I’d be interested in seeing some videos in a “But Faster” series. Show us how to make quick meals at home faster than you could by driving out to a restaurant, ordering, and returning.
I’m 50 years old so I remember when Burger King opened up in St.Louis MO. The Whopper burger was a bit smaller than a dinner plate and each burger was flame grilled to order, there was actual smoke in the air because they fully cooked the fresh meat over open fire grills that you could see. They fixed It exactly how you liked it so it was absolutely delicious and put other burger chains to shame. Now the whopper is the same as any other burger out there, the same thing happened to McDonald’s food. Back in the day it was actually tasty food.
BK in the UK was like that too back in the day, now it is the same awful crap shown in this video. They used to actually flame grill the burgers now they are flame grill flavour, just terrible.
@@BurnerTurner To remember a world before Net 2.0 but after the near-total commodification of everything is... a mood. The 90's really were a bizarre twilight decade that bridged two separate worlds.
The nodule things you saw on one side of the burger is from the cooking. It's cooked on a flame "char broiler" conveyor belt thing. I used to be a supervisor at A&W. Believe me, we did everything we physically could to try and make the food decent... but during Covid, upper management made massive price cuts. I'm talking labour percentage of 11-14% and our manager getting written up and screamed at on the phone if it went higher. Any restaurant owner worth their salt will tell you that this is COMPLETELY INSANE. Everyone quit in April, starting with our manager, and including myself, because we were being pushed to work unpaid overtime just in order to keep things up to standard. I was a supervisor and I didn't want anyone getting food poisoning, so I was going in unpaid after hours (in exchange for food that my manager slipped me) trying to clean the place up because having one cook and one cashier on a Friday night means that nobody has time to clean. And my manager came in, unpaid, on CHRISTMAS DAY to clean because that was the only day of the year where there weren't any customers. One day my manager finally went rogue and authorized for a bunch of us to stay late and get paid to deep clean the place (because the HEALTH BOARD told her to), and head office screamed at her over the phone. I heard it. She told them that she needed more labour to get the place up to health board standards, and they punished her for it by cutting our hours even more. After that we all coordinated finding other jobs, and one by one, all quit over the course of a month. If you ever go to an A&W during rush hour and you only see two people working, or if the line is around the building... go somewhere else. If you must go there, try to keep your focus on the popular, standard items that sell quickly, and you'll be more likely to get it fresh. And please... go easy on those kids. They're trying their best out there. I know this video was about BK and not A&W but... I just had to get that out there.

@@Everything4Tech Something I forgot to mention was that this is A&W Canada - other countries are entirely separate legal entities. With any luck, if you're in a different country, you MIGHT be okay. When you go to a place, scope out how many people are working and how clean it is. If it looks filthy in there, ESPECIALLY if there's only one cook and only one cashier (or if the cashier is alone and running into the back to help the cook), it's a red flag.

The high school I went to was right behind a Burger King, when the weather was warm and we had the windows open, all you could smell was the burgers cooking. You don’t know how hungry by lunch time we all were. Burger King was always packed during week days. Even now when I drive past it during the week, you always know what time the school is out for lunch.
Mine was across the street from a Burger King! And a Tim Hortons, a Chinese restaurant, and a grocery store. Then they tore down my high school and put a Walmart in it's place. 😔
There’s no comparison, any homemade anything will beat any fast food item! You made the buns, Mayo, pickles and grind your own beef, seasoned all the ingredients, fast food doesn’t even salt theirs. Even if you did not take the extra steps and made the burger with store bought items (buns, Mayo, pickles and ground beef) it would have been 100%better.
@@googlesucks925 The way he grossed out on it? You could be right. Or he hasn't had one for a long time, because he made them himself. If you cook on that level, all fast food smells and tastes like garbage, because you know it can be better. Bit of a home cook myself, so i'm getting where he's coming from. Yes. Create a gourmet burger to compete with fast food. Of COURSE the carefully constructed version would beat out the fast food version. But I will say THANK you for the instructions to make a gourmet burger at home. Will definitely use when I can. 💗
Yeah, I thought that was very weird. Also, inflation must be hitting Houston hard for two double whoppers be be over $15 and that's with no fries or drinks.
If you don’t wanna make your own buns, I’d definitely recommend aldi’s 4 pack of brioche buns. Easily the best store bought buns I’ve ever gotten and it’s not even close
Just made this for my birthday! We made everything just like you said (except for the buns). Lots of prep, but it was a family effort 😀. Easily the best burgers I have EVER had, let alone made by myself (and I've eaten A LOT of burgers!). Hi from Australia and thankyou for your videos!
Just for reference, BK doesn't use mayo, they use whopper sauce which is a mayo-based spread. Not far off, but it does taste a lot better than standard mayo. It has stuff like Cayenne, Pickle Juice, etc.
When I was younger I hated "mayonnaise" until someone put mayonnaise on my burger accidentally and I said "this isn't mayo" that was when I found out that what my parents called "mayonnaise" was actually "miracle whip", I have liked mayonnaise ever since, nor have I forgiven my parents for their lie all those years, lol :)
I had a similar experience growing up. Hated Miracle Whip so much I refused to even try mayo since I assumed it would be the same. When I finally did it blew my mind. Loved it ever since.
@@danielbateman6518 When I was young, it was much cheaper than mayo - Think Butter vs Margarine. It was sweet and tangy, and absolutely awful, but people were saving money, I guess. So Bring Out the Best Foods, and Throw Out the Kraft!
Not impressed that you wasted food that way, so disrespectful. You slammed it into the bin, as bad as you may think it tastes there are people out there that are hungry. Get off your high horse.
I worked at BK for 3 1/2 years and I will say that if the whopper meat is fresh off the broiler and the add ons are adjusted to your liking, the Whopper can be a decent choice. I will also say that I absolutely hated working there and had many break downs in the walk in freezer while doing inventory. I can only dream of trying this recipe for myself but I am positive that you de-crowned the King
Same here in Ireland, the one in this video looks grim xD what kind of shit fastfood quality you guys have over there in US? xD all their fastfood burgers looks like they got sat on by the employee's, gross.
pricewise, I bet this is cheaper off raw ingredients, I wouldn't be shocked if those raw ingredients where 1/4 what a whopper costs. Thing's the time, this guy's got a whole off screen cooking habit, you brush your teeth before bed, he's like time to start the dough proofing.
Whopper, Whopper, Whopper, Whopper, Junior, Double, Triple Whopper, flame-grilled taste with perfect toppers, I rule this day! Lettuce, mayo, pickle, ketchup, it's okay if I don't want that, Impossible or Bacon Whopper, any Whopper my way! You rule, you're seizin’ the day, at BK, have it your way. You Rule!
5:25 That's salivary amylase, specifically. Amylase is largely produced by the pancreas, and when the pancreas is injured, some of that amylase will go into the blood. Amylase levels in your plasma/serum can be tested and is useful in assisting in the diagnosis of pancreatitis (but outdated thanks to lipase being a better and more indicative test). :)
The reason amylase is outdated as an indicator for pancreatitis is that it is not specific to the pancreas, as lipase is. Amylase is released by the salivary glands to start the conversion of long, more complex sugar chains into shorter chains that we taste as sweetness. Because pancreatitis is treated mostly with empiric pain medication, people could pretend to have pancreatitis by rubbing the angle of jaw and... abracadabra, elevated amylase -> treat with morphine.
Your attention to detail truly brought that Burger King's Whopper to life; the ring molds sculpted the buns into flawless rounds, while the homemade pickles exuded a delightful tanginess. Your mastery of mayonnaise added a perfect touch, and the spicy ketchup was simply outstanding. The unique way you sliced the vegetables showcased your creativity and skill, making the entire dish a harmonious culinary masterpiece. Thanks for sharing!
I was 3/4 through a law degree before I decided to quit it all and pursue a career as a chef. Since making that decision at the beginning of this year the quality of my life has improved so much. All credit to you Josh for inspiring me over the last few years. I just ordered your cookbook and I am so so excited. Please come visit New Zealand!!!!
I love this series, but I am not sure if this has been brought up before, but it would be interesting to see if Josh is doing this while also utilizing the same profit margin as the name brand. It doesn't surprise me that he is able to make every item with better quality, but what if you had to produce the item for the same profit margin that Mcdonalds, Burger King, etc had to?
This format shows how to make the products better. He's not competing in making the margin they make, he's comparing the products. They claim that their products are good and because we hype them so much, Josh shows us how to do them better. You are basically asking him to change the video format
@@YAH995 It'd presumably be a new series with this format rather than changing the "But Better" series to match it. It'd be pretty cool to see what he could pull off with only a small budget.
I want to see you do these “But Better” videos in other countries, because by the looks of it, here in Australia, our Wopper’s at Hungry Jack’s (it’s not call Burger King here for legal issues or something idk) are pretty decent, and the Ultimate Double Wopper; though a bit pricy, is huge and is really good.

Maybe not the best presentation, but still BK is my fave fast food when it comes to burgers below 10€. At least in Spain, their lettuce and tomatoes actually taste what they suppose to taste, not like MC lmao. Anyway, this whopper at home looks amazing and easy enough to try and make my own ~

Amylase is also an enzyme you can use in beer making! If you add it to the mash (your grain and hot water steep step) then you’ll be able to extract more sugar from the grain starches. There is an enzyme called amyloglucosidase that you can add in the mash^ and also while fermenting because it can also convert complex sugars into simple ones that the yeast can utilize. Cool to see more food science on the channel!
Oh wow, a homemade burger made by a gourmet chef turned out to be better than a mass produced burger made in a fast food joint. I'm shocked, I tell you, shocked!
Hey, that Burger King in particular is a god send. During the Houston freeze last winter I waited 2 1/2 hours in the drive-thru to get a couple whopper meals because they were the only place open in a 5 mile radius of my house. Best meal I’ve had in my entire life.
As a homebrewer, kind of cool seeing beer brewing products/manufacturers low key being advertised, intentional or not 🤷♂️ Love the vids. Homebrewer and cooking enthusiast and always talk to friends about the overlap between the two. Nice to see it in you videos
Joshua's first day at Burger King: "Okay, Josh, order in, timer started, you have 1,5 minutes to sent that order out else they will yell for the manager and ruin the store!" Josh: "B..b.b.bbut I just took out the flour of the cabinet, how do you expect to make a proper burger what looks nice and taste premium under that time??" "Do you think we love to work here, Josh, DO YOU?" just my imagination scenario XD Anyway I love the video, just wanted to point this out :) Also is there any fastfood burger what you like or "good enough"?
Yeah, it's WAY easy to beat a fast food burger when you spend half the day making buns, dill pickles, sauces from scratch. The entire point of fast food is FAST.
I was a manager at BK back in the 90s. The whopper has undergone some changes since then(at least in my area), and not for the better. They no longer steam the buns which makes them hard and dry. They no longer use shredded lettuce so when you take a bite the whole leaf slides out. The meat now has like an artificial charcoal lighter fluid flavoring added to it(gross, I know). And for whatever reason whenever I happen to get one I always get the tomato butts. When I was running my store I threw the tops and bottoms out. I know it's fast food but I tried my best to at least make it palatable.
Man. I gotta give you props for your cooking skills. Made literally everything from scratch..... But at this point this video should be named how to spend $40 bucks and 3 hours to make a burger. Of course yours tastes better man. You compared what could be considered a gourmet burger to frozen mass produced food. Looks damn good though.
Exactly, TH-cam keeps showing me these in recommendations. Is good content and knowledgeable. But is basically taking a 14 year old kid and putting them against a 20 year martial arts vet in a fight. It is an easy win and easy content. I love burger king, reminds me of moments with my mom as a kid. Same with how enjoying a sausage mc griddle reminds me of saturday mornings with my dad. Its not the quailty its the memories that keep me coming back. Thankfully I am very big on eating at home so definitely dont eat fast food for 90% of your weekly food in take if you can avoid it.
Feel like you are entirely missing the point of the video. He takes a popular fast food item and makes it better. Hes not saying "this is how Burger King burgers should be" hes saying "I'm gonna make something like a Burger King burger but better and show you how to do it" hes challenging himself to make fast food better - not telling Burger King how it should be done.
I like the wide burger king size - its a lot more balanced in flavor and ingredients and easier to bite into than a 4 inch high narrower burger. I do like your channel and many of your 100s of recipes are great.
when making mayo i highly recommend using kerrygold butter or animal fat in place of vegetable oil*. (makes for a healthier tastier mayo) *if you have seen how vegetable oil is processed, you wouldn't want the rancid & scent removed oil in your body
@@KiltedBlackDragon that's what I meant by "whole butter." 🙂 I've been using ghee or clarified butter instead of oil whenever possible but I've never made mayonnaise before. I just might try a small batch now. Thank you!
Problem is that the cost of your’s is far more I guess than the cost of a Burger King, would be good to see you try something with a comparable budget, the cost of the actual item to make rather than the retail price. Otherwise as always, your food and cooking is top level. Thank you for your content.
Buy some cheap ground beef with medium fat (hell, even 90/10 would be fine), some cheap buns, a red plastic tomato from walmart, and make 3-4 better burgers by cooking the meat until it's to your liking, putting it on the bread, and then putting some sliced tomato on it. It takes nothing to make a better burger than Burger King for cheaper per-burger.
No don't be ashamed of yourself. Something that Josh doesn't yet get is that you cannot make a but better of fastfood meals. People don't order fastfood nessecarily for the taste but for the simplicty.
@@CarlosHuiskens idk if I wanna pay 15$ for "simplicity", 15$ is a fkton of money in my currency, and I would opt for taste if I'm gonna be paying that much. If there's anything we can all agree on about what Josh said, Burger King is _not_ the king of burgers. Overpriced, sloppy, not even tasty. Some of them tasted like nothing. My local burger chain delivers food that tastes better than theirs. Its cheap, fast and delicious to top it off. Even those sImPliStiC burgers taste way better than the Burger King counterparts. So yes, there can _absolutely_ be better food for fastfood meals. If you're paying and have a choice, you never have to compromise quality. Even in fastfood. This "simplicity" bs is an excuse.
I made this as I'm a fan of BK but hardly ever eat them and fancied a 'treat'. I didnt make the bun and I didn't charcoal grill my burger or make my own mayo ( Hellmans ) also used pickled gherkins from a jar. The result was a super juicy and flavoursome burger and no question your burger beats BK, even mine was definitely much tastier. It didnt take long to make from start to finish maybe 20 minutes and not much mess to clean up. It is worth the effort to follow your full recipe if you have time to do it and my burger cost about £3 for the ingredients as I used a 1/2 lb of beef. Thanks for your help. I will be making this again and will try some of your other recipes. You clearly know how to cook and your videos are snappy.
Amazing recipe! I made this and was really yummy! Even my partner liked it a lot who normally doesn't eat burger, he's learning 😀 I made the buns without the enzyme and with my normal instant yeast and worked great for me. I also put salt on the tomatoes, so can we now watch Batman together?
So I worked at bk up until yesterday and a few things, 1. The pickles they have are super garlicky and amazing and I haven’t been able to find any that match them. 2. We got the buns from a supplier in the next town over every day so they were fresh. 3. I think kewpie maybe (Japanese Mayo) would be good. 4 will you make an a better impossible/vegetarian whopper or burger. 💜
The thing i hate about it when people say "but better" is that it just isn't better, it's completely different and tastes nothing like the original food
@@CarpetHater if he really wanted to make a but better he would find an actual fast food meal he likes(which he doesn’t) and enhance the good parts and elevate them

Josh you have my deepest respect as a TH-cam chef. You definitely are talented and have skill I wish I had. But, I am sure you are aware, fast food and restaurants are different, one is built for convenience and one is built for quality. What you are making is gourmet fast food. This is stuff they serve at restaurants. Please don't hate on fasts food so much that it is disgusting to the common people. They are not bad in their own scale. Thanks for the vids
That's why it is called "but better" not "but like the original". The goal literally is to make a better version of the original regardless of time and cost. For that there is the "but cheaper" segment. And to be fair no matter how you look (timewise, quality wise or price) at it, the original really looks bad and super processed (the patty alone). It is what it is and all the power to those who want exactly that but it is bad.
@@mrteeeeeeee I understand that. But I would just appreciate if he showed a bit more respect for these establishments as they are instead of always pointing out how bad they are.
That whopper deserved to be dissed for not even looking like the ones in BB’s ads. That’s the least we should get. Mr. T is correct - Josh isn’t saying BK’s whoppers should be like his. This series is about his improvements on the popular foods, regardless of the source, though it’s often fast food, take out =, and chain restaurants He even finds ways to copy the popular features of the contenders, like the soft texture of the buns in this case. My inner sloth insists there’s no way we’re going through the trouble of obtaining two specialized ingredients to make hamburger buns, BUT I really like soft bread, especially on my burgers. Bother.
@@Obsidian_Iris_yeah to be fair I think LilDinoBoi was referring to the establishment and Josh bitching about waiting times and service. Basically the things he said in the beginning of the video. Which can be a fair point. Depending on how you look at it. Not for me though. I don't know how it generally fares in the us but in Berlin i get a very decent freshly made burger for the same price in a restaurant and it also takes like 20 minutes from ordering to being on the table. All in all it's maybe just Josh complaining because that's what he does and also it is good entertainment. Sure he should be respectful to the people working there which I think he is but towards the company itself? No fucking way. It's a ruthless company serving super bad food for high prices and misleading advertising. Nothing to like about it at all.
he never realizes or states that the food he’s comparing to his own version is FAST FOOD and made to be quick and fast, he’s spending time and quality to make a better version but he calls his better which it obviously will be

I went to Burger King in Germany once and they had this king selection menu with Kings mustard & smoked cheese double. Literally the best burger I’ve ever eaten at a fast food chain. If you told me that this burger was made in a burger restaurant, i would believe it
A lot of chain restaurants are better in Europe. Went to a Subway in Germany near my hotel and it was just... stellar. On par with the best mom'n'pop subs in my home area in Massachusetts. Not gonna say better, but definitely whoops U.S. Subways and other chains. I suspect the restrictions on many additives and preservatives in Germany/other European countries helps improve the overall taste, also many ingredients often have less distance to travel from the farm to the restaurants.
One of the best burgers I've tasted was a signature mcdonalds mexican burger in mexico, it was basically a better quarter pounder without ketchup and with pico de gallo, guac and pepperjack cheese, it was incredibly good for a fast food restaurant.

He probably knows that bro, but the fun of his videos is to see something that we can eat world wide being transformed in a more heatlhy and tasty meal. I'm from Brazil and I can relate to his content, because he is dealing with something that we can eat here
also COST
if Burger King started selling those burgers they would be $100 at which point no one would buy them
@@mac2857 how? What special ingredients did he use that are soo hard to get a hold of? Make everything at the beginning of the day, keep it in cold but not frozen condition... People order, you fry up the burgers and you assemble it the same as always... :/ There are places where you can get good burgers fast guy.
Mans made his own buns and pickled his cucumber
It’s when I watch videos like this one I suddenly become unsure if I have actually ever tasted a really good burger 🙁
If you don't wanna cook, go to a steakhouse and yes, burgers can get amazing
if you don’t have the flame broiled taste you lose
Best parts of all his videos is the one of a kind “Papas B ROLL!”
Oh my I've never been this early to Papa's video
This is definitely better but definitely more expensive and time-consuming :)
No it isn’t
@@the8balls293 it definitely is? not that it's a bad thing, it just is.
@@DustyyBoi no it isn’t it’s better more filling. its probably more healthy too
@@flip9231 okay, but that doesn't have anything to do with the comment i replied to?
Ok?
"they're called the burger king! We'll see about that"
Facts. First step is literally not be fast food 😇
9:50 when he said "worshurshur", i felt that.
Hi, my name is Rich, and I’m ashamed to say, I love the whopper.
Some of it is nostalgia, but I genuinely believe the whopper is a good burger.
Yes, the quality of the burger can vary.
From hot and juicy to basically food poisoning.
To me, the whopper is the measuring stick to all other burgers.
I’m sorry if I’ve disappointed you.
Nothing to be ashamed about dude
When BK came to my country it was FOR REAL a shift in quality and flavor from what we were used to (McDonald's)
It may not be prime quality or the best ingredients, but still good tho... I usually go for a Stacker mysslf, since I'm kind of a hungry dude, but if I'm not that hungry always love to have a Whopper
I do think Burger King is one of the best. It however hugely varies per location. I do have one close to my home that nails the quality all the time. I have had else where that is utter rubbish
This man has spoken and spoke truth.
I’m not mad, I’m upset
I agree!
Joshua's about to be crowned the Burger _Emporer_
When you’re strugglin to making ends meet.. a whopper after pay day hits the spot Ngl. Those were my after high school years when I first moved out of my parents place 😂😂 once in a year I catch myself going back to BK to try it out, it’s my guilty pleasure.
Whenever I’m sick and can’t stomach anything I always eat BK. Idk how different it is in Trinidad and Tobago compared to in the US. but ngl it’s my comfort fast food.
I've heard a lot that BK in the US is soooo much worse than BK elsewhere.
It’s not bad as long as it’s “fresh”
This are just my thoughts, but I think u should do a challenge from the master chef's challenges. After choosing dishes u want to cook, make a poll and let us vote what dish u would be cooking:)
"Tell me what kind of memories come back"
"Mustard"
Josh: *proceeds to not put any mustard on his burger*
I guess mustard is that traumatic, huh?
8:54
To be fair, burger king does not put mustard on their burgers. At least not in NY. But the fact that it smelled like mustard is sus
There is no mustard in any of the BK burgers, at least not in the U.K. Any way
Laughs in nazi
I work in bk and there is mustard but its only in hamburger and cheeseburger, theres none in whopper
My toxic trait is that i think i could do all this without any prior experience 😂
Still give a try. Nothing beats experience. 😁👍
@@MiketheNerdRanger thats actually really wholesome. Not related, but i. Trying this coz u said so(evem tho its not addressed to me)
I went to Burger King in Germany once and they had this king selection menu with Kings mustard & smoked cheese double. Literally the best burger I’ve ever eaten at a fast food chain. If you told me that this burger was made in a burger restaurant, i would believe it
BurgerKing and McDonalds in Europe is better than in USA
A lot of chain restaurants are better in Europe. Went to a Subway in Germany near my hotel and it was just... stellar. On par with the best mom'n'pop subs in my home area in Massachusetts. Not gonna say better, but definitely whoops U.S. Subways and other chains. I suspect the restrictions on many additives and preservatives in Germany/other European countries helps improve the overall taste, also many ingredients often have less distance to travel from the farm to the restaurants.
@@39zack Swiss BK and MickyDs have great quality.
A medium Whopper combo costs like $13.50, but the employees earn like $20.00 an hour.
One of the best burgers I've tasted was a signature mcdonalds mexican burger in mexico, it was basically a better quarter pounder without ketchup and with pico de gallo, guac and pepperjack cheese, it was incredibly good for a fast food restaurant.
I find it Ironic that I just had a Burger King ad play before your video
It's called "Fast Food" for a reason. You can spend 4 hours and $20 making the perfect hamburger 🍔. Try ordering the Whopper heavy everything. Made fresh to order and two for $6.50
I got mine with cheese for $7.20 today. They tasted great!
That's exactly what I think! These type of videos make no sense.
@@federicootte7604 Remember this series is called ''But better''. It's not a ''But cheaper''. He's not trying to make a comparable burger as far as price or speed goes. It's just about taste.
@@sergioolivares3273 i get that, but he compares his burger to the whopper all the time, even knowing that they have to do it really cheap and fast.
@@federicootte7604 If the video wasn't a ''But better'', I would get that point. But in order to make a ''But better'' you need to make a taste comparison with something else.
However even his ''But cheaper'' videos, the food that comes out of it it's better than the more expensive version. I've made some of Joshua's recipes in the past so I can confirm that.
Christ this is unnecessarily extra
*and my adhd brain loves it* 😂
