  • This time I'll show you, how to increase lithium battery capacity or repair dead battery by changing 18650 cells inside battery pack.
    I used LG HG2 18650 cells with 3000mAh of capacity. Got them from gearbest.com. Here are links, if want to get them too:

    Just a note for everyone: do NOT poke around with anything metal the way the author does in this video UNLESS you are ABSOLUTELY sure that the cells are dead at 0 Volt. These cells can put out serious current in normal use and are absolutely good at welding a metal tool stuck when still good (even when low in voltage).
    Also, you really might want to invest in some cardboard insulating rings for the positive terminal side of the cells. It's VERY easy to melt through the heat shrinkwrap around the cell and when that happens you've got a very hard to stop short circuit on your hands. And trust me: even spotwelding heats up a piece of nickel strip good enough to compromise the insulation (nope, it did not result in a short, but I had to insulate the location afterwards to prevent it from ever going short).

    Make a note of where the positive connection is made on the old cells.It's just as easy to assemble the pack with all the cells reversed and destroy them all when charging (and possibly the power tool)

    Does the bms care if you replace the batteries at a higher amp rating?

    • @weeardguy
      @weeardguy 4 หลายเดือนก่อน

      My experience is that most tool-batteries do have some BMS in them but most do not keep track of the cells' age and capacity: the currents (especially stall-currents) are so high that it takes a considerable FET (or multiples of 'em) to handle that current, which is why there aren't many that keep track of all the parameters lower-current BMS tend to hold in flash memory.
      So no, it most likely will work fine. If the BMS is the more sophisticated kind, it can either trigger faults or give you completely false runtime indications, as it won't know any better than that the capacity is still original. If it's even more sophisticated, it will also put the cells' age in memory. Just swapping the cells than won't work and runtimes will be affected by the memorised age. If you know how to communicate with such BMS's, one can trigger a learning cycle again, so the gauge will find out about it's new cells. Capacity however is a flash-memory setting that really needs to be altered by computer-interface. But as said, I have yet to come across such a sophisticated tool-battery (they probably are out there already, I just haven't seen them yet)

    the bosch cisco batterys dont have a protecion. They only have a balancing circuit inside. The drill stops the discharging. I distroyed one by using my ts100 with it.

    I believe the reason they are low capacity is because they deliver high current, changing to high capacity might cause them to overheat and cause fire....or worse explosion.

    • @weeardguy
      @weeardguy 4 หลายเดือนก่อน

      No, it's the internal resistance and accompanying maximum discharge current that causes the heat. Low-capacity cells are usually good at supplying high discharge currents (10 times Inom is not an exception, ever more cells surpass that value) as their internal resistance is really low.
      That's why quite a lot of those videos on TH-cam with people replacing old NiCd or NiMh toolbatteries with lithium cells from scavenged laptop batteries are just rubbish as those cells are not meant to deliver high currents, but instead are high-capacity low-discharge cells, with a rather high internal resistance. Most likely those cells will be dead quickly after a few cycles as they just aren't up to the job of supplying more than 2 to 3 times Inom and heat up a lot of if you do discharge them beyond the maximum specified discharge current.

    • @kyleberberich9660
      @kyleberberich9660 4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Protected if possible but not necessary since there’s a bms. The “protected” cells just have individual fuses built in, which likely won’t be used because if the draw is so high the bms wont draw the high wattage from the cell

    So the protection circuit for the batteries is inside the tools???

    • @mibars
      @mibars 6 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Some older power tools batteries operate without protection circuits and get away with that by using more robust smaller capacity cells. Inserting delicate high performance cells like in the video is not recommended...

      18650’s should be a staple for cordless devices!
      If someone would design a user assembled battery supply kits that would fit different cordless devices it would be a awesome product. Sure everyone wouldn’t use them but there is enough frugal folks in the world to sell them. But design them to insert and change the batteries. 18650 are a solid design that is available almost everywhere.

    There's a lot more to batteries than their charge capacity. Power tools come with high power Li-ion cells, which make the trade-off of lower capacity. They can deliver more energy in a shorter time to match the needs of the tool. Swapping for higher capacity cells means you are probably no longer be using high power cells. This will have unintended consequences such as decreasing the torque of your drill.

    • @Oink_Blaster
      @Oink_Blaster 7 ปีที่แล้ว +15

      Stan Lee I see you're one of those who believe that companies release the best thing they can. Do consider that companies don't care about the consumers desires as much as how cheap can they build a tool that will suffice your needs. Samsung's 15Qs are rated for a continuous discharge at 18A. While the LG HG2s are rated for 20A. If anything, his new cells will last even longer as they won't get heat wear with double the capacity. There's more to a Well Done Tips video.

    • @kevinmills5293
      @kevinmills5293 7 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Vamp Arion I've fitted a set of the LG cells to an 18v dewalt drill and they are no where near as good as a genuine lithium ion pack. They get very hot when the drill is under heavy load and I've measured the current at over 40A! I don't know what cells dewalt use but they must be better than the LG cells.

    • @Oink_Blaster
      @Oink_Blaster 7 ปีที่แล้ว +5

      Kevin Mills DeWalt uses Panasonic-Sanyo UR18650WX continuous discharge rated at 20A each cell. LG's HG2's are rated exactly the same. Not all LG's, or 18650 in fact, are made for continuous discharge. The HG2's are. If the replacement isn't matched or enhanced, that's repairers error. It's not just, "Hey, these batteries fit in here. They must work." DeWalt or any other brand will not put the best cells, for the consumer, on the market for their battery packs. Plus, installation could have not been done right in your situation. Who knows?

    • @kevinmills5293
      @kevinmills5293 7 ปีที่แล้ว

      Vamp Arion not sure what you mean by the installation may not have been done right but what I've done is taken an old 18v dewalt NimH pack and fitted 5 hg2 cells along with a battery manager with under voltage, over voltage and overload protection. I've not made any provision for heat dissipation and when I measured the current under load at over 40A, I was surprised as I don't know of any 18650 cells which is rated at 40A peak or otherwise. Other than making a 5S 2P pack, I'd be interested hear what cells you would recommend.

    • @Oink_Blaster
      @Oink_Blaster 7 ปีที่แล้ว +4

      Kevin Mills I can tell you that only 5 cells won't cut it. in a series connection, your increasing voltage and not current. They're running on 40A discharge, but they're rated at 20A continuous discharge. They'll have to be 5S 2P for them to be 40A continuous discharge. Doubling the capacity also! That's the problem of upgrading to a different chemistry battery. The video was about upgrading 18650 cells with other 18650. I misunderstood when you said 18v pack as 20v packs are technically 18v packs (due to their nominal voltage being closer to 18v). But yeah, you're squeezing double the current rating on that pack. Hope I helped.

    It is very very strange to have all cells die at the same time. In my experience there will be one cell dead in a pack and the others will typically be able to be revived either by charging them with a good cell for a few minutes until the cell reaches a minimum voltage (say 2.5 to 3V) for the charger to recognize it as good and then use a proper charger to top it off.

    I answered and said, "If I have found favor in thy sight, O Lord, show this also to thy servant: whether after death, as soon as every one of us yields up his soul, we shall be kept in rest until those times come when thou wilt renew the creation, or whether we shall be tormented at once?" 76 He answered me and said, "I will show you that also, but do not be associated with those who have shown scorn, nor number yourself among those who are tormented. 77 For you have a treasure of works laid up with the Most High; but it will not be shown to you until the last times.
    78 Now, concerning death, the teaching is: When the decisive decree has gone forth from the Most High that a man shall die, as the spirit leaves the body to return again to him who gave it, first of all it adores the glory of the Most High. 79 And if it is one of those who have shown scorn and have not kept the way of the Most High, and who have despised his law, and who have hated those who fear the Most High -- 80 such spirits shall not enter into habitations, but shall immediately wander about in torments, ever grieving and sad, in seven ways.
    81 The first way, because they have scorned the law of the Most High. 82 The second way, because they cannot now make a good repentance that they may live. 83 The third way, they shall see the reward laid up for those who have trusted the covenants of the Most High. 84 The fourth way, they shall consider the torment laid up for themselves in the last days. 85 The fifth way, they shall see how the habitations of the others are guarded by angels in profound quiet. 86 The sixth way, they shall see how some of them will pass over into torments. 87 The seventh way, which is worse than all the ways that have been mentioned, because they shall utterly waste away in confusion and be consumed with shame, and shall wither with fear at seeing the glory of the Most High before whom they sinned while they were alive, and before whom they are to be judged in the last times.
    88 "Now this is the order of those who have kept the ways of the Most High, when they shall be separated from their mortal body. 89 During the time that they lived in it, they laboriously served the Most High, and withstood danger every hour, that they might keep the law of the Lawgiver perfectly. 90 Therefore this is the teaching concerning them: 91 First of all, they shall see with great joy the glory of him who receives them, for they shall have rest in seven orders.
    92 The first order, because they have striven with great effort to overcome the evil thought which was formed with them, that it might not lead them astray from life into death. 93 The second order, because they see the perplexity in which the souls of the unrighteous wander, and the punishment that awaits them. 94 The third order, they see the witness which he who formed them bears concerning them, that while they were alive they kept the law which was given them in trust. 95 The fourth order, they understand the rest which they now enjoy, being gathered into their chambers and guarded by angels in profound quiet, and the glory which awaits them in the last days. 96 The fifth order, they rejoice that they have now escaped what is corruptible, and shall inherit what is to come;
    and besides they see the straits and toil from which they have been delivered, and the spacious liberty which they are to receive and enjoy in immortality. 97 The sixth order, when it is shown to them how their face is to shine like the sun, and how they are to be made like the light of the stars, being incorruptible from then on. 98 The seventh order, which is greater than all that have been mentioned, because they shall rejoice with boldness, and shall be confident without confusion, and shall be glad without fear, for they hasten to behold the face of him whom they served in life and from whom they are to receive their reward when glorified.
    99 This is the order of the souls of the righteous, as henceforth is announced; and the aforesaid are the ways of torment which those who would not give heed shall suffer hereafter." 100 I answered and said, "Will time therefore be given to the souls, after they have been separated from the bodies, to see what you have described to me?" 101 He said to me, "They shall have freedom for seven days, so that during these seven days they may see the things of which you have been told, and afterwards they shall be gathered in their habitations."
    102 I answered and said, "If I have found favor in thy sight, show further to me, thy servant, whether on the day of judgment the righteous will be able to intercede for the unrighteous or to entreat the Most High for them, 103 fathers for sons or sons for parents, brothers for brothers, relatives for their kinsmen, or friends for those who are most dear." 104 He answered me and said, "Since you have found favor in my sight, I will show you this also. The day of judgment is decisive and displays to all the seal of truth. Just as now a father does not send his son, or a son his father, or a master his servant, or a friend his dearest friend, to be ill or sleep or eat or be healed in his stead, 105 so no one shall ever pray for another on that day, neither shall any one lay a burden on another; for then every one shall bear his own righteousness and unrighteousness." .....2 Esdras 7:75

    Dude you should have used a super capacitor as a mini spot welder, so cheap and effective. Look it up here and thank me later

    Problem at 0:55 (yes I watched the rest) Those cells you are replacing are rated at a higher nominal vs peak discharge current than those replacements. If you use the replacements as tool batteries in a high discharge situation, they will die a quick(er) death. Not all lithium cells are equivalent and even though the newest, most expensive 18650 cells available have higher discharge rates than their predecessors, they won't match the lifetime performance of high rate of discharge cells engineered for the task.

    • @cekpi7
      @cekpi7 8 ปีที่แล้ว

      That is true, original cells had 1450mAh @ 10A discharge, LG h2 has 3000mAh @ 600mA discharge but i couldnt find anything about how much capacity it has if you discharge it at 10A, or how it affects battery life

    • @robbo580
      @robbo580 8 ปีที่แล้ว

      Cekpi7 those new cells are not designed to survive this kind of output and will probably have a short life and catch fire you would probably want to have at least two or three p with those

    • @cekpi7
      @cekpi7 8 ปีที่แล้ว

      Robert Oxman They are tested @ 20A, they can survive that with no problem (they wont catch on fire) but i didnt find anything about their life span or capacity drop

    • @robbo580
      @robbo580 8 ปีที่แล้ว

      Cekpi7 wait so the the power drill pulls less than 20 amps?

    • @cekpi7
      @cekpi7 8 ปีที่แล้ว

      Robert Oxman Original cells were max discharge 15A, so if you replace them with 20A it should be fine, i measured once on my drill and it didnt pull more then 10A under load, which is almost 150W, i dont believe it will draw more then 100w continously

    • @Deemon1

      Дмитрий Староверов with powerful iron and short soldering time, not a problem. Long time overheating can damage 18650, but not 1-2 seconds

    • @dominicdymond
      @dominicdymond 8 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Дмитрий Староверов there are some tests i have seen on this subject the results always say the soldering heat doesn't effect the inner parts of the cell. if you think about it they spot weld them as well, the heat from a spot welder is high as well

    • @Lightning666
      @Lightning666 8 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      But spot weld is MORE shorter then soldering with iron

    • @radellaf
      @radellaf 8 ปีที่แล้ว

      There are techniques that make it less bad, but still, yeah, I'd take the pack and cells to a shop that had a spot welder (Batteries Plus around here) and see if they'd do them. Or buy tabbed cells to start with.

    All power tool companies make higher cap battery packs but they add more low MAH cells,; there's a reason. Without getting into white paper territory, it has to do with torque, continuous amps, and most importantly HEAT!
    This may be negligible for home use but PLEASE don't take one of these franken-batteries to the jobsite. Just buy a 3-5 AH battery.
    Oh and don't leave your "chardeger" unattended the first time you put these in.

    Your accent is hard to tolerate. You could have mentioned the exact content/brand of solder you use. I personally have found some brands of cells will not accept solder even after grinding with diamond Burr with Dremel also using a 200 watt gun
