My single most traumatic talent show experience:
One girl performed slam poetry about the death of her parents and her brother. No one in the audience knew if they should clap or not. Fifteen years later and I still think about that.

    • @Antifearn
      @Antifearn ปีที่แล้ว +496

About five years ago in my high school honor’s English class one of my classmates got up and told a serious slam poem (I forgot the subject matter, but I think there were guns involved). When the poem ended and the classroom started cheering, the girl ran out of the classroom crying. Five silent seconds passed, and our teacher said “That poem was very shitty. Who wants to drag [name] back inside?”.

Who would have thought that everyone met a slam poetry girl once?
I had a poetry night in middle school. The girl entered not for a recollection of a true story (thankfully), but to flex her creative writing.
I entered because I thought it would be funny to sumbit a poem about a guy who slipped on a banana peel. She confronted me after the show to mock it.
Needless to say, I don't think she got the joke.

I once sat at a talent show, where a kid dressed up like bob Ross, but with no hair. Like traditional bob Ross he brought a paint pallette and a easel, with his canvas. He proceeded to yell “what’s up losers, my name is rob boss.” Then took the paint palette and smashed it into the canvas, and started rubbing it around. After he took it off the painting looked like something you would see in a drug trip. He gave us a minute to look at the painting, before saying “now let’s beat the devil out of it” and punched the canvas, knocking over the easel, and then he just beat the crap out of it. Best fucking talent I’d ever seen.

    immediately followed by
    “so I lied to ITV”
is adding more weight to the whole Matt Rose is a really weird demigod theory (alongside the reading of the longest number in the world).

I tried to audition for musicals and always failed, despite giving it all I possibly had without even letting an inch of hesitation or embarrassment stop me.
but that’s when I realized that the director just chooses favorites. I was far from said favorite, clearly, and even people who i could never even hear on stage, couldn’t act, and mostly just sat there looking pretty, always got leading roles.
do you think I should just try my luck at a different theatre?

@@Pixelat1on Oh, 100%. Theatre is hard work, and you will have to work at it, but there’s nothing you can do about crappy directors. You just have to keep looking - the good directors, who are out there, I promise, will cast you if you can show them you’ll kill that role. Keep confidence and do your best and you’ll find something eventually. I can’t promise you that you’ll find a leading role right away - I’ve been in the ensemble for years of musicals. But I love being in shows even if I don’t get the spotlight, and the directors I’m under now seem impressed with the development I’ve made from last year. I can’t say for sure that I’ll get a big role in the next show even with that, but I want to try, and perseverance is half the battle. If theatre is something you really love, don’t give up on it (: You never know what might happen if you stick with it

funny thing is when i'm presented with a situation like that I act just like Matt
Recently I was is a play with my co-op [I'm homeschooled] and I had totally forgotten to memorize my lines until the last practice, a week before the performance
The play was centered around the Christmas story [because my co-op is Catholic] and I was supposed to be an angel in a group that was supposed to be arguing about how to tell the humans that Jesus was to be born.
I was supposed to be the lead angel, so my lines basically instigated everyone else's.
Now I hadn't memorized my lines all the way, like i mentioned before. So I'm on stage in front of all the parishioners of the church we're performing at, stumbling my way through my lines, hoping I'm speaking loud enough, since we weren't able to get microphones.
And I screwed up the dialogue, of course I did. I said a line that was supposed to reply to something someone said that THEY HADN'T SAID YET, and start a new line of conversation.
My friends stared blankly at me for a second, then I realized what I'd done. First thought, oh f*ck. Second thought, get pissed at them.
I loudly sighed and backtrack, improvising a little to make it seem like I'm mad that they're clueless, then get back on track. Guess what? My screw up got more laughs than the stupid script our group leader had written up.

For some reason at my old Christian (important later) school, they put the most talented duo at the beginning of the talent show, and nothing lived up to their performance. That was until the next to last act where one of the band players walked up onto the stage with the band's drum set. He sat down and sighed dramatically, paused, and played the pornhub intro. The entire chapel of 1000+ people erupted instantly into laughs, cheers, and clapping. Obviously none of the teachers said anything but I could tell that at least one of them knew what the tune was based on his reaction. It was awesome.

I tried to finish out with one last cool leap, but I just ended up doing a weird jump with both legs bent. In third grade, me and two other friends performed a song that was popular in our country, about kisses. When we were presenting, I noticed that everyone in our audience (other third graders and teachers) looked pretty bored. I wanted to fix that, so when the song got to the part where it says “the mommy kisses the baby right on his butt” I brought my hand up and SLAPPED my friend’s butt the hardest I could. She let out a scream and everyone started laughing. She and our other friend liked it, so we continued doing silly things while singing. - a dance routine by two girls that was nicknamed "the battle of the ponytails" because of how much hair flipping was involved
    - a kid going out on stage with an easel and literally just drawing, sadly their talent was not drawing really fast so at some point they got pushed off to the side while others kept performing. I don't even remember getting to see the finished work

Not a talent show per se, but I took a creative writing class in college, and we had sessions where people would get up and share what they wrote. This one time a guy got up and delivered a beautiful, rambling epic poem from memory. It was one of those things where everybody was talking about it afterwards.
I talked to him later and expressed amazement that was able to memorize that whole thing.
And I swear to God this idiot goes, "Oh, I was just making it up as I went along."
I aspire to that level of not giving a fuck.

I managed to perform the cringiest performances at my elementary school talent show for two years in a row. You see, up until sixth grade, I was 100% certain I was going to be a nurse when I grew up, so I took that and made it my entire personality for a few years. In third grade, I decided to do a first aid demonstration for the end-of-year talent show, so I enlisted the help of a couple friends (who were definitely questioning all their life decisions while agreeing to this) and proceeded to do a 6-minute first aid demonstration on stage. My friends had to pretend to sprain their ankles, get ghastly cuts, and break their legs, while I ran around and mumbled incoherent instructions as I wrapped their limbs in bandages and towels after rummaging through a duffel bag to try to find those towels. It was... interesting.
The next year, I wanted to jump on the bandwagon and sing a song. All the girls I knew were going to sing for the talent show, and, not wanting to be the odd one out, I signed up to sing as well. However, while all the other singing acts were presenting songs the audience knew and loved, I decided to be qUiRkY and choose something a bit more... niche. And by that, I mean the Philippine Red Cross anthem. I memorized the lyrics from an old video probably made with Windows Movie Maker on TH-cam and, on the day of the talent show, I grabbed a mic, got that video projected onto the screen behind me, and sang as loud as I could (mind you, I'm kind of tone deaf and cannot sing on-key to save my life) and practically belted out the whole thing as everyone in the audience just got progressively more and more confused. They all clapped politely at the end, but I could tell the applause was not as enthusiastic as it was for the other kids.
If anyone from my elementary school happens to come across this, I just want to say I'm very sorry for potentially scarring you and don't worry, I've matured. I think.

COVER THEM UP!" and threw my coat over them like I was covering up a dead body. Then there was the time I held a choking vest by the tube on the front...

I used to never, EVER do talent shows due to social anxiety. But I always wanted to- I just didn’t really have any onstage talent I could showcase. In junior year I decided “fuck it, this my last chance” and dragged one of my friends into learning the words to Ex-wives from six the musical with one day to prepare. We came up with choreo and really awful costumes in like five hours and did the whole thing that night, it went so badly (I would just to emphasize the fact that not only were our costumes literally just sweatshirts, there were only two of us performing three parts each, there was only one mic, and I cannot sing). It was the best damn day of my life, we had to keep taking turns changing into the different costumes backstage while the other person tried to keep a straight face, and that worked until my friend started laughing so hard she couldn’t even talk anymore and I had to yell her part from backstage while struggling to put on a blue shirt. It could very easily have been the worst social disaster of my entire school career but we just went with the chaos and people got really into it. During intermission a bunch of people came up to us and told us we killed it and that was hilarious. Obviously we didn’t win, but it’s still one of my favorite memories. The key is confidence! Just have fun with it and everything’s going to be fine. Why live with regrets?

I thought I had just the right amount of confidence, but then kids at my school were being pretty mean spirited about it. They made fun of almost everyone in the show that were posting their acts to their social medias. I silently dropped out, but no one knew I was even in it to begin with. I don't think I could've ever lived with the shame and I feel bad for everyone that was in it. I just wanted to have fun, but they killed it for me.

So I looked up Matt's performance on Britain's got Talent (because I was curious)
    And I must honestly say:
That even tho he failed, he took it like an absolute champ
The videos he does today are incredibly well done
And he's seriously a great comedian
    Another thing I noticed was
The way the judges were blatantly being insulting like middle schoolers, trying to get a reaction out of Matt was more cringe than anything he could've done
A lot of arrogance and lack of professionalism behind that judge table
    But then again
That's what talent shows are really
Rich successful people making fun of normal people (or not normal)
And due to many of these shows being scripted
Some people enter not knowing that the sole reason they got in
Was to make fun of them
    But aaaanyways

I went this family summer camp for the visually impaired (my brother is legally blind), and there was a mandatory group talent show. I had a friend who was younger than me and to be in a group with her I had to join the younger kids group. I was planning on just going along with whatever they chose to do but being the oldest I guess they all assumed I would take the lead. The group counsellor and I ended up writing a parody of the intro song from Phineas and Ferb, and the counsellor came up with the genius idea to write the lyrics on a piece of paper so that the kids who couldn’t memorize them could read off of it. What we forgot to keep in mind was that THE KIDS WERE FUCKING BLIND AND OBVIOUSLY COULDNT READ. We go up to preform and I’m the only one who knows the lyrics but my 13 year old self is too embarrassed to sing on my own. We all just kinda stood there in silence. One kid started crying. The worst part is the announcer guy hyped us up a bunch first, and a guy even volunteered to play ukulele for us as we sang. It’s all on video too, just silence, ukulele, and a poor little blind kid crying.

So my dad was my elementary school music teacher, and was the main person in charge of the talent showcase. My 4th grade year, there were two little girls who were singing "Dark Horse" by Katy Perry. When they auditioned, he told them they were in, if they cut the rap, which was too inappropriate for an elementary school talent showcase. The night of the talent show came, and the girls still sang the rap, causing my dad to get in trouble.
The next year, it seemed like every little girl who auditioned was singing "Let It Go" from Frozen. None of them wanted to change their acts, none of them wanted to blend acts. With the fiasco the year before, my dad didn't want to push changing songs too much, since the kids were singing appropriate songs and he didn't want a repeat of last year. So, in my 5th grade talent showcase, we had about 12 occurrences of "Let It Go". To this day, hearing that stupid piano intro makes me want to scream.

I did some jokes for my high school talent show with my best friend at the time. Told some meh ones and told ones that had the crowd laughing hard. In fact one of the judges laughed so hard that she fell out of her seat which just made everyone roar even more. We had the most energetic reaction out of the entire crowd and I could even hear my mom laughing from the back which was rare because she’s so used to my jokes that they don’t phase her all that much.
We didn’t even place third. I guess joke writing wasn’t considered as good as making props like the musical numbers did.

      @deusdamnit ปีที่แล้ว +17

@@starling1226 It's easier with crowds, actually. The trick isn't so much making people laugh, but leaving room for people to laugh without feeling silly. In a crowd, the hardest part about making someone laugh is making sure that they're not laughing alone. If there's only one or two people in the crowd that are laughing, everyone will feel awkward... but, if you leave space open for everyone to laugh, you can tell bad jokes and get big reactions.
It's why sitcoms play laugh tracks, too. The laughter coming from the show is what actually prompts the feeling to laugh, rather than the show itself. The idea is that you don't want to stand out, so you react by laughing... it makes something that's not particularly funny into something worth a chuckle or two. All you need to do as a comedian is hit the right vibe in your delivery; it's really not even about the jokes you tell.

i was literally just reminiscing about my talent show experience today... i was 13, and my summer camp had a program where each cabin had to do a performance in front of the entire camp. most people either did some kind of skit or danced to a song, so we decided on dancing to ice ice baby, but we had a problem: i had a knee injury. so, what i had to do was get a basketball rack onto the stage, stand in the background, and awkwardly act like i was djing while my cabinmates performed. a clip of me wearing sunglasses and a backwards cap, standing there depressed made it into our official session recap video, which was also played in front of the entire camp. i believe it's on their website. it keeps me up at night.

I preformed the 1st violin part of a piece I'd been playing in orchestra, there were two bars of rest before the end. EVERY SINGLE PERSON IN THE AUDIENCE started clapping during the rests. I *very loud and determinedly* finished the last measure of the music, bowed and walked off stage.
I still remember what the piece was...
For context I think I was in 4th grade, and I'd been playing violin for about a year.
Even my old conductors would tell the audience to not clap before they put down their conducting stick, turn around and bow. PEOPLE STILL FRICKING CLAP!
I know this seems nitpicky. But it's kinda like telling a joke to who ever you're talking to and they start laughing before the punch line. They don't hear the end, you don't finish your joke.

One time when I was in Egypt on vacation I made friends with a girl my age (maybe 6/7 at the time?) and we randomly decided to get on stage in the hotel restaurant full of people and perform a tap dancing routine. I remember genuinely thinking that we were insanely good at it, despite having no idea how to actually tap dance properly (we just moved our feet kinda fast with no coordination, very impressive stuff). There wasn't even a talent show or anything, I don't even know if we were allowed on the stage, but when we started dancing we were so amazed with our abilities, or I guess raw tap dancing talent, that we just had to share that incredible performance with everyone. For some unknown reason people weren't that impressed, but it was still really fun. I never saw that girl again after our vacation, I hope she's doing well these days.

At my high school, there was something akin to a talent show, the only real difference was that the performers were mostly theater kids. For the finale of the show I was in, these two people did an act called "Clown Seminar." When they were finished with the main lessons, all the other performers (including me) came onstage and started to wildly dance. For the final part of the act, the drama teacher came onstage to stop the bit of chaos happening, we agreed to mess with her a bit, started walking up to her West Side Story style, and ended with the teacher getting pied in the face.

A year 7 lad came on and did an Undertale skit. one girl tried singing naughty from Matilda, completely off time and she didn’t even know the words. a year 8 girl sung two songs, one from Frozen 2 and the other was This Girl Is On Fire. This other year 7 came up and sang Shotgun by shaun mendez.
but there were some diamonds in the rough. one of my friends absolutely shredded on the violin, another played Je Te Lasserai Des Mots knowing full well his crush was in the audience, this other girl went MAD on her electric guitar and someone sang Billie Eillish pretty well.

Couple of days later the teacher told us "she had practiced non stop and mastered it" so we let her do it. She started with "it was an is big world but we were think we bigger" followed by some awkward humming and her starting the chorous while half of the verse was still missing. All while playback music was on. Seeing how she was near breaking down we shut down lights and sound immediately, pretending to have technical difficulties to allow her to get off stage. It was thankfully followed jy an amazing dance performance so that trainwreck was forgotten. This was 4 years ago. Girl should be 16 now. Probably still wakes up in a cold sweat now and then.

This video makes me feel better about the time I forgot what day the talent show was on.
For some background, this talent show had auditions in a private room with the judges who were year 7s while I was year 6 I think. A few were then picked to go in stage. No teachers involved, no parents present to. I got through the audition by singing 'All I ever wanted' by Basshunter (anyone who used flip note hatenna on the DS knows why) where I proceeded to get laughed at because of the line "and I want to have you in my bed" my 9 year old ass did not understand why they were laughing but hey, it was good enough to get through.
Now the day of the finals came and I did not know it was that day so I was not prepared at all.
I had promised my sister I'd do a specific song (don't know why really) that I did not know the lyrics of at all because it was some obscure song she liked that was also from a flipnote. I then proceeded to have a panic attack at lunch before the show while trying to piece together what the lyrics might be along with a few friends that had no idea what song I was on about.
Went on stage in front of my entire primary school. No background music. Just me and a crumpled piece of paper with my shitty handwriting. I started. I begun to panic then froze up. Don't even remember getting off the stage I think my brain literally turned off from the shock of it all.
Just remember standing in the crowd after with tears just down my face.
Didn't sing in front of people again for years and still have trauma from it to this day 😔✌️
It's been 10 years since then
Might be doing a karaoke thing with some friends soon so hope that goes well and that the alcohol I consume beforehand will balance out the weight of my anxiety guhh

For what it’s worth, nobody ever does karaoke with the expectation of sounding like Ariana Grande. Depending on the place you’re singing at, sometimes being awful at singing can be part of the fun.
Humans have been making art, music and other such things for thousands of years. Doing stuff like singing is just a thing humans *do*, regardless of whether they’re good or not, a bit like how birds chirp and build nests as just like…a thing birds do. The way I see it, singing at a karaoke bar is just a way of indulging in a normal, human habit without the weird social judgment of whether or not you’re “good” at it.
Lord knows I’m not a big fan of Country music but that hasn’t stopped others from enjoying it. “Good” is subjective, singing is a habit as old as a cave painting, and karaoke bars basically never have the pressure to sing well. I love going to them precisely because I can’t sing well and I still love doing the act of singing despite this.

Once, at my school, when I was like...six years old, there was this talent show that was thrown together in like... ten minutes by the teachers, and we had to prepare something to perform in front of them. We were given like... twenty or so minutes to prepare something (yes, not even a day, the teachers just threw this together to keep us entertained), so six year old me decided it's time to ... write a song.
I literally speedran writing lyrics for an original song, I was finished in like... five minutes, coming up with the melody as I went along. And even though the melody is not documented anywhere, I still remember it. For some reason. And it's bad.
    Anyways, i performed the song.
Just... imagine a six year old child with a voice sounding like a mouse that's high on cocaine, singing a sloppily made song about being alone in the forest in front of a bunch of teachers, and a couple other six year olds watching, everything embarrassingly silent except for the sound of my voice.
    Obviously, I didn't win.
Also, i took it all really, REALLY seriously, despite the songwriting speedrun at the beginning.
And, I really wish I remembered more of the lyrics other than the chorus, so that I could fully revisit the painful memories of this thing

i relate to this one on a personal level. when i was in third grade my friend convinced me to perform in the talent show with him. we wrote an original song with a message about how "nobody is perfect". the lyrics, unsurprisingly, were absolutely horrendous. i remember the chorus, and maybe some other lyrics, and the whole experience was probably the most embarrassing thing i've ever done. it was just the two of us in a large auditorium singing a horrible song to literally no music in front of half the school. needless to say, we were made fun of for almost a month after.

In a school play, I played a parody version of Elvis and even had a solo (full blown cover of blue-suede shoes if I remember correctly). I fully copied his voice and everything, which got a lot of laughs from the audience because normally I'm very deep and monotone with my voice. I can't even remember what the play itself was about. We had another kid play a parody version of Colonel Sanders in the same play who spent a majority of the play just making chicken puns. I wasn't embarrassed by my corny Elvis impression, but that whole play was a major fever dream. I think it was Christmas themed of all things, but I honestly can't say for sure.
Also, when my school played a Disney medley on the handbells, we did little skits before each song, except for my section where I was Darth Vader and had to do my skit in the middle of the song. I was playing my handbells in my costume and had to walk up on stage to battle the kid who was playing Luke Skywalker with our plastic light sabers halfway through our cover of the imperial march. What's worse was that my cape blew into the other kids' sheet music as they kept playing, causing some of their papers to blow away and have to play from memory. It turned out pretty well in the end, but it's something funny that I like to think of every now and again.

During COVID our schools talent show was all videos we sent in digitally. I thought at first to do something requiring a shred of talent, but realized that they couldn't really say no to whatever I submitted (as long as it's within school guidelines). This led to me filming myself in a swivel chair wearing whatever weird ass outfit I could throw together day of (Guy Fawkes mask and leftover Christmas cracker crown) spinning around in circles to the tune of *popcorn.* The real kicker is that they played it as the credits music to the show.

This was at a CYF youth getaway at a college campus during the summer. The last day held the talent show. I always *hated* the idea of performing in front of a crowd, but that night I finally got scraped together the confidence. I requested to perform a Three Days Grace song that I knew by heart. Knowing the song or not, extreme stage anxiety helps nobody. Not to mention I requested the performance during the show, and I wasn't told until AFTER they announced me that I was the *LAST PERFORMANCE.* So, I'm up there, telling people how bad I'm about to sound, and a damn good thing I did.
The song starts, I immediately begin singing off-key and am extremely startled by the fact that one's voice sounds different to others: I could have ignored this except for the LOUD speakers on either side of the stage. I stutter, go silent, get encouragement from the audience, try to sing before signaling to the operator to kill the music. I then apologize to the audience and walk offstage back to the dorm before anyone else even starts to leave. This was luckily a very supportive group, but I hope they've forgotten, otherwise I don't ever want to see them again.

I practiced them for WEEKS after that, while she fooled around every practice session. SHE DECIDED TO DO IT ALONE WHEN I COULDN'T COME FOR ONE TRYOUT. I'm still bitter, all that practice for nothing. Later down the line I was just a creepy 14 yr old teenager with a massive crush on her, who pushed for her to go out with me way too many times, to the point where she no longer spoke to me and the school basically put a restraining order on me. For context, she was straight.
There's not a single day I don't regret that, cuz she was like the only person in that whole school who understood my interests. But I was very stupid as a kid. I'm currently 20, that memory still makes me want to die.
