    Just gotta say I'm a fan of your kitchen. Too many youtubers have super duper clean and organised kitchens with state of the art equipment, kinda makes you feel you're in a different world to them. Your kitchen looks like the kitchen of a normal dude, I like it.

      It's my home kitchen, so it definitely is a heavily used area 😂 I too am not a fan of these sterile kitchens... just tells me that no one ever really cooks there

    I am the granddaughter of a coffee farmer, who wasn’t able to drink coffee until I was 20.
    Turns out my problem was with the overly sweet very strong Brazilian way of drinking coffee.
    I discovered I liked black coffee many years after my grandpa passed. What got me to like coffee was Japanese canned black coffee. I’m sorry I couldn’t drink grandpa’s coffee. But I still cherish the memories of playing in the coffee dried peels.

      That's awesome! I went on a mission trip to Nicaragua many years ago. We stayed at a place that was on a working coffee plantation. The main coffee fields were on the top of the mountain, but down in the valley where we stayed, they were dotted along the hillside alone with wild hydrangea and orchids, with walking trails. There were old cement and wooden sifters and other processing contraptions there as well. Very rustic and cool.

    I’ve spent so much money on coffee makers, only to realize that the sole two “makers” I, a coffee addict, need in life are the Kalita Wave 185 Dripper and the French Press. They are so much cheaper than the machines yet still make tasty coffee.

      I feel the same. For me the two makers are - V60 for day to day. And I keep an Aeropress Go which I use when I need coffee concentrate or need to travel.

    We make coffee cubes here to avoid dilution. My iced coffee is a meal replacement mixed with Isopure chocolate protein powder, sea moss gel, and some almond milk. Because I drink it everyday I do use the coffee maker to brew fresh ground beans and the pot of coffee lasts all week.

    Been doing this regularly for years and I agree use a fruity and medium roast is the best, very refreshing. Also the hardest part for me is to have smell free cube of ice, what I mean is that if you like me who only have 1 refrigerator, the chance of the cube having some smell is high and if the smell is too much in will absolutely ruin the coffee 🥲

      have you tried putting a cup of baking soda in the fridge? That helps absorb smells!

      I use food grade plastic to make the ice, with it the ice become clean. Just smash the ice when you want to use it and put it on the cup

    i do a method similar to this with a french press! make the coffee as normal, with water just under boiling, 16:1 ratio. as soon as it’s pressed(i steep for ≈2min), pour over ice. i also find that this really lets the bright notes of light roasts come through!! glad to see i’m not the only one

      Im confused, whats the difference between iced coffee and japanese iced coffee? The regular ice coffe is the same where you put hot coffee with ice?

      @@THEREALKAYO1 Not really because you pouring the ice in a cup so when you do it, your pouring the hot coffee into that cup with ice and that is more so a quick mid drink of iced coffee
      Now
      The Japanese coffee is when you have ice in the picture of a glass and it's melting the ice where it's getting the natural flavor to embrace between hot and cold and letting maximize the flavors
      And finally but not least, Basically
      As regular coffee you don't put ice into it, you leave it as a cup of Joe ☺️☺️☺️☺️☺️✊🏾✊🏾✊🏾✊🏾✊🏾

    Here's the recipe for Japanese Iced Coffee from the video:
    Ingredients:
    - 30g Coffee, ground finely-course
    - 275g of water at 205°F/96°C
    - 250g ice
    Instructions:
    1. Start off with 30 grams of coffee. The whole coffee beans go into the grinder for a fine coarse grind similar to the thickness of kosher salt.
    2. Set some water to heat at 205 degrees Fahrenheit or 96 degrees Celsius.
    3. Into a coffee decanter, add 250 grams of ice made from good quality water.
    4. Prepare the filter by placing it into the dripper and rinsing with water to remove any paper taste. Drain as best as possible and onto the decanter it goes.
    5. Tare your scale and add your 30 grams of coffee grounds. Even them out by shaking the dripper.
    6. Time for the bloom: add twice as much water as you have coffee. In this case, add 60 grams of water then allow it to bloom for 45 seconds which is longer than normal but will yield a crisper flavor.
    7. Finish the brew: slowly add enough water to equal 275 grams of total water. You should be able to finish the brew in under three minutes.
    8. Swirl the coffee around to ensure the temperature of the coffee equalizes with the ice.
    9. To serve, simply pour the coffee into your cup.
    Please note that the video also provides some tips on how to measure the ice and the brewing process. You might find it helpful to watch the video for these details.

    Very interesting. I do a longer ratio, 1:11 coffee to hot water and grind on the fine end of pour over range for mine. Trying to maximize extraction as much as possible before dilution to get as similar an overall extraction to a traditional 1:16 hot pour over as possible. Totally agree it’s great with light roasts. Been loving it with natural processed coffees

    Always good to see a well made Japanese ice drip coffee recipe. I'd add a couple of tips though. A good rule of thumb is to adopt a 1:10 ratio. Usually filter coffee is brewed at a ratio of somewhere between 1:15 and 1:17. So, if you normally brew 20g of coffee to 300g of water, then reduce that to 20g of coffee and 200ml of water. Then use 100g of ice. This preserves the usual 1:15 brew strength as the ice melts. I think it is also important to say that the best coffee for this is either home roasted or bought from a good coffee roaster (not store bought!) hehe. Light roasts are great as mentioned, but for those fruity notes, you want something acidic. So, naturally processed Ethiopian or Kenyan coffees are amazing for this. Colombian natural experimental coffees are also great. Essentially, something high grown and naturally processed (dried in the sun with the skin on). Onyx, Sey, Little Giant etc. will have what you need

    This is really interesting, I normally drink my coffee black plus have a pourover set. So I'll have to give this a try! One of the things I've been doing lately if I want cold coffee is using a drink chiller and brewing into that. Gives the iced coffee taste without dilution, plus definitely less prep than cold brew. Either way, cool to see another coffee lover out there. :)

      Thats one way to do it! The one thing about using a chiller is it takes longer to cool off the coffee. Id be interested to hear any differences you might see!

    Love this! I drink cold brew almost exclusively. I make it in 3 liter batches and brew between 18-20 hours. I start the next batch when there’s roughly a liter left.
    However, once in a blue moon I drop the ball and run out. This will be a nice back up option on those occasions. Also, I used to make close brew ices cubes, but now my wife and I have a little one so I just make it 10% stronger. I kinda want to make some again seeing you do it. Cheers.

    Found this out from Kurasu Kyoto’s method on it and its similar to yours. It was the first time I understood what people explained on flavor notes of light roast beans. Really enjoy finding these kinds of methods

    I tried doing this with a coffee machine! same measurements and everything and it came out pretty good!! great if you’re in a rush, i put the icecubes straight in the coffee pot ;) just skipped the “bloom” i want to buy that fancy water boiler it looks so fun

    I've never seen this video but a couple days ago I literally started doing this without prior knowledge.
    I use c40, a hario 500ml and a hario switch. I also wash out the 02 paper the same way now instead of wasting hot water
    I always make hot black coffee and I never finish it so I started freezing the left overs and started using the coffee cubes to cool down the coffee.

    I can reccomend trying this with some lightroasted varieties that are either natural or even anaerobic natural. Brew on 88-90 degrees but keep the rest of the recipe the same. The funkiness and fermented notes are still there but usually it opens up much more towards the fruity and berry flavours. Totally refreshing and my favorite summer drink.

    I started doing this 20ish + years ago, just playing around. I had no idea I was even Japanese. 😁 BTW, coffee ice cubes aren't just for making iced coffee. They are great in a pu'er tea or for a quick/nice crunch on a hot day. Also, add just a very small pinch of salt if you want to go with something darker than a light roast. You don't taste the salt but it can wipe away any bitterness you don't like.

    I just made this, with a Japanese brand ground coffee that’s more on the dark roast side cause that’s what I could find at the time, and holy crap it was the best tasting ice coffee I’ve ever had in a while! Followed your exact measurements, and it came out perfect. No more spending $4 at Starbucks/day 😊

    I've been looking for a good Japanese Iced Coffee recipe to try for a long time - so glad I came across this one! One q - do you reset your scale back to 0 after bloom before adding 275g of water or is that actually initial 60g from blooming + 215g added?

      Dont reset it! That initial 60ml is part of the overall 275g of water!

    So funny, I always disliked iced coffee, so I started to freeze coffee as coffee- icecubes two years ago - but I didn't know about Japanese iced coffee 😃! I definitely need to try this 😃☕🧊!
    My go-to-coffee-recipie for sunny days at the moment consists of coffee-icecubes, barista almond milk (foamed) and a splash of chocolate soy milk 😊🥤...

    Only had some dark roast but tried this anyway. It's still pretty good, but I find that I need to add sugar to reduce the bitterness to really get that refreshing feel. Will definitely pick up some medium to light roast just for this!

      Yeah, its a night and day difference between dark and light roasts BUT with the dark roast, you catch a glimpse of what it could be like!

    I'm not a huge coffee snob and making cold brew in an Aeropress in like 4 minutes has been working well for me. Just a tip for people that are in a rush and not super picky. Still gonna try this though.

      @@LynneCooney Did a quick google search to find that this type of brewing has been used since the 1800s in Japan. I've traveled around the US and Canada on a few occasions and have never seen this brewing method used in any coffee shop, nor heard anyone speak of it. Perhaps in some other countries, but I've never seen shows or movies from anywhere containing this brewing, except for Japan. It's all over Japanese shows and animations. Perhaps it's commonly used everywhere at this point in time, but that does not change that it originated in and is extremely common in Japan. Tokyo Ghoul would be a good example of a Japanese animation that includes this brewing, taking place at a coffee shop.

    I've been doing the same thing with a vietnamese coffee filter since the beginning of summer and I love it. It's so simple to make and you can even use the Koridashi method though it can be a bit long.

    The only thing I knew about Japanese coffee had been those tall/thin cans in vending machines on the streets of Japan (if you could even call that coffee)…

    Question: if you didn’t have a Chemex or Melita, does French Press coffee work?

      That's a good question! You might have to simply use the measurements, but only let it sit in the press for a minute or two, then pour it out over ice.

    I got some cold brew in my fridge rn. I used a French press, I brewed it the way I do for hot coffee, a little stronger in case I wanna add ice later. I then chill it in the fridge over night. Gonna try this method after I kill that. The fact that I doesn't need to be chilled and it's not watered down, that sounds super convenient.

    Gracias for another video! I do my iced coffee with coffee ice cubes, in summer I usually have lemon ice cubes and coffee ice cubes in the fridge. Also, I add a little pinch of salt to the coffee

    If I may suggest the Baratza Encore grinder be your next purchase. Used that same exact grinder you're using for 5 years. Made the switch to Baratza, it leveled up my grind game by 80%. You can also replace each piece in the Baratza and clean them. The grinds come out way more even. You will be astounded. I will try this method :)

      I was going to bring up a similar point regarding grinder. I researched the Baratza Encore a lot, however I ended up buying a Eureka Mignon Crono with brew burrs and it has been nothing short of amazing. The Eureka is built in Italy and is made of metal and more commercialized parts. Durability is one of its strong suits. It also has stepless grind adjustments which can have a slight learning curve compared to the Encore's stepped adjustments since the settings are much more tunable. Regardless, the Encore would be a huge upgrade from the Cuisinart which I also used to use.

    Looks yummy! Have you ever tried making cold brew in an Aeropress? It can be made in a matter of minutes and it’s quite delicious. 20 g of coffee grounds similar to your Japanese iced coffee, add 4 ounces of room temperature water to the inverted Aeropress and stir for one minute. Then slowly press through the filter into your cup for 30 seconds and you have your cold brew concentrate. You can add 8 ounces plus or minus of hot or cold water to taste.

    That’s my go to coffee method for the last few years. It tastes much better to me than hot brewed. I use French Roast, super dark and ends up tasting caramely to me.

    Thank you for sharing, I tried it this morning which came out perfect. I know what you mean about the light roast because my medium/dark isn’t producing the full potential fruity flavor. They’re more so for the espresso

    Also glad you are back. This seems similar to my Ninja over ice brew. I put ice in my cup, coffee in the filter and it heats and slowly drips through. Most of my ice melts, but it takes a while to run the cycle. Thanks for coming back. Look forward to more of your great work.

      @@BlackTieKitchen Yes the simplicity with everything else going on in life really helps. It makes half a pot of regular faster than 2 cups of over ice, so there is something to their programming. Not sure temps etc off course.

    So I usually make something similar with my aeropress and it gives me the best tasting iced coffee I’ve ever had and I think it might require a little less measuring (especially with the ice part).
    Also because I’m using an aeropress, this only gives you a single cup. I know you can get more than one cup out of an aeropress brew but for iced coffee, I don’t think that’s the case because we’re going to be using less water than normal.
    My ratio is 11-12 g (I’m cool with either but you do you) of grounds to 200 grams of water. If you’re familiar with James Hoffman, you’ll know that this is about the standard ratio for his regular hot aeropress brew. To make it iced coffee, I usually put anywhere from 80-100 grams of ice (usually about a handful for me) into the vessel before I add the hot water, and WITHOUT RESETTING THE SCALE, I add water until I reach 200 or so grams of water total. This way, I can keep my ratio golden without having to measure out how much each ice cube weighs or do arithmetic to calculate how much water I should add.
    If you have a pour-over system, you can do the same for your respective ratio. Just make sure to bloom your grounds like he does in the video before hitting your weight in water.

      I have silicone ones, but theyre for large ice cubes, so it would accomplish the opposite of what I want for this video!

    I was sold on this in the first 3 mins. Ran off, whipped out the pour over and it was delicious! Then I came back and made sure to finish the video. I’ve done coffee cubes with cold brew and moka pot before, but I bet this method is gonna make something really special.

      Ok brewed it, used Colombia dark, it was great! Easy to brew, smooth flavor, brought out the flavor nicely without the harshness that often comes with cold brew. I did 2/3 measurements Btw and it turned out fine

    I saw that Duncan Hines keto brownie box at the end...I like them I add 4 oz of cream cheese whipped into the eggs for super fudgy moist keto brownies! would go well with coffee hmmm!
