as soon as you said it, honest to God, I went for the Subscribe button and then I realized I actually already subscribed recently, but I still haven't took a deep dive into your content. Thanks for the amazing video!
@Blessed by Gaia I'm a bass player also playing guitar. Using a bassist foundation, cool unordinary stuff came out of the guitar, then I noticed myself transferring guitar stuff back to the bass... cross pollenation is cool. I don't use a guitar pick, nor any fingerstyle guit technique. I use Claypool's technique. Try that man.
My mama did use that scale during her time at College of the Arts. Most of the time during third period, classical guitar theory. SERIOUSLY!!! Also, I love your videos your articulate teaching style show us your grace and patience that's one of the great bass players out there today.
And all in one spot, literally, not too much movement, yet FUNKY. I recall Chuck Rainey saying similar; "There's lots of notes under one hand placing". Greetings from Uganda 🇺🇬👊🏿🖤
I was trained by George Ortiz when I was 19. I'm 58 and still using the Dorian mode to create awesome lines. Seeing you for the first time today and you're teaching the Dorian scale just blew my mind. I love it. I'm now a fan of yours and I'm checking out your other videos
I knew that The Funkiest Note in the World was going to be featured when I saw this come up. I like how you tied things together with this one Rich, you're an outstanding instructor.
As a piano player, you know I can't play bass, so this is helpful, so thanks for that. I'll be thinking about this when I'm recording my next song, so thank you.
the natural minor shows up a lot in heavy metal and hard rock, like the song "little sister" by queens of the stone age. I only mention that song because i was learning it earlier today and they utilize this "b6 - 5 - b3" lick as a lead in to the main verse riff. using that minor 6. Love the dorian too, and your tone is amazing. Great video 👍
Digressing; your right hand thumb at the first knuckle from the end allows the end of your thumb to bend back 90 deg. Mine does that on both hands and I often wondered if it made it harder for me to learn guitar. I'm learning bass now and am used to it, I have a long reach due to my height and being in proportion (everywhere 😊) so probably should have started with bass. Loving your instruction, your passion for even the sound of a scale is infectious, and it's like you are with me in my computer room just talking to me. Then you address everyone out there and break the illusion. But, you deserve more people subscribing to your music room. Maybe not enough OMGs or slapping something.
❤❤❤ another super video where your teaching style and philosophy proves itself : " theory should never hinder proformance but rather make it attainable even for the novice as well.🎉🎉
Subscribed, I'm someone who does it all, so I need to up my bass playing. I have to say you've got a beautiful voice as well, I could fall asleep to it.
Everybody loves the root, third, fifth and (minor) seventh. But the true unsung heroes are the second and sixth. Gotta love the tritone stank between the 6th and minor 3rd.
That make me want to learn bass...that stuff is very familiar to me James Brown/ Scofield/RnB/ my local Older church musicians ....its like sunshine....always glad to see it. Louis Johnson.... I only play drums. Musician family
Thanks, just for being alive! I'm building on dorian RIGHT NOW BABY!!! .....AND the magic? I'm a keys guy. Anybody with a good sense of swing at 30% or 60% can play a funky af D, on only the whites!!!! ....but I beg all of you.... dig down into those other keys, they make use of the black keys! ❤
I've been watching You Tube videos for a while mostly on Latin style drumming. This is really something new, Rich Brown gives you an in-depth explanation of these important scales, and I'm a drummer !
Ive been learning bass for a little less than a year, its still really tough but I am excited to continue trying! Your videos help so much, thank you you definitely got me to subscribe!
Funk, blues, and disco are what got me into playing the bass. Those and I also love the moody lines of new wave, goth rock, and post-punk. Unfortunately, I can't read music so am entirely dependent on tabs.
@@richbrownbass Thank you for doing these for us! One quick question, have you ever covered how you're recording all your videos? Your sound is always so clean and smooth and just perfect in my opinion!
@@armignac Thank you so much for saysing so. I haven't covered this only because I'm still not 100% satisfied with the sound of the videos. I'm still learning, and making little improvements with each post. When I'm finally happy with the audio I'll take you through my whole process.
Man you’re a great player with a cool vibe. I had to watch the video over and over to figure out what you were talking about with the 1 3 4 then 1 3 5. Then I saw the text saying you were talking about fingering. There are three numbering systems you are referring to in this video. Fingering, fret position and what I think is the most important the actual note from the scale. I’ve been playing a long time as well and I understood the message but did not understand the numbers you were talking about. I don’t know how a beginner would understand this. I have always thought that funk starts with learning where the flat 7th is. Then that 6th that you’re talking about is a step down from the flat 7th. Works with both Mixolydian (major 3rd) and Dorian (flat 3rd). Awesome sound man.
Not YOUR mama. I meant the song! 😅

but my mama did! 🤣
Funk is where bass really shines.
As a guitarist who also plays bass, and is learning to play bass like a bass, not just a lower register guitar, these videos are great.
I’m fighting the same fight - there’s hope for us with people like Rich sharing such great nuggets!
Like a bass. 🎣
@Blessed by Gaia I'm a bass player also playing guitar. Using a bassist foundation, cool unordinary stuff came out of the guitar, then I noticed myself transferring guitar stuff back to the bass... cross pollenation is cool.

Same!!!
When you understand the theory and science it opens up a whole other world to matching notes and frequencies that resonate.
The funkier, the better. Always love how accessible these concepts can be.
Thank you so much for watching!
Sometimes you just go "oh is that all they're doing"
I've had heaps of those moments learning the bass.
You are not only a great musician, but, you are also a great teacher!! Many thanks !

Oh wow! Thank you so much, Claire. 🙏🏾🙂
Absolutely brilliant teaching. I learnt so much from this - and I've been playing a long while. Always a school day. Thank you so much.
Spot on! As a bass player since the '80s, I have gotten a LOT of mileage out of the Dorian. Also, your phrasing is impeccable.
I knew that The Funkiest Note in the World was going to be featured when I saw this come up. I like how you tied things together with this one Rich, you're an outstanding instructor.
You're not only a great player, but also a GREAT teacher!
This guys explanations are clear and concise even for someone with very poor music theory knowledge such as myself.
How you describe how to play notes with telling us what fret our finger needs to be on is what really clicks in my brain! Thanks for sharing
Bruh I literally just let this play on repeat for like 30 mins 😭🔥 LOCKED!
See, this is why I love the Brown'stone.
This is a great lesson. The 6th is massive. You're touch and tone are great, I'm subscribed just to listen.

I really like how you break it down for everyone, from Seasoned musicians to beginners.
Great video!
As a beginner this makes no sense to me and I dont get what I'm missing
I have held a base in my hand for three practice sessions of 30 minutes and I just learned more than I ever thought I could
Your left hand is smooth like butter.

Great lesson, Rich! Santana uses the Dorian for his solos quite often.
Thanks!

This is very useful and sounds awesome. Thanks.
Even Ya mama!
Great start. 😂
Dorian easiest put is a major scale with b3 and b7 instead. Same as the minor but the 6 is not flat, as you mentioned.
There's some buddha nature in you, Rich, and I appreciate it.
This was one of the most helpful videos ive encontered. thank you
Rich- excellent. Very similar notes to the pentatonic lesson you gave some time back. 135. 35. 135 but love the add of the 7note. Thank you
Impressive. And very cool. Thank you Rich!
Thank you for this lesson in non-zero phonkativity.
Again after so many years of playing I love the things i am. learning here it's the what fors from you Thank You so much!!

Dorian all day - thanks Rich
Funk is located between the 6th and the flat7. Skank is having a minor third
So a 6th bent up a quarter tone?
7:39 Man, that is funky. ( Aahhhhh. I've always been partial to the funk.)
Sir, you have this stuff down COLD. subscribed and ready to learn. Thank you !!!
Awesome awesome demonstration. Mostly guitar player, love hitting major 6th in solos over minor. Time to apply to bass lines now!
Thank you Rich. You’re a great teacher.
You said Prince and i was like hmm. Then you started playing and i heard The Rainbow Children. Your good
2:30 into this and i learned something. Mr. Brown, thank you again. Sincerely.
