    The 2024 Toyota Tacoma has not been selling as well as the 2023, but there are multiple reasons why. We've never seen this much competition in the mid-sized market, and the competitors are good. Will Toyota eventually lose the status of "king of the midsized truck"? 2024 might be the year if so.

It's not like it used to be where they basically died at 60K miles, needed 2 minute warm ups and cool downs, and didn't build boost until 4000 RPM, but they're still a big cost hanging over the head of the owner just waiting to drop. As someone who bought a new Tacoma in 2014, 4 Cyl (NON turbo), manual transmission, single cab, bench seat, crank windows, no power door lock, no power mirrors. The only option was 4WD and I paid $19,995 for it. The new Tacoma is a joke. I don’t care that a V6 isn’t available. I do care that they put turbos on the 4 cyl. I do care that they have a screen for the gauge cluster. I live where it’s really HOT. How will that screen hold up 10 years from now baking in the hot sun? I could understand, hey, we got rid of the complex, technical gauge cluster and slapped a screen in its place to save you money… but where is the savings? I can understand, hey, it was expensive to make manual window cranks where an electric window is simple mass produced money grub so it saves money, where is the savings? Again, I’m not a die hard 6cyl fan BUT I could understand them saying, we’ve eliminated 2 injectors, 2 valves, 2 pistons, and all the other complexities of a 6 cyl and slapped a turbo in to save you money… but where are the savings? I bought a 2018 Tacoma Sport. I love it. It was my first Toyota ever, and I had wanted a Tacoma for a long time. I even have a lift kit and KO2 tires and Gear rims on it. Everything is blacked out. I seldom go anywhere without someone commenting on it. I am now retired so I literally only drive about (embarrassed to even admit this) maybe four thousand or forty five hundred miles a year - IF that - and it only has 36,500 miles on it now. It'll literally last me forever and it'll probably be around even after I'm gone. I did consider getting a new one, but I didn't like the new engine and I also don't like buying the first or even second year of any new type model. As for the other trucks you mentioned, well, obviously we all have our favorites. I have had a Nissan Xterra and it was a good vehicle for me, and I had it ten years with fairly LOW mileage on it (I never put a lot of miles on any of my vehicles) but started having issues with it that even the dealer couldn't figure out, so I traded it in. So, I won't go with Nissan again. As for Chevy - I'd NEVER buy anything GM, and definitely NOT Chevrolet, but again, MY preference based on past experiences. I've had two Ford F150s, but again, I'm not really in need of a big truck like that and frankly, I'm not a fan of the midsized truck they have. Anyhow, I think Toyota will be fine, but their pricing is a bit out of line, and they'll find that out when the reality of them not selling hits their bottom line.

Now it no longer is a good deal. It looks like a fancy boy, and cost premium money too. Yes, it might be utilitarian still. But suddenly every other truck seems like a better deal. I really think Toyota shot themselves on the foot with this. Nothing exemplifies it more to me than those stupid TRD seats. I noticed how they are not bringing them to the 4runner, probably because they got clowned on so much for it. My 2021 was $45,000. 2024 with same specs was over $55,000. My 10,000 mile lease on the 2021 was $1,000 out of pocket, $338/mo. Website was saying $6,000 down, $668/mo. Took it right out of consideration.

It’s great and was easily the best bang for the buck. Impressed with the build quality and the fit and finish.
    Heavily shopped the Colorado too. Great looking truck inside and out. Was fun to drive. Price in the level
    I was looking was comparable (excluding ZR2; was over $60,000). The Z71 and Trail Boss were comparably priced to the Frontier. But they didn’t lease well due to low residuals. Including the ZR2. My 2021 Tacoma residual was $37,000. Z71 was only $28,000 and even ZR2 (we did shop it) was only $33,000 (from $60,000). The Frontier residual was $36,000.
    Frontier was the clear winner. Had no hesitation getting as it was in its own league with all factors taken in to account. Have had it a few months now and happy with the decision.

    I just traded in my 2021 Toyota Tacoma today. The biggest reason was because I bought it due to the “reliability“ and The damn thing broke down with 23,232 miles on it. Sure it was fixed to warranty, but it sure left me bitter.

    • @jonathanfields4ever
      @jonathanfields4ever หลายเดือนก่อน +5

      @DB-pb7ckNah. There are a bunch of reliability issues coming down the pike for Toyota. Their quality is slipping. The tundra had like 23 recalls in three years.

    • @absolutetuber
      @absolutetuber หลายเดือนก่อน +3

      @DB-pb7ck I like that you had to add the qualifier of “likely” right before “great truck” 😂
      The service manager even told me that they have been seeing the particular problem in that engine but usually it isn’t seen until 60k miles. So not only did the truck break down, but it’s a known problem. Now I see why the qualifier “likely” is needed.

      @DB-pb7ck I’m not sure what you’re getting at. I’m not in here fan-boying on another brand. I’m just some dude that bought a Tacoma based on its purported reliability and after only 23k miles it broke down and left me high and dry. I couldn’t even drive it to the dealer. I had to put it on a trailer and haul it in. I simply don’t want anything to do with Toyotas anymore, nothing more nothing less. And why the comment on my financial situation? You know absolutely nothing about me, my finances, or even what I traded it in for.

    The higher pricing, combined with ridiculous dealer markups, has not only made me not want to buy a Toyota, it's starting to make me despise the brand itself. They play way the 'reliability' angle to take advantage of people's pocket books and now the reliability isn't even there.

    Toyota was king when the competition was mediocre but the land scape has changed. The GM twins are beautiful capable trucks, the Frontier is old school and reliable and the Ford Ranger is new and fresh with the option of a 2.7 turbo V6. The huge price difference between the Tacoma and all its competitors and the fact that the Tacoma is the only truck out of the midsize field built in Mexico will shrink its sales. Personally if I was going to buy a midsize truck today I would buy a Ranger 2.7 V6 or a GMC canyon AT4. Sad thing is I am a Toyota fan but I'm not really thrilled with the direction Toyota has taken.
