Rest in Power, Bernard Wright! He passed away shortly after I had the chance to meet him in Dallas while he was performing on Snarky Puppy's new album. I feel very fortunate to have had the chance to talk to him for a little bit between sets.
3:03 Man that tone is so liquid and beautiful, would fit in great over an acid-jazz/chill fusion, so funky and almost mysterious with those pops, awesome character.
I wholeheartedly agree! I always stop and look up songs on Spotify while watching TH-cam, but then I realized he was providing the playlists for me and was blown away. So appreciated!
Algorithm suggested the 'Through The Wire' breakdown, then I immediately clicked on this. Damn. Where the hell has this channel been all my life?! Props, Brandon. You're a master of your craft.
Jamiroquai - Manifest Destiny. A whole groove centered in the bass that everything else just complements. Percussion & keys can’t help but to fall in line.
Might I add A Taste Of Honey “Boogie Oogie Oogie” is crucial. One of the first basslines I taught myself and it’s instantly recognizable from every purist and most age demographics.
Grateful for your storytelling abilities - keeps me tuning in every-time you put out a video. Recommending a “Jamaican bass-lines”version of this. Can’t go wrong with Dennis Brown’s “Revolution” with Robbie Shakespeare on bass (RIP).
One of my favorites is the bassline from Sesame Street's number song (the one with the pinball video). Great bassline by Bob Cranshaw, and it's always fun when someone asks 'what's that?' to say 'oh, just something from sesame street'.
At 0:46 I subscribed to your channel. First time seeing you, but I have seen enough bass teaching channels to know where this is going and I'm sure I'm going to love this.
Try “Glide” by Pleasure. It one of those special Funk aficionados cuts. Bass gettin’ it though the whole song. By the way, “Getwaway” is that gun blazing cut. No lie.
I’m a guitarist first and always loved listening to Jamiroquai. I loved the bass in their songs, so I bought one, and I now listen to them even more. So much great bass in there! Bassist is Stuart Zender btw
Because I'm such an OLD MoFo...the bass line from the Barney Miller Show. Yeah! Pre cable days! It's a really funky bass line. And great guitar leads. Even if it is ancient history.
You cant mention "All Night Long"/"Rising To The Top" being sampled by so many artists and leave out the best one: "Smooth Operator" by the great Big Daddy Kane. This is the first place I heard that bassline and it was that groove that made me want to make music. That bassline made me think "hey,I wanna do that. " It planted the seed. Just listening to music wasnt going to cut it. I didnt immediately get a bass. I was a kid. I had to buy my bass and amp on my own but managed to do so my freshman year in highschool. Even then I couldnt practice much as my father worked long, late hours and slept during the day.. It would be a few years before I could really put time into it and I was truly humbled when I realised I might not be famous or on tour as quickly as I though🤣
Fuck yeah... Dude I already loved this channel for the music lore, but then you bust out with some bass content... As a bass player myself, this channel is everything I've ever wanted... Keep it up man... ... Oh and another bass line for your list, Mr. George Porter Jr, with...(you guessed it) the Cissy Strut...
Thank you SOOO much for taking the time to inspire here. Such a characterful and tight delivery.. You lickin' those strings too. Digesting all this input - Happy FridaYAY! x
Sir, That Getaway you played made me wanna pull my trumpet out! You say it's difficult but by the way you played it, I sho couldn't tell! It was 🤌🏽 mwah! I'm glad I found your channel. It makes me appreciate the music I love so much more, and makes me want to delve back into playing again
'Glide' by Pleasure is the ultimate KILLER funky bassline. Many have tried to play and have failed. Next is 'Get On The Floor' by Michael Jackson. Also two from Teena Marie, 'I Need Your Loving' and 'Square Biz'.
Man I just like to play riders on the storm whenever I can, dont know if its good for soundchecks but its and awesome easy bass line. Great vid btw, was surprised when I saw this wasn't a multi-million yt channel.
Just watched your keys take on this video format and, as a sound engineer, I have to confess... I've done this same deep cut "show-off" when tuning a PA by ear using reference tracks. I've probably even bumped Anderson .Paak (don't forget the dot!). I usually keep a more standard reference track or three in my pocket, but also sprinkle in favorites of the day... Hiatus Kaiyote, Gary Clark Jr. (Sonny Boy Slim album is phenomenal), Eyrkah Badu, and plenty more. Usually referencing specific elements (clean vox, clean-ish bass, slow or up-tempo, etc.)... but mostly just showing off deep-ish cuts. lol
Love this!!! I gotta throw in my favorite sample of these songs though. "All Night Long" was the foundation of my favorite Big Daddy Kane song "Smooth Operator". Classic!
That To Browne track has the great Sekou Bunch on a jazz bass with a pick playing what we thing is a guitar player doing the ghosting rhythm part. Classic!!!

Funkin for Jamaica is one of the coldest baselines. My mom made me burn this song on so many CDs. I’m from the west coast too so you know I’m stepping in my chucks 🕺🏾
I want to thank you so much for introducing me to the Bernard Wright album Nard! I have been playing in funk bands for 20 years and never heard this album... It is a missing link for me in many ways :-) So awesome!
Dude for EWF's 'Getaway' is like, "Bassline is incredibly hard to play..." You DO know this is Verdine White playing it right? That's literally light work for him.
A few from me that I have used in the past: Fatback Band - (Are you ready) Do The Bus Stop Roy Ayers - Everybody Loves the Sunshine Janelle Monae - Tightrope Vulfpeck - 3 on E Aaron Neville - Hercules Rage Against the Machine - Maria Foghat - Slow Ride (bass solo) Blondie - Rapture Good channel, subscribed :)
That song from Roy Ayers is Gold, but the bassline that I prefer from him is the one from Liquid Love. That bassline is just hypnotic and the change in the hook is an eargasm!
OK, that's the second one of your videos I've watched now, and my oh my this is going to be an epic adventure of binging!!! (I honestly have to admit, that I still don't know how to spell that word) yes, you did it again, just incredible, and as my husband is a bass player I am forwarding this to him right now. I just know he's going to love it too. thank you Kind Sir.

"Funk proper". All the greats are great, but I could listen to your groove and deep pocket for days and days and days...hardcore man. I've subscribed, (and I never sub to shit). 100% bravo bro
If I played slap bass in the soundcheck of most of my gigs, I'd definitely turn some heads. I'd probably get a few angry looks from my bandmates as well! 😂 Killing playing and lines. I love the Verdine and TC/Mac Miller lines in particular!
Donald Byrd's - Wee Tina (2.04) also sampled by the beatnuts "Props over over here" (that mine favorite). Thanks for this video!! greetings from the Netherlands
I loved this video, thank you! But I have to say I like to do the exact opposite of this, especially when playing with someone for the first time. I like to take my bass, plug the cable, and then I start to sound reeeally amateurish, almost like a beginner, just to see them make a face. Wrong notes, odd timing etc. Sometimes even out of tune. And then, when everybody starts playing all together, then I'll let everybody know, just by the way I play, that I was joking. Of course, you have to be prepared and you must have studied the show's setlist. You can only do that If you have a minimum level of confidence and security. Don't know If I'm right or wrong, but it sure is fun to see some expressions of relief, hahaha. This was an excellent video, Brandon. And it certainly has some nice musical tips from some artists I haven't heard about yet. Only now I came across your channel, and I will surely be coming back. Cheers from Porto Alegre, Brazil. Have a nice week!
Funk is the DNA of Hip-Hop
Funk is also the DNA of house
Don't forget to sprinkle a little bit Jamaican sound system culture in there.
Genre evolves over time hip hop has come from years of black music
Blues to Rock n Roll to Rock to Funk to Disco and then Hip-Hop.

Keep up the good work man. Thanks for including the spotify playlists! something that not everyone does and is much appreciated! Keep it funky!

Jamiroquai - Manifest Destiny. A whole groove centered in the bass that everything else just complements. Percussion & keys can’t help but to fall in line.
Jamiroquai has countless songs with just the absolute best basslines! My favorite gotta be ‘too young to die’
Also, I frequently play 5/8 of these bass lines, especially “All Night Long”. The groove is undeniable.
It’s so good!

@@Rahnotrob I remember loving this song because of the bass 🤣
How could you not mention Smooth Operator by Big Daddy Kane 😂
Bass can be so subtle but at the same type, can set the whole tone of a track. I love it.
I always went to play "Sir Duke" by Stevie Wonder as my soundcheck line. Just because I love to play this song.
Try “For Once in My Life” by Stevie Wonder. It’s got the GOAT James Jamerson on bass duty
It has notes all over the neck so it’s definitely a good one to hear the range of the sound system
this is becoming my new favourite channel. i don't even play anything i just love your music knowledge and taste
That bassline you played for Getaway blew me away, just wow. Your videos are worth watching, subbing to this amazing channel.
