King are a good bet because their brand was based on their glass being tempered.
      Even Anchor Hocking or Arcoroc are worth double checking.
      (Source: I work in an antique shop and learn about this stuff all day)
      Also, new lab ware (or used as long as it hasn’t been rendered unfit to be used with food)

    Freeze the shots of espresso in small silicon ice cube trays. Once frozen put the cubes in a bag and keep in the freezer. When you want an italian iced coffee make an espresso and add the cubes to a blender and pour the hot espresso over it. Pulse until it reaches your desired slushiness.

      If a recipe calls for 4 cups of mayonnaise and 1 cup pf ketchup, that doesn’t mean a serving size is 5 cups altogether. It doesn’t mean the recipe is saying you should consume literally all of what you made.
      The proportions are so, you have enough for multiple people, and so that the consistency is correct.
      You dont bake 3 cookies because thats the serving size, you bake a dozen so you have extra.

    My friend’s mom from Sicily does something similar but she adds sugar before she freezes it, so the slushy is sweet when she serves it on a hot summer day.

      It’s true. Thermal expansion also happens to cast iron pans as well. Whenever I have to clean an iron pan after using it on a stove I would have to wait several minutes and then clean it with hot water instead of cold or even room temperature water. I do this so that the pan doesn’t go through thermal shock and doesn’t create a crack.

      That's not how physics works buddy, you need to go from one extreme to the other, 20° to 100° is nowhere near fast enough of a temperature change nor is it extreme enough. Or if you're French it would be around -2° to like 60° or so

    For people wondering, there are types of glass containers that are designed for extreme temperatures and fluctuations. I believe pyrex is the name of the brand. Thats what things like glass measuring cups and baking dishes are made of.

      PYREX all caps is the brand. pyrex will shatter in your hands. Honestly, I wouldn't trust either anymore because they sold us out by selling their name pyrex in the first place and allowing the discrepancy without anyone knowing. People have been seriously injured.

    I think this is a thing in southern Italy btw. Just so tourists seeing this video don’t get disappointed lol. I lived in Florence for several months and never saw this. But I read about it online a lil and others in the comment section here are mentioning that it’s a thing in southern Italy. They’re not that into icey things in Florence besides gelato lol

    How I do this at home:
    Put coffe in a glass bottle, freeze it vertically, than take it out, put it in a big enough (I use a much smaller bottle than him) cup of hot tap water (not boiling water) so that the coffee gradually melts, when it is half liquid and half frozen shake it hard so that has that peculiar consistency.
    Also I enjoy hot espresso without sugar, but this needs sugar, cold bitter coffee really isn't great if you ask me. So just put some sugar in the coffee before freezing it.

    We actually use glass cubes and shake them with a freshly poured espresso. Sugar can be added as a syrup if one wants.

    If you do make it, use a steel vessel than glass. Then reason is, if you pour hot liquid into a ice cold glass vessel, it will explode.

    That is cool but Ive never seen this had in Italy and my Italian friends had never heard of it (one from Florence, one from Torino and one from Milan). Is this an "Italian" iced coffee or did you see an Italian make it once? Two very different things because if its the latter, microwaving white bread with a slice of american cheese and eating it with cold fish and chips fish is now an Australian grilled cheese because i saw an Aussie do it once.

      My only issue is the wording, it should be called a frozen coffee, not an iced coffee, when ice is never added.
      We’ve had frozen coffee drinks for years, usually they have Italian sounding (to Americans) names, like Frappuccino, or Coolatte. It’s just weird because iced tea, iced water, iced coffee, are all drinks that we add ice to, & slushy drinks, we add the word frozen to, like frozen lemonade

    I like the original iced coffee, as we do it in Greece. No machines and specialised equipment and way cheaper and easier to make.

    As someone who is friends with an italian from Rome, the first time he asked me if i want iced coffee i thought he was trolling me, he literally put a shot of expresso in a glass with a couple of ice cubes, and said don't worry i added a teaspoon of sugar so it isn’t bitter.

    Never ever ever seen that here in Italy! Italian iced coffee is called shakerato. Nothing like this.

      simply take a single shot of espresso, add some ice cubes and put them in the shaker tool (like barista use for cocktail). Put it into a nice glass, usually a cone shaped glass but whatever you prefer and add whatever you want on top, cocoa, chocolate, or as we do a single coffee bean. Drink will be refreshing with a nice foam on top@@BentleyGadget

    I'm from north east part of Italy, unfortunately I never had this type of ice coffee but I will absolutely try it this summer.
    When you order Ice coffee here they put coffee and ice in to a shaker, I love it ❤

    Barista suggestion: hold the shots with water. Not enough water to make an Americano, but enough to stop the espresso from oxidizing and getting that horrible burnt tangy taste. You could also hold it with simple syrup, I guess. Or milk. Just something to hold it and keep it from going yucky.

    I ordered an iced coffee in a random little cafe Rome. They looked at me like I'm mad. I said "just make a regular coffee, and put ice in it!
    So i had a hot coffee, in a small latte glass with an oversized cylindrical icecube in it that tasted slightly sour.
    Yeah, iced coffee isn't really a thing in Italy for most people, even on 40-degree days.

      Italian coffee culture is very varied it seems. I’m not much of a coffee drinker, but something that comes close to the video is the granita al caffè that I have had in Naples once.

    Just freeze coffee into ice tray. Then out them into a blender with warm coffee.. voila! Same results w/o glass shattering.

    Tastes really good! Also works scaled down for me. I dose 18g of coffee grinds and pull two espresso shots with it, repeat that and after it’s frozen only use one shot to melt it, afterwards I drink it myself 😂

    guys chill out the bottle wont shatter since its been frozen on its side rather than standing up there wont be heat going around the entire glass in a ring shape which is what is needed to break glass with thermo expansion

    Pro tip. If you live in a hot dry area drinking hot coffee or tea will actually cool you down. It sound counterintuitive but it makes you sweat which will cool you down. It doesn’t really work well in hot humid areas though.

    Reminds me of my time in Sicily. The locals usually make this with Bialetti type stove-top coffee makers, so it’s not quite the same strength as espresso, but definitely stronger than your average pour-over.

    Patricio, the local barrista in Montreal North, would spend summer days pulling out the bottle from the freezer, shake it, Leave a bit on the countertop, put it back and so on keeping it just slushy enough. A top Montreal Barrista.

    Italian coffee beans are usually borderline burnt, idk if that translates well when you’re not using fresh Italian espresso because it becomes harshly bitter when you let it sit too long.

      You can find several similar versions either made with mock pot or the fact that coffee granita made like this (usually with sugar) is popular in the south. As well as shakerato and similar versions akin to the Greek espresso Fredo. You also see this professional settings in a ‘slushy’ machine. Again. Usually diluted, and sweetened.
      Italians are synonymous with gatekeeping, whether it be coffee and food. That their one Version from their village is the only way.
      What science backs this up? There are so many tempered glass bottles you can buy.
      It’s an interesting case study on behavior that people lean towards faceless comments as truth rather than what’s posted.

    Hear me out guys, and this won’t work for everyone: freeze the espresso into ice cubes, then (and this is why it won’t work for everyone) dump the cubes & fresh espresso into a metal cocktail shaker to mix it all up
