Rivian R1T Range Test - Crushed the EPA Rating!!

  • I rented a Rivian R1T for the weekend to do a full review. During the filming, I was planning a simple range test of 50-100 miles and then extrapolate the results to determine estimated real world range.
The problem is that the Rivian R1T was showing extremely efficient numbers after 70 miles. At that time I decided I needed to know for sure what the full range was on this truck, so I charged to 100% and drove until the R1T said 0 miles left.
The Rivian R1T is rated at 314 miles on a full charge. The wheels on this particular truck deduct 21 miles of range, so in reality, this truck should be able to travel 293 miles on a full charge. The thing is, this truck far surpassed that number in my test.
I drove the truck a constant 70 MPH, except for turnarounds, and for the last 10 miles. I had the A/C set to 72 degrees and the outside temp was between 82 and 95 degrees during the test. I also got stuck in a rain storm for about 10 miles of the trip. Finally, I set the R1T to Conserve Mode, lowered the suspension all the way, and set it to firm.
In the end, I was able to deplete the battery all the way down to 0% or 0 miles, and consumed 125 kWh of energy. When arriving at the charger, I was unfortunately greeted by a line of cars waiting to charge, which made me sit there with the A/C on for another 35 minutes, consuming another 1 kWh, for a total of 126 kWh.
I was shocked that the Rivian R1T was able to not only meet the EPA number, but far exceed it. Again, this was with the upgraded wheels that should have hurt range by 21 miles.

Don’t forget, Rivian fudges the speedometer (5-7%) reading fast. Also, same for actual miles traveled. This changes the whole test. They finally admitted this. Claiming this fall they will do software update to correct. Which will crank owners off once they realize, the numbers have been skewed “VW style”.

I like Rivian despite its early productions problems and vehicle gremlins. Deal breaker for me is the closest service station is 110 miles and 2 hour drive away and Mobile service is very limited and long wait times. Also now putting a deposit down does not lock in pricing. Delivery estimates are 2024. Price will probably increase $10k or more by then. Are there a bunch of service centers near you in Florida?

You can't extrapolate short range trips in the Rivian, because the trip meter only uses the rounded kwH number in it's mi/kwh calculation. This discrepancy washes out over longer distances, but really distorts the efficiency number for trips less than 100 mi.

I fear that by the time I can get my R1T the amount of Ioniq 5s and EV6s on the road will make CCS charging an incredible nightmare on road trips. I often drive my Model 3 to VT and when I stop to supercharge I check the CCS chargers I would have to use if I owned the R1T. Often at least half are offline according to their apps and those that are working are in use. I have been driving my Model 3 to VT for over four years now. I had to wait for a supercharger twice. One time I waited eight minutes and the second I waited two minutes. If this keeps going the way I fear I will own a Cybertruck and that makes me a little sad even though I love my Model 3.

Better test might be at 75 mph considering you were getting passed by everyone like you were sitting still. "real world" range is generally at "keep up with traffic" speeds. Plus, with Rivian's speedo being off by 3-4 MPH, you were likely actually only going 66 MPH. Don't know what the speed limit is, but looks like traffic was in the 75 MPH range. Would like to see what it would be at that speed as they would be more representative of how most people will drive. In any case, yes, the Rivian does do quite well on range. I was impressed on mine at how close it came to the range showing on the screen. After years in a Tesla and being used to getting closer to 75% of actual range (versus what the car showed), I actually was able to go further in the Rivian than I did with the Tesla. I was at 77-80 MPH (real speed, not Rivian speedo speed) and got around 255 miles on 20 inch all-terrains. Was very happy with that.

Just to point out, you weren't actually going 70mph, because the Rivian currently overstates the speedo by 5%, so you were actually going 66-67mph. This buffer is getting reduced in the update coming out in the next few days.

But if you can afford 25K extra on top of the price of a Model Y LR than this is a great option.

Also, 61 mph average speed (58 mph real average) is way too slow for a 70 mph test

VW rip off Electrify America, reported over charges per KWH, AND ALWAYS throttles non VW vehicles on their chargers. Notice what the screen said.. That EA was slowing it down. NOT Rivian. There is no heat issue…. Reported they lie about the true charge rates… they have undersized the upstream power delivery where all chargers being used, not enough power to supply at the faux “rated” on each charger. Look at that mess. Under 45kwh charge with battery under 20% charge… pathetic. Now, there are rumors that Ford cut a deal with them to not get as throttled as others. Even so, Reported EA will not provide “rated” charge rates for more than few seconds. Or not at all when charger location chargers are all in use.
Also, more reports that the widely reported massive chargers being broken, half of those have to do with under designed upstream power delivery. So, many times during the day, reported that the “broken” chargers become lawn ornaments during those times.
