      @@RinoaL does internal resistance matter? when building a pack from many different cells... say from 10 different laptop batteries: is it enough to arrange cells as to have similar total capacity? What about adding some fans with a termostatic switch starting them at a warning temperature?

      well i'm glad i could help! i might be doing this yet again soon. every time i build a new ebike battery i update my methods of making it and of filming it. i'm trying to cram more and more into a shorter video. :D

    Isn't better if you just add another 18650 to that cell pack where is needed? So that you have similar amps? In your battery pack one battery is for example 1700mah and next one is 2400mah. Isn't true that first battery with smaller capacity is going to overcharge and bigger one is going to be 80%full? Why just don't add more cells in that pack that has smaller capacity like in your first video? What is better?

    Does it matter to the order of batteries capacity? What I mean is we have batteries with different capacity and trying to put it together do we put it from: Low to High, High to Low, or High at each end and Low in middle!

    Thanks a lot! I am currently gathering cells (have a tester on the way) to make a 6S pack to power a 24v truck inverter (lithium isn't really well suited for 12v inverters designed for lead acid) which will in turn power up a DIY SLS 3D scanner. I hope everything goes well, but this will definetely play a major role into the pack design. I thought that as long as the parallel group capacity was equal, it was fine, but i'll use this method to not end up with mixed 10P and 11P groups, for example (not that i know if that'd be bad though).     Is there any issue with mixing chemistries? I bought all my laptop batteries from the same source but I ended up with what I think is ICR and INR. The types are JNICR18650, +FP 18650, and INR18650HE.

    if in the near future you may put together an 18650 pack meant for a solar system and showing how to hook it up with a charge controller & inverter i would appreciate i have seen very few solar systems running on 18650 packs on youtube and those that are there don't really give detailed explanations

      Absolom Madhaka TBH i dont think stationary solar power systems are a good use of 18650s. especially when lead acid batteries are so cheep at junkyards. i think its best to put 18650s into mobile machines for now.

      Absolom Madhaka I actually use lithium ion cells in a solar system, they are far superior to lead acid that are very inefficient and have to be constant trickle charged, unlike lithium ion and the losses are much less for the latter. According to Battery University 18650 Cells are ideal for solar power systems as the Intermittent charging is less likely to stress the cells, but with lead acid batteries it takes a lot of constant charging to get the chemical reactions going, and this is not very efficient especially in some area's like here in the UK when we hardly get many days of sunshine SEE batteryuniversity.com/learn/article/charging_lithium_ion_batteries just below SUMMARY Quote "Charging can be intermittent and the battery never needs to reach
      saturation, as is the case with lead acid. This is a major advantage for
      renewable energy storage such as a solar panel and wind turbine."

    I have over 600 harvested and tested cells. charged and shelved for a 18 months or more and rechecked. removed any under 75% now the sorting... any suggestions for packs.? want to do 24 0r 48 volt system on my sailboat.

    I've been trying to get this question answered for ages thanks so much, I can't beleive I missed your video as Isaw some of your earlier videos ages ago when I first got my E Bike about 8 months ago and am building my first battery, I'm just getting to the end of capacity testing and just needed to know how to arrange my cells in mah.

    Good job on the work. Could you please help me with the calculation of the capacity. I heard that if the lower capacity is mixed with a higher capacity in a pack the total capacity of the pack is actually the capacity of the lowest cells in the pack. how true is this ? i also have some cells from a laptop and your video was really helpful when it comes to mixing the batteries with different capacities.

    I put all the capacities in excel, sorted them by capacity. Then calculated the average of the top number of cells needed. Finally multiplied by number of parallel cells and rounded down. Then i sorted them to come to the calculated average.

    Just throwing an idea out there but next time you find yourself rearranging cells it might be useful to use a computer program to arrange the cells so that the chunks of 8 deviate from the mean value*8 by as little as possible. Just seems like manually re-arranging the cells was very time consuming given the simple goal of grouping the chunks equally.

    Great video! My kid has a 36v 500w mini dirt bike, I just took the battery apart to see if i could upgrade it and found lots of spare battery slots. Would you be able to help me with the configuration if i sent you some pictures? It has a 3 x 12v 8ah lithium 18650 pack batteries (40 in total). I would ideally like to add an extra 12v and maybe a few extra collective AHs. I have 18 extra used 18650 to add, various voltages from 2.2v to 4.1v. Thanks

      Any cells below 3.2 standing are most probably damaged. I really would do a charge cycle on them first to see if they are foobar or not before building a pack with em.

    Hey great video. Could you tell me how you tested the capacity of each cell, was it just the charge capacity or did you use a discharge method and if so what was your discharge current and the cut off voltage. I've got loads of lipos to test and want to make sure I do it correct. Thanks for any help and keep up the great work.

      kanecool2000 i first charged them to atleast 4.17v and then discharged them at 500ma discharge on my Imax B6 until they hit 3.0v. keep in mind it should stop once it hits 3v not lower the discharge to keep it there.
      my current imax B6 is a ripoff of course, but they didnt do a very good job at ripping off the imax b6. for some reason when the cell hits 3.0v it doesnt end the discharge it just lowers the discharge current to keep the cell at 3.0v. and after a while its pulling 0.0 amps and counting up. so it just then slowly counts up to infinity. so i used the Ni-Cad discharge setting instead. the cell should bounce back up to 3.6v after the discharge test is over.

    PS: I use Repackr to group the cells in Parallel.

    iv been watching and learning but Im wondering what is the problem with using the laptop batteries intaked? i know its different but wouldn't it be easier for charging and can it be done or at least tried .have you tried it?.i have 8 new Dell 9 cell batteries .i need 36v .im not sure how to try it out.i have the right charger -discharger and components to build like you showed but i thought this couldn't hurt to ask first

    how exactly did you meassure these capacity numbers? discharge test, I guess, but at what current draw and down to what voltage?

      One can reasonably assume the discharge was at 1A, from 4.2V, to 3.0/2.8V. There would be a negligible difference between 3V and 2.8V SOD. I have just recently bought 30 "broken" laptop batteries, disassembled them and tested each cell in an Opus BT-C3100 charger, so 4 cells at a time. The default discharge rate on the charger is 500ma, but I always test at 1A, just like vast majority of people on YT. Capacity is given in mA during a "Discharge Test", which charges to full, then discharges to 0 and charges to full again, at least in this particular charger. Hope that helps.

      Crazy Frank i went to Weirdstuff Warehouse and bought 30 or so for 3$ each, and next ima go to a local recycling center and buy about 50 packs for cheeper.
      but before i moved to silicon valley i bought them off ebay for about 12$ per 12-cell pack.

      @@RinoaL That's the whole health of the cell. if 2 cells have 2000mah of capacity but ones .15 ohms of resistance and anothers .500 ohms it'll discharge the cell much faster on create dead cells.

    so looks like you are having a difference in the same module(parallel) on lower capacity cell with the higher capacity cell of 500mAH this is ok

      For goodness sake, don't parallel up any batteries that are not the exact same or very close to the same voltage. There's only bad that will come from that on any level.Same voltage in parallel but capacity is combined. It's why you parallel up packs to get the capacity you need and then series those packs to raise the voltage. They must be the same voltage though, not various different ones.

      Enginehead99 can't answer for his setup specifically, but: unlike gas engines, the "throttle" doesn't as significantly effect battery life with electric motors, rather it is primarily dependent on the load.
      when you give a motor full power with little load, it uses little power, but uses considerably more power when moving a load (even at a low duty-cycle, AKA, "throttle"). when the motor reaches a certain speed, its internal reluctance will limit it from going much faster, however its power use will drop to a level just sufficient to maintain that speed (the load on the motor will drop significantly at this point).
      most of the power use then will be during acceleration, with slow acceleration using less power over more time, and rapid acceleration using more power over less time, and this should roughly even out (with some variation due to efficiency curves in the motors and similar, but these are much more uniform than with gas-powered engines).
      the main variables that are likely to vary with speed, and thus effect efficiency, are things like mechanical (bearings, road surface, ...) and wind resistance (drag). typically, wind resistance is the bigger factor, as it is positively correlated with movement speed (IOW: it increases load at higher speeds).
      in this case, travel speed is likely to be a bigger factor than how much power is being fed to the motor, but then again, these things don't usually go fast enough for wind speed to be a huge factor I wouldn't think.
      so, assuming all this, one would expect a "similar" total distance with only a minor impact due to speed.

      every cell ever manufactured has different mah, just they may be rated the same. but whats on the label doesnt reflect whats really inside the cell. so its all a question of how much deviation is an issue. and for this, this pack has taken me 4,000 miles without really much issue. had one cell die on me that id found at 0.2v so now i limit to cells that have never gone bellow 1v. but its still my main battery.

      ive never tested it. if a cell gets too hot while charging or discharging, i count it as bad

    why not add one of your discarded batteries as the 9th cell paralell to the weakest pack in the first place? your overall battery capacity would be slightly higher ??

      because i'd like its shape to be uniform and i need to learn to get used to using whatever capacity this configuration gives. if i added one cell i'd add a 2nd, and a 3rd, until i'd added a whole other road of cells and then on from there. i need to know when to stop and so i stop at when i have the numbers of cells i planned. lol

      HW1099 18650s are LiPos, LiPo and lithium ion are the same chemistry just they tend to be used to denote differant form factors.
      this stems from "lithium polymar" being a media buzzword in the 1990s much like "graphine" or "quantum" is today. so it was only a matter of time until a company branded their Lithium ion cells as "lithium Polymar" to profit off that media hype.

    A device called sm 8124a is getting good reviews. If you get chance check it out!
    I see a lot about Voltage and capacity but from what i can see discharge speed and charge speed is hardly mentioned. I just wondered if you ever work out IR when making packs?

    lol you just wasted yours and everyone else time... you should match both voltage value and capacity value as close as possible...a 14,000 and 17000mah will cycle longer than trying to match 2 x 16,000mah batteries...very bad advice and best way to create premature failure

    Yeah. Nice job. But i think this isn't a good solution to organise battery pack. I also have e-bike and I also build a DIY battery from old laptop batteries. I must say: your videos inspired me to make DIY battery (especially video when you tested your new battery and you estimated it for +100 miles).
    Ok, I built battery with is 12p7s (29,4V), and I group them in the following way:
    1. 21956 mAh 78,106 Wh
    2. 21954 mAh 78,905 Wh
    3. 21982 mAh 78,832 Wh
    4. 21954 mAh 78,66 Wh
    5. 21959 mAh 78,587 Wh
    6. 21950 mAh 78,654 Wh
    7. 21958 mAh 78,444 Wh
    unfortunately the first segment (with have the lowest energy in Wh) after full discharge whole battery, has a voltage of 2V (the other segments has about 3 - 3,3V). It seems to me that by combining batteries with the highest and the lowest capacity.

    Hey, what BMS did you use for your 48v pack? im trying to figure out how to charge my pack, i have a 48v ebike motor on its way and i want to charge/balance the pack correctly, i still have no bought a tester like an imax b6 yet because i was hoping there would be one that could balance all 13 strings once i solder them together..

    Hi there. I’m really newbie on this one but I want to build a 36v 10s5p battery for my e roller. I collect some battery’s from 1400-2100 mah gonna give me about 1600 if I organize like you. My scooter has a 250w Motor a Controller says 17 A . How can I calculate how Much current will pull from one cell ?
    If 250 w / 36v = 7A what’s that 7A ?

      yeah your math seems right, however testing it with a current meter is best. just try to make sure you have 2Ah for every amp you plan to pull, and your battery should take you pretty far.

      Rinoa Super-Genius lets say 7A. If 5 battery in parallel an 10s . Would it pull 7A / 10 ? How much would it pull from one row ( parallel ) ? I have no clue :)
